    Bill, my excellent tour guide!

The Orlando Fire Museum is one of Orlando's best kept secrets...until now!!! This is a "must see" FREE fire station history museum right behind the Lowndes Shakespeare Center in Lock Haven Park. The museum backs-up to the Shakespeare's courtyard and is worth the trip to come visit. It is staffed by volunteers who were local firefighters (now retired). They know all the history of the station, trucks, chiefs, etc. Absolutely Fascinating! They had artifacts from the early 1900's that I've never seen before. Amazing! I love this hidden gem and will be visiting soon again! Thanks Bill for the wonderful tour and all the history!!! Love y'all! One of them happened to be the mess fest that was going on this past weekend. So we decided to head out to Orlando and let me tell you it was so much fun!! They transformed one of their rooms into a fun place for the kids to get messy. You were catapulting scrunchie balls covered in paint onto a canvas sheet. There was another area where they were doing little bottle rockets with paint and Alka-Seltzer. That my kids absolutely LOVED. They also had scribble bots, a raffle painting for canvas paintings but that's not all because they had other stuff going on different floors. We got to make our own slime and we even got to go outside and watch them use liquid nitrogen to cause a bubbly explosion that the kids got to play afterwards. This was a 10 out of 10 experience.

Lots for kids to do--hands-on exhibits, crafts, and presentations across four floors. A bit crowded even on a Monday, but still easy to navigate. Bonus: the first-floor restaurant was surprisingly good--$6.99 bowl was totally worth it!

They are committed to the integrity of their IPs, and are just fine with making things genuinely spooky (see Darkmoor in Epic at night.) There are some hidden spells and tricks in Knockturn Alley that are so delightful. For example, after you do Alohamora on the door spell, try twisting the door knob as if you are entering. Doing a spell into the sky??! And the atmosphere reacting? So cool. But my favorite part of Knockturn Alley is a wand quest that ends here with a patronus spell. I believe it is the Dark Arts quest and you absolutely must do it next time you are visiting!

It was part of my Go City Explorer pass, which is a good deal if you want to hit up multiple random attractions and don't have a good idea of what to do. It's also slightly cheaper on Groupon if you're not from the area and want to buy individually. Parking is free in Icon Park's garage floors 4-7. It's an easy walk to the elevators to go down with a bunch of other tourists to walk through the park to near the center, where the Museum of Illusions is located. Along the way, you can get a nice photo op with the ferris wheel in the background. Once you walk in, you present your entry at the counter, and can begin walking through the exhibits on the left (the right side behind the counter is where you'll be exiting, beyond the few racks of merchandise). The walkthrough is pretty short - most of the wait is basically waiting on other people to clear out so you can take your own photos. We did everything in 45 minutes. There's not too much text to read, but sufficient enough for a basic understanding of how the illusions work. There are supposed to be a couple of guides waiting around to assist with photo-taking, but they were concentrated in one area, so for the most part it felt like we had to help ourselves. My favorite exhibits were the head on a platter, Ames room, and cloning table. Everything is still obviously a trick if you take another look at the photos. The reversed room could have been neat, but it doesn't account for gravity pull on fabric, so it only works if you have a shaved head and are wearing skin-tight clothes. The vortex tunnel is not too impressive - just more of an in-person dizzy balancing experience. The infinity room is pretty neat, though awkward when you're behind the camera. The entire experience would be a lot better if there were sensors that took photos for you, since taking the photo yourself negates some of the "magic" in the pictures. I also think they need better instructions for some rooms, since it sometimes took a few minutes to figure out what I should be looking at or doing. For a one-time experience, it's alright.

They host various exhibits at different times of the year to keep things fresh. I was there for Origami in the Garden, which ran from February to September last year, and they had 13 different origami sculptures scattered around the gardens. We got lucky for parking, which seemed plenty, but the gardens was host to several private celebratory events. The people at the welcome center were very friendly and informative, letting me know where to go and giving me useful guides. There's also a small cafe and marketplace before you make your way to the gardens. Overall, the grounds has a fair ratio of both shaded and unshaded areas with different plant species organized in some manner that goes beyond my understanding. You MUST make sure you are well protected by the UV, as it bears down. You should consider thirst quenchers, too. It wasn't too crowded, and there's plenty of semi-secluded spots for a peaceful picnic. I loved that the origami exhibits allowed us to have goals along the grounds. If I go here again, I'd be interested in touring the historic Leu house. The "secret garden" was not really anything except a bunch of foliage, in my opinion, so it was kind of a waste of time trying to find it. The map is very helpful, and the paths are distinguished enough to not get lost. It looks like they had several beautiful options for wedding venues. The Leu Gardens is a great place to pair with some downtown Orlando or Winter Park exploration.

We have free passes with our Legoland annual pass, so we checked out this place, the Orlando, Eye, and Madame Tussaud's. There was a lot of things to read, I made my older son practice reading by reading a lot of the plaques. There was also some fun interactive screens. And the highlight was a mermaid that was swimming around in the tank that came up to wave at everyone. It must be somewhat common place because we saw the mermaid a couple of times and only in one area where people rushing up to get pictures. The aquarium is broken out into sections, they had quite a few different species. My son also liked the touch tank. Overall, it took us about 45 minutes to get through so it's not a full day thing. If you read more, you could maybe make it last a couple hours, but for young children, I would say about an hour. Parking at icon park is easy. There's a free parking garage that has free parking on the upper levels and pay to park on the lower levels. When we came at about 5 PM on a Saturday there were tons of spots.
