I've been on a mission to find the best public beach in New York City that's easily accessible via the subway or bus. This brought me to Orchard Beach in the Bronx. I will say that it was beautiful, it didn't feel like I was the City or the Bronx for that matter. However, it's not super straightforward to get there. You ride the green line all the way to the end at Pelham Bay station and then transfer to a bus for an additional 20 minutes. You then walk around a bunch of construction to find the only open entrance to the beach. The beach itself has soft sand and was pretty clean, but the water is super shallow (great for kids). I had a hard time getting back since the busses run super infrequently.

I love the beach, and has lived in the Bronx for 2 decades but never set foot in Orchard Beach until yesterday And I'm pleasantly surprised. Lots of parking on the off season & it's free. Very peaceful & not a lot of people on a cold weekend morning. Only locals taking a walk with their dogs, family with little kids. We Felt very safe. I saw a few park workers doing clean up work. The beach & water looks cleAn & no garbage lying around. There are bathrooms available but didn't check them out, i saw they have food for sale too but close for the season. Perfect place if you just want to walk along the water & feel the salty breeze for an hour or two. Glad to discover this Riviera of the Bronx. I plan to come back in the spring when its warmer maybe for a picnic before it gets crazy for the summer season.

I have to rate this beach a 4 because is been apart of the community for so many years. I understand, different people have different opinions about this beach, but, that doesn't mean you have to take away the experience of another. Yesterday, which was when the picture was taken, we went to go watch a firework extravaganza show. Once you arrive the parking fee is $8. Try to remember where you parked as well because you can easily forget. They also have decent size restrooms ( if not overcrowded of course ). Orchard beach even has a concession stand with limited options ( i didnt get to try the food though) so if you have tried it let me know on the comments. Can't go wrong with all they have to offer, parks, sprinklers for the kids, tennis court, & if you go all the way to the left into the hiking trail you can see their beautiful scenery. The Dj was up on stage doing the damnn thing, had everyone dancing, laughing, & making great memories. The vibe was immaculate yesterday. Their was food trucks and different little vendors around to buy whatever you needed. Funniest thing though, the scam was real with the glow in the dark toys. Before the fireworks each item was $5 right!? why when we was leaving they started selling them for $5 for 2 i was like no wayyy!!! You can't make this up so yeah people sometimes is better to wait for the after math when everythin goes on sale. Afterwards, if you're crew is hungry ya can always head down to City Island which is only 5 mins away, Many different restaurant options to choose from. Seafood city personally is my favorite and they only accept cash, as well as, Tonys & Johnny's. Overall, the experiences have been amazing. If you are not looking for problems or don't have beef with people and looking for a close spot in the bronx to chill Orchard Beach is definitely a cool spot. They have it all for you. Hope you guys enjoy.

Looking north from the front and center of Orchard Beach. Not crowded on a Saturday afternoon in July.

I visited Orchard Beach with confused expectations because of the mixed reviews, but I really don't know what the negative ones were about. I had a lovely time. Even on a Saturday afternoon in July, it wasn't crowded; there were plenty of people enjoying it, but it was nothing like Jones Beach on a Sunday or Coney Island on Labor Day weekend. Parts of the beach were even empty. The vibe was very chill, with lots of families. No line at the snack bar. The sand and water really weren't dirty. I won't claim it was pristine, because I saw some litter here and there and some cigarette butts, but I was expecting so much worse from the reviews! The bathrooms were fine, not crowded at all, mostly clean, exactly what I'd expect from a city park bathroom. $2.75 for a subway-and-bus trip from Manhattan. Would definitely come back!

Not crowded in the edges left and right of the beach. People were chilling and I liked how peaceful it was. I took an uber here from Queens and it was about 26 mins. Water had a few garbage and wasn't insanely clean but that's every beach I went to in NYC. It was still clean for the most part. Had a good time. The park workers don't allow you to go deep into the waters. This a first for me as other beaches they didn't care. After 5 pm apparently you can't go in water anymore so go earlier.

If you are uptown or in Da Bronx it is easy to get to. On Sundays near the parking lot there is salsa music and dancing. There are also three tennis courts in good condition, as well as handball and basketball courts. There are concession stands as well as empanadas being sold on the beach. If you want quiet and relaxation field one is supposed to be a quiet zone but I wouldn't swear to that. It is a lively beach with clean bathrooms, free sunscreen and lifeguards on duty until 6pm. Pretend the water is aqua blue. It is a cool spot to chill by the water. Parking is $8-$10 per car.

What a beautiful getaway, this beach is super clean...so this is in the Bronx out by city island!!! You have to pay a $10.00 parking fee for the whole day .My husband and I got here at about 11:00am and the beach was already getting pack .People were just loving and living life today!!! There was also a festival going for Puerto Ricans day not to mention there are basketball courts, little park so if u don't do sand there also other options at orchard beach There where trash cans every where and the staff change the cans regularly so there's no trash over flowing do need a upgrade with the food at the snack bar staff is nice there are literally teenagers just making a living and doing an amazing job but the food is trash!!! Overall get day getaway would recommend going early

This beach is nice. Tonssss of parking and the beach and boardwalk is huge! There are some nice picnic spots and nature trails and I just discovered a new section today that was absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately the beach and parking lot usually have trash everywhere and the staff and volunteers try their best to keep it clean but it can be very overwhelming. It's such a shame because it really is beautiful there. Hopefully with time the city can come up with a plan to make restore it back to its glory.

