This place did not disappoint. Lured in by the simple, modern aesthetic, tempted by the descriptions of fresh locally sourced veggies, sourdough bread made in house, and intriguing flavor combinations, my friend and I were both salivating with high expectations. For 5 of the 7 dishes we ordered, Osa knocked it out of the park. The other 2 were only slightly sub-par. We started slowly with a little "snack" bowl of delightfully tangy pickled mushrooms and an order of their in-house sourdough, served warm, and crusty with a pat of cultured Vermont butter. We sampled their fresh oysters next. Thumbs up . Very fresh. Next, I had the strip steak over mashed potatoes and grilled leeks with bordelaise sauce. Deliciously flavorful and balanced with good proportions. My friend ordered two more small plates in lieu of an entrée. The clams in the New England clam chowder were tender and tasty, but the chowder itself was a little bland and watery. It was a very small serving, and came with the oyster crackers already in the soup--an interesting serving choice. The summer beans, on the other hand, were out of this world. The crispy shallot topping made the generous serving of just-tender-but-still-crunchy beans sing. I pronounced them the best beans I had ever tasted! Finally, we indulged in dessert and ordered the wild blueberry chomeur - a sticky maple bread pudding. I liked this one more than my friend did. She found it dry, and lamented the lack of the cream sauce that was described in the menu. She said it was more like a crumbly cake than a moist pudding . For some context, I went to the CT Eats Out supper club dinner featuring Osa in January 2017, so I had very high expectations for coming to Osa this past weekend. While there were definitely some great dishes, most were not as exciting or delectable as I remember it from the supper club. They were also backed up almost 45 minutes for people with reservations, which goes in the category of, "Things that make you go 'hmm?'" The space is very trendy and makes you feel like you're in the body of a ship. There's a huge communal table in the middle, but I definitely appreciated the seats with backs along the sides. Short but nice cocktail list with reasonable prices ($11). My "soon enough" was unique and refreshing. The beer list is not as interesting, but if you are jonesing for beer, you can find something you like. In terms of food, I absolutely adored the Potted Pig. You gotta ask for extra bread, though. The wood-grilled octopus was the prettiest dish and had some awesome textures. However, I wish there had been more octopus in the dish. The crispy beef shank was my husband's favorite. What I would skip: acorn fed ham (nice but very little for the price) and smoked carrots (minimal flavor). I'm glad to see Osa doing so well and would likely try it again during a different season. read more

Honestly, I'm so annoyed that I went in for ramen night. I ordered the 'sake for two' cocktail, which showed on the menu as $11. While waiting almost 30 minutes (!!!) to receive said cocktail, they came around with new menus that changed the price to $20. Doubling the price of my drink after I order it is a total bait and switch, plain and simple. I can't even discuss the food at this point because I am just disgusted by this type of business practice/management. If you are so disorganized that you printed your menus incorrectly: 1) suck it up, buttercup, or 2) at least honor the price for anything that had been ordered to that point. To make matters worse, when I specifically asked what had changed on the new menu, I was told it was a "minor misspelling." Total bullshit. I will not be back. Update 12/6/17: I have obviously struck a nerve. I am getting harassing private messages. I am being told this is my fault. "You should have done this"...and "you should have done that"...not my responsibility to make a business follow ethical practices. I also do not work in a service industry - you do - it not my job to fix your mistakes or to act in a certain way to please you. Ohhhhh-sah (like wooo-sah). After many months of anticipation, I got to experience Osa firsthand last night. The exterior is unique and eye-catching, making it an easy landmark when meeting people. The inside is just as beautiful, with exposed wood plank walls and a faux ceiling. There are tables along both side walls and a long family-style table down the middle. I love the vintage china-feel of the plates and bowls. The plates on my table all matched, so it doesn't feel like they're trying TOO hard to be vintage but instead achieve, again, a unique feel. Our waters were consistently refilled before they were emptied and our server popped up whenever we needed him (without feeling like he was hovering). The tables aren't huge and a few times we came close to having another server brush up against our plates so we were always aware of the space limitations. My only other slightly negative comment is that it was LOUD. Like, unnaturally loud for the number of people in there. My friend and I were an arms length away from each other and were practically shouting. Not really ideal. However.... everything else was top