When in Amsterdam...... I stopped in here, because for my first time, I wanted to buy from someplace not so sketchy looking. I didn't even see whichever Oceans movie this place was featured in, but I figured, if it's good enough for Clooney, Pitt, and Damon, it's good enough for me! The architecture is beautiful art deco (one of my favorites) and the interior is very warm with nice woodwork everywhere; a very welcoming and calming space. I picked up a muffin and a slice of space cake to try back in my hotel room. While here, I had a milkshake, and it was pretty dang good. In my short 3 day trip to Amsterdam, we have came to Dampkring twice. The first trip was a personal struggle. Nothing against this coffee shop, but if your a tourist and want to try edibles for the first time.... Yikes, i literally spaced out with space cake. I really thought I was eating a cake with a little weed and that's about it... I didn't do any research and did not realize how strong the side effects are. Instead of spacing the cake out or eating half, I ate the whole thing within 2 minutes. At the time I actually didn't feel anything. The next morning I felt like I was floating/ light headed and basically had a weird buzz. I digress from my lame cake story... Second visit: They have a ton of variety of weed/hash/kush. Some are more expensive than others but if your a regular smoker, you know your paying for the grade/quality. The friend we went with, he knew exactly what to get and how to roll it. Second time we went we sat at the bar, and our interactions with the bartenders were great. They make fresh milkshakes/smoothies/juices. Sam M had chocolate milkshake and I tried the strawberry/banana smoothie. Both were excellent. All the employees make you feel at home and are so personable. I don't plan on trying any other coffee shop, this one is a winner for weed novices and smoke experts alike. Side Note: This is the same coffee shop, which had a scene in Oceans 12 movie. They have a cat which is 20 years old and sits in the bar area. So does that mean marijuana is good second hand smoke, since it's doing something for the cat's longevity. :) ~ read more

On our trip to Amsterdam in March of 2017, we were able to go to De Dampkring twice in 3 days. On our 2nd visit we were already being treated like regulars by the employees. We knew of this place from the Oceans movies and as Clooney, Pitt and Damon had been here of course we had to be at this coffee shop too. One of the famous things about this place amongst a lot of things is their cat Bowie. The cat is literally chilling with the customers. The employees are awesome and on our second visit, they were so happy to see us that they gave us a couple of drinks on the house. We ordered some good stuff with the drinks. It is one of the coolest places to hang out at and if you are in Amsterdam, you have a lot of coffee shops to chose from but my recommendation give this a try. You will be in the presence of the celebrity cat also known as the cat of cannabis. 5 stars all the way, hope to back in Amsterdam soon!!!!! read more

Really chill vibe and great ambiance for a coffeeshop. It really feels like they filmed scenes from a movie here or something... hmmmmm We stopped by Dampkring to try their space cake. We were surprised that their cake was packaged so nicely and had a commercial feel to it. While a bit pricier, we knew we wanted to chill out somewhere to have our cake and eat it too. Upon opening up the space cake, it was a rainbow ready to be devoured. Sadly the cake didn't do too much even for us being new to cannabis. During our vacation in Amsterdam, we could have visited any coffeeshop in the city, but decided to drop in on this one because 1) I read great reviews at how friendly and helpful the employees were and 2) it was sort of a hot spot because part of Ocean's 12 was filmed here. So we decided to go with a trusty recommendation from the public. Despite the great reviews of this coffeeshop, we really didn't know what to expect in the haze of smoke here ---- and yes there was a massive haze of smoke inside! We walked and immediately noticed how small and dark the coffeeshop was. The haze didn't help visibility at all. There was very limited seating inside as patrons either sat at the bar or at the few side tables. We managed to luckily score a seat at the bar. Prior to sitting though, we consulted with the marijuana 'bartenders' in the back and we weren't really interested in physically smoking pot, but just getting 'the feeling' via the baked foods. He informed us that we could order at the main bar, so we sat down and ordered ourselves the space cake slice and space muffin, which contained 1 gram of marijuana each and came out to about 14 Euros. Since we weren't experienced consumers of space cake or muffins, they informed us that we should consume 1/2 of the desserts now and consume the other 1/2 in 1 hour. Let's just say we cheated a bit and consumed the baked goods a bit quicker and well, the goods were legit! After about 2 hours after consuming the goods, it hit us good! Bottom line: This coffeeshop was really laid back and the employees were super friendly. By the way, just beware of the cat roaming around as it might be high too. I found this place online because I wanted to try a special cake, because I've never had one before. When we walked in, the first thing I noticed was the cat. The cat was on the bar, staring off into space, and smiling. Smiling! Yes, grinning ear-to-ear like the Cheshire Cat. Weird. They have a extensive selection of teas, and I asked the waitress for her recommendation. She suggested the Sencha cactus fig green tea. With cactus, fig, melon, papaya, pineapple and mango pieces, sunflower and cornflour, it was a naturally sweet green tea... but it didn't stop me from adding a packet of honey! So delicious, very refreshing, and smelled great! The Rooibos African orange tea was also awesome--a tasty mix of rooibos, honeybus, orange peel and orange flower. I love their presentation of loose-leaf tea in a little tray that you let steep in the hot water yourself. Served with a yummy little caramel biscuit and little packets of sugar and honey (which I loved sucking straight from the package), the teas were as beautiful as they were delicious. The special cake was absolutely scrumptious, too! At first, I was a bit miffed when it came in a sealed package. I thought it would have been baked fresh, but it looked like something that came from a factory. But when I opened it up and pulled it out, the marble cake was moist and fragrant with a fantastic chocolate and vanilla flavor. I like how the package had instructions on the back so we would know what to expect. It said not to mix with anything else (like smoking or drinking), and the effects wouldn't occur for about an hour. So I kept checking my watch after eating the cake, and lo and behold--right on cue--I started feeling something after about an hour. LOL. WARNING: I only ate half of the cake, and it hit me pretty hard. If I were to ever try this again, I would probably only eat 1/4 next time. It's kind of pricey though, so now that my curiosity's been satisfied, I dunno if I'll ever get this again. The interior decor is pleasant and cheery and probably had the best atmosphere of any coffeeshop I've ever been to. My favorite "coffeeshop" in Amsterdam. I walked over here after finding that space cake was sold out at three other shops I dropped into. While I was outside I heard a guide telling her flock, that this was the cafe from Ocean's 12 that they had the meeting with Matsui. Having just watched the movie on the plane I had to go and take a peek. Inside it looks just the same as it did in the movie. Against the left wall is a juice bar, and along the back an herb bar. The back right corner had thankfully a nice and clean bathroom. We didn't know where to order, so we queued up behind some people waiting in front of the herb bar. When we got to the front however we were told to order from the bar (food and drink). We weren't immediately seen to when we stood next to the bar. I think they get a lot of lookey-loos so I don't blame them. I raised my hand and someone immediately came over to take my order. She was very friendly and informative. We ordered our space cake and WOW it's a great cake. You have to remember that it's not just a snack and eat accordingly though! It comes backed with half a gram of good stuff. It wasn't too crowded though there aren't too many places to sit. There's constant traffic so someone along the bar should free up. read more

This place has gone way down hill. The tree is gone and now only pics of the owner with George clooney and Matt Damon hang up. The weed is decent but the atmosphere stinks now. I bought a joint from their bar and then was informed if i wanted to smoke it there that i had to buy a $3 coffee as well. I just bought weed and I can't even smoke it? The bar tender tells me they are a small shop but it was also an empty shop. So I told the bartender we would go somewhere else and he proceeds to try and lecture me how it's illegal for Americans to smoke outside coffee shops. Additionally they don't mark their mixed joints as mixed so I was even further upset to find tobacco in my joint. All other shops clearly mark their pure vs mixed joints. No more dampkring. The bartenders are sort of rude but they are straightforward. They know why you're there and that there's a good chance if you are asking about cakes you are a tourist. But they are nice enough to let you know how to be responsible. They ask each person how much they smoke, then informs them whether they'll need the whole cake or not. The rainbow cake itself is very pretty. They have vending machines that sell lighters and rolling papers, lighters, lollipops. There's a long and detailed menu that you can review while you queue up. Their actual coffeeshop items were also very good. The milkshakes especially. I also tried their coffee (good) and their hot chocolate (melted into a full glass of milk). I can't speak to much experience with Amsterdam's coffeeshops, as in my short trip I only visited three but I saw enough to confidently say this: Drapkring has a really fun, other worldly atmosphere, and good quality product. The staff, on the other hand, is hit or miss and if you get a miss, it really dampens your buzz. The first time I came, the woman behind the counter was really friendly and helpful-- gave us a couple of glasses of water because we were smoking quite a bit and waited for me to run to the ATM when I learned it was cash only. Great! I loved it, and thank you for making me want to come back here the next day! The person behind the counter tonight was a rude, wide-angle miss. The "coffee" here was really weird, but I loved it. It's served in an almost cigarette-like dispenser and people were puffing away on those little shot glasses of pre-grinded "coffee" like there was marijuana or something in them. I didn't try any, but from the look on everyone's faces it was some of the best "coffee" around. I got pretty thirsty after about a half hour of being around other people drinking "coffee" so I ordered a kiwi strawberry smoothie. It was one of the most flavorful I've ever had in my life. The people working at Dampkring were really friendly and that "coffee" menu is the most sophisticated you'll ever see. It breaks down the smell, taste, and buzz of the "coffee" unlike I've ever seen, and once "coffee" becomes legal in my country or state or county or whatever I'm definitely gonna come back to De Dampkring and try some of it. read more

I can tell you more about this place. They have rules about wear you can sit (ongezellig), the staff is awkward and probably irritated from tourists (ongezellig), you have to order a drink if you smoke (ongezellig). Unfortunately, I mainly go with friends who smoke so as a non-high person, I can tell you there are plenty of better coffee shops in Amsterdam and even in the area. That was De Dampkring. While I found the Ocean's Twelve memorabilia a bit out of place at the actual coffee shop, the service was warm, friendly, and helpful for those with questions. I didn't get the same vibe as one of the other Yelpers who commented on the aggressive security. This coffee shop is surprisingly small considering its popularity. They had an interesting selection of tea but I opted for the delicious hot Belgian chocolate when I went. It's looks great in Oceans 12, but it's almost perfection once you get inside. Gorgeous woodwork and a stunning decor. It's one of my favorite locations. It's a perfect stop after walking through the shopping streets. I've been coming since '99 and I always make sure I visit a least once per trip. De Dampkring has great atmosphere and surprisingly good snacks. I had a chocolate flavored cake here that was so buttery and rich that you couldn't even taste the product within. Also, the banana milkshake was airy and delicious. Overall, the only downsides are that the crowds and the prices. Because it's one of the more famous coffeehouses in Amsterdam, De Dampkring can get touristy at times (I went there as a tourist!). read more

Came to the original De Dampkring after multiple people recommended this as the best coffeeshop in town. This was the second coffeeshop we went to and I found that their joints were not only smaller than other places, they were 1/4 paper filter that made it difficult to get a hit. By the time I started to get anything, the joint was half gone which was disappointing. I ended up having to remove the filter entirely. However, I loved the smoothies and ambience here. Make sure you say hello and goodbye to the people working there. That's very important to them as it is pretty rude to start demanding things before greeting them. I sat at the bar and watched the bartenders scold some people too. Learning from other people's mistakes, I ensured to be extra friendly and was rewarded for it.