As promised y'all I am back at the beach. Not bad really not a bad experience at all. My fur never got dirty, and I was really pleased with the quality of the water. It wasn't terrible. Y'all should check it out, and if you see a big cat on the sand don't throw anything at me.

See all

Ask the Community - Orchard Beach

When is parking fee expired after summer season?

Thta should be about when all the punkic pools close, which is after Labor Day.

Can I swim nude?

Probably not. It's a public beach with children and police so you might get in trouble for doing that. People sun bathe but they're usually descreet about it.

How do we get here in bus?

You can catch the bus from the last 6 train stop at Pelham Bay Park.

Can we actually go into this water?

Yes you can get in the water, that by the way, it's very cold! So, on a hot summer's day, enjoy! 😎👙⛱

Can you get on orchard beach before 8 - 9 am?

Hours are 7 am to 7 pm, but lifeguards are only on duty from 10-6 during the summer.

The boardwalk is not very commercial - in fact, there's only one true eatery on the boardwalk offering Cuban food.

If you are looking for a place that combines elegance with a serene natural environment, this is it. The Aesthetic-- One of the first things you'll notice is the incredible aesthetic. The park's beauty is strikingly similar to the upscale waterfront vibes of Westport and Southport, Connecticut. Waterfront Wonder-- Being right on the water provides a constant, cooling breeze and stunning views of the water, boats, and yachts. Architecture & Nature-- To your right, you get the expansive water views, while to your left, you are flanked by incredible historic mansions. Looking at these beautiful homes while walking through the park adds a unique, high-end feel to the experience. The Boathouse-- Passing the boathouse is a total mood! You really feel that signature nautical energy here. Plus, the boat-watching is top-tier--expect to see some incredible yachts as you stroll by. Seasonal Splendor-- Visiting in the spring and summer is a must! The park is impeccably clean, and the lush greenery against the blue water makes it feel like a private coastal estate. It's incredibly relaxing and provides that getaway feel without leaving the state or having to drive for hours on end. The Park's Security & Strict Standards-- While the park is stunning, it is privately owned and maintained by the Larchmont Manor Park Society, which enforces strict standards for conduct. The grounds are actively patrolled by security to preserve the area for "passive use." We saw this firsthand when a family was asked to pack up their picnic and leave immediately. Because regulations are firmly enforced, it is best to visit for quiet walks and reflection rather than social gatherings or meals, etc. The Rules of the Park-- To ensure you have a smooth visit, keep in mind that the rules are strictly enforced by the patrolling security. * No Picnicking: No food, beverages, coolers, or blankets are allowed on the grass. * No Chairs or Mats: You cannot bring your own seating or padded mats; use the provided benches instead. * No Group Gatherings: Large parties or organized events are prohibited without a permit. * No Sports or Bicycles: Ball playing, Frisbees, biking, skating, and scooters are not permitted. * Leashed Pets Only: Dogs are welcome but must remain on a leash at all times, and you must pick up after them. * Photography Limits: Professional or commercial photography requires a permit and is usually restricted to local residents. * Appropriate Attire: Visitors must wear shirts and shoes; sunbathing in swimwear is only permitted in the specific beach area (which has its own residency requirements). Final Verdict-- Larchmont Manor Park and beach is a 10/10 experience. It offers a level of cleanliness and "Connecticut Coastline" beauty that is hard to find elsewhere near New York City. We had such a great time exploring the winding paths and taking in the views! It's the perfect spot to reset and enjoy the coastline. It's a literal hidden gem for anyone who appreciates a quiet, high-end coastal vibe! Key Takeaways for Your Visit-- * Non-Resident Access to the Beach & Park: While the beach and park share the same coastline, access depends on residency. If you are a non-resident, you'll use a designated section of the beach separated by a fence. To reach the park from there, simply take the path to the right and follow the shoreline past the resident side. It's a short, manageable walk that allows you to enjoy the best of both worlds. * Passive Use Only: Activities like picnicking, loud music, or organized sports are generally prohibited. * Active Enforcement: Expect security to be visible and proactive in enforcing park and beach rules. * Leave No Trace: The Larchmont community maintains a pristine environment. To preserve this, it is essential that all visitors--residents and non-residents alike--leave the space exactly as they found it.

Now as an almost middle aged adult in an attempt to weather through almost triple digit weather, Astoria Pool hasn't lost its charm. As good as the trip was, it isn't perfect. Since it was a hot day there was a rather long queue that I had to wait through, which fortunately wasn't as long as I thought it would be. There are a couple of rules and regulations which do make enough sense to follow. No electronics in the pool area, you must have a lock for your locker and shower before and after being in the pool, a towel is recommended. The one drawback would be the locker rooms. I dunno how the women's one looks like since I'm a man but the men's locker leaves a lot to be desired. I know it's a public use facility but it could be more taken care of so it would look less like a Gulag from Call of Duty: Warzone, plus the lockers are pretty small, I was amazed to fit all of my stuff in there. Other than that, it's a nice way to kill some time on a hot day. Be mindful of their schedule though because an hour break is utilized from 3 to 4 PM.

The locker room is huge and has plenty of lockers, showers and dressing stalls to change into. The pool is Olympic size and gargantuan with an amazing view of the bridge. Areas designated for food consumption as they do have a food stand that sells burgers, hot dogs etc. all at reasonable prices from $6-$14. A playground right next door with sprinklers and jungle gym.