notch. We started with the bread with whipped lardo. While the bread wasn't warm, it was clearly fresh and chewy and mmmm just delicious. And! Big points here: we were given four good-sized slices, allowing two for each of us! I have been to so many restaurants where they give you 3 or 5 or even just 2 tiny slices. Four was perfect. We decided to order 3 of the mid-sized plates to share: 1. Melinda Mae cheese with sweet & sour blueberries, elderflower, purslane, sorrel & rye ($14). This came on a large round plate and was clearly set up for show, each block of cheese evenly spaced and the sorrel&rye shells daintly laid on top. I don't recall ever having purslane before but now I am a little obsessed and need to grow some of my own. We probably ate about half of this but could have easily devoured the rest as a dessert. 2. Roasted & marinated sweet corn with preserved cherry blossom, almond & marigold ($10). I wanted to take this bowl home with me. I looooved the pattern. I wish this dish had been served warm but that really didn't take away from the flavors. Crunchy and sweet and altogether otherwise perfect. We had about 1/4 left at the end of our night and both wanted to take the few remaining bites home. 3. Pork agnolotti with smoked tomato sauce, diva cheese fonduta, black olive crumbs & basil ($14). Another dish I wish had been served warm, this was more like room temperature but, again, that didn't take away from our enjoyment of it. This was the first dish we finished completely, basically licking the bowl for remnants. The olive crumble on top was an added bonus. A fantastic evening with great company and memorable food. Farm to Table foodies will enjoy this new restaurant in the ever growing list of places to eat in downtown Middletown My favorite feature is the ambiance set by the custom wood paneling and lighting features inside the dinning area and bar seating. I will say that if you come in to eat a meal that will fill you up, you will need to order one the large plate options to split between you and another person. Two couples dined there last week, one a vegetarian. We all loved Osa. We ordered Whipped Ricotta app, the cantaloupe app and the pickles. All were innovative and tasty. For mains we have the Cavatelli, which was very good, the seared sea scallops which were among the best I've ever tasted, and the seacoast mushrooms, which were terrific. Also a very tasty arugula salad. Unusual to have such broad success at a first visit to a restaurant! The service was quite good, and the cocktail list was very impressive. We ate here last night for a friend's birthday and I cannot stop thinking about how amazing the food was. We started off with the housemade bread and butter ... I mean, come on...it was delicious..if the bread and butter was that good I was really excited to get my entree. My husband and I decided to split the burger and scallops. The burger was OUT OF THIS WORLD. For $15??? It was seriously one of the best I have had. The meat just melted in your mouth, the brioche was perfectly soft and toasted, and that cheese... yum. Then the scallops.. wow. Nicely seared on the outside, very fresh tasting. The kimchi and mushrooms were so tasty. I definitley want to come back again. Dined in at Osa for dinner this week to celebrate my boyfriends birthday. I'll start off with the positives- we ordered the goat cheese and octopus to start- both delicious. For our main courses we order the bolognese and the burger- also very good. However our server Ben was MIA. After he dropped off our meals I told him we'd like to order a few more drinks in few minutes and he never came back until well after we finished our meals. Actually, another gentleman working there came over and asked if we'd like another drink while clearing our empty glasses... Dessert time came and when I spoke to the girl over the phone when making my reservation I asked if it were possible to make note of my boyfriends birthday and to have a candle in his dessert and she said she would be happy to and they would inform the server. However, when we received our dessert it did not come with a candle. On top of it we had no water left and no server around to bring us another bottle. What looked to be the manager came over and asked if we needed anything and I just asked for the check so we could get drinks somewhere else. I've eaten here a couple times now. The food is above average, with some dishes excellent. They make use of a wood oven, which can give a very robust flavor to their food. The severs we've had were excellent, both knowledgeable and friendly. The atmosphere is also pretty good, very clean and modern looking with unique wood walls and ceilings. I'm docking it one start for two reasons. First, when it's busy, this place can be loud. They manage to fit a lot of tables and chairs in there, plus a bar. I erroneously thought the wood paneling and ceiling would absorb some of the noise, but it doesn't. The second con is that this place can be expensive. Take a look at their online menu before you go in. It's easy to walk away spending more money than you thought you would going in. We had a nice dinner here last night. The