Ortanic's latest location is now open! And I was lucky enough to experience a complimentary full airbrush tan experience as part of their one day only opening promo. I made an appointment with airbrush ace, Lauren, who couldn't have made me feel more at ease. We went through my consultation, during which she assessed my skin and determined my own personalized tan formulation. What works for one person won't necessarily net optimal results on another... I expressed that I wanted a realistic golden glow, and she was happy to oblige. I stepped into the super fancy booth and Lauren meticulously applied the tan solution via airbrush in about 25 minutes. Not a crevice was missed! Thanks to Lauren's precise instructions, she had me turning, posing and adjusting to make sure she coated all of my skin evenly. Then, we repeated and did one more coat! After she was finished, she dried me and then applied baby powder to any "high friction" spots (think armpits, behind the knees, etc). She let me know I'd turn a few shades darker in the next few hours due to the cosmetic bronzer, but promised I'd be the perfect shade after I rinsed off 8-10 hours later. And she was right - Holy tan lines! I haven't seen anything of the sort on my washed-out, almost-olive skin on more than a few months now. There's certainly a fine line between looking tan and looking like you've rolled yourself in a bag of Cheetos dust. Have no fear here. I've been visiting this location at least once or twice a month. I feel I leave with a longer lasting color than with the stand up spray tans like Mystic or the Norvell. Those do-it-yourself'ers make me feel like a full blown Dorrito (orange), or like I'm Ross from friends. See that episode?? (too many directional stops and hand gestures to do, all to avoid getting too much on one side, or not enough leaves you having cheesey poof fingers and toenails. Ew.... At Ortanic (located in FFC) Serena R. does a great job. She's very thorough and has been with Organic since I started. I was intrigued when I received a coupon online (which by the way they offer all the time). Instead of a machine, she personally airbrushes you and you can pick the tone. There isn't anything she forgets. Super detailed and a great conversationalist. There are heaters to dry you after as well. Sometimes that cool air spray can be CHILLING (thank you space heater). When the million robot man poses are over, she can give you a post spray so the tan lasts longer. She will also powder your sticky parts. (watch it now) Powders the armpits, back of legs and Achilles tendons. Hint, wear comfy dark clothes, and leave the tan as long as possible for longer results before you shower. It sounds dramatic, but I think Ortanic has changed my life! I was also a frequent tanner growing up but swore it off about 3 or 4 years back since I don't want to be all wrinkley when I am old. My legs were seriously so frightening, I was almost invisible I was so pale! I had been debating a spray tan for ohhh 2 years (seriously it isn't that big of a deal, I don't know what my problem is) and I finally bought the Yelp Deal! Like everyone else says, Lauren is really awesome. I was a little nervous about stripping down in front of a stranger, but she totally made me feel at ease and explained the whole process to me. It went really fast and was super easy! My tan is AWESOME! I am already obsessed and want to go every week! haha. I totally feel like this has changed my life because now I am much more healthy looking. It is amazing. I also hate the self tanner smell and it really isn't there with this stuff. Every once in a while I will get a whiff, but I really don't smell it. Don't be scared, the night before you are TAN like Jamaican Tan, but then in the morning when you shower you are a beautiful bronzed goddess (or god, I suppose:) ). Ortanic expands! Pale persons of the world, REJOICE! I have been a fairly loyal patron of Ortanic since the Summer of 2009, when I "found" myself. My tan self. Back then, it was just one little location within the Equinox gym near North/LaSalle, and though adequate...I think we all knew the Ortanic crew had...well, outgrown themselves. Now! Ortanic lives within FFC locations on Halsted (Boystown), Gold Coast and Lincoln Park (North/Sheffield). Holla for the the Vitamin D deficient. Though this won't help with that, you'll look a lot better. Healthier. Glowing. Like you just stepped off the boat from a cruise with your baseball star boyfriend. Ok, not that far. But close. So, consider me a big fan. I am a woman who might be deemed "melanoma-prone" and thus haven't been in a tanning bed in a very long time. Similarly, I don't leave home without at least a coat of SPF 30 on my face. Aside from one good "burn" each spring from my Florida beach trips, I got used to being my pale self. I was OK with that. But then I got engaged. And realized, that "one good burn" from Florida had left me with a tan line. I refused to be that bride with the tan lines. So I checked out Ortanic. Since my first visit, I've been sprayed by both Ale and Lauren. Both girls are incredibly sweet and accommodating. Yeah, you're showing them your lady (or guy) bits within a few moments of meeting them, but they make you feel comfortable instantly. I can't speak highly enough about both of them and their spraying skills. And the results? Lovely. Per my request, I was sprayed the lightest of the colors, and