Late with this review. But I Can say this place is negligent. A year ago to this exact date my mom went into surgery here. After surgery I was advised she was in recovery and healing well. Next thing I know I'm being pulled into a room telling me something went wrong and they sent her to another facility. This dam facility sent my mom into cardiac arrest more than 5 times they gave her a mixture of the wrong blood pressure medications due to the miscommunication between the nurses and anesthesiologist!!!! And bottomed her out They did not tell me anything until they had her in an ambulance and the ambulance left!! Then I WAS TOLD she was sent to UCI when all along they sent her to ST Joseph!!!! This facility told me my mom was ok and breathing on her own when in fact she died 6 got dam times and was on life support!!!! And to top it off this negligent facility sent my mom to the hospital WITH HALF OF SOMEONE ELSES MEDICAL RECORDS IN HER CHART!!! Which was not discovered by their facility...nooo it was discovered by st Joseph hospital... thanks to orangewood my mom now has CHG and is on tons of medications not to mention the burn marks in her skin from as many times as they shocked her!!!! And she went down again and was on a ventilator due to the fluid build up in her lungs from the amount of times she was shocked... she has not been the same since going to this place!!! Investigations are still in process. So stay clear away from this place!!!

I had ankle surgery today, 6/28/24.

From the moment Dr. June Sadiq walked into the room, I could tell he was genuine, compassionate, and truly cared about his patients. He took the time to listen, answered every question thoroughly, and made my grandma feel comfortable during a stressful time. What stood out most was that he never made us feel rushed. He was attentive, thoughtful, and kept checking on her throughout her visit, which meant so much to our family. When I asked if he could speak with my daughter over the phone to explain my grandma's test results, he didn't hesitate. He patiently went over everything, answered all of her questions, and made sure she understood the situation completely. That level of kindness, patience, and professionalism is rare. Dr. Sadiq is truly a gem. UCI Medical Center is incredibly fortunate to have him as part of its team. Thank you for treating my grandma with such compassion and dignity. We will never forget the difference you made.

If I could give this hospital a negative review, I would. Unfortunately, I had a horrible…read moreexperience, and it was not because of the nurses. The nurses were friendly, caring, and did their best. My biggest issue was with the case managers. My father was admitted to the hospital due to shortness of breath, pneumonia, and cancer. He was placed in the older, run-down side of the hospital. During the summer, the room was extremely hot because the AC was not working, and they provided a fan to try to help. The room itself was also very small and uncomfortable. Again, I want to emphasize that we had no issues with the nurses. They were kind and helpful. The problem was the case management. It felt like the main priority was simply getting my father discharged as quickly as possible rather than making sure he had what he needed to safely go home. He was discharged without several necessary medical supplies and we were told they would be delivered afterward. Unfortunately, the vendor could not provide one of the supplies because the prescription they received from the case manager did not include the required model number. The vendor needed an updated prescription before they could send it. I called the case managers repeatedly, leaving multiple messages and calling every day for over a week. No one returned my calls. We eventually had to contact my father's doctors ourselves to try to resolve the issue. This should not have been necessary, especially for a patient dealing with cancer and recovering from pneumonia and breathing problems. It is extremely frustrating and disappointing to feel like the healthcare system no longer puts patients first. Discharge planning should be about making sure patients and their families have the proper support, medications, and medical equipment--not simply getting them out the door. UCI, please do better. Please consider replacing or retraining case managers who are unwilling to communicate with patients and families and who do not follow through on critical discharge needs. Because of this experience, I would not recommend this hospital, primarily because of the case management and lack of follow-up.

I was in traction for 30 days and it didn't work. Had surgery. Recovered well and quickly. A few children passed during that time and terminal was my floor. I felt powerless watching the parents dealing with their reality and those that I would never be seen again. Seeing children, my age, was so scary. I thought I wasn't going to survive. Again, I felt so powerless not being able to help those who were going through so much more than myself. I went back again, I believe in 74, to have a second surgery and I felt no fear. My first surgery went so well! After the anesthesia wore off I became very ill. Couldn't stop throwing up. The doctor helping me said I was a lucky little girl. They had some difficulty removing the pins from my hip and had to drill them out. Said they were prepping me for a transfusion which I ended up not needing. I recovered quickly from that one too. I guess what I am saying is the staff did well with me. Strange because they probably aren't here any longer and my experience with CHOC was great. Hope CHOC is even better today than it was yesterday. Sincerely; Tamara Ballein

CHOC should be incredibly proud of its nurses. We also appreciated the welcoming environment, thoughtful amenities, and emphasis on caring for the whole child. Unfortunately, our experience with several physicians was very different. From the moment our daughter was admitted at 5 a.m., a resident physician suggested she was exaggerating her pain. Other physicians expressed similar concerns, and the hospitalist stated that because she was sitting in bed using her iPad and did not "appear to be in pain," she was fine. I explained that her baseline pain was significant and that distractions helped her cope. His response was that distraction was essentially all she needed after discharge. This overlooked the physical manifestations of