After my last review, Jada, the founder of Birth Day Presence, reached out to me for an honest and open conversation about what she could do to improve not only my experience but classes there in general. Being a yoga teacher with pre/post natal experience I went into their classes already very knowledgeable so they weren't as informative as I would have liked but I think they are probably life saving for people who don't care to/don't have the time to do their own learning and research. Birth day presence and boober provide not only child birth and newborn care classes, but match clients with (and train) doulas, lactation consultants etc Most importantly though, and I got this sense from the beginning but really felt it after talking to Jada, they genuinely care about providing quality information and services to new families. They also understand that the birthing industry (because it is an industry) is far from perfect and they want to empower families and help them navigate it. I feel very grateful to Jada and Birth Day Presence and although I originally walked away feeling there was more to be desired I now feel like I couldn't recommend them more to anyone seeking childbirth/childcare education or training. My husband and I purchased weekend intensive childbirth education classes and we attended when I was 27 weeks pregnant with our first child at Birth Day Presence. We came here with an open mind and hoping to learn the important basics of childbirth. Needless to say, we had no idea what we were getting ourselves into. We didn't feel prepared and we were hoping this class would make us feel more comfortable of what's to come. The classes we chose were on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am until 3:30 pm. Jen Buice was our instructor and she was very informative and knew her stuff. We also got to mingle with other couples who were due at around the same time as us. We got to share our experiences with each other, which I think my husband and I wouldn't have gotten a chance to do otherwise if it wasn't for this class. We watched some childbirth videos, learned about different stages of labor, pain management, labor exercises with and without the ball, a little about lactation, etc. We also went around the room and did some activities so it could be more interactive and social. Bring some snacks because the classes might seem a little long at times! We did get a short lunch break. One slight complaint I have is that I got a little antsy and didn't feel that comfortable with their seating arrangements. I felt a little claustrophobic. Overall, I think we feel better and a little bit more prepared about being parents. I would recommend this class if you have a chance to take it. It's located in a beautiful part of Park Slope in a beautiful brownstone. Price is a little steep at $395 but I think it's worth it. You can't put a price on your future bundle of joy. read more

My husband and I trekked from Jersey City to Park Slope for the weekend intensive class and we weren't disappointed. Before attending, we both felt somewhat prepared by reading material and friends' anecdotes. But, I was really pleased with the amount of practical information and different points of view we were presented with. Jen was a great instructor - incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. The class had a good mix of activities and moving around, getting to know the other parents and general education. I liked that information was presented in an objective way - allowing us to make our own conclusions based on studies and research. Jen also shared a lot of great resources to look into topics further. Overall, we came away feeling more prepared and equipped with the knowledge to know what questions to ask and how to handle all the different situations that might get thrown at us during the birth process. My husband and I recently took the Weekend Intensive Childbirth Education Class in Greenpoint, and it was so incredibly thorough and informative. I'll admit, I went into thinking that we were going to find maybe 50% of it useful since it seemed like such a long class, but I was on the edge of my seat the whole time - I learned SO much, and feel completely prepared to go into labor and informed about my options at the hospital as well as what my body is going through. Additionally, my husband found it extremely helpful, and I would say a huge portion of the class is about how your partners can help you through the process. The teacher Ashley was fantastic. She is so knowledgeable, patient with all questions, and we really appreciated the fact that she was teaching an "evidence-based class" and not pushing any home birth hippie dippie methods on us. In fact, the whole class was very much geared towards the typical NYC woman who is giving birth in a hospital without a doula. I highly recommend taking the weekend intensive as opposed to the express class. It was so worth every penny. read more

I took both the child birth doula and postpartum doula training workshops at BDP with Debra. Debra is such an OG -- her knowledge, experiences, and wisdom that she shared with us was amazing, even through the awkward world of zoom. I also took the contract writing for doulas workshop with Em Flynn and the business doula workshop with Jada. Both of these workshops were really helpful in guiding me towards my next steps as I enter the world of running my own business and doulaship. Both Em and Jada were so informative and easy to talk to. I recently completed their Lactation for Doulas class. It was held virtually, and I was impressed with the overall organization. The teacher and host were professional. The content was interesting and relevant but I felt it could have been better sequenced. My husband and I took the new born care and breastfeeding class with Meghan in Manhattan. Of all classes we too during my pregnancy, this was the most useful! I HIGHLY recommend it to any expecting parents! Especially now that our baby has arrived, I can confirm that ALL the knowledge we've taken away in has been very useful every single day! Breast feeding - what a novel idea. No clue how to do it, though. I didn't want to find out the hard way, so I took a class on it at Birth Day Presence to give me a heads up. Jada was down to earth and mellow, but she also managed to be very informative and authoritative. And she had no qualms repetitively grabbing her own boob to show us what the deal was. I like a chick who grabs her own boob with impunity. In short, Birth Day Presence does a good job teaching you how to teach your baby to suck. Right on. read more

