My husband and I are very happy that we chose Oula for our first pregnancy. The emphasis on midwife-based pregnancy-care was incredibly important to me as a Black woman from the UK, where midwife care is the norm. In each appointment at the Brooklyn office where I was based, I felt super welcomed and supported. The midwives, nurses and support team always spoke to me as an adult with the ability to make my own informed decisions. In other words, both my pregnancy journey and delivery ensued in a spirit of compassionate collaboration that I found especially empowering. Kendall, Jennifer, Shay, Shy, and Saonjie (who delivered my baby girl) are among the many names and faces that I made my experience so positive. My only frustration with my Oula experience was when I had to bounce between locations in Manhattan. Ordinarily, I had to go to the Spring St location for my ultrasound appointments, which I knew in advance. However, on two occasions my baby was not in the best position for a heart reading, so I was ultimately directed to Carnegie Hill in Midtown. This resulted in me paying a copay for three individual appointments for an appointment that could have been completed in one visit. It seems this is a kink that might have been ironed out since, but not at the time that I was an Oula patient. Still, overall, I am very pleased with my experience with Oula and have since recommended a friend who is now a patient. I would definitely return for any future pregnancies! read more

There is good care, and then there's Oula. I just went through my pregnancy journey with the Oula Brooklyn team and cannot even begin to describe the level of attentiveness, compassion, and professionalism that I was shown throughout. Absolutely everyone in the office is wonderful - from the front desk staff to the nurses, the sonographers, and of course the midwives and the doctors (special shoutout to Elisabeth, Dr Olga and Melanie, who were my guardian angels!). They provide truly empowered, comprehensive care, attending to every aspect of a mother's wellbeing - physical and mental health alike. Every visit was so pleasant - quite a different experience than I had with a Weill Cornell OB practice during my first pregnancy. You never wait long to see a provider. No question or concern is made to feel too small or trivial. You're never rushed when in anyone's care. You're empowered to make your own choices and supported in whatever you wish for. And the ability to reach the practice via the portal is so helpful. Oula made my L&D experience an empowered, joyful one, and when I had post-delivery complications that required follow up, they were easy to reach and made arrangements for my continued care with MSW (shout out Kendall!). The hardest part of my Oula journey is saying goodbye to this wonderful team now that my baby is here. front desk staff is very rude. my first time I made a same day appointment and I called prior to my appointment time to notify the staff I was going to be late because I had to get my records from my PCP. I come in and the front desk is telling me all the reasons why they can't see me, obviously not attempting to service me. Had me wait 25 mins to "verify insurance.". did not attempt at all to see if they can't service me even after I explained my situation and that I called earlier. This place almost killed me! Long story short, the main artery in my uterus was cut during my cesarean. I was unaware of what happened and hemorrhaged for 5 weeks postpartum. During those 5 weeks I was rushed to the hospital 3 times and given emergency blood transfusions because I lost so much blood. I called Oula many times and they said they couldn't do anything for me. When I had my postpartum appointment I wasn't even seen by the same doctor that performed the procedure, but she sent me a message saying "everything went fine during my birth" they weren't concerned at all. To this day I haven't had anyone check in to make sure I'm okay. They just keep harassing me to pay the final bill. read more

In moving from MA back to NYC, the 1st thought that came to mind when I learned my partner and I were expecting was would I find midwifery care in NYC similar to the care I had before in MA a whole decade ago? Would my insurance cover quality midwifery care? In my searches I found Oula, and with all boxes checked I knew right away -- We had found the place! Oula brought me not just one amazing midwife, but many to support me throughout my 3rd pregnancy. From the immediate warmth felt from our receptionist at Oula West, to the excitement shared at every ultrasound appointment... the positive energy brought by the many midwives we chose to see that spilled right into the delivery room. I felt supported, heard, seen and valued. Our Oula baby Saie is now 7 weeks and I can't believe how fast time is flying! Oula was so panicked about the dating of my pregnancy that it made me anxious every time I heard from them. Every other health provider I've spoken to is (at best) confused about why Oula didn't believe me or my doctor about my late ovulation. My PCP had to meet with me because they didn't understand a medical reason to draw so much blood. They asked me what my concern was, and I had to admit that I wasn't at all concerned, and that I was just letting people take my blood to appease Oula. My new midwife was appalled that I was told I'm high-risk for gestational diabetes just because of my weight. Everyone I've spoken to has been struck that I was told "I don't see anything" by the doctor who looked at my ultrasound (which had a gestational sac marked by the tech). This doctor wasn't advised that I had told Oula I knew I was about 5 weeks pregnant. After the doctor listed everything that could be wrong, I gritted my teeth through tears to ask the doctor why she wasn't prepared for a 5-week scan, since I had told Oula that that's what they'd get, and learned that the doctor wasn't given any of the information from my portal messages. Also surprising to me was that Oula told me to take a break from their care while I was still listening to my PCP's advice, which conflicted with Oula's advice. They said that they didn't have any insight behind the PCP's advice, which is incredible to me because I told Oula plenty about what was going on in my conversations with my PCP. All of this before I even met or spoke to a midwife. After my Oula experience, my birth goals were just to find someone who would listen to me and to leave with a live baby. Luckily, my new midwife gently told me that this should be the standard of care and that I should be able to dream bigger. My heart breaks for those who stay with Oula and never get told that they deserve trust and care. read more

