This is about my experience with a twin pregnancy. I think I would have been happy with PSM if I had a singleton--I was especially happy with my care from Roseanne, Danielle, and Genevra. However, I would NOT recommend this practice for a twin pregnancy. They take so much pride in being a midwife practice that delivers twins that they obfuscate the reality of delivering twins with them. There are 14 midwives; I met half of them. I got so much conflicting information about their procedures for twin delivery that I cried from frustration multiple times. It's clear to me now that the midwives have vastly different levels of experience with twin deliveries, and your experience will be different depending on who delivers. Rather than being transparent about that, each midwife just told me their version as if it were definite. I eventually just ignored whatever the midwives told me was going to happen and accepted that I had to go into the hospital with zero expectations. One of the midwives indicated in my chart that I was upset because of the more medicalized process of a twin birth. Subsequent midwives began my next several appointments with a spiel about why twin births have more restrictions, and I had to repeatedly explain that my frustration was actually caused by the conflicting information. It made me feel like no one was actually listening to me and just heard what they expected to hear. I was told that if both babies were head down, I could attempt a vaginal birth; if Baby A was head down and Baby B was not, the midwives would deliver with support from an OB; if neither were head down, I'd get a C-section. However, the midwives actually have very little power when it comes to a twin delivery at the hospital. There were only three "twin-friendly" OBs at Methodist, and to be able to attempt a vaginal delivery when Baby B is breech, you have to schedule an induction for when one of those OBs is working. I was due during a time when two of those OBs were on vacation, so even though my MFM cleared me for induction any time after 37 weeks, I had to wait until I was 38+4. (My twins were 8 lbs each, I was miserable.) NONE of this was clear to me until the last couple weeks of my pregnancy. During my last appointment, I asked the midwife, "If I go into spontaneous labor before my induction date this week, and the twin-friendly OB is not working, will I likely have a C-section?" She paused and said, "I don't want to give you more anxiety," as if the better outcome would be for me to arrive at the hospital spontaneously in labor and THEN learn that I couldn't attempt a vaginal delivery, despite what I'd been told throughout my entire pregnancy. On the day of my induction, it was a very busy day and I didn't start my induction until 1p. At 4p I'd barely progressed, and my midwife told me that the "twin-friendly" OB was only working until 6p, and after the next shift started I couldn't attempt a vaginal delivery. I chose to stop my induction, stay in the hospital overnight, and start again the next day, when the twin-friendly OB was working all day. I NEVER would have agreed to start at 1p knowing I only had until 6p to start delivering, and I'm shocked that my midwife thought it was a good idea. The only reason I can think of why she didn't suggest I come back the next day in the first place is that she didn't want to come in on her day off. I ultimately was able to have a vaginal delivery, with Dr. Leonard (who was amazing) doing a breech extraction for Baby B. However, the only reason I was able to have the birth I wanted was the SHEER LUCK that my pregnancy lasted until my (relatively late) induction date. The midwife who delivered me was dismissive when I expressed my frustration with the poor communication, saying, "If you were anywhere else, you would've had a C-section automatically." That may be true for other midwife practices, but in hindsight, I would've much rather gone with a twin-friendly OB practice (my doula was able to list several)--and I've only seen midwives for my OBGYN care for the last 12 years. read more

Towards the end of my pregnancy I was overdue and the midwives incorrectly estimated the weight of my baby since my stomach looked small. My baby ended up being almost 9 pounds, barely any water left and facing the wrong direction. They should've kept up with better monitoring. I needed an emergency c section since labor wasn't progressing. They gave me cervidil and the contractions were so strong the baby wasn't tolerating it. They then put me on pitocin. Avoid this place please. They may seem nice but during labor there's only 2 midwives on call and a bunch of people delivering. Everytime there was an emergency c section all the staff would leave for an hour. This hospital that they are affiliated with is filled with residents who don't know how to properly give an epidural since my lower body was numb but I still felt strong contractions in my stomach. Nurses took forever and the recovery room was even worse. I would avoid this practice- would rather go to an actual OBGYN Each midwife if different each time and they give you different info each time so it's confusing. No parking either! It's really difficult to find Medical Personnel whom you feel safe with. Luckily, Park Slope Midwives came to my rescue. I was living in Japan when I got pregnant and moved to NYC when I was 20 weeks. The Midwives accepted me into their practice at 24 weeks. I was very happy with them. FYI, I believe they accept women until about 30 or 32 weeks. When you have your appointment, you can be in the office anywhere from 20 - 45 minutes depending on the flow of the day. So I'd say to give yourself at least an hour. The midwives make sure you are aware of all the options you have during that prenatal week, but never pressure you to get them. For example, the flu vaccine. I didn't want to get it and they were completely fine with my decision. No guilt trips here! Each midwife has a different vibe. You will definitely meet most of them, if not all, at the prenatal appointments. One midwife is more stern and sarcastic. Another midwife is gentler and chatty. And another midwife speaks way to fast.. HA! But, If you're ok with having this type of arrangement, then you'll be fine! At the birth, you may get any one of the midwives because they all have their own schedule to be at the hospital - Brooklyn Methodist. In my case, the midwife I ended up with at my son's birth was perfect! I felt that she went with my flow. I didn't opt for an epidural so I was feeling all sorts of feelings. hahaha. The midwives are a great alternative to the regular OBGYN. If you have any doubts, you can call in for a consultation. My vote is with the Midwives. Their receptionist staff can seem to sound "rude" over the phone at times. But, truly, they are one of the nicest staff. The closest train to their office is G and F. There is no perfect experience, especially if you have so many visits and multiple providers, one of those visits might be subpar. But overall I was very happy with my experience here! It's pretty efficient. I just wished some services like ultrasounds, blood test, flu shots were done in the same place so i could avoid being sent different places for different tests. I will still return to this place for a second pregnancy because I had a great labor and delivery experience with them. In the end, this is what mattered to me the most! read more