My boyfriend and I took the childbirth weekend intensive class with Caitlin a couple of weeks ago. We seemingly the most organised couple in terms of due dates, we were only 26 weeks pregnant while most were in their early to late 30's. (I had booked their last available class on their schedule months ago so I would not forget later on) We are pleased we went early, as it gives us time to get organised on what we learned. We started the class really green and left empowered with knowledge, if not a little dazed. Caitlin was informative and able to give advice on anything asked of her. There was no pushing parents to one preference of childbirth or another (the pressure we put on ourselves is enough). Really, she just laid out all the options and talked through the experiences of them all, giving us the knowledge so we can make up our own minds or ask the right questions when the big event happens. I think everyone attending the class had a good laugh, shed a tear or two and left feeling a whole lot better and less afraid about what their next step was. We did two classes through Birth Day Presence: (1) Newborn Care & Breastfeeding and (2) Childbirth Weekend Intensive. Both were extremely informative and instructors were very knowledgable, friendly and good at answering questions! Special shout out to Sasha who taught the childbirth weekend intensive class. She was extremely informative, gave all perspectives, was very neutral in her opinions on things and had a great sense of humor. My husband and I came away with a lot of wonderful information ranging from what to include in our hospital bag, to a much better understanding of the actual birth process itself, to really great coping mechanisms and important things to discuss with each other ahead of time. We're now ready to discuss additional things w/our doctor and feel much more empowered on advocating for ourselves! read more

My husband and I took three classes at Birth Day Presence: breastfeeding/newborn care, infant CPR and the childbirth weekend intensive class. The breastfeeding class was especially helpful. The instructor, Meema, was awesome. I learned so much- from how to encourage a proper latch to how to bottle feed correctly. I think for women there is this expectation that these things should be intuitive but they are not. I found the class to be extremely informative and supportive. The infant CPR class was equally great. The instructor, Geoff, was light hearted and easy going but also very determined that we left the class with the knowledge to handle an emergency situation. I feel that class could have easily been longer as there is so much material to cover. Finally, the intensive childbirth class with Catelin was also amazing. She went over the steps of labor, pain coping/relaxation techniques, and the various interventions that may occur. I definitely have a better idea of what to expect and I know my husband feels more prepared as well. The best part about the class was how the information was presented- Catelin created a very supportive space free of any judgement. I cannot say enough good things about the classes. I highly recommend all three. read more

Had a private session for c-section prep with the wonderful Meghan recently. She was very knowledgeable about the whole process and in touch with what was happening in local hospitals. She answered all of our questions about hospital stay, tips on breast feeding, swaddling and diaper changing and more. Great class. My husband and I are somewhere in the middle on the spectrum of natural birth to wanting all medical interventions, and my main concern was ending up in a class that felt judgmental of our choices, or pushy about a certain crunchy agenda. But our extremely well-informed instructor, Megan, was clear and consistent in her validation of whatever birth path you choose or find yourself on, from natural to epidural, vaginal to c-section, etc. We left feeling energized, excited, and educated, with some great insights and a few new tools in our arsenal. I would ESPECIALLY recommend this for pregnant women and couples who aren't hiring a doula--it will fill in some of those crucial knowledge gaps that our doula has helped us with. read more

