After I saw an oculoplastic surgeon who performed several unsuccessful surgeries to treat my lagophthalmos, I decided to find someone who would approach my condition with a different strategy. I extensively researched oculoplastic surgeons practicing in the Maryland, DC, and Virginia area. My research led me to Dr. Zatezalo. From my first consultation with Dr. Zatezalo, I knew he was the surgeon for me. He is kind, smart, and compassionate along with experienced, talented, and creative in surgical procedures. He clearly explained to me that I needed full thickness skin grafts (FTSG) to functionally improve the operation of my eyelids. I had read about eyelid skin grafts from various Internet websites that described it as a last resort because of its complexity and routinely poor cosmetic outcome. Recovery may take up to a year or more before the grafts blend into the rest of your face and even then, they are usually a different texture and slightly off color. Dr. Z exerted no pressure on me to have the procedure. Deep down inside I knew I needed it. I had to do something as I could not go on living the way I was, and yet, I was afraid of what I would look like after a FTSG on my lower eyelids. I was using eyedrops nonstop during the day, and at night I would awaken every few hours in pain from the dryness and had to instill dry eye ointment. I wore sunglasses indoors because my eyes barely tolerated room lights or being out in the sunlight. I was miserable and my quality of life had gotten so poor, I did not want to leave my home. Dr. Zatezalo was very patient with me and again very honest. I had read many of his patient reviews of how he gave back his patients' lives through corrective surgery. I decided to move forward with full thickness skin grafts as Dr. Zatezalo recommended. In my case, it took approximately six months before the grafts started to blend in well with the surrounding skin and not be noticeable. My level of comfort improved immediately after the surgery as I now had more skin in my lower eyelids to help my eyes close completely. I no longer needed to use eyedrops and ointment like before. I was also able to tolerate artificial and natural light without sunglasses. I had the FTSG surgery in 2018. Today, people don't know I had it unless I point it out to them. The Zatezalo Group is located in a beautiful and modern office with easy parking access. Amelia and Kimmy, Dr. Zatezalo's staff, are super friendly, efficient, and helpful. I highly recommend Dr. Zatezalo to anyone who needs functional repair or desires cosmetic enhancement of their eyes. Thanks to him, the quality of my life has improved greatly. He really is a remarkable doctor and person.

Pre-surgery, he spent a significant amount of time answering all my concerns/questions, listening carefully to my expectations - which was a natural looking result. He was confident he could achieve my wishes and the outcome was just as I imagined. His office is easy to work with and very responsive. Post-op care was also top notch. Would not hesitate to recommend him to others.

Obviously he is very good and has many years of experience. He did an Ultrasound and two biopsies to decide for the best procedure. He was very knowledgeable and explained everything with patience the entire time. It is hard to understand all these medical terms but he had patience and made me feel as comfortable as I could feel. The first biopsy was pretty painless and over fast. The second one needed more specimen for a special DNA test and was a bit more uncomfortable but still totally fine. After results came back 60% probability for cancer he suggested to get only half of the thyroid removed. He also gave me the option to remove the whole thing because a lot of people choose that for peace of mind. I chose to remove half. My procedure was done at the Massachusetts Ave Surgery Center On surgery day he came to talk to me before the procedure. Explaining what's going to happen. He is so calm and professional it makes you feel better. Surgery went great. I woke up sore to swallow but ok. The first 3 days of recovery were sore and than pretty good after that. So I'd recommend to take 3-4 days off of work. The incision is healing up nice after a week and a half. It looks like the incision is going to be pretty nice and clean. I got stitches from this inside so no stitches scars to come. Yay Thank you Dr.Goicochea for taking care of me. I will recommend him to anyone that has to deal with Thyroid issues

After results came back, we scheduled surgery within 2 weeks and I was TERRIFIED however many of the nurses at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital let me know they have never seen incisions as clean and virtually unnoticeable as his. The surgery went very well, lasted about 3 hours (I was slightly a special case) I barely had a sore throat and resumed normal life the day after. His bedside manner is awesome and he definitely put me at ease as this was my first surgery. He has also worked on close family friends of mine and they all say the same of Dr. Goicochea! Highly trained, knowledgeable and professional.