Amazing experience with them! I switched to the midwives at around 32 weeks in my pregnancy, due to improper care at a nearby OB (who did excessive testing and intervention beyond the standard of care). I couldn't be more happy that I switched! The last few weeks of pregnancy and the delivery of my son in August 2020 was very smooth and stress-free. They respected my wishes of trying for a normal delivery despite being in active labor for a longer period of time and I avoided having to undergo a C-section (which was my greatest wish with this pregnancy). I feel I would have been pressured into a C-section with a standard OB. I recommend them to everyone and definitely will use them in the future!! read more

I hesitate to write all of this because I cherish the memories of my two pregnancies and births , and PSM was definitely a big part of those experiences.  However, I believe in helping and lifting up my fellow women/mothers, and I also believe in a woman's right to own her birth experience as much as possible.  When entering into the care of PSM, PLEASE understand that while they are midwives, they are beholden to the corporate hospital system that they are under - NY Presbyterian. This is also a very busy practice.  If this is your first pregnancy, come to each appointment with a list of questions.  Otherwise your appointment will be brief and somewhat uninformative.  Roseanne and Donna (older midwives with years of experience and a caring bedside manner) are my favorites. Please, IF you are dreaming of a "natural", unmedicated childbirth on your own terms, then take matters into your own hands.  Take very good classes, read very good books.  Hire a doula.  Get your partner or support person to be your coach/advocate in the room.  Know your rights.  Ask lots of questions.  Learn about products that will prepare your body for a natural childbirth. If, like me, you want or need to be in a hospital and you need insurance to cover this, but you want as natural of a childbirth as possible that puts the woman's body and experience first, then YES, go with PSM.  But, OWN the experience. My experience for my first child was wonderful but certainly overshadowed by the fact that it was March 2020 and the Covid restrictions of "no support person in the room" were lifted days before I went into labor, allowing my husband to be present at the last minute.  The days leading up to my birth were some of the most stressful and painful of my life - thinking that my husband could not be present for the birth of his first child or there to support me through labor.  I think most people can agree at this point that that was an unimaginable nightmare for most women.  Going through that process with the midwives made me realize how naive I had been in thinking that they owned their space and made their own rules within NY Presbyterian.  All consideration about what is best for the mother went out the window with the hospital's policies.  Their hands were tied and few apologies were made. Still, with my second child, I felt I should go with a "known quantity" and continue to see the midwives.  The visits were sometimes five or ten minutes and mostly filled with talk about flu, Tdap and covid vaccines.  I met with the same midwife maybe five times (you're supposed to be rotated), and each time she did not remember me.  Throughout my pregnancy, the midwives' office became more and more corporate and impersonal as the new NY Presbyterian computer system took over and the patient would just check in at a kiosk as though at an airport. The biggest factor in writing this review was the labor and delivery of my second child.  I went to the hospital at the last possible moment and they admitted me based on my dilation.  But once I was in, the pressure began.  I was pressured from almost the first few hours of labor to take pitocin to "move things along".  My labor was long.  I was basically forced to leave in the middle of it.  The midwife on duty put so much pressure on me to either take pitocin, take an enema, or leave for awhile - and I became so stressed and tearful that my labor stopped completely for hours.  Every time she entered the room, her arms were crossed combatively and it was a standoff. All words and body language said "make a decision, you're taking too long." My husband and I asked to be discharged.  At this point the midwife seemed fearful I might not even come back and asked me to stay nearby and call frequently. Of course my labor started up again once we got home and relaxed.  We went back to the hospital in the middle of the night and my daughter was born the next morning.  My water eventually broke on its own and I was able to have an unmedicated birth.  Great!  BUT, this was due to the work I did and the support from my husband and the fact that everyone left us alone for hours in the labor room, and it was in spite of the immense pressure I felt from the midwife. This time around, the care I received felt like I was with an obgyn, not a midwife. The midwife on duty was not supportive of a birth without interventions. My feeling is that the midwives' practice has strayed from its original mission under the structure of the hospital system.  Pitocin, epidural, breaking water, and other interventions were pushed from the start, in spite of the charade of reviewing the mother's birth plan and wishes in triage. If you have strong feelings about an unmedicated birth in a hospital setting, then I would just reiterate - do as much of your own research as possible, get a really strong support person in there with you, and own the experience. As a doula I've attended more than a hand full of births with the Park slope midwives and absolutely love them. I've even referred a couple of clients to them. You get the intimacy of a midwife and the support of a hospital. The person I spoke to was very impatient and visibly annoyed by my questions. When I said I had a couple of questions, the woman said they don't offer consultations, but she'll *try* to answer the questions (gee, thanks). Due to COVID, they are not doing consultations, so I would have to transfer care from my OBGYN blindly, without knowing if it's a good fit. Furthermore, they wouldn't be able to fit me in for another five weeks. This is my first interaction with a midwifery group, and it's very different than what I thought it would be. It really could be better as a service. I visit this practice for 2 years now, and had 4 appointments with 3 midwives. Two of them - with Tanya McDermott, who keeps forgetting to send correct prescriptions to the pharmacy, so I either get pills instead of a ring, or get the wrong amount, or don't get anything at all (though I supposed to use this prescription for a week). I had a better experience with Anne Gudi, but met her only once. Also I can't say that my calls to this practice is always a great experience. It always depends on who takes the call, and one receptionist keeps interrupting and hangs off before you realize she is finished with you. read more