Absolutely horrible practice. Was misdiagnosed with PCOS WHEN MY PCP and other doctor I'm seeing said absolutely not and that's it's most likely an ovarian reserve problem, from my active eating disorder and over exercising or because of my c section. This obgyn told me to LOOSE WEIGHT and go on weight watchers and wanted to prescribe me metformin mind you im 110 lbs 5'4 lost all my pre pregnancy weight plush more and i am actively dealing with body dysmorphia and anorexia and PPD all while trying to take care of a sick 4 month old. how dare you misdiagnose me and try to destroy me even more mentally and physically when the last visit you saw my ultrasound and told me no cysts were visible and not to worry about my body shape because it takes time after pregnancy. And told me I do not have PCOS. Now you are telling me to loose weight for a disease I don't even have?? Disgusting practice and if I was prescribed the metformin and would've taken it this doctor would've killed me. My A1c is 4.6 and glucose test was a 72 and normal blood sugars around 70-93 both fasting and after eating sometimes reaching 50. PCOS where? I don't even have cramping, hair loss or acne. Your office is full of unknowledgeable and unprofessional doctors. Do your research. I'm reporting you guys to NEDA (national eating disorder association). Women supporting women? How about you destroy women and this is why eating disorders are at an all time high because doctors like the ones working in your facility just throw out PCOS diagnosis and weight loss like it's nothing because they don't know how to research more or don't want to. Just to add was told my excruciating c section lower abdomen pain and swelling is not from my c section. Her exact words were it's not possible after 4 months. Well guess what.. it is because of my c section because this pain was never there until after I got my c section and internal infection. Thanks for nothing oula. And thank you for destroying me even more mentally. If anyone would like to know my results my FSH was 11.4 and LH 5 That's an ovarian reserve issue or issue from my overexercising and underrating. When your LH is high and FSH is lower (ratio wise) that's PCOS. Both PCP and my other doctor confirmed as well as NYU women's health website. Learn your facts and don't tell a woman with a 4 month old who's already on the verge of being underweight to loose weight. How about let's stop pushing weight loss down people's throats unless it's really causing serious health issues? read more

