Our room had a huge bathroom with free standing roll top bath and a walk in shower with dinner plate sized shower head. Anyway - the meal, was just amazing. The chef specialises in freshly cooked local produce. I had smoked salmon for starter - very simply presented and tasted just great. My main was chicken breast with wild muchrooms and dessert was a pineapple carpaccio with home made vanilla icecream. Was all wonderful. Best thing though was the steak that my husband ordered - has to have been the best steak I have ever tasted. Restaurant is small and cosy and you move through into the lounge for coffee and petit four. The lodge is set on the edge of Walkerburn, near Peebles - wonderful views out across the tweed valley. I would recommend this place to anyone. Dinner, B+B starts at £210 for 2 people - I think it is well worth it.

I found the staff more professional than warm and cozy but this is not a negative, just a sense. They were unfailingly pleasant and helpful. I was not able to book last minute for dinner as they are popular so be sure to call ahead. I was welcomed for drinks and spent a nice section of my evening there in the dining area and bar.

The first table we sat at was a bit in the middle and as Luna (the dog) likes to spread out, they asked if we would like to move to a corner table where she has more room, I really appreciated this thought. I had lamb with potatoes and a jus. The lamb was perfectly cooked and moist. There was a lot of lamb as well, great portion size. My other half had a fish pie which was jam packed with prawns, salmon and white fish. Really fab. It was during desert that they really hit the mark. I ordered a cheese board for us to share. First came the crackers. Something that really annoys me about a cheese board is that you get lots of cheese and then 3 crackers. What you meant to do with that? I usually end up having a ton of cheese and not many crackers! This was not an issue at Burts. They brought a basket of crackers...yes, a basket. I have uploaded a picture to show this delight. The cheese was all local and ymmuy as well. They also serve real ale. My partner complained that one of the ales was off. Without questions, they changed it for something else. This place is maybe a bit more pricey compared to other restaurants in Melrose but I think it is well worth it.

Everything in my room was so crisp, clean, and perfect, I could easily believe I was the first person to stay there. Excellent shower, large and very comfortable bed with high-quality linens. Two doors and a hallway separate the hotel from the pub, ensuring that none of the restaurant noise reaches the rooms. There is a post office right across the street and a news shop just down the block, and Thirlestane Castle is a short walk. We had dinner (haggis bon bons and steak pie) and breakfast (full Scottish) at the restaurant and everything was perfect. Highly, highly recommended.

They also Cater for weddings, with their room being able to hold big numbers. Lauder is like one strip of road, yes pretty much like that. You're bound to bump into locals and people from the small villages from far who travel to this place. The food has always been lovely in this place. It's worth a stay, or even for a lovely romantic meal.

The food in the Bistro and at breakfast is fantastic, it's a shame I didn't manage to try the tweed restaurant as the bar was set very high. The room was very large, as was the bed with very good furnishings and large bathroom. It fell down on the extremely weak shower performance and an old, low down TV. The location by old Abbey and the grounds of the hotel are simply spectacular. With views and grounds like these why would anyone need a TV? The hotel will loan cycles and rods for those who want to fish or explore the area. Although don't forget that fishing for Salmon or Sea Trout on a Sunday is still illegal in scotland. The hotel room guide also quaintly reminds you that although they allow legal fishing, it is 'unethical to fish for trout on a Sunday' I'd love to give this hotel 5 stars but cannot bring myself to do so as the shower was just too poor. However, would I go back? Hell yes, this is the best hotel experience I've had in a long time and will seek it out if I'm ever in the Borders again.

Our room was a standard room I think, on the ground floor. It was very spacious with a bed roughly the same size as China, 2 armchairs and a dressing table. The bed and pillows were so comfortable I could happily have taken them home! The bathroom was also spacious and well-equipped, my one complaint would be the water pressure of the shower (slightly like a kitten licking you clean!). We did not dine in the restaurant but attended a Christmas party night in the hotel - the food was fantastic, surprisingly so, as these buffet style things are usually not up to much. The main course of buffet carvery beef and turkey was fantastic - the beef melted in the mouth! Breakfast was a little disappointing (who on earth toasts potato scones!?) but plentiful. The grounds are beautiful, have a stroll around. The staff were very helpful and friendly especially the front desk staff. All in all I would recommend it, and would return here for a romantic weekend or to relax.