They are extremely attentive and care for your needs. Most people brush off moms to be as they express the aches and pains that come along with pregnancy! Not them, when I tell you they LISTEN and care for you it's as if your own sister or mother is caring for you. I would recommend them to everyone. I cannot say enough warm words about this clinic. Each one of the midwives is caring, professional and patient. They were fantastic through the prenatal visits, they were always welcoming and inviting, took their time to answers all my questions. The experience of labor was incredible and empowering. It took a long time, so I had the privilege of going through 3 different shifts, including Jocelyn, Roseanne and Tanya for the grand finale. They were so accommodating, always making sure that I'm informed and really listening to my process and preferences. I just achieved my Vbac with the help of McKenna, Roseann and Jocelyn. They are super attentive, caring and professional. They were answering all my questions every time and explaining me everything they were doing. I never heard the word "c-section" even though the baby's heart wasn't doing well after the epidural. McKenna offered so many options to resolve this(time, position changes, amnio infusion, pushing at 8cm). That was unbelievable. But I had my second baby vaginally after 39hrs of labor. I couldn't believe it. I'm so grateful! It was so important for me to avoid another c section. And I knew that everything was under control every minute of my staying with them at the hospital. McKenna stayed with me for a long time in the labor room watching monitors for the baby behavior. read more

To start off with, I am SOOO thankful I will NOT be delivering my baby or receiving the rest of my prenatal care with PSM. The midwives are nice people, but they are not very thorough, they do not spend much time on appointments (5 minutes tops... makes a first time mama feel nervous), and they are vague in answers to questions and didn't really explain testing that they are recommending or share and explain results. When I first went for my yearly check-up (before I was pregnant), I was impressed by the time that Jessie took to explain things to me and ask me questions. It was the best pap smear experience I'd had. Sadly, I was disappointed when it came to prenatal appointments. That kind of care did NOT follow. I thought, from the reviews I've read about them, that I'd be receiving great care, but I was extremely disappointed. I am thankful to be with a new set of midwives, in another city, who are thorough (and also in disbelief by my experience with PSM). I feel really sorry for anyone who has to use the PSM for their prenatal care and delivery. After my last appointment with them I wanted to THROW A PARTY! I was so happy to be done with them and off to my new midwives. Another thing I didn't like was the rotation of midwives. I'd prefer to have a midwife to work with instead of floating between multiple ones. I guess this isn't a completely uncommon practice for midwives - just not something i would want myself. Also, there have been some comments in the past about the receptionist. She was nice enough to me, but I saw some unpleasant interactions with another mama-to-be. That kind of energy is NOT what you want to be feeling when you are waiting for you appointment. Typical NY I guess... I suggest going somewhere else where the midwives have time to be more thorough on their job. read more