Sadly, I wish I had picked another practice for my first pregnancy. My prenatal care with Oula was okay. I had a fairly uncomplicated pregnancy, but when I started to have pregnancy insomnia throughout my third trimester, I had to reintroduce the issue at each appointment to each new midwife even though it was in my file. Most of the medical advice I got for things was over messenger, which was convenient but impersonal. For my birth, I had a rotation of Oula's midwives, and honestly I think I got lucky to have Meg and Melanie as midwives toward the end of my labor. Meg was warm and supportive, and advocated for my doula to come (my water had already been released before getting to the hospital and they couldn't check my dilation). One of their most experienced midwives, Melanie, helped deliver my son and guided me on how to push, keeping calm (and encouraging!) the whole three hours. I am still very grateful to those two women. This is where things got bad. I had third degree tearing, and my first postpartum visit was a 2 week laceration check. I was anxious to see them because I was still in a lot of pain. Despite being reliable patients, my husband and I got stuck in traffic with our newborn and gave a courtesy call. We were 13 minutes late (most doctors offices have a 15 minute grace period) and were told my appointment had an alternative time (3 hours later) and that they would try to see me. They made us wait in the lobby for THREE HOURS with our newborn because of a policy, one that we observed them flout for others. As a first time mom, who came to the appointment clearly struggling to walk or sit, this was horrible. I cried on-and-off in their lobby and was told they had "emergency appointments" before they could see us. The receptionist gave us a smoothie recipe as a consolation. When I was finally seen, the midwife immediately asked why I was sitting tilted to one side. I told her about the pain I was experiencing, and that I had thrown up the night before and consulted the emergency line. I left the office with advice to add more fiber to my diet. Fast forward to 5 weeks postpartum, I realized that my pain suddenly felt worse than when I was recovering after giving birth at the hospital. I called Oula's emergency line and was told that they couldn't see me the next day, but that they could fit me in the day after at their Manhattan office if I made the trip from Brooklyn. They sent me a prescription for oxycodone in the meantime. When I was finally seen, the midwife did a very invasive check on me that hurt, using multiple fingers to pry open my vagina and press around for potential "problematic areas." It was very painful and I said "ow" and indicated again and again that I was very uncomfortable (and was bleeding a fair amount when I got home). After all of that, she found that an area near my buttock was swollen and warm. It was the same side I had avoided sitting on during my 2 week visit, I realized. There was no OB present in the office, so the midwife called her and consulted over the phone while I cried in the room alone. When she came back, she said they weren't able to get a diagnosis. She gave me a sheet with information on what kind of MRI I would need to make sure I didn't have an abscess. I tried to book any MRI somewhere (anywhere) and was met with dates weeks away. My mom urged me to go to the emergency room. I stressed out for hours about whether or not I should go. I tried reaching Oula and the midwife I had seen, but didn't hear back until that evening, when she finally advised me to go to the ER. At the ER, I was diagnosed with Cellulitis (a bacteria infection that attacks the skin's deeper layers, and can lead to Sepsis). They told me I was lucky that they caught it when they did and gave me antibiotics. Unfortunately, the antibiotics helped but didn't fully clear the infection. I canceled my follow-up appointment at Oula, which I was confident at that point would have been of no help to me, and decided to see my previous OB instead. They advocated for me to go to the ER as soon as they saw me (not to even go home first), and also said I should not have had more than a one-finger check at Oula (I was told my healing looked like 3 weeks postpartum instead of 6 weeks due to my infection). At that ER visit, I was told I had a UTI as well, and that it was likely from being catheterized at the hospital. So, at six weeks postpartum, I finally had the right antibiotics to be on my way to fully getting better. With hindsight, it's very upsetting to know that if Oula had even just done a urine test at my 2-week appointment, they would have probably caught my infection. That is considered standard care at most doctor's offices, but not at Oula apparently. Pregnancy, birth and postpartum are a long journey, with a lot that can go wrong along the way (this is coming from a 33-year-old mom who was healthy and active during pregnancy). Go anywhere else. read more

If you are reading this review to consider Oula for your birth team, I highly urge you to reconsider. I chose Oula in the hopes of having a great support team for a positive birth. Prenatal visits were pleasant because I had a very normal pregnancy with zero complications. I am healthy, fit, and was doing everything to ensure that I stay fit and healthy during pregnancy. I also did ton of prep for my labor and delivery, pelvic floor therapy, hypnotherapy, acupuncture, all the supplements- I was ready and excited for my birth experience. Come labor and delivery time, Oula was not unhelpful but the biggest hindrance. I was in labor for about 24 hrs without epidural, with hypnotherapy I was managing my pain well. The one thing I needed support in was getting instruction on how to push, I had no natural urge to push so I was begging for the midwife to tell me when and how to push. The mid-wife didn't even know how to read my vitals on the screen to determine whether I was having a contraction. After hopelessly pushing for 3+ hrs. There was no instruction, no coaching and no moral support. In fact there were many times when I was literally mid-pushing, the midwife would go in and out or check her phone. Finally, an ob at Mt.Sinai came in and immediately he instructed me on positions and how to push, he was motivated me and brought in so much energy to help me stay strong.. But i had been pushing for so long that baby was getting a bit distressed so we had to do vacuum delivery, luckily baby was out in just 2 pushes with that but I ended up with a fourth degree tear. Had I been coached earlier, I could have prevented the whole ordeal. With the after care, they were very unhelpful again. I had issues postpartum healing and upon prescribing a bunch of expensive tests and putting me through several rounds of antibiotic, I was seeing no result. Finally, I saw a proper gyno who told me these were very common discomfort on the way to healing, prescribed estrogen cream which solved the issue immediately. If your wish is have a more holistic birth, please do yourself a favor and hire a proper midwife and doulas who are skilled and kind, or go the hospital route if that's your chpice. The midwives here are very unskilled and were of no help. Unless everything goes very smoothly which is never a guarantee, they are not helpful. Mind you I had 2 different midwives during my delivery day, both unhelpful. Saw someone else for aftercare, unhelpful again. I got carried away with their advertisement through influencers on the internet, I hope this review helps you make a better decision. read more

