    Astoria pool.

They spent $19 million dollars and 2 years to renovate this, the city's largest pool, but they forgot to renovate the locker rooms and forgot to hire enough lifeguards. This means people have to wait 1-2 hours in line to get in. Once inside you are squeezed into only a small portion of the pool while the rest is left empty because there aren't enough lifeguards. Swim lap hours are very marginal, meaning 11:00am-1:30pm and 4-5pm. This is only if you can endure the long 1-2 hour wait to get in. Congrats city of NY you've managed to build a $19 million dollar urinal.

The first thought I had was: "This pool is massive!". Measuring 330' (100m) x 165' (50m) and designed by John M. Hatton, this is in fact the largest of the eleven pools in New York City that were completed by the Works Progress Administration in 1936, and can accommodate 5,570 bathers at a time [1]. It is basically four Olympic-sized pools side-by-side, and it in fact hosted the trials for the summer Olympics in 1936, 1952, and 1964. It is totally free; you don't need a NYC Parks & Recreation membership to enjoy this pool. What you need is a bathing suit and a lock; the guards are very strict about this, and will check all bags. Once inside, the changing area is massive. The bathrooms and communal showers are probably the original ones from 1936, but in the end how much time are you going to spend in these showers. The pool is divided in several areas specifically dedicated to lap swimming, bathing, and shallow pool for small kids. There is plenty of room on the bleachers for your towels, and you may even be able to score one of the chaise lounge chairs by the now-covered diving pool. If you want to do lap swimming, keep in mind a few things: - There aren't specific lanes: it's free-for-all, and you only use the markings at the bottom of the pool as marking. - This means that you have to swim always facing forward in order to avoid collisions. - Similarly, you should also check if anyone is swimming towards you before you start the next lap (i.e. for your own safety you may have to avoid flip turns) - About half of the people in the lap swimming area are slow and swim breast strokes only. - Occasionally you may have a guy who stops swimming and starts walking, or people who do not realize this area is for lap swimming only. The lifeguards try to keep people swimming continuously, but there will be disruptions. - Because of what I mentioned above, it is difficult to get into any kind of rhythm; however, since the pool is much larger than your average 25'/25m pool, you get a lot of bang for your lap. Also, much less busy than other public pools I've been to for lap swimming. - Best time for lap swimming may be at around 12 noon, 1h after the pool opened (it's busier right when it opens). Food is not allowed, but there is a food stand on the west side of the pool. The few times I have been here the pool was never busy. This is true also for Astoria Park: Perhaps because it is pretty far from the subway, and the area is very residential, it is frequented mostly by locals who live nearby. If you have a car, however, this place is fantastic. --------------------- [1] https://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/astoria-park/facilities/outdoor-pools/astoria-pool

Great swimming pool in beautiful view of Astoria, love it! Have to go swimming in Summer!

A FREE community pool who can really ask for more? This is the perfect way to cool down during the summer but be aware of the hours and the 3:00 -4:00 pm gap and bring a lock. There is also a line to get in which is something I didn't see in the reviews. If you don't have a lock get one by the deli on ditmars or purchase one for 10$. No electronics on deck and be prepared to shower! (Which is a good thing because that means everyone has to. ) I can see how some people might be frustrated with the regulations but if you come with a lock you are golden. It makes sense anyways to want to lock your stuff just so you could enjoy the pool and there is plenty of room to change and shower. In nyc there are still ways to enjoy the summer without blasting the air conditioning. If you don't want to spend a day road tripping there is this and Rockaway beach. In manhattan public pools are minimum $40 for the day. Sure there aren't as many random people but this is for free. I have to say for a free pool I was happy with the cleanliness and there is plenty of room, even lap lanes. There aren't many chairs but plenty of places to put a towel down. I was reluctant to go but after my AC broke I needed an escape from the heat! I can easily see myself coming back, basically if you are okay with the cleanliness of a water park then you are okay with this pool. Yet another cool perk of living in Astoria and going to the the park.

The pool is big. Staff is friendly, well most of them. Make sure you bring your lock. You can't get in without it.

Only way to spend the 4th!

Reading some of these reviews I have not been in the past two years I have lived in nyc. Today was hot and I decided to give it a try. I was pleasantly surprised. I came prepared with a combination lock and mentally prepared myself to detach from my phone. The water was nice and cool, there was no wait and I found a lounge chair right away. The view was beautiful and by not having my phone I actually got some reading done. If you want something more quiet and relaxing I'd recommend taking a dip in the pool and then going out to the park. Do note they close for cleaning everyday at 245pm.and reopen at 4pm. Otherwise for the price (aka 0) I thought it was a nice change of pace.