I delivered with these ladies last year. Originally, I was going to go with a practice at Lenox (which has scary high c-section rates), but decided against it because of the distance. When I was three months pregnant, I took a good long look at how big a nine month pregnant woman is. No way did I want to haul myself, on the subway! So I look for an alternative and found these guys. The receptionist is a sweetie, but can be abrasive. I just took it with a grain of salt and was nice to her, even if she was grouchy with me, which did happen a few times. I've worked as a receptionist, it's thankless work all around. I appreciated the mid-wife rotation, but do agree that it would have been great to choose who I delivered with. In the end, I think I had the best for my case, and delivered with Betsy. She used to be the lead mid-wife at St. Vincent's. Without her, I would have had a c-section. All the doc's at Methodist were prepared to do a c-section, but she avoided it. Overall, I recommend them. They are highly trained to avoid most of the common interventions. I did have to have an epidural, but that beats a c-section in my book. read more

Starting at 20 weeks pregnant, I switched to Park Slope Midwives from a more standard OB-GYN practice on the Upper East Side. Immediately I saw a real difference: at the other office, harried and often only half-competent nurses pulled women out of the waiting room after an average of an hour's wait to ask redundant questions, weigh them and take their blood pressure, and then leave them in an exam room to wait for another good length of time to finally see the doctor. At PSM, as soon as they enter, women test their own urine and weigh themselves, both of which they do in the privacy of a bathroom. The longest wait I've ever had after that and before seeing a midwife was maybe half an hour, once, and that wait came accompanied by numerous apologies. The midwives -- at this point, I've seen four out of five -- are competent, friendly, warm, hands-on, and intelligent, with great bedside manner. From the moment they come to take my blood pressure, they seem to actually care about how I'm doing. They leave me feeling affirmed, too, which is a bonus I'd happily pay extra for if I had to. Luckily, it comes free of charge. I'm holding onto the fifth star only because I haven't gone through labor and delivery yet. But I do feel much more relaxed about the prospect than I did when I was in the hands of my previous doctors. read more

I have been coming to this practice for 18 weeks while pregnant and was extremely disappointed and dissatisfied with the service and therefore I'm transferring to another practice at 29 weeks. I had total of 4 visits at Park Slope Midwives. 1. During every visit no midwife asked me how I feel, or any personal question. The routine appointments were very short and just narrowed down to checking heartbeat and talking about which tests need to be taken. When I asked about the list of doulas, they said to me to find it online by googling. When I asked about pregnancy classes, they told me to start thinking about it after 30 weeks. There was no lifestyle guidance, no pregnancy guidance, no nutrition suggestion, not pregnancy education advices. When I said that jog, the comment was made 'you will not be able to jog after 6 months' which is not true by the way. 2. Me and my husband wanted to take an extra genetic test performed by a different brand then I already took. The new brand had a more comprehensive result format and for our peace of mind we wanted to do this. The midwife started arguing with us that we don't need it. We said 'yes we know we may not need it, but we will feel better if we take it'. She kept arguing for a while, until she finally wrote us the recommendation to take it. 3. I had to do GD test and I asked a midwife to offer alternative to glucola drink that contains ingredients banned in Europe that are used as fire retardant and bunch of other terrible ingredients, etc... there was another argument where she said the only drink I can do is glucola and there is no alternatives (this is not true, there is a scientific research done and there are alternatives). In fact I can drink organic Apple juice. Again there was an argument where the second midwife came and told me I either take glucola or I can't be in their practice. I called other midwife practices and all of them offer alternatives for glucola and they told me they accept organic Apple juice. 4. When asked to transfer my documents - they lied in my chart, saying that I refused the GD test and also lied that I refused the Doppler even though they measured heartbeat of the baby with a Doppler at every visit. 5. Rude person on the phone and long waits is the cherry on the top, which would not be a 'deal breaker' for me. 6. The practice is only open 4 times a week and it took me 5 days to get an answer to one of my questions. I guess the most important point why I'm leaving the practice is because of very unpleasant midwives that are on power trip and also lack of any personal care. I don't feel comfortable giving birth we 2 Midwives our of 3 I met during my visits. There is no 'individualized' approach as they claim on their website. It is a very main stream practice that you can probably get with any doctor anywhere else. read more

Park Slope Midwives delivered my second son three weeks ago at Methodist hospital and I had a very positive experience. I choose the midwife group after reading so many positive reviews here and on local parenting websites. They were awesome! I had my first son with a local OB and had a bad experience being induced and then suffering a 4th degree tear after the birth. I was very fearful that that woudl happen again but the midwives advised me of natrual ways to go into labor on time and how to labor without pain medication. The midwives helped me to have my second son completely natural and the difference between the two births was tremendous. As far the office goes I never had any problems with anyone nor did I ever have to wait long to see a midwife. Everyone was friendly and remembered my name when I came in. I also really liked that they had evening hours. When it came time to give birth I had two midwives with me helping me out and reassuring me that I could get through it without pain medication and I did! I cannot praise them enough. read more