I have been going to the Brooklyn Heights location since they opened because I was pregnant at the time, delivered my second baby with them and now see them for gynecological care. Everyone that works at Oula is attentive and kind, and they really take the time to get to know you and answer all of your questions. I highly recommend Oula to all of my friends. read more

RUN!!!! This place is so unprofessional. I had two appointments one was a phone call in which the Oula representative reached out to me an hour past our scheduled appointment and the second one the Oula Nurse Practitioner started our zoom meeting 20 minutes after the scheduled time. The first thing they asked my husband and I were our pronouns. I would never recommend this facility to my worst enemy. It was extremely impersonal and felt like they just wanted my money. They charged me $292 for the 15 minute virtual session, and failed to tell me this ahead of time. Only after I told them i would not proceed with their services did I receive a bill. read more

Oula is a collaborative team of obgyns, midwives, nurses postpartum doulas working together to provide a holistic, supportive evidence-based maternity care. The moment I entered their office I felt seen heard already which is a good feeling; that I'm not just another patient. We met with one of the midwives - Yael. My experience with her was crucial bc it would set the foundation of my maternity journey. Yael was more than personable - she felt like family. She took her time with all of our questions/concerns she was very thorough as well. As someone who had a miscarriage tried for years to have a baby with 0 luck; this pregnancy wasn't easy emotionally mentally. I remember the first time I heard the baby's heartbeat. I broke down bc I couldn't believe it. I was overwhelmed with happiness but mostly fear. My partner midwife just held me as I sobbed. No words were said but at that moment I felt confident. I knew immediately that I found my safe place. Their care extends to dad too. They made sure my partner felt safe, seen, heard understood too. Whatever question or concerned he had they would addressed it; no matter how minor or big. They included him in everything, every step of the way. During our 9 month baby journey we met with all of the midwives, nurses lastly our obgyn Dr Rodas. Everyone genuinely understands care. The anticipation anxiety that we (mostly I) were having leading up to birthing day was exhausting. Dr Rodas was phenomenal, our meeting with her changed how we felt. Her confidence was gentle yet strong. We owe everything to her her team. Our birthing experience from day 1 to our last was more than perfect. Everyone's main goals was that my c-section delivery went seamlessly that we had our little boy in our arms. Success! From beginning to end; everything went smoothly even with little hiccups here there; they reassured us every single step of the way. We love every one at Oula. I truly loved how personal my first appointment felt. It didn't just feel like a normal routine OB appointment. I felt heard and understood. All the midwives are very knowledgeable and I love how they explained the process of how everything would work. It was clear and easy to understand. It did not at all feel like the appointments I had for my first pregnacy. I really liked the feedback and all the information I was given. Everyone at the office is attentive and very nice. I really felt and continue to feel at ease every time I go in for a visit. I had my entire pregnancy -- all prenatal care through to postpartum care -- with Oula. I absolutely loved all of the midwives in the practice. They are incredibly thoughtful, patient, understanding, communicative, and realistic. I deeply appreciated how much respect they showed for me in all of the decision-making, and I especially valued that they tended *away* from additional testing. (At one point I had a scan that indicated my baby might be a bit on the big side, and the ultrasound tech suggested I get another scan to check in. When I asked one of the midwives, Trixie, about it, she said, "and if you find out he's big-- what are you going to do? He has to stay in there!" Hah.) I also really appreciated that Oula had a great online portal where I could find information, make appointments, etc. Now, the downside: Oula is a startup. And it suffers from the same problems that many startups tend to, which is that it's growing incredibly fast. Oula took on tons of new patients and midwives during the course of my pregnancy. It became harder to find appointment slots as I got closer to my due date. And while I actually felt like they did a great job introducing me to all of the new folks and getting me comfortable before labor, when the actual day came, I really felt the challenge of how big they'd gotten. Long story short, there were tons of Oula patients in the delivery wing that night and only one midwife. Another labor was complicated and required the midwife's full attention, which meant that when I was ready to push, there was no one from Oula available to be with me. I ended up needing to 'wait' two hours before I could start pushing (if you've been in labor you may know that waiting isn't actually an option). Now, Meg, the midwife on that night, was so so so sweet and thoughtful and apologetic about it. She made as much time for me as she possibly could. And now five months later I still feel a deep love for her and how she treated me that night. It's just that these are the things that happen when a startup is quickly scaling up. I've been told that Oula has since changed its policies to make sure a situation like mine doesn't happen again. And I believe that they are truly dedicated to making a great experience for everyone. Again, I can't overstate how much I loved the midwives. If I were to have another baby, I would definitely consider using them again. But I would also ask a lot of questions about how they are handling their exponential growth and keeping patients well cared for. read more