We are first-time parents - just got home from the hospital yesterday and were having trouble breast-feeding after a sleepless first night. Jada came over within hours of calling Birth Day Presence and taught my wife some tips for breastfeeding and baby care that made an immediate positive difference! My husband and I HIGHLY recommend Birth Day Presence. We are getting ready to have our baby any day now, and have had an amazing experience taking the Childbirth, Newborn Care, and Breastfeeding classes here. For our Childbirth class, we did the weekend intensive with Caitlin. The format of the class was great - lots of hands-on activities and so forth. Most of all, Caitlin herself was what made the class so helpful. What a wonderful teacher! She was able to quickly put the group at ease so that no one felt silly asking questions and discussing (what could have been embarassing) concerns. Also, the class was a whole lot less cheezy than we had anticipated. My husband and I learned so much, gained a lot of confidence, and had a great bonding experience. Thank you, Caitlin! We also took Newborn Care with Rosie. Again, Rosie was able to put the group at ease right away so that we all felt free to ask questions about diapers and EVERYTHING else. The class was informative and the supporting materials were especially helpful. For folks who have never changed a diaper or even held a newborn, this class was great for establishing our confidence. Most recently, we took the breastfeeding class with Jada. You immediately feel like she is there to support you and tell the unbiased truth about breastfeeding and the potential challenges (and joys!). We don't have our baby yet, but I am sure that this class will prove absolutely essential to our success. I've taken several classes with Birth Day Presence and highly recommend them! We've taken all the classes during the COVID-19 pandemic so all were virtual, and we still found them engaging and informative despite not all being in the same room. In every interaction with the Birth Day Presence team I was impressed with how intentional they were in making sure all preferences and experiences were given equal validation; there was no judgement if you wanted to have a medicated vs. unmedicated birth, language always accounted for a variety of different kinds of families and support people who might join during a birth, and no preference given to a hospital setting vs. birth center. Birth Day Presence + Jada are A M A Z I N G ! ! We attended two classes (breastfeeding and childbirth) before giving birth to our first born this past fall. Both classes were exceptionally informative, and more so really just prepared us much as anyone could for giving birth and having a baby. I could not recommend them more. Questions were welcomed and answered with thoughtfulness, and offered both traditional western medicine approaches, and those typically used by the rest of the world. While you can tell the class takes a more natural approach to child birth, not once did I feel any teacher place judgements or speak against epidurals, c-sections, delivering in a hospital, etc. After we gave birth, we had a lot of trouble with breast feeding... but really, it was only because my milk hadn't come in! The lactation consultants in hospital were extremely negative: it felt like they just needed to check a box off their list, make sure my baby was fed, and send me on my way. They all gave different advice, and immediately wanted to put bottles and formula in our baby's mouth (note: her weight was absolutely fine, otherwise, yes, fed is best). When I got home, we called Jada who was able to meet us in our home the very next day. Jada is amazing. She spoke about breastfeeding as a relationship, not a prescription. She was kind: asked about my birth, asked what our daughter's name was (unlike the hospital employees). She came into our home and treated our situation as a new and unique one, and spoke to us with compassion, and didn't make us feel like failures. Even though my milk still did not come in until the next day or so, Jada told us to text her if and when we needed. She focused on my relationship with baby, and made that our approach to breastfeeding. Baby is healthy and happy and excellent at nursing - thank you so much, Jada! read more

