We showed up ten minutes after the kitchen normally closed, but Roz asked if we had had dinner yet and said she "wouldn't have us starving." The food was delicious. A little bit of a drive but well worth it and extremely picturesque, our room was clean and very roomy, with a modern large bathroom. On arrival we were given tea or coffee while we filled in our registration and a bucket and brush to clean our hiking boots (which remain strictly in the foyer, not the hotel.) Acerbic wit with a smile was the standard and it suited us to the ground. Sean's well practiced spiels are a comedy routine in themselves so pay attention and don't miss a word. He was very helpful on tide and bus and taxi information. Our room was nicely proportioned and the bathroom spacious. I visited in another room upstairs which was equally nice. Furniture is simple, stout, workable and unpretentious. All rooms have only showers. Our towels were rough but this is probably local hard water, They were new and thick and clean. Breakfast was excellent and if you are not awake on reaching the breakfast room, I assure you that you soon will be. There is lovely art around and some of it is for sale by Sean's son. Tea service in the rooms was generously stocked with a wee biscuit or two. Check the website to see other options like renting the entire place or having a wheelchair accessible room. Fabulous choice for staying on Lindisfarne. I would most certainly return here.

It is a hotel and the reception is inside the pub so it is open all day which is unusual for many of the village pubs in this area. They serve food from noon till 3pm and 6pm till 9pm but we didn't dine so I can't comment on the quality of the food. There were three or four local beers on including Secret Kingdom and Coast to Coast from Hadrian's Border Brewery as well as the usual lagers etc. There is a pool table, and we enjoy a game, but on each occasion that we were in it was totally monopolised by the landlord and staff. I'm sure we could have put our 50p on the table but I don't think we'd have been too popular! :-) The pub is dog friendly and has a beer garden to the rear which would be a nice place to while away an hour on a sunny day. Reasonable little pub really, I'd have given it four stars if we'd been able to play pool! :-)

Prior to the start…read moreof our walk, we were informed that when we reached Chesters Roman Fort and Museum, we should call the Battlesteads, and someone would pick us up and drive us to the hotel. However, when we called we were told it would be at least an hour before someone could come by, a bit off-putting considering we had been walking for several hours and simply wanted to shower and relax. We ended up hitching a ride with a tour group who was also staying at the hotel (we met their very kind bus driver at the tea room at Chesters), and were shown to a very small room that overlooked someone else's front yard. The room itself was comfortable, but so small there was no where to put our luggage. We simply had to step over our suitcases to move to either side of the bed. The bathroom was a bit of a surprise because it had a more modern look, complete with gray, rubbery floors. It certainly did the job, but the accommodations were not posh by any means (and I was not expecting luxury). After our showers, we had a few drinks in the garden before meeting a friend for dinner in the pub. The garden was lovely - the flowers were still very much in bloom, and a wooden fence around the property provided privacy from neighbors. It's my understanding that the pub uses fruits and vegetables grown in the garden. Dinner, on the other hand, was not what I expected from an award-winning pub (my partner informed me that the Battlesteads was "Pub of the Year" in 2010). The hake and chips was rather bland and the mushy peas did not boost the flavour profile. It seemed to me that Battlesteads was trying too hard to appear cosmopolitan, rather than focusing on good food and flavour. I appreciate locally sourced food, but it has to taste good as well.

I surprisingly had the nicest fajitas I've tasted! They also had a great selection of local cheeses. The waitstaff are all very knowledgable about the food and wine, and were more than happy to advise. We really enjoyed our stay, hopefully we'll be able to come again.

There are 2 different eating styles, either bar food in the Courtyard Bar, or a la carte in the restaurant. The bar food is good, although the setting is a bit 'ordinary' compared to the rest of the hotel. Usual bar meals - fish and chips, steak pie, roast dinners, salmon etc, all freshly cooked and served by friendly and helpful bar staff. They have a good selection of malts.