I still felt like a real golden girl. Not a tan line in sight, HOORAY. My one star deduction has NOTHING to do with Ortanic or its employees, but I do feel I must mention this. On two occasions when I headed into FFC for my tanning, the front desk staff was a bit brusque and didn't quite have it together. Getting change to leave a tip was like pulling teeth and I was left both times waiting for quite a long time past my appointment without any sort of explanation or apologies. Face it, if I'm paying $60 (after tip) for 15 minutes of a service, the front desk people have to get it together. Came here on a yelp deal... 2 custom spray tans for $40, woop! Lets be real, you're standing naked in front of someone painting your body, you wanna feel comfortable with that person and Lauren fits the bill! She was super friendly and just an overall nice person. She talked with me about my color and how dark I wanted to be. She delivered perfectly! My tan was dark but not orange or fake looking. I did have a few weird streaks in my armpits and on my hands... it was a HOT day when i got my spray tan and I'm sure sweating had something to do with it. The second time I went I told Lauren about the issues I had and she apologized and tried letting those areas dry a little longer and went a little lighter. Second time around it was much better. Still had some mild streak effect in the armpit area and hands but only I would notice, seriously. I am actually going back in Oct before a wedding that I'm in. I'd say I'm hooked! This place is hands down my favorite spray tan in chicago, and I have tried quite a few. My tans are consistently the right color because they keep a record - I've made crazy requests "tan like 3 days in cabo" or "like i was really tan last month but now its just faded to a glow" or "like a tan that snooki would be jealous of" and they have hit it right on the mark every time. The girls are very nice and do a great job with the color, which is helpful as you have to stand there naked with your boobs and butt are directly in their face. The tan itself is great, minimal streaking - lasts a long time (DONT use Dove Products, it breaks down the tan). They offer a primer before, it costs a few dollars more, but moisturizes your skin (youre not supposed to lotion your skin before a spray, so my skin was crazy dry) and helps your tan last longer. Ortanic is great. I probably would have never gone if it weren't for the yelp deal, but I have to say, my tan turned out fantastic. I wanted a base coat before I went to a festival so I wouldn't be "that pasty girl in a bikini" and it turned out so natural I couldn't believe it! I'll just say it: I look HOT. I went from ice queen to bathing-beauty-to-be in about 15 minutes. Watch out, Florida! OK, I've had some good spray tans in the past, but the difference at Ortanic is personalized, pleasant service from Lauren and a very natural looking glow. I asked for a light tan and that's exactly what I got: golden, mellow, and even. "Sun-kissed" is how Lauren described it. Amazing Amazing Amazing.......Amazing! Ortanic airbrush tanning might just be life-changing. Too much? Okay, let's go with a major self-confidence boost. Ortanic on North Ave has maybe the best spray tanner known to man, Lauren. She's the sweetest person and she makes you feel comfortable while you are stripped down getting sprayed! It takes a little getting used to and Lauren is just so nice and helpful. She will listen to you when you ask to have a bit of color, or look like you spent all day at the beach, or look like you just came back from a week at the Caribbean. She'll ask you if you would like to be more or less tanned on your face, etc. In short, Lauren makes it so effortless and accomodating that the spray tan is just a joy. And the results are great! As long as you follow directions (don't shower for around 8 hours, exfoliate and shave before, etc) you should be able to keep your tan for up to a week. I get so many compliments on my spray tans and no one asks me if it's a spray tan. All I hear is, "You're so tan!" After 2 spray tans, I'm definitely a believer and look forward to getting my next spray tan with Lauren! read more

Such a disappointment. I got a spray tan once before and it was fine, but I went back a few days ago and received the worst spray tan ever. I even paid for the pre and post lotion which did not extend the tan at all. After two days (and one shower) I am extremely splotchy all over. I get spray tans often and am very aware of the prep and after care. Waste of money. Not to mention it's a bit orangey. It's upsetting because the first spray tan I received here was a pleasure experience, not sure what changed. read more