restaurant decor is cool - very Scandinavian, clean and modern. It was pretty empty around 6ish on a Friday night but the restaurant and the bar filled up by the time we left. We had a nice waitress that gave us a good suggestion of what to order for 2 people (1-2 snack, 3 small, 1 entree to share). The wine and cocktail selection was good and was able to try a wine that I never had before. After reading about the plate sizes, I thought they would be small but they weren't as small as the reviews make it sound. The snack plates and a small plate we ordered came out first: bread & lardo, charred Brussel sprouts as well as a pork tratto (?). The bread was hearty and delicious. I really loved the pork dish, it was my favorite of the night. Sprouts were ok, I prefer them flash fried but my husband liked it. Second round was two more small plates: grilled octopus and baked gnocchi. The flavors in the gnocchi were delicious with a meaty sauce and cheese, texture was really mushy but I still liked it. The octopus was our least favorite dish, too salty, a ton of sauce, and very burnt tasting since it overly charred. Last dish that came out was the fluke entree. We were already full by then, so in hindsight, we should have ordered one or two less dish. Fish was cooked really well. All the dishes we had were really interesting with a lot of different ingredients and flavors - pickled veggies, crispy prosciutto, various sauces, etc... Some of these dishes worked, others didn't. I have to agree the prices were a bit steep but we knew that going in. For example, they have great bread but do I really want to spend $6 for 4 slices of bread and spread and $14 for one octopus tentacle? For 2 people, we spent $120 before tip. Overall, it was a nice dining experience but not a restaurant we would go to on a regular basis. I still hope they do well in Middletown, it's cool to see a very different and unique restaurant open up here. read more

I posted the first Yelp review for this restaurant when it opened. I went for dinner yesterday, with an old friend who was new to it. It remains as good as ever, probably the best restaurant in central CT and possibly the whole state. The chef André has hit his stride in the last couple of years and is consistently creative and attentive to quality. I´ve noticed in the past year or more that he´s been experimenting with Spanish flavors and inventive flair. Yesterday was a case in point: we had the seared scallops with a romesco sauce and shaved radishes. Unlike many American restaurants, which often confuse romesco with an Italian tomato sauce, André´s was all about the nuts and complexity: hazelnuts, in this case (in Spain, too: almonds and pine nuts, chile peppers, herbs, garlic, etc.). We shared the split pea soup, but here again André surprises: who knew split pea soup could work cold, in this case thick, with a nice crunchy, salty counterpoint (bacon?) and a dollop of creme fraiche? We finished with Osa's stacked, piping hot, decadent chocolate chip cookies. The coffee and cocktails, as usual, were equally excellent. The staff as always friendly and helpful. The space has been updated since the fall, with highlights and partitions meant to muffle some of the sound bouncing off the beautiful blonde-wood interior, enhancing its already splendid look and feel. The owners of this restaurant, Rich and Kevin, are also responsible for the equally good and beautiful wood-fire pizza, bourbon, small plates, and cocktail joint, Krust, up the street. I should probably give Osa a higher rating since it seemed like everyone else in my group of 10 enjoyed their meal. And it was busy on a Wednesday night, so the restaurant is clearly popular. But I was disappointed even though the food was tasty and the service was fine (the server didn't even groan when asked to provide separate checks for our large party.) But I was annoyed at how inflexible they were: there were several "burger and beer" specials for $22. (No burgers listed elsewhere on the menu.) I asked if it was possible to get a burger without the beer - the waiter said "yes, but the price will still be $22." Rather high for a burger and fries, IMO. Then I asked if I could sub a different drink of similar cost - but again, not allowed. My other gripe was the poor value for the money. I ended up getting the smaller serving of spaghetti with pesto, for $16. It was tasty, but not worth the money. Neither the ingredients in the dish or the time involved in preparing it warranted that price for such a small serving. read more

