    Otterburn Tower Hotel

I had planned a long weekend away so had booked this in the expectation of a pleasant weekend away…read more On arrival at the hotel our initial impression was good, the outside appearance of the hotel with its castellations seemed to make its mark, the receptionist who greeted us was friendly professional. Our room initially seemed OK however on closer inspection we had to ask the staff to change the hospitality tray as it hadn't been cleaned properly in days (it wasn't just remnants of detritus from the previous guest). The Bathroom was in great need of a thorough clean and update (again I had to ask in the morning that the bathroom be cleaned including the black mould that must have been there for weeks). I had assumed Digital TV had reached Otterburn however unfortunaltley our TV only got 4 channels so had to suffer CBBC's or T4 in the morning (never thought I would have missed Andrew Marr in a morning till then) not that I go away to watch TV but sometimes its nice to catch up with events in a morning. We ate twice here once in the Stables bar and the next night in the Hotel Restaurant both times we enjoyed the food and the service was excellent. Breakfast was fine, however it would have been better had one member of staff notice and removed the rotting apple (yes I did say rotting) from the fruit selection on the breakfast bar. After my partner removed it and left it on the side it still remained there throughout the rest of the morning. I would say that on the whole the hotel is understaffed and although all the staff who were there are pleasant and helpful, the maintenance and standards of hygiene are well below expectations. No I will not be returning here !!!

We stayed at the Battlesteads Hotel in August 2011 while walking Hadrian's Wall. Prior to the start…read moreof our walk, we were informed that when we reached Chesters Roman Fort and Museum, we should call the Battlesteads, and someone would pick us up and drive us to the hotel. However, when we called we were told it would be at least an hour before someone could come by, a bit off-putting considering we had been walking for several hours and simply wanted to shower and relax. We ended up hitching a ride with a tour group who was also staying at the hotel (we met their very kind bus driver at the tea room at Chesters), and were shown to a very small room that overlooked someone else's front yard. The room itself was comfortable, but so small there was no where to put our luggage. We simply had to step over our suitcases to move to either side of the bed. The bathroom was a bit of a surprise because it had a more modern look, complete with gray, rubbery floors. It certainly did the job, but the accommodations were not posh by any means (and I was not expecting luxury). After our showers, we had a few drinks in the garden before meeting a friend for dinner in the pub. The garden was lovely - the flowers were still very much in bloom, and a wooden fence around the property provided privacy from neighbors. It's my understanding that the pub uses fruits and vegetables grown in the garden. Dinner, on the other hand, was not what I expected from an award-winning pub (my partner informed me that the Battlesteads was "Pub of the Year" in 2010). The hake and chips was rather bland and the mushy peas did not boost the flavour profile. It seemed to me that Battlesteads was trying too hard to appear cosmopolitan, rather than focusing on good food and flavour. I appreciate locally sourced food, but it has to taste good as well.

This place is lovely- my mother and I stayed last summer for just one night, and I wish it could…read morehave been longer. We had a nice twin room- slightly dated but very clean and comfortable, I suppose you'd call it quaint. The bar areas were very comfortable, but it's the food that really got me. I surprisingly had the nicest fajitas I've tasted! They also had a great selection of local cheeses. The waitstaff are all very knowledgable about the food and wine, and were more than happy to advise. We really enjoyed our stay, hopefully we'll be able to come again.

"Public Liability and Urgent warning!"…read more I'm writing this as a matter of extreme urgency and recommendation from the Anti Snare UK. I was booked into the ground floor Millburn Apartment adjacent to the hotel grounds and public path to the river for 4 days.On Monday morning while out taking sunrise photographs a spring loaded mole trap snapped my foot, extremely lucky for me I had protective boots on and my dog had not followed me to the area. I went to reception to report this and was left standing with trap in hand for 12mins while the Abbeygale tried twice to get Simon the hotel Manager. He did not come out.I was informed he was making breakfast for a guest.I left appalled and extremely shocked and upset. On my return early evening I again went to see Simon who totally disregarded liability, ownership or responsibility and he was the owner of the premises when I enquired about Risk assessment, accident procedure, what prevent ions had been taken etc etc,he shunned all responsibility and would not even get a accident report form for me to fill out and this was also after a visit from the police earlier that day about it..He said someone else had put it there and then said it's your responsibility to report this to the police and insurance,he recorded that he was a fireman in Bellingham also and on his next shift would pop in a report it then,I have been informed from his Manager of the fire brigade that he works part time on a bleeper system. The station is a 2min walk away from the hotel. He said he did not condone these traps, that he was an animal lover and a father of two children and dog owner. The following morning I ran out to warn a gentleman with his dog who happened to be going to take a picture at the exact spot who turned out to be local and he said the hotels handyman puts them down and showed me the area and further traps.I burst out crying the shock and stress was to much. The lies and disregard to children, animals, wildlife, safety,we checked out and re routed our return journey to make a statement of incident at Hexham police station.Due to the dis regard of Guest and public safety and an incident is now registered. The hotels insurance has been notified,Simon from ant snare uk that I was nothing but a stupid woman and this is the customer service. If you want more information on how many laws have been broken and still take the chance as they do not have the liability insurance to cover traps or risk paperwork or procedures or integrate/honesty to be running a hotel.I was told they don't by Simon even hurt humans.Just google and read ,if you have the stomach press images. The pain, deseases etc etc Spring trap mole traps, visit code of practise, risk assessment it scores a 20 in red to humans, pets and protected wildlife and that's when the procedures and laws have been followed. Stayed January 2015