I bought the Yelp deal for the Ortanic spray tan that I'd been dying to try at my gym. AMAZING! Lauren mixed and created a color just for me and I thought that made Ortanic stand out amongst the rest! Make sure you exfoliate and avoid lotion and anything Dove or Oil of Olay prior to self tanning. I'm not sure why, but that was the advice I was given. If you're even slightly considering getting a spray tan-leave it to the professionals and go to Ortanic. Anytime that you can have someone manually spray you....it's a win win! I've gone to Ortanic several times for spray tanning, both their Gold Coast and Lincoln Park locations, and always loved the results. They are friendly, professional, and they will customize your color without trying to up-charge you (I've been to salons who charge more for deeper color!) I have also tried the automatic spray tan booths, and it does not compare to the custom air brush application. A few tips: - I prefer to go in the afternoon/evening so I can wait to shower until the next morning - Wear dark clothing (they often say "loose", but yoga pants are fine) - Take advantage of the powder for your elbow/knee creases - you can also re-apply powder at home to prevent crease marks - Make sure you are careful in rain or around water for a few hours afterward so you don't get water marks - BE CAREFUL IN THE SUN AFTERWARD. I had an appointment on a Monday night before leaving for Miami Tuesday morning when I got an email from the co-founder saying the girl who was scheduled to give me a spray tan had gone home with the flu and was unable to do it, but that they wanted to reschedule at their other location for the same time and give me 15$ off of my service (WOW, Nicest thing ever)!!! It worked out perfectly, I still got my spray tan before my trip and it looked fantastic. The girl who did it was so nice, explained the whole process perfectly and even told me that if it wasn't dark enough after i took my shower she'd fit me in before I left for Miami for a quick top coat for free, such a nice offer! But it ended up looking amazing and it was the perfect color so there was no need for me to even take her up on it. This is a great company, the prices are very reasonable and everyone is friendly, but still professional. Definitely suggest going here if you don't like using tanning beds, another plus is you don't smell like fake tanner after, it has no scent! Thanks for everything David!! I absolutely love this place. Custom airbrush tanning to not only compliment / match your skin tone, but so you can get as much / as little color as you want?! Genius. All of the girls here are so nice, the facility is beautiful, clean, and spa-like. I tried the place out before a wedding in March. I just wanted a little color, but also wanted it to look not too-over-the-top for a Chicago winter. The color came out perfect, lasted for about two weeks, although my face and hands faded faster. I got so many compliments from people asking where I'd been on vacation. None of them believed me at first that it was a fake tan. I've been going back ever since. I'm addicted. Unfortunately, I travel a lot for work. Crazy hours, crazy times sometimes for extended periods of time. I have gone to three other airbrush tanning places in major metropolitan areas when I have been away from Chicago and Ortanic is by far the best. Their tans come out the most even, last the longest, fade the most naturally, and smell the best (some places use product that smell really strongly of sunless tanner). With many apologies, Lauren kindly took me in walking me through basic steps of maintaining the tan, what is to come out of the tan, & etc - as we proceeded to rush to head to the spray room. Ortanic is absolutely the best tan around. I have tried them all..yikes. It is definitely the most expensive airbrush tan BUT it is always exactly what I want and makes me feel awesome. I am always willing to spend a tad more for stellar customer service. These people completely 'get it.' For example, Lauren has airbrushed me for all my major events including my baby shower (YIKES, poor lauren!) she makes me feel so comfortable even when Im feeling not so cute. Today I went in and again feeling not so cute (1.5 months after baby eeek) and she made me feel awesome...the girl even remembered what I was planning on naming my son!! That definitely made me feel special. Also..on another occasion I left a message with their office bc I wanted to purchase a gift card for mobile tanning for a friend. At the time they did not have gift cards yet..I got a call back from the actual owner within 15 minutes..who worked with me to make an exception and make it happen. I have been a client of Ortanic for about a year now and have been to every one of their locations. It's rare with a chain w/multiple locations that you'll find the same level of service throughout. I went to FFC Gold Coast to get spray tanned. I have never been spray tanned, so I was a little nervous. From the second I walked in Lauren made me feel at ease. She explained everything, she asked me questions, she asked if I had any questions; she genuinely wanted to make sure I was comfortable before she began the process. I didn't want it to look super fake - so I asked her what she would be doing. Her response was, "I can make you look like you were in the Caribbean for a week, or I can make you look like you layed in the sun in Chicago for a weekend". I loved that! So I got to choose - since it's the dead of winter, I opted for the second choice. After she was done meticulously airbrushing the tan on, she told me everything that was going to happen. She told me my skin was going to get darker as the night went on...not to freak out....it would be fine in the morning when I showered. So, when I went to bed, I looked crazy-tan, but when I woke up & showered I looked great! It's the perfect amount of tan - not too much, not too little - and I chose that! This place is great! I had jalen(sp?) and it was my first spray tan ever. I presented her with every issue in the book. Peeling legs, dry skin, peeling chest and messed up tan lines. She did