I don't usually write negative reviews but I feel compelled to share my experiences at this clinic. For my first few visits, I didn't feel like I received much in the way of guidance or help, but rather just a lot of extremely negative and judgmental blather about weight gain. There was no discussion per se, or even questions about my actual diet and the different requirements for pregnancy, but rather blanket aphorisms about the need to "eat healthily." At one point, the midwife in question told me that one of her patients had gained 100 pounds during pregnancy. Since changing practices, I want to make a few points about this. Let's take the example of that 100 pound weight gain story. Here's my question: so WHAT? There was no discussion about whether that weight gain actually caused any problems, such as diabetes, difficult birth or any other issues. Second, I had at that point gained about ten pounds. So why the hell was I getting that kind of anecdote? And here's the other thing. It has taken me until now, 30 weeks pregnant, to realize that I needed to basically triple the amount of protein in my diet. That was the whole problem. Until I realized that, on my own, I had ZERO energy and was experiencing constant nausea and insomnia. It was impossible, in that state, to plan or prepare meals. I was in pure survival mode. I don't know how much more clearly I could have said, "I hear you when you tell me I need to do X. I am telling you I don't know HOW to do X. Tell me how." The message never got through. Instead, I felt belittled and ashamed. Sadly, this did effect my experience of pregnancy. The truth is that I normally eat abnormally healthily--almost no junkfood, certainly no soda, very little fried food--but what is "healthy" during normal times is totally different to what is "healthy" during pregnancy. That seems like a very obvious and basic conversation for the midwife to engage; she did not. I would go home in tears. I have a secret suspicion that the midwife in question might have her own eating disorder issues, but I don't know, which is why I'm not naming her. Anyway, I am very glad I changed practices and my new midwife/OBGYN told me that they think weight is just a number: they actually tested me to see whether I'm at risk for diabetes (not even close) and whether my baby is overweight (she's actually on the small side.) They said they don't want to see me wind up with post partum depression but they understand that what I am feeling now, guilt and shame, is equally important. So they told me to just give myself a break. And now that I've figured out the protein thing, I am finally feeling better and I'm able to exercise more than at any point earlier in my pregnancy. This is probably long overdue, but I had my daughter with them back at the end of 2014. Everything was perfect, my prenatal care, my delivery, my follow up. It was truly everything I imagined and more. I was recently reminded of how great they are when I became pregnant again, but resulted in a miscarriage. They were exceptional, from helping me find the best next step, to checking in, to making sure the experience was both personal and professional. But beyond my personal experience I am also a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner who recently changed jobs and am now at New York Methodist in the NICU. I attend all the high risk deliveries and I can honestly say that PSM deliveries are always calm, respectful of the mother, and well controlled without undue risk. This is important to me because while I greatly value the midwife experience and birth, I have seen the worst case scenarios and outcomes happen (over the years, at multiple hospitals) , and would never advocate anyone who I felt took excessive or undue risk for the mom or baby just for a specific type of birth "experience." PSM knows when to be patient, and when to be cautious. This is huge. I wish I saw this more often, but many times I see providers that lean too far to one side or the other. Straddling the middle is very difficult and they do it perfectly. Their years of experience and well honed practice in teaching their new midwives is evident across all their births. I am a bit partial to Roseanne and Jess since they delivered my daughter and I have seen them the most, but all of the midwives I have encountered both personally and professionally have been exceptional. It is a wonderful practice, and I hope I get to experience another delivery with them. read more

I have called Park Slope Midwives three times and I was put off by the receptionists each time. I found them to be short and unprofessional. Being newly pregnant I am already experiencing some level of anxiety and I found myself more anxious after each phone call. I made the decision to use a midwife in order to experience a more holistic and efficient approach to pregancy and health care. I have since consulted another Midwife and am very happy with their services. I would highly recommend Clementine to anyone who is willing to have a home birth. read more

I'm genuinely surprised by the negative reviews here. PSM delivered my son and now provide my ongoing well woman visits. My experiences with them have been generally positive. A few of the midwives have been in the business a very long time and can come across as a bit jaded, but no one ever hesitated to answer my questions when I was pregnant and I found them to all be friendly and professional. They are not the crunchiest of midwives, so if someone is looking for a birth-center style experience, this may not be the place for you. But, if you want smart, professional midwives, with a fairly low c-section rate, who do not push interventions but do not reject them either, PSM might be a good fit. read more

