Orlando's Café on Route 31, Hopewell, NJ, is an old roadside attraction, serving mainly local folks from this part of northern Mercer County with three squares a day for many decades under different ownership. This is a beautiful part of New Jersey, and it is a nice drive from anywhere to get there. In warm weather they even have a soft ice cream walk up that I am told on solid authority whips up excellent frozen custard-like tongue pleasers. I took a seat at the counter on the end nearest the dining room. The few guys who were there before me soon finished their breakfasts and departed, leaving me the only one to chat with the servers. They were very nice, and took good care of me with hot coffee and timely delivery of my french toast short stack. The view from my perch showed that everyone was busy on the floor and in the kitchen. The back counter area was a little disheveled, but I was not there as an efficiency expert. I just wanted a good breakfast in a winning place. The house is quite homey as would be expected from a more than fifty year old food joint. Everyone seemed to know everyone else, and it was possible to overhear tales of the local hogs and heroes. All the while, the Bunn coffee machine kept my mug full of their strong Joe. The FT was made of white bread and egg dip. Pros were that the mix completely saturated the slices. The cons were that the bread was so thin that a lot of egg remained on the surface of the bread making it impossible to permit the caramelization of the edges to the crispness I prefer. Too, I may not have tasted a strong enough vanilla/sugar egg mix to foster the chemical reaction with hot steel that I was hoping for. Still, it was acceptable, and I enjoyed the overall experience. I would certainly return to Orlando's, especially in the summer when I could enjoy their soft serve as dessert after a good burger or cheesesteak at lunch or dinner.

Mountainhome Diner has been around for years and is your typical diner with all-day breakfast available. It's clean and the staff were exactly what you want in a diner with friendliness and hospitality. I went with a breakfast sandwich with bacon, egg, and cheese on a croissant with some well done potatoes. My friend had the scrapple with some scrambled eggs. I also had an orange juice. The orange juice I did not care for. Definitely not fresh squeezed. But the sandwich was excellent along with the potatoes. My friend also loved his coffee and scrapple with egg. My meal came to $11 not including tip. We'd come back!

The current owners since 2017 are husband and wife restaurateurs Ali and Etab Abullattif. The enormous menu features classic staples such as omelets, pancakes, eggs benedict, french toast, waffles, breakfast sandwiches, breakfast wraps, salads, sandwiches, paninis, burgers, seafood entrees, steakhouse entrees, and various Italian specialties too numerous to mention. My family and I visited Mountainhome Diner for lunch on a recent trip to the Poconos. It was actually are last morning on our trip and we were looking for a place to grab lunch before making the drive back to Connecticut. We had driven past the diner several times on previous visits to the area, but had never visited before. We decided to give them a try. It seemed like a classic American diner that you could find just about anywhere. There's no website, no social media accounts, just good old-fashioned diner staples. The staff were friendly and accommodating and they seated us at a booth. A go-to dish that my wife and I both like to get at classic diners is a Greek salad, and Mountainhome Diner's "Big Fat Greek Salad" (chopped iceberg lettuce, crumbled feta, olives, tomato, onions, peppers, grape leaves, house Greek vinegar) sounded like it was just what we were looking for. I ordered mine with gyro while my wife ordered hers with chicken. Those salads really hit the spot! For our sons, we looked to the Kids Menu. Our older son had the "Hot Dog with French fries" while our younger son had the "Chicken Fingers with French fries". They were both very happy with their dishes. We had a nice time at Mountainhome Diner and we're happy that we finally stopped in. We recommend them to anyone visiting the area!

So when I used to work in L'ville and could get Route 1 Diner delivered through Uber Eats it was a treat indeed. I often ordered the turkey Reuben, omelettes, BLTs, fish sandos, and quesadillas. All good but the actual standout here is the STEAK FRIES! They are fluffy on the inside and crisp on the outside. They're the best steak fries by far and possibly a top 3 restaurant fry of all time for me. Even by delivery they arrive crisp. I've since left that job near the diner but when I find myself in the area I can't help but stop in to get the fries. I was actually hesitant to do so at first - kinda like lifting the curtain back on Oz. But there's no trickery here - the waitstaff is friendly in person, the food is hot and fresh, and incredibly priced. This diner is such a gem and I am admittedly jealous of people who live nearby. Def stop in - well worth the trip. Enjoy my pics!

I just ordered a short stack and side of bacon and somehow they took over 30 minutes despite things being quiet. (It was at around 10pm.) Inside, the food was fresh, plentiful, and delicious. We chose side salads instead of fries and they were a great size to start the meal. I had the open‑face Turkey Reuben and the portion was definitely shareable and very good. My husband had the fish and chips and the cod was fried perfectly, 4 nice fillets, crisp outside and tender inside. He swapped the fries for a baked potato and it tasted like it came straight from the oven, hot and fluffy. They offered a long list of specials for 16.99 that included beverage, soup, salad, an entrée and dessert. The cakes and pies looked fabulous and many were ordering dessert. We were too full this time, but next visit we'll save room. Our waitress, Lala, was wonderfu, attentive, friendly and always checking in at the right moments. The manager greeted us warmly when we arrived and again when we left, which added to the friendly atmosphere. Plenty of parking and easy to get in and out.