great! I expected things to look really splotchy and it's not. My tan lines for the most part are covered (they were super white from a first sunburn) and my peeling legs look much better! I bought the Chicago Yelp deal for Ortanic awhile ago and was immediately hooked. Making the appointment online is simple and Lauren is fantastic. She makes you feel comfortable and chats with you and makes the experience completely positive. The instructions on preparation for the spray-tan are clear and concise. If you follow them you will have a great result. I also bought the personal bronzer which lasted over a month and really gave a extra boost to my hands and face. Since my first appointment I have been back 2x and I will keep going. I will never go back to a tanning bed again because Ortanic is beyond better for you and the results are remarkable. After multiple tans you will become a pro at preparing your skin and my best advice is if you get a spray tan twice in 2-3 weeks make sure the day before your next scheduled tan to take a hot shower to get the entire previous tan off of you, this will remove all the breakdown and provide a longer lasting future tan. Also, to keep your tan longer, after your appointment do not take hot showers until your current tan has washed away and you are ready for your next one. Because of Ortanic I have kicked my addiction to tanning beds. I am now 35 and have spent many many years ruining my skin in tanning beds. I was always looking for that glow to make me feel good. Though I have no other airbrush tanning experiences to compare it to, I was very pleased with my airbrush tanning experience at Ortanic (I went to the Lincoln Park location). Yay - finally a reliably beautiful, natural looking tan without all the damaging effects of the real thing! Lauren was my tanning girl, and she was just as good as all the other reviews say - friendly, thorough, makes the experience as un-awkward as possible, etc. She follows up afterward with an email to make sure everything turned out alright. As a whole, my tan lasted better than I'd expected. My arms seemed to stay tan for 3 weeks (very impressive for how much I sweat - which is supposed to speed up fading), but my legs didn't last longer than 4 or 5 days (I'm sure shaving doesn't help). Big plus that they have online appointment scheduling. When I made a mistake booking though, there was no way to delete it. Also some of the good (evening) times seem to book up fast - understandable I suppose. The regular price is pretty high ($45 +tip for a week-long tan only works for super-special occasions on my budget), but there have been promotions on yelp deals and others that bring the cost down. read more

Love spray tans from Ortanics! I've been to a few other places for a spray tan in the past, and this color here is the best and most even. Also, the girl who did my tan (can't recall her name) was very professional and made me feel comfortable. She was also great about asking questions in terms of how dark I wanted to be, whether or not I wanted the same level of tan on my face, etc. Recently I tried a custom airbrush tan at L.A. Customer Service!!:::: I had an appointment for a mobile spray tan, to be sprayed at my apartment, but there was a problem with the equipment so the owner picked me up in his own car and dropped me back off at home so I could spray at a location. I was spraying for my honeymoon and they knew how important the spray was to me, so awesome that they did this. This was my first spray with them, and I have sprayed many places before. This spray tan smells good, they used the most precision i've experienced from anywhere, and they dust on a powder so you don't get crease lines! After researching places i settled on this one. I did a little research (even found a coupon!) and went ahead and booked an appointment for the same day. Theres a video on the website that shows you get a glass of wine upon arrival while going over your skin color consultation. It notes itself on being friendly, experienced, and customer focused. I walked in and was coldly greeted. I was then led across the hall and told to sit, fill out my paper and wait for Jalen. Two seconds later a woman appears and says my name followed by, "follow me!" I assumed this was Jalen... We walked into a room and she started her 'schpeil'. She spoke so fast and continuously i hardly got a word in nor understood what she was saying. She finished up with, "so what color do you want??" Meanwhile, im thinking, where's my wine!? Haha! I asked if she could give a better descriptor or if she had a palette to look at in which she barked, "No! What color you want??" I told her what i had in mind and she immediately started. She was NOT personable not friendly. The entire time from check in to finish i felt incredibly rushed (i was on time for my appointment!)!! I asked a couple questions and she stared at me and answered me condescendingly. She did not put powder on all the spots of skin that touch so by the time i arrived home every single crease in my body was bare and white! I give 3 stars because i like the color and the price... OMG-Lauren did an AMAZING job. She's super sweet, informative, professional, and made me feel really comfortable. I went in the day before my brothers wedding-so I was a little nervous how it would turn out since I was a bridesmaid. She walked me through the whole process and put me at ease.
