Osteria da Ugo, while not as grand as a ristorante ( think all white linen and formally dressed wait staff) is at the top end of the next level. The main menu changes with each season in the Italian style of emphasizing ingredients that are fresh and peak flavor. An internal dining area is matched with a smoking allowed, outside, dining area. Each holds about 16 x 4 person tables. Dining noise, in the European custom, is minimal. Children are welcome. It gets 5* for succeeding completely at what it is trying to do. We were greeted cordially and offered a viewing of each seating area. Menus in both Italian and English were presented promptly and graciously and questions sought and answered in both English and Italian. We made reservations on a summer Saturday night while an Alpini festival was going on in Verona but wouldn't have needed them. Although recommended by a local and opening at 7:30 to suit the foreign trade, it didn't fill until 9:00 PM. The menu follows the Italian custom of division into 5 Antipasti choices, 8 pasta or primi piatti, 10+ meats or seconding piatti including chicken, rabbit, pork, calf's liver, duck, 5 beef options, tuna, and calamari and 4 vegetable and salad choices. They also offer two different, fixed price, four course, tasting menus for 35 and 30 euros each that, if paired with house chosen wine compliments, cost 40 and 45 euros. As expected, the wine list is heavily tilted towards the wines of the Veneto with 8-10 each of Valpoicelli Superiori, ripassi, and amarone. We had a wonderful Tedeschi Ripasso for 22 euro that opened nicely and kept us at the table another 20 minutes to finish it, after dessert was cleared. An "amuse bouche" of a thin slice of a vegetable fritatta was presented prior to the first course. We started our ordered meal with chicken liver pate with onion balsamic compote and marinated salmon carpaccio. The pate was two, flavorful, triangular, slices that were 2" square, when combined, and 1/2" thick. It was smooth with the texture and a hint of the flavor of butter. The compote was a tablespoon of thin sliced onion densely pickled in balsamic vinegar. This was served with 3 inch long half rounds of 3/4" thick, sliced, grilled, coarse crumb, white, toast. The salmon had 7-8 thin slices that were 1/16 of an inch by 2 inches by 6 inches with a house made mayonnaise and 6 x 1/4 inch thick de-crusted triangles of a fine crumb toasted white bread. We split a plate of torelloni da Ugo ( if you don't recognize this, think of ravioli with 3 times the filling. ) It was stuffed with a paste of cheese, egg plant, almonds, and herbs and was served on separate plates for us in an herbed butter sauce. We then split a salad Nicoise that was about 2 cups of mixed greens with 4 tablespoons of Italian tuna, a quartered hard boiled egg, 10-15 small Nicoise olives, 3-4 x 1 inch mozzarella balls, cut in half, 8 tomato slices, and 2 tablespoons of grated carrot with a vinegrette dressing. A pepper and a salt mill were at the table as well as bottles of aged balsamic and a fruity olive oil. The dessert menu doesn't rotate with the seasons except those desserts featuring fruit are only offered in their season. We had a tiramisu ( literally "pick me up" ), and a lighter than air white cake with chocolate cream and blueberries between 3 layers. Our total bill, with wine included, was 82 euro.

A good restaurant in the centre of Verona, near Juliet's house. Don't forget to taste "Pearà", a typical dressing for meats. Very nice!

The gnocchi in this region is smaller and deeply flavored, not the usual unseasoned potato-based lumps one sees in the USA.

Osteria del Bugiardo was located in a good area so we made our way over to this wine bar. Service (2.5/5): Confusing system. There was a wait for a table but no hostess outside. We eventually talked to someone and she said that while there's no list, she will remember our faces and let us know when a table is ready. Not the most efficient system but we waited about 10 minutes to be seated at the bar. Our waiter took care of us pretty well after we got in. Ambiance (3.5/5): Your typical wine bar. Nice ambiance. The only downside for me is that seating at the bar consisted of bar stools. Without back support. Which I have always hated and which hurts my back. It's also pretty tight in there when they're at capacity. Drinks (4/5): Since this is a wine bar, you know what to order. We had glasses of rose. Not the heaviest pour but the price was solid. If you're not looking for wine, they also have things like Aperol Spritz. Food (4/5): You won't find hearty fare here but you will be able to munch on a lot of small plates. I'm talking things like mini sandwiches, croquettes, meatballs, salads, etc. Which is exactly what we did. We shared a couple of tapas between the two of us. It was filling and did the job. I wasn't stuffed but it was good and on the healthier side. Overall: Osteria del Bugiardo is one of the most popular restaurants on Yelp in Verona and it's located in the heart of the city.

It was quiet when we arrived at noon and then filled up quite a lot by the time we departed. Clearly, a restaurant for the locals. First course, a big pile of a pasta called "bigolini" which I've not seen before. It is like thick spaghetti with a rough surface. That is needed because the sauce on it was quite thick and another interesting taste - nettles. Definitely different. Second course, risotto made with a red wine reduction. Very flavorful and rich and the pasta was perfectly al dente. We'll definitely need to return to here for dinner! [Review 16980 overall - 185 in Italy - 496 of 2022.]

The restaurant is very cute (free WiFi) and homey feeling with an exposed brick interior and interesting decoration choices throughout the space. If you're so inclined there's also and outdoor patio area. Maybe we just ordered poor menu items but the food was underwhelming and not particularly standout. For our anti pasta course we went with the cured meat trio with polenta. The meats weren't particularly good and combined with the bland polenta it just wasn't a good combo. For our primi pasta course we had the bigoli in a horse (yes horse) bolognese sauce. Of our three dishes this was the best. For our main meat course with did horse cheeks braised in an Amarone wine sauce with polenta. I didn't like the polenta any better on our second dish and the cheek just didn't do it for me. I ended up leaving the bulk of the dish uneaten. All in all-maybe I just ordered poorly but I if I ever make it back to Verona this spot will be a pass for me.

They have a nice garden terrace as well as a lovely dining room inside (with AC!). Started with mixed grilled vegetables and the house cured salmon which came with a bit of salad. They do have some pasta and specials of the day, but we all had pizza, of which there is a rather wide selection to choose from. I had the melanzane which was definitely the most delicious eggplant pizza I've ever had. My husband had the "Trentino" with had wild mushrooms, Emmentaler and speck. And my son had the Capricciosa (mix of various things including prosciutto, olives, artichokes, etc.) I tasted them all and they were all great. House wine: $12.50 for a liter. Awesome deal, very drinkable and went well with the pizza. Service was attentive and efficient. I hope to return while I am staying in Verona.