It turns out that the Variety Boys & Girls Club of Queens is an after-school program in Western Queens offered to children aged 6-17 years old. The after-school program runs from 2:30 p.m. until 7 p.m. on weekdays, with some special programs continuing until 8:30 p.m. This organization has been in existence for 50 years and in a year, there are approximately 1,000 children helped by the Boys and Girls Club all living within the vicinity of Astoria. Each member pays $25 or less if the family cannot afford it. Most of the children come from lower income families whose parents need to hold down several jobs to keep life together. I recently visited and spoke with the Executive Director who said that they need mentors for the children who attend the after-school program. He mentioned several individuals who credit the Boys and Girls Club's after-school program for channeling their lives into productive pursuits and keeping them away from gangs. An hour or two a month seems like a reasonable investment of time for someone's future. Don't you think so?

After a quick bag search, I went upstairs to the women's locker room which was cleaner than expected. Staff were nice in reminding us to lock up our stuff. It was busy when it first opened in the morning but then calm downed a bit and folks were able to do more lap swimming. Water was pretty clean and temperature was good; chlorine levels weren't too bad. Sounds like they close for the fall/winter so I'm hoping to come back before it gets cold.

There were a handful of lanes in the narrow pool, yet at least 2-3 classes given in one lane at a given time. So, even though there was 1 instructor and 3 kids, it was crowded and they had to course around each other. Not great when you're learning how to swim. The worst part was that the instructors and even supervisor had ZERO enthusiasm or knew how to make the class exciting for kids. It was a trial class, and the instructor nor the supervisor even introduced themselves to the my kids. The woman instructor, I think her name was Danielle, never even smiled once. The kids got in the pool and she said "do the backstroke" to my 7 year old. My son, thinking he's a good swimmer and giving it a go, tried to swim or float on his back but only sank. She didn't say anything like, "OK good try" or "let's work on your form". She just told him to swim to the other side of the pool. Meanwhile, he can barely swim. I spoke to the supervisor about my concerns that the instructor is not giving my kids any pointers or tips on how to improve their swimming. Just barking orders. He said, "oh, she must be off today, she's usually good." After 30 min watching her completely destroy all the excitement my son had in learning how to swim, I complained again to the supervisor and even spoke to the Take Me To the Water office on the phone. They said they will speak to the instructor after the class and that we won't be charged. No apology. No other solution. And, they even said that instructor was one of the senior ones. This is a swimming farm that has no business teaching young kids. You're lucky if you're instructor is nice. I ended up booking at Asphalt Green. They have great kid-friendly instructors.

I hadn't visited the facility in many years, despite having been deeply involved in the original community mobilization efforts that ensured this property would be preserved for much-needed neighborhood fitness and cultural programming, successfully pushing back against proposals for additional luxury high-rise development. The Asphalt Green team went out of their way to accommodate me as a walk-in, encouraged by a neighbor who regularly swims at the pool and speaks highly of its state-of-the-art design. While waiting in the lobby, I also ran into a fellow runner who is a frequent gym user, a spontaneous moment that speaks volumes about how embedded Asphalt Green is in the local community. I was impressed not only by the facility itself, but by Fritz's knowledge of membership services and the institution's history, especially as I shared personal memories of my own connection to its development. The tour included the locker rooms, pool, and fitness center. The pool is truly stunning and stands out as a best-in-class facility, thoughtfully designed to incorporate accessibility for users of all abilities. Experiencing it firsthand was unexpectedly emotional, a powerful realization of visionary community leader Dr. George Murphy's hopes for the Yorkville community brought to life. The fitness center was active and welcoming, with members of all ages engaged in individual workouts, stretching, and training sessions. The equipment appeared well maintained, well used, and reflective of a vibrant, inclusive membership. As a community-based nonprofit, Asphalt Green, like many NYC nonprofits, does the best it can with the resources available. From my perspective, the facility is exceptionally well run, thoughtfully maintained, and clearly fulfilling its mission to provide a neighborhood-based, state-of-the-art fitness center that truly serves its community. Unless you're trying to mainline liquid candy, I'd skip it. I did some research after the fact classic move, and found out reviews were mixed. Now I understand why. Consider this your friendly warning: unless you enjoy overpriced mediocrity, maybe take your $200 somewhere else. Lesson learned. Never again

It's seems its in Queensbridge (the bridge is in clear, near view) as it is closest to the 21st Queensbridge stop. Getting in wasn't too difficult. Just a short line, ID Check, and email/ticket confirmations. We were told the stairs were the only access point to this rooftop venue (not true). I have torn ligaments and ended up having to navigate this winding staircase. The space itself is absolutely beautiful even with the artificial grass. I love the layout. It's large enough to hold quite a few people. There's a bar and a pool with beautiful flowers. Artificial. But yet still beautiful as the main décor. I could see someone having a wedding reception or some type of other event here. But. It seems they are insane when it comes to pricing. Drinks were about the same as an upscale restaurant, $20-30.... the food?Oh, its wickedly over priced. Mix the base price + tax + fees + auto gratuity + additional gratuity popping up before you can see the actual charges. My friend paid nearly $40 for chicken tenders with fries! Lounge chairs poolside? $130 + tax and the sane aforementioned costs. Pure Insanity. If it wasn't for the amazing DJs that came from Detroit and the super nice head of security this day would have been a wash. This place is extremely expensive for the most random things in addition to admission.