I would give Osa more stars if I could. My husband and I love to go out to dinner, and obviously, we love great food (who doesn't). After discovering Osa shortly after it opened, it quickly became our go to spot. The food has never been any less than excellent. I would say that they serve modern American dishes with unique spins. They truly think about each dish and each ingredient they use. I have not had one bad dish here. Many ingredients are locally sourced, which is something I appreciate very much, and the menu is continually changing to accommodate that. Beyond the delicious food, I love the atmosphere. The decor inside is very chill and modern. We love to sit at the bar every time it's just the two of us and love the bartenders we've had. The service is always spectacular, and easy to make conversation. We are moving at the end of the month, and to be honest, I will miss Osa the most out of everything in Connecticut. Visited OSA for the first time last Friday and wanted to try a few things on the menu. We started with the bread and marinara with goat cheese, wood roasted olives, the scallop small plate and the oysters. For dinner 2 of us had the smash burger and one had the pasta special (large). Paired with some tasty old fashioned cocktails we enjoyed our meal overall however for my taste the experience was a bit on the pricy side for what you get. I think the only menu items we would skip on were the bay scallops I get it's a small plate but for $21 it was laughable and frankly a boring dish. The oysters as well was kinda out there in pricing as 6 oysters was $19 delish yes but I've had great oysters at a better price point. Both of us enjoyed the smash burger and the fries were fine pretty standard fries overall but I felt like it was missing some crunch maybe some pickles or a slice of onion or tomato would of done the burger some extra justice but I think it's just a preference thing for me. The osa pasta was $28 for the "large" portion but I found it to be enough for 1 person again a very tasty dish but it doesn't come with a protein so again for the price point it's not something I personally would order. My review may be kind of all over the place but the ambiance I found to be nice paired with a beautiful bar and a menu that seems to focus on seasonal ingredients I would say I would come back when the menu changes and see what else they are offering. I had an excellent experience. The design, food, s d service were all great. I had the octopus starter and the steam bavette. Both had a mix of textured and flavors that made each bite a well balanced and delicious joy. I topped it off with French press coffee and the Mexican hot chocolate mousse which was the same - chile and cinnamon and salt and a seared meringue disguised as a marshmallow on top. I savored every course. My server was excellent - she was attentive, kind, and helpful. The design is lovely. First time in Middletown during a week on the road and what a great find. Had very high hopes for this place and wanted to LOVE it, as Main St Middletown can use more exciting additions to its restaurant scene. In a nutshell, the food is ok, but nothing stood out as memorable in a good way. Osa is very expensive for what you get, compared to the average CT gastropub, dinner spot, or small plates restaurant. As a party of two, we burned $100 on drinks and small plates and did not leave satiated, which was a disappointment. I'd say that I liked it, not loved. I love the decor, the huge community table, and the atmosphere. I like the bar much more than the Krust bar, because of the improved layout, materials and the unique little pass-through, window-into-the-kitchen that is part of the backdrop of the bar. Cocktails: fun and tasty with trendy hipster flare and ingredients. Lots of amari and slightly smaller servings, compared to your typical franchised restaurant cocktail. Main Entrees: Upon my visit, there were only about three entrees to choose from, one being vegetarian. These were priced in the $20-$30 and none of them intrigued me enough to compel me to want to order one. I'm guessing the restaurant's strategy here is "quality, not quantity" to an extreme extent. Small Plates/Tapas: Emphasis on SMALL for the money. A serving is only enough for one person, not even enough for one person. Lots of choices in this category. None of these items have a short name to identify them by. Each item is listed on the menu simply by its ingredients, which is unique, though I wouldn't say enjoyable! Basically all of these costed more than $10 and were very small. When each dish arrived, there was that feeling of being a little surprised in a bad way, amused and wanting to laugh a little at the itty-bitty, diminutive size of the food. Furthermore, none were so delicious that I'd desire to order it again. We had a deconstructed salad type thing that was actually *not good*, the flavors were off. Another plate literally came with about 5 or 6 clams on it. Tiny clams! In their shells! I could inhale this entire thing in one bite - and it was again, over $10, and was not tasty, it was sort of bland. Everything else we had, including the pork agnolotti were fine, good enough, I'd eat them anytime if someone gave them to me for free, but I wouldn't pay the price tag for those portion sizes again. Had all these dishes costed $3-6, it wouldn't have been nearly as frustrating or disappointing. If money is no thing and you can spend whatever, then you can leave here with a full belly after ordering one of each small plate on the menu. OR, order an entree to make sure you leave satisfied. Wow! A must try on Main Street. Been meaning to try this place for a while and finally made it... did not disappoint. Between the three of us we tried seven dishes including the chicken roulade and