Man, such a disappointment this morning. The service was friendly, and the place looked pretty clean. But being the first one in the door and ordering immediately. Just some pancakes and eggs and bacon. 20 min later and nothing yet, Waitress saw me looking so asked the line cook what was what, and 10 min later I finally get my food. Which normally isn't an issue but the people who were getting sat after us had gotten their food before us. We came in on a Sunday morning around 10:30 AM and it was very very busy, with a line out the door. We were totally happy to wait so we stayed in the line and it moved quickly! The staff were all extremely friendly and helpful, and the service was so fast even though it was so busy! We tried the Dutch baby treat and they sent out two, because they felt as though one of them may have been a bit burnt. I thought that was so nice of them! Especially considering that we didn't think it was too burnt by any means- they were both DELICIOUS! 10/10. I forgot to take pics but we also each got a Belgian waffle. He also got home fries, bacon and sausage which were all really good. It was also decorated with fun Halloween decor for the season! I'm not sure why I've never reviewed The Original Pancake House. I consider this one of my top choices for breakfast in the Metro Detroit area, and we hit this place often. Everything on the menu is delicious, but the buckwheat pancakes, the Dutch Baby Treats, and the potato pancakes are my favorites. In the fall, their pumpkin pancakes are to die for. The bacon is excellent as is their turkey sausage. They offer fresh-squeezed orange juice, and it is SO good. The Original Pancake House STILL has 'Breakfast worth the wait!' This presidential Election Day had patrons lined up out the door to be seated for breakfast this afternoon. However, the wait was not long. Mostly every seat was occupied with the exception of one closed section that was due to being short staffed. FYI: They are hiring for ALL positions. Many of the diners strolled to the polls to cast their votes and then strolled over to The Original Pancake House for breakfast. They serve breakfast daily from 7am - 4pm. It was wonderful to see so many patrons that were wearing 'I voted stickers' and political gear even down to some of the children diners. The food was great! I had the Corned Beef Omelette for the first time, which is a baked with three farm fresh, extra large, white, grade AA eggs and your choice of cheese. This was served with three buttermilk pancakes topped with 93 score butter that they use exclusively. I will admit I'm not real familiar with butter scoring but I know the entire meal was delicious! I love the full calorie disclosure. This meal was 1,080 calories. My cousin had a Belgian waffle with cheese eggs, sausage and their fresh squeezed orange juice. They get two thumbs up from him! We are in town visiting from PA and were excited to see this restaurant was close to our hotel. We've been to the Original Pancake House in AZ and CA before and loved the food. This location did not disappoint! The food was delicious, hot, and fresh. The hubs ordered pancakes and was delighted to see that they weren't the tiny pancakes served up on bread plates he's had at other places. These pancakes were light, fluffy, and tasty. I ordered the Dutch Baby Jr. and it was so good. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Our server, Tia, was on top of her game. An epic breakfast experience, I love taking friends and family here from out of town. Obviously the Specialty pancakes are the best thing to have, but the eggs and bacon are also really great. We normally split one or two of the pancake dishes because they are so tasty but also so huge. The service is always excellent here, just be sure to plan ahead on weekends because it gets really crowded. There is plenty of seating for large groups at the tables in the .middle, but you may have to wait awhile. There was a time in my life when my childhood friends and I would take trips to get breakfast on random Saturday mornings. Funny enough we would drive to places that were 15-20 minutes out simply because we didn't find the closer options to be attractive to us. One of the restaurants we frequented was this OPH in Southfield. I always found the decor to be quite inviting, making me feel like I was visiting a country lodge on a vacation somewhere. This place is always busy, with lines out the door being a common site. Thankfully there is plenty of seating space, so it didn't take forever to eventually get a table. I have never had anything from the menu I didn't like, and if you're someone like me who avoids pork they have turkey sausage as a substitute. I will admit that my experiences over the years haven't always been consistent, but on this particular day all the stars aligned. My good friend and I came here right before it got busy, we had a very attentive waitress, our food was perfectly cooked and delicious (the pancakes and home made syrup are out of this world) and the coffee really hit the spot. They have 2 other locations in Birmingham and Gross Pointe Woods, neither of which are close to where I live. That's okay, because driving here on those rare occasions when I can actually make it out adds a little something special to the experience. The prices are really good too! The decor is dated but cozy and quaint. I think the dates look is intentional and is part of their vibe. Sort of like a Cracker Barrel type of atmosphere. The service is great and decently quick for how busy it is! Our server this time was super sweet and kept the coffee coming. Now, this isn't Butterfield in Scottsdale, AZ, but I remember growing up here in Michigan and visiting this place over 30 years ago, and the food is still consistent. My server Tori was great, very attentive to details, and was able to manage about 8 tables at once and made sure that everyone one felt welcome at any giving time. As Ms. Tori dealt with a difficult customer. She kept her poise about the situation as the patron was rude and disrespectful about his order and informed her it was a reflection of her and she still provided excellent service to him. However, my mother's order for crepes - which take much less time to cook than my order - ultimately arrived 45+ minutes later, and only after several requests we made to wait staff to check on her order-- only to be told that our server had either not given the kitchen my mother's order or my mother's order was lost? By the time I had finished my food , and after I had consumed 2 cups of hot chocolate, my mother had not even received her order yet. However, almost 1 hour after ordering, my mother finally received her order, and she reported that the crepes were flavorful and well cooked. The manager comp'd my mother's order and apologized, which at least demonstrated some effort on their part to rectify the terrible , slow service that my mother received. The quality of the service may have been impacted by how busy this place was on a non-holiday Sunday morning around 10 am. However, given how good the food tasted -- once it arrived -- I would give this place another chance, but only on a less busy weekday. Ambience at this establishment can be very noisy and raucous on holidays and weekends, too, based on this and previous experiences I have had at this restaurant... so I would recommend returning to this restaurant only on a non-busy , non-holiday weekday. read more

I was with a group on friends on a shopping trip to the Farmington Hills area and our original plan was to eat in Farmington Hills. Well low and behold - all the restaurants we had in mind were an hour wait. One of the guys suggested This Original House of Pancakes in the Southfield area so we were on our way. We walked in and there was no wait (about 1:30 on a Saturday) and we got waited on pretty quickly - they put together a booth with a small table so that the 6 of us could sit together. Once we ordered - that is when the wait began! Luckily for us - we were enjoying talking so it didn't bother us as much as it might have if there were just a couple of us that were starving!! Once the food came it was delicious. Everyone enjoyed their meal and they were presented well. I only got a picture of mine and one other person - but they were all great looking. One woman got chocolate chip pancakes and it had a ton of whipped cream on it. She loved it and ended up bringing some home. I got the Sante Fe Omelette made with egg whites and it came with pancakes. I was happy with the omelette - it looked like it was baked in the oven as it was puffed up. I was, however, disappointed with the pancakes. I mean - its the name of the restaurant for goodness sakes! I have had better pancakes from the freezer section at the grocery store. That was a huge disappointment as I never get pancakes and was really looking forward to it. We invited a couple companions and they absolutely RAVED about the coffee, the real butter, the warm Maple syrup, and of course, the always wonderful house specialties. OPH was our Sunday stop after a whirlwind weekend of high school state football championships. Arrived about 11 a.m. and waited twenty minutes in the car. Guessing they were short staffed (Covid is still a thing, folks), because we waited another 45 minutes after ordering for our food. Give grace and roll with the punches. But onto the food. I had pecan pancakes and a western omelet. The latter was quite good: perfectly melted cheddar cheese held the savory ingredients between a fluffy egg envelope. And the cheese stayed ooey and gooey from start to finish. Pancakes were solid. I had hoped for bigger and thicker/fluffier, but they were definitely fresh. OPH mixes the batter up fresh. And the butter was slathered on so generously it ought to qualify as its own side dish! I'd eat them again. I enjoyed their American fries, too (although we ordered ketchup that never arrived). Thick sliced and nicely fried to be both crispy and potatoey chewy. Sundays are slamming for any brekkie joint, and Covid makes it hard sometimes to keep up. Not a good experience, very disappointing, uncomfortably warm inside, no reason to ever return. No host/hostess up front for several minutes.When a man (waiter?) finally walked up, he just pointed at me, asking how many. No greeting, no welcoming smile. The waitress, Morgan, started off friendly, but as soon as we made a request, she stopped being friendly, and was inattentive for the rest of our meal. We asked for a creamer of actual cream for our coffee, not half & half, and Morgan had to go check as she said she didn't think they had that.When she came back, she told us "You can't have that. They only have enough for what they need back there."That has never happened to us in any Original Pancake House before, and we've eaten in them for over 30 years. We ordered our meals, and they came out reasonably fast. My poached egg was cooked perfectly, but the pancakes were very small, and that was unexpected. Morgan never came around to offer more coffee. I had to ask for more when she came to bring the bill - as we never saw her in between - and then had to ask her a second time as she still didn't brought any coffee, nor had any host/manager ever walked by us to offer coffee. So, for the entire time we sat there, we only got our cups refilled once. Our water glasses were not refilled either, even though Morgan refilled at a table near us. After we finally got the bills, and laid our credit cards out, it took a long time to get those picked up. When Morgan brought our bills back, she switched the cards, never said thank for coming in, or have a nice day, or anything. She silently laid the bills down and that was that.  Normally, at the other location, we leave a $20 tip if we are at the table for that long. We did not leave that amount this time, as not only was the restaurant not all that busy (empty tables around us the entire time), our waitress was not even minimally friendly enough to warrant a large tip. read more