I really wanted to have a natural birth and chose Park Slope Midwives because they were affiliated with Brooklyn Methodist Hospital which was where I wanted to deliver. I have to say that from the beginning, I just never felt like this practice was a great fit for me. It was never so bad that I felt I needed to find someone else but it was also never such a great experience that I felt that I bonded with any one midwife (besides at the birth, which I'll get to). I felt like they were so overwhelmed with patients that the quicker they could usher me in and out of the appointment, the better. That would have been okay except I always had about a half hour to 45 minute wait for my 10 minute appointment. Mostly, the appointments were uneventful and quick except for the time that Jessie (one of the lead midwives) felt the need to question my choice of not following up on my high risk (1/260) Downs Syndrome assessment. She felt that I needed to know whether or not the baby had Downs to avoid being disappointed in the delivery room and she felt there would be the chance of "shunning" my baby at birth. I had already made my decision and was clear with her about it and I was extremely upset that she rehashed such a sensitive subject when I had already moved forward. Since there is a rotation of midwives there, I worried that she would be the one to deliver my baby and more than anything, I didn't want that. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure plenty of people love her I just didn't. Most importantly though, Donna was the midwife who delivered my baby and I was beyond thrilled with her expertise. It really did make up for the unsavory experience I had throughout the pregnancy because she supported my natural birth plans and when I felt like giving in and getting an epidural, she told me that she believed that I could go without. There aren't enough positive things I could say about Donna. She really was fantastic!!! But of course, after the birth, come the bills!! Trying to get in touch with someone at Park Slope Midwives about billing is a difficult task considering the fact that they are closed weekends and the person in charge of billing is only in on Thursdays. I had to call to have my bill sent, which was strange, and when the bill was higher than we had anticipated PSM begrudgingly let us set up a payment plan. We sent in the first payment and a month later, when the bill never came, I called to see where it was and Maureen seemed shocked that I would want a bill. She assumed that we would just send a check in every month and sarcastically chuckled when I said that had expected a bill. I would have been fine sending the check in without the bill had I known that that was what she wanted but she never communicated that. Overall, my experience wasn't awful and the birth was fantastic but the next time I'm pregnant I will not go back to PSM and I can't say that I would ever recommend them either. read more

I haven't made an appointment yet but I was very rudely interrupted on the phone by the receptionist while inquiring if my health insurance plan was accepted and other payment options. The receptionist did not let me finish my follow up question upon learning they did not accept my insurance. She was very keen on getting me off the phone and referring me to speak to another person after hours. I'm sorry but her attitude turned me off from ever going to this practice. read more

A friend of mine had recommended Park Slope Midwives even though I am not pregnant or really considering being so. I just needed a routine checkup and pap smear as my last gynecologist was pretty awful. No bedside manner, a rather painful touch, and a wam-bam-thank-you-ma'am, i-could-care-less-about-your-vagina approach. I didn't know that midwives dealt with more than just obstetrics, but I was happy to learn that my friend was still a patient for her general GYN care a couple of years after she'd delivered. Well, I am sold. Jessica Goldman, my midwife, was so conscientious, smart, thorough, and gentle. She interviewed me for a good twenty minutes regarding my medical history as well as my socio-sexual history. She chimed in with very helpful advise regarding lubrication and how to mitigate against uti's and answered my questions comprehensively. She also had a great sense of humor, which goes a long way with me. The physical examination was as comprehensive but also extremely respectful and gentle. She gave me some tips as to how to relax and really it was the least uncomfortable one I've ever had. In the waiting room (which is very well appointed and clean, as are the examination rooms), I had done a number on myself for not having remembered to take a klonopin before leaving the house, but it turned out one wasn't necessary (Thank you Ms. Goldman!). I will also say that I really liked the secretary. She was very friendly and precise. Just a great experience. I walked out of there and was kind of in awe of how humanely I was treated. Can't speak for how they practice obstetrics but my friend and the women in the waiting room gave glowing reviews. I better find some crappy places to review so that my review histogram isn't so 5-star weighted but I guess I'm just more compelled to turn people on to amazing services than to revisit crappy experiences. read more

I transferred to the midwives at 32-33 weeks pregnant after a lackluster experience with a different practice in the neighborhood. They were recommended by a friend early in my pregnancy and I was too tired to run around so I just went to a different practice my friend recommended and didn't bother to come to the midwives. I wish I had because I think if I met them at the top of the process I would have chosen them. I have felt like I am getting the best care - and that all the midwives I have met at supportive knowledgable and awesome. They are all awesome knowledgable and working to give me the best experience delivering my daughter - any day now.... will update after that experience. read more

