Oh boy did I ever go to Orlando Live Poultry. This place is definitely something you don't forget. I came here the Saturday before Christmas because I had a live goose to slaughter. The farm I bought him from only sold them live so I had to pack the thing into the bed of my dad's truck and drive it over to the hotel to heaven for livestock.
We got there at around 11 o clock and the place was packed. There wasn't anywhere to park on property do my dad dropped myself and the goose off at the front and he went to look for a place to park down the street. I stand there for a moment looking at the building in front of me. It's definitely not a 4 star hotel. Then I look down at its next guest to check in. This giant white goose with watery blue eyes, sitting in a crate, sulking. I'm pretty sure he knew what was coming. I pick it up and start to head inside. As I walk in a few ladies of different cultural backgrounds smiled at me with curiosity. They looked as though they wanted to say "are you lost, desire? Publix is right down the road you know." But I'm not sure they spoke English. To them this probably was publix.
I get inside and I see a window with men grounded around it. I peek inside too and there is an assembly line of sorts with a table saw and two men in coats cutting chickens into sections. I take that in for a moment then I put my goose down in the corner. A couple of people ask me if it was my pet, jokingly. I start to look for some kind of desk or register. I finally found a line to a small window, but it went around the corner to another window apparently. So I go through the door and see cage upon cage of every bird you can think of. And a line to a window where people seem to be paying. So I get in line and the guy in front of me asks "what's a nice girl like you doing in a place like this?" And I replied "I have a goose to kill". "Fair enough" he said, and turned back around.
On a dry erase board by the window there was a list of all kinds of animals from chickens to rabbits to sheep, and prices next to them. But I still didn't know how much it would cost to have the deed done. I get to the window and I tell the man I have a live goose and want it processed. He comes to take a look and another man drags the cage into the big room with all the other birds. Then he takes it out and off the goose went. Never to be seen again. He asked me if I wanted it whole and I said yes but I don't want guts or a head or anything. He said okay and told me it was $5. I paid him and he gave me a receipt with a number on it and told me to come back at 4. I was shocked to hear it would be over 4 hours until it was done but then I remembered how busy they were. But before we left my dad just had to show me something. We go to the other side of the building, and in an empty room there is nothing but blood on the floor, that and a goat's head. Just the head. I just rolled my eyes at my dad's big stupid grin. He may be outdoorsy but right now he was outdoorsy and 5 years old.
My dad picked up the goose because I had to go to work and when I got home there was indeed a goose in the fridge but it still had the head and the feet and everything else! So I got to deal with that in my own special way, which I will be posting a video on in case this happens to you. So overall it was an interesting experience going here but would I come back again? I guess we'll find out next Christmas. read more