My husband and I took a birth education class with Caitlin FitzGordon when I was 30 weeks pregnant. I cannot express how much this class helped us to prepare for the birth of our first child. We were so scared and nervous I had been having panic attacks all the while before. We chose to the once a week for 6 weeks class and I highly recommend this class to EVERYONE! First of all, Caitlin is a birth educator, doula and such a knowledgeable caring and warm person. Her words and calming demeanor will make you feel so at ease, to ask any question (as ridiculous as you may think it is, she will have a great answer for you everytime). I never thought that I would have an un medicated birth in a million years but I followed Caitlin's advice and waited as home for as long as possible before going to the hospital and wouldn't you know my baby was born 30 minutes later. I did it! If it had not been for all of the information (she will run you through every case scenario so you are prepared and know what to expect) knowledge is power and I promise you will feel so less anxious and worried when you know what's coming next...not only that but in this class you practice breathing, focusing, stretching, different labor positions and I followed that advice too and it totally got me through (I got in the bath, I got on all fours, I bounced on a yoga ball, all while deep breathing). I knew what to pack for the hospital, and the most major thing of all is that because of Caitlin's positivity and help I felt EMPOWERED. She made me feel like I had the inner strength to give birth to child, that to me is the most priceless thing because it gave me the confidence that I needed everyone tells you how painful and scary labor is and I think you need to prepare yourself with the tools to get through it. I think about this class often and my experience and even though my son was born almost 9 months ago I feel that this class changed my life. On a side note, I also met 7 other really great couples some of whom I still keep in touch with and see on a regular basis and our kids have playdates. and I am still in communication with Caitlin and reach out to her for postpartum guidance every once in awhile specifically when my son was 3 months and I wanted to meet other stay at home moms and join support groups she gave fabulous recommendations etc. Frankly, of all the baby things we bought this was the best investment. Oh and last but not least, I also took the CPR course (I forget the man's name but he was great!) at BDP and I went to Kelly Pitts (and still go to her for pre natal and post natal massages). They also have an acupuncturist there who hopefully I will get to see one of these days. oh and one last thing they also rent out the space for get togethers and offer a wide variety of classes if you check in with them often you can find out more about that. My wife and I took all the classes at Birth Day Presence in Brooklyn and have really learned a ton! They did a great job in the breast feeding class (and it isn't that uncomfortable for guys) teaching how to get a good latch and that pain isn't something that a woman should ever have to deal with. In the weekend long child birthing class, they taught a ton about the whole labour process, pain coping strategies, and how to prepare for the unpredictable scenarios that could come up in a highly emotional/stressful time. In the newborn care class, they taught us how to change diapers, swaddle, and what to do when your baby won't settle down. We still have to take infant CPR and the pet care classes that are coming up! The thing that I really appreciated about the Birth Day Presence teachers is that they do not push a point of view (e.g., on whether to get an epidural or not). They clearly describe the pros and cons of different options, what the statistics are, and let each couple make up their own mind. They are very careful not to bias anyone's decision, but they describe that no matter what each couple decides to do, it is very important to think about these things in advance so that you aren't making the decision for the first time during the labour process. Another area where I felt they were very strong was that they coached us to avoid making any hard decisions. They explained that we shouldn't have a "firm birth plan" but rather "birth preferences" because you never know what can come up during labour, and you want to be flexible to ensure safety for the mother and baby. It all started with Sandy Woods midwife practice recommending we take a birthing class before delivering at the St Luke's Birthing Center. Jada's class was one of the top recommendations for Brooklyn.The class recommendation was twofold,one to learn what to expect and how to handle natural birth and two to have a weekly reason to stop city life and slow down for a class followed by a date. In regards to the latter, the location of the Birthday Presence could not be any more convenient for post class dates. Every week along 5th ave we found a new place to dine and discuss the class. In regards to content and delivery, as a Papa / Birth Partner to be, I found the class had just the right pace , relaxed open atmosphere, and provided valuable information for both Mama and myself. All material was covered in a non bias open way, ie "you may want to try this or that" rather than "this is the only way to do this". Mama learned ways to cope with fear and pain, and I learned how to support during all stages of labor and post delivery. By the end of the 6 classes we had a much better understanding of what to expect. That being said our labor experience didn't go as expected, but our class and Jada's advice helped us steer the experience along a path that we wanted. Took the Childbirth Education Weekend Intensive course in Park Slope. It really helped me feel more prepared about labor & delivery. The best part was that the teacher (Sasha) was strictly no-judgement about parents' choices regarding pain management, medical intervention, delivery methods, etc. I've been reading a lot of books on childbirth and always felt like they were very preachy and hippie-ish about things like epidurals and breastfeeding. It was so refreshing to finally have useful advice for all different kind of birth scenarios. Plus, books don't talk about New York-specific childbirth concerns (taking an Uber to/from the hospital, what to expect at a busy NYC hospital--stuff like that). My partner and I attended a number of classes at Birth Day Presence before the birth of our first child, including Childbirth Ed, Infant CPR, Breastfeeding and Infant Care. Birth Day Presence is a well run outfit with a good variety of classes at convenient times and multiple locations. The infant CPR, breastfeeding and infant care classes were helpful and made us both feel better prepared to care for our daughter. The CPR class I would particularly recommend, as the instructor also helpfully covered choking and a few other medical emergencies with infants. We took the 6 week childbirth education class with Jada, one of BDP's cofounders. We had a great experience with the class. The Park Slope space is comfortable and welcoming. Jada has attended a couple hundred births as a doula and so has lots of experience. The class is really non judgmental and would be a great choice for any woman/couple just to better understand the variety of options for birth as well as learning coping techniques for labor. I appreciated that Jada seemed really up to date on childbirth literature and frequently cites current research on childbirth, as well as providing links to great resources. She's also just a really warm person who is clearly passionate about supporting women and their families throughout pregnancy and birth. read more