Astonished at how many glowing reviews out there for PSM! Perhaps the women who like it have already had children so are more experienced and relaxed about their care, perhaps we saw the only awful midwife...who knows) My husband and I walked out of there the first visit and looked at each other and said NO WAY. Its tiny and honestly, really dirty. The receptionist is this ancient cranky old-school NYorker who was really mean to a couple of other mamas in the waiting room-but I can deal with bad admin for good care. No-tech midwifery did not inspire confidence. They have one ancient sonogram machine from 1980 that they admit they wont even use bc its so bad and the midwives have to work off laptops which seem to be the only electronics in the building. We saw a girl named Chris who seemed very young, blase and inexperienced. did not anwer questions very well, or offer any basic info (the only reason i knew basic stuff about pregnancy such as food rules etc was from a previous OB who confirmed my pregnancy). she made some religious comments which led us to think that most of the patients there are practicing jews and let us know that we were one of the only "park slope yuppies". SHE ACTUALLY CALLED US YUPPIES TO OUR FACE! She also seemed very flustered by my husbands strange name and the fact that we were an interracial couple. Then followed the most awkward exam ever, where she seemed really prudish about my body and told me quickly afterward "you can cover it up". WTF--you are going to be delivering a baby from those body parts girl! She did ask what we wanted/were expecting out of midwifery and we clearly explained that we want natural birth, low interventions etc but we still want all the benefits of modern medicine. whatever our insurance will cover, we want. We KEPT having to tell her that throughout the visit and she didnt listen at all because she kept suggesting things such as not needing to get any ultrasound at all throughout my pregnancy and how most of the tests arent really needed (without even explaining the tests to us at all). NOT FOR MODERN BUT NATURAL FIRST TIME MOMS! They deliver at Methodist which is just ok. PS it took two weeks for Chris to call me and tell me i had a UTI and give a prescription! read more

I had my son in January 2011 yes I realize that it's a very long time ago , however I have not been able to mentally even handle the idea of having another child in almost 8 years . It's so upsetting to me and the older I get the more I realize how nieve I was back then! I feel like I have a duty to let people know my experience! So I had no issues with most of the midwives and only met Betsy (the midwife after shift changes was the one there who caused all complications ) my labor was long and slow to progress ! I did go through 3 shift changes ! During my labor Betsy came in she just wanted to pump me with petosum , she told me (just as another reviewer stated during an examination which I was 4-5 centimeters she hurt me so badly I have experienced these examinations plenty and THEY NEVER HURT she hurt me and I made a noise in which she responded "oh if you think that hurt YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW BAD LABOR IS " another woman down the hall yelled so loud and Betsy said " oh yes you hear her yelling , that's the pain of labor " who even says this to a person going through pain oh it's going to get worse like flipping lie to me and tell me your okay your strong you can do this! sorry I chose midwives to encourage me and promote natural birth! She told me I need an epidural , I refused , she pulled my husband aside and told him " prepare her for an epidural SHE CANT HANDLE THIS" being a concerned husband and putting his faith in her he talked me into it! I was so tired and I trust my husbands opionion so with all this I accepted ! before epidural (I remember because I was standing) she came to me with papers to sign for a c section ! I responded "NO I DONT ACCEPT A C SECTION" she lied and told me something like. "Oh no it's just hospital policy " WE REALIZE then and there she knew I was going in for a c ! She rushed to get me an epidural , gave me patosin (unbenonced to me) , then insisted on breaking my water ! I was like " is this really necessary " she responded " yes" and started doing it before I could even talk! I was so young at the time and just put my faith in her even though I didn't like her I felt like I was just a stupid child! No I was not she was not listening to me she didn't care she just wanted a reason to do a c ! The minute she broke my water my baby went into distress ! Listen I am sure this can all happen anyway but I believe it was her actions that caused it ! Less than half an hour later I was rushed off to a c section ! I hate her for how she treated me I hate that my experience scared me into having no more children! !!! Then there was a shift change I don't remember the midwifes name that came in to tell me the c section news but she was warm and nurturing but at that point there was NOTHING THAT COULD HAVE BEEN DONE! She held my hand and she told me it would be okay ! I was scared and happy she came into the Operating room with me! However there was NOTHING SHE COULD DO SHES NOT A DR . !!YA WELL I GET HOME TO A BILL OF 2-400 bucks (cant remember exact amount) FOR HOLDING MY HAND IN SURGERY omg read more

I started seeing PSM in Park Slope (9th Street) when I became pregnant (my GYN no longer delivers babies). I'll start with the positive: I have been fortunate enough to see the same midwife when I've been, and she is to-the-point, which I like. This is my first baby, and I feel comfortable asking them questions. Their hours are incredibly convenient (they have late appointments, making it possible for my husband to accompany me), which is great. And, they are close to NYM hospital, making testing convenient as well. Although I have only been for a few appointments, I have been a bit dissatisfied with the receptionist services (scheduling my first appointment via phone, being checked in, etc.). I know it is not the easiest of jobs, but there is a level of professionalism, organization, and general courtesy that one should expect from a visit to a doctor's office. But, from my perspective, the benefits (good midwives, convenient hours, lots of positive delivery reviews) outweigh the negative reception experience, so I'm hoping to stick with them through my delivery. read more

I just had my baby with them and even though we had to schedule a csection due to breech presentation, a midwife was with me the entire time. They are so supportive, nurturing and knowledgeable. To top things off, a midwife returned my call within minutes on a holiday after I left a message about a possible infection I was worried about. These ladies know what they are doing and the have great bedside manner. My favorite midwives are Anne, Donna and Roseanne. read more