AWFUL AWFUL from a medical and customer service perspective…read more We showed up at 6AM and checked in with a very nice front desk staff. Then it all fell apart. At 6 30 the front desk lady checked to see if the nurse staff had forgotten the patients in the lobby. At 6 45 a nurse came out and cited she was "still" celebrating her bday. Then she sat the patient there for another 45 min before getting an IV hooked up. So at this point, it is nearly 2 hrs behind and it takes 15-30 min to spin the plasma for this procedure so after the "I-dont-give-a-s#%t" attitude, she delayed things more by starting an IV instead of taking blood to be spun first. She could have started the blood spinning and then hooked up the IV to avoid delaying things further. We were the first folks so I am sure the afternoon patients were delayed by 2-3 hours each From a medical perspective things were just as bad. The nurse tried the needle in one arm then took it out and put it in the other arm (While the chance of infection is low, it is not allowed medically). Then a diff nurse did not use gloves. And worst of they accidentally gave 100 mg of antibiotic instead of 1000 and by some miracle the dr realized this in the afternoon and had to call and apologize and give an oral prescription.

But what sent it to 5 stars was the fact that 4 days after my surgery (when I notified both my surgeon AND Picard Surgical Ctr that I had developed a rash) Picard Surgical CALLED ME BACK It was 4:00 pm on EASTER WEEKEND! Yes, and it was Paula Picard who called me. She wanted a photo if I could get one, and after we hung up, she called my surgeon, and informed him of the rash. Then my surgeon called me, told me exactly what to do. And then, once I did all of what my surgeon told me, I saw that my phone had a VM from Picard Surgical. Quickly I called them back, and it was Paula again. She wanted to make sure that my surgeon had spoken with me, and if the rash was still there. THIS KIND OF PERSONAL SERVICE is hard to come by. THANK YOU Picard Surgical Center (Rockville MD) for going above and beyond to make sure I heal properly! you have exemplary patient care!

But since I never heard back from them, I am sharing it below. ********************************************** I hesitated to write this, hoping that I would get a survey from the practice itself and could keep this "in-house" so to speak. However, the fact that I am still upset more than a month after my appointment has me writing this review. I had a LAP Band put in 12 years ago by Dr. Barry Greene. I had no problems with it, and I felt good about the practice. Recently I have been having some gastric issues and my primary care physician (PCP) ordered a CAT Scan of my GI tract among other things. My PCP thought that the band had slipped and asked me to make an appointment for a follow-up with Dr. Greene. My appointment was in late September. That day I had a fluoroscope (a procedure where you drink some barium while having a scan while swallowing) which was read by Dr. Joseph Greene. He showed me some "rough edges" on my esophagus. I asked him what this could mean, and he replied that I needed to come back to talk to Dr. Barry as this could be an issue and that he (Barry,) as the LAP band expert, needed to be the one to talk to me. The earliest appointment was for late October. So far no complaints except for the long wait and lack of immediate information. I now had a month to wait and think about all of the terrible things those "rough edges" could mean and by the time of my appointment I was about as nervous as one could be when one knows in the back of their mind that if something were truly wrong I would have been rushed to the front of the queue. At least that was how I comforted myself when I was most scared. The day of the appointment with Dr. Barry arrived. I was taken into the back by an assistant and asked the questions I expected to be asked, about medications, medical history, etc. Then I was asked, "So why are you here today?" I looked at the assistant with incredulity and answered "I don't know. I was told I needed to come back to see Dr. Barry, so you tell me." She excused herself without addressing my answer. Barry then came in. He glanced at my chart and at the fluoroscope photo and pronounced that the band was perfectly situated. He then asked me a few questions, after which he said that the band was working perfectly. He explained why the band was working perfectly. He then started to talk about other surgery options, at which point I stopped him, pointed to the photo and asked "Well what about this? The jagged edges of my esophagus? He answered "Oh, that's nothing. It's just the contractions from swallowing." He then returned to his spiel about a Gastric Sleeve. Nothing acknowledging the fact that I had been worried for over a month about these jagged edges. Nothing to reassure me that yes, I was correct in thinking that they would have scheduled me for an earlier appointment if something were really wrong. Instead, I was left with the definite impression that no one had opened my chart, much less looked at it, since my last appointment, meaning that if something really were wrong, they wouldn't know... or care. I left feeling the following: 1. That the questions about my current band and the pronouncement that it was "working perfectly" was simply a "cover your ass" move. 2. That this second appointment was for no purpose other than to sell me more surgery. 3. That I was the victim of a medical "bait and switch." This review is not to question the competence of this practice and the providers therein. They are excellent surgeons, but the lack of empathy was astounding. As I said in the beginning of the missive, I am still upset.