burrata pictured. All was phenomenal and our sever, Amelia, was great offering us great recommendations and an orange dessert that was also delicious!! It's safe to say we will definitely be back! Osa, Krutst's brother restaurant, is an American hipster take on tapas plates. It's a well-to-do restaurant (almost always fully occupied, reservations welcome) that comes off indie-hip at first but is actually deceivingly affordable. Without drinks, my two companions and I only spent $75 pre-tip to ACTUALLY be full, which is pretty phenomenal for tapas, I think - I'm always left hangry with a huge hole in my wallet. This time, I had none of those experiences. Asking the question of "what's usually good here?" was a bit difficult for our waitress to answer - her reason being that Osa has a revolving weekly menu dependent on what's available from the local farms, all the food coming locally, which is a great plus. We decided to try a variety of small plates to maximise the things we'd be able to taste, while getting a burger...just in case. Some of the small plates also came as a "large plate" option, if you were interested in that. The small plates we ordered were as follows: Pork Pâté with homemade spicy mustard - the mustard was truly spectacular, but I didn't think the pork pate had anything exceptional going for it; Crispy Smashed Potatoes that came with a dill pickle mayo which was great - sort of like maduros, where the starch is smashed, but not really much else going for the potatoe, the sauce again, was amazing; Tapping Reeve Cheese that came with a Spanish honey, tasted like a parmesan/asiago, really great flavor, but again, nothing exceptional; Scallop Crudo that came raw with mango, it was fine but lacked any real nuance to the flavor, it had the fault of other scallop dishes which was leaving the oily grit feel to your teeth. The Beef Tartare with the same mustard and the burger were probably my favourite dishes of the night. The tartar had excellent flavor in it and the freshness of the dill was a great complement. The burger was cooked to the perfect amount of redness and really held the flavor of the cow with the melted cheese and aioli-like sauce leaving you wanting more. There must have been something about the roll as well - it's a bit unexplainable, but I really enjoyed the burger. However, be prepared, as the burger and tartar took a while to get to us. Despite being full, we ordered the chocolate chip cookies cooked in pork fat for dessert, and they were truly rich in a way that wasn't expected, ranking as one of the top cookies we've ever had dining out. All in all, the dinner was solid, but save for the tartar and burger, I didn't think anything was that imaginative or interesting about the food. The first time at OSA was on New Year's Eve! I was so excited they reopened! I started off with the roasted olives and let's just say I went back again and immediately order those! Yum. I also had the baked goat cheese dip, I love my cheese so creamy with a burst of flavor would recommend!! Since their menu is limited and I'm a pescatarian for my entree I had the octopus ala plancha and their sweet potato gnocchi!! And wow those appetizers were amazing, my friend had the duck and said it was delicious, perfectly cooked and well seasoned. The second time at OSA I had a couple of their cocktails and their chocolate mousse and cookies. Look out for their menu, they have added new items since the last time I visited. My wife and I came to Osa for the first time for my birthday last month. We had been meaning to go for quite some time, and boy were we glad we finally did! The aesthetic is unique; there's nothing quite like it on Main Street in Middletown, with the possible exception of (of course) their sister restaurant, Krust. Although my wife and I sat at the bar (they were fairly booked due to Wesleyan's graduation being that weekend), we absolutely loved the idea of a communal table. The food was absolutely outstanding. The creativity, the care of ingredients, the flair, and most importantly, the taste! We had the carrots, octopus, beef heart, and a flourless chocolate and almond cake for dessert. I'd describe each one, but their menu changes regularly, so you'll just have to go and see for yourself. The cocktails were also fantastic. Madison, our bartender, was incredibly personable, friendly, and knowledgeable. We also delved into some rarer whiskeys and whatnot, from Balcones Brimstone to Kavalan Fino. We usually don't go that crazy (the Kavalan was $55 for an ounce, although Mads topped it off a little for me :-) ), but since it was my birthday, why not? Madison was certainly inviting in her work behind the bar, which made it very easy and comfortable to spend several hours there. All in all, this one trip made Osa one of our favorite spots. This place is just amazing. First time here and just wondering why there isn't a huge line in front of it to get a table. My favorite spot from now on in all CT. Food, drinks, wine, hospitality, ambiance...it's all amazing! Congratulations to whoever created this place and to all the ppl that work so hard to bring to the table such an amazing experience!!!!!