The Park Slope Midwives should not accept anyone who is not pregnant as a patient. On two occasions it took much too long to receive the results of two different tests, despite repeated telephone calls to the office. To add insult to injury, both tests were a bit suspicious, necessitating further tests. Needless to say, I will never go back to that office, and should have learned my lesson after the first incident. read more

I delivered my baby boy with Park Slope Midwives in November 2015 and was extremely happy with the service they provided. I transferred to the group during my second trimester and couldn't be happier. Each office visit was smooth and they took their time with me, answering any questions and keeping me informed. A few times I arrived a little early for my appointment as they were often schedule before I had to be at work and they were able to see me a little early which made a huge difference to me schedule. For my actual delivery my waters broke 5 weeks early so all was a little sudden and rushed. Roseanne met me at the hospital and put me at ease. Her shift ended soon after and Betsy took over from there. I was so happy with the service she provided. She was direct and to the point which was exactly what you need when you are in labor! She listened to all my concerns and talked with me when I was able to talk. She guided me through the labor and never pushed anything on me. When it got to the pushing stage she was a great coach - I had no idea what I was doing..!! All in all I was extremely happy with the service PSM provided and would defiantly recommend them, especially in you want to have a natural, non invasive birth. I started going to Park Slope midwives for my annual checkups a few years ago on the recommendation of a friend. The first visit was great - I met with Jess, and she was extremely warm, friendly, great beside manner, and informative. She spent about 20 minutes reviewing my questions and concerns and advising next steps. She called me personally to review lab results and so forth, not long after my appointment. However, almost every subsequent visit has been difficult. When referred to a specialist for something, the information he read from my file was different from the information I received from the midwives' office. Additionally, the receptionist is completely rude and off-putting. I've ended up in arguments with her over something as simple as needing an emergency refill on birth control - obviously, I'm already stressed about requiring a refill, why make it more difficult to get my prescription? I did not call the office to be reprimanded. Another issue has been scheduling appointments. Because the doctors move around, it can be difficult to get an appointment in a timely way, and I had to switch to a different doc in order to get an appointment - she was awkward and disinterested, and seemed more concerned about ending our appointment than meeting my needs as a patient. Also I've had to call back multiple times due to their computer systems being down, making scheduling impossible. If every appointment had been like that first one, I would absolutely return to this practice over and over. However, the inconsistent and inconvenient service they provide is not worth the hassle. Maybe pregnant women have a better experience, but for annual checkups and related matters, there are better and easier ways to get an appointment elsewhere (I have since moved on to Garden OB-GYN on the UES - found through ZocDoc and everything about that experience has been excellent). read more

If you don't get Donna at your birth, the midwives are great! If your birth ends up happening in Donna's shift-- beware. She has a loose hand when it comes to cutting. I did A LOT of research about the Park Slope Midwives before joining their clinic. What I read was overall positive feedback, so I went with them. Here's their deal: They are natural. They are sweet, much more supportive than a typical doctor, and give a simple, earthy impression. I met most, if not all of the midwives. During my pregnancy I was thrilled with everything: they were so supportive, very understanding, so with me in the process. Didn't have to wait too long most appointments, and they gave me time to ask questions. However, it happened that the time of my birth was in Donna's shift. Now I think most of the midwives and great and will help you give birth as naturally as possible. But Donna is a different story. She had no patience, and so she gave me an episiotomy - cutting my midline, mind you, which is the worst thing ever-- doctors haven't cut midline in the last 20 years. I tore after that too. I had issues for months after my birth. My good friend had the same story: loved the midwives, had Donna, who cut her and was extremely callous. If the midwives don't get their act together and fire her, I would suggest you stay far away from the group. There's a good chance you'll get Donna (she does many night shifts) and she is the worst you could ask for. read more

Very unprofessional and not caring. First they told us which Obama insurance they take (Fidelis). We signed up for that insurance, and they then told us that it was a mistake and they don't take it. We were stuck because you can't change insurance until end of year. We then called NY State of health and they said that due to pregnancy we could now go on medicaid with new plan (We confirmed that the midwives accept United Healthcare). However this took a few months (all the paperwork income verification etc.). Finally we called back parkslope midwives and they refused to see us because we by now we are already 51/2 months into pregnancy without seeing a doctor. Now with less than 4 months left to the due date, we need to "find" a doctor that will accept this insurance! read more

I delivered in the summer of 2014 and was delighted with my care. Yes as other people stated there were long wait times however the midwives always apologized and I never felt rushed! Perhaps them not rushing through patients is why they get backed up becauset they always let me go through all my questions and gave me thorough responses. My delivery was just as amazing as my care. I felt taken care the whole time I was in the hospital. Some people pointed out the attitude of the receptionist and while sometimes she did seem crass other times she seemed very caring. Her attitude never bothered me because she is not my midwife so I never gave it to much attention. All the midwives clearly care about their patients and I always felt very comfortable. I hope to deliver with them again soon!!! read more