It's hard to feel like you're mentally and physically prepared for a first birth, but without this class I feel like we would have been going in blind. Caitlin was terrific all the way through. She was patient and knowledgeable, and never pushy or judgmental about different approaches or ideas or questions. After the 6 week course, we feel like we have a much better idea of how to attempt a natural childbirth, what kinds of things to expect or that might come up during the process, what questions to ask, and decisions we might have to make. It also brought my husband and I together in a way that we were learning and discussing and practicing these things together, which was great preparation for going through this life-changing experience. read more

Jada (one of the owners) has been our doula for the birth of both our children. She was amazing and a critical element of both births going smoothly and keeping mom in comfort and focused. It would not have gone that way without her. I highly recommend a doula esp for first time parents and, even though we haven't worked with another, I know Jada is as good as they come. We haven't been to their classes (were established after we went through the process) but I'm confident they are as high a quality as their doula services. In this overly medicalized OBGyn world, its important to have an understanding of methods both before and after birth that don't just rely on pharmaceutical solutions but ones that women have used for generations. BDP provides that. I couldn't recommend more highly. read more

My husband and I took the lactation and neonatal care class. I'd say it was ok. The space is nice and the instructor was friendly. The class ran from 6:30-9:30 in the evening, which is a tough time when you're pregnant and sitting is uncomfortable (you are encouraged to bring food and to get up and move around). Almost all of what we learned I had already gathered from looking around on the internet and talking to my doula. Moreover, the delivery of information was pretty disorganized, with a great deal of digression. So the instructor kept talking about what she was about to talk about instead of what she had intended to talk about at the moment, if that makes any sense. It made it so that the class ran a lot longer than if she had just hit each point in order. I yearned for an outline, even a powerpoint. And I hate powerpoint. Most of the digressions were helpful and pertinent, but the lack of order and the extra time wasted were kind of agonizing. You don't want to have any of your time wasted when you're super pregnant and would rather be eating dinner or sleeping. Another little complaint is that the instructor focused on birth and lactation in the best case scenario. Meaning she discussed demanding skin-to-skin contact after vaginal delivery, and mentioned that some hospitals do skin-to-skin after cesarians. She assumed that everyone except one woman pregnant with twins was going to have a vaginal birth. She didn't go into contingency plans--meaning how to make the most of a less-than-optimal situation. Which is the situation I may be in as my baby is in the breech position. I could have spoken up to get her to go into how we might try to make the best of a less than ideal situation, but I was loath to add to what was already a lengthy class. read more

We signed up for several classes and found them to be a mixed bag of super helpful and just ok. The birthing classes weren't what we expected even though they have you fill out a form at the beginning I suppose to figure out what you want to get out of the course. We felt like it was more for people who like group therapy, are pro-natural birth (even though they do talk about meds, it's not put in the best light) or for those who haven't picked up a single baby book. It was not so much about techniques to use in labor. Time could have been better used and combined with newborn care or more useful skills. The other more targeted classes were fantastic. I guess we just weren't their target audience. We might have been better off taking courses with a hospital. So they should get 4 stars, just not from people like us. A-ok. read more

My husband and I attended the Birth Day Presence weekend intensive course with Meghan and would strongly recommend it. The time flew by. Meghan is extremely knowledgeable. I felt like I could ask any question without being judged. I have read lots of books, articles and done a lot of research - even with how prepared I felt - I learned a lot of useful information. For first time moms, I would say you leave feeling a lot more prepared. I highly recommend this class. read more

We attended the Childbirth Prep, Infant CPR and Safety, and Newborn Care classes at Birthday Presence, and also used the "Breast Start" lactation consultation visit in the first few days of our baby's life. All of it was super helpful and enjoyable, and the tone was friendly and supportive. The instructors for the classes were great at encouraging and handling questions and discussion, and leading hands-on practice. The studio was lovely and comfortable. Having the home visit to work out breast feeding issues right away was a big relief. I highly recommend Birth Day Presence - it was so great as a first time parent to have their help feeling more prepared for this big adventure! read more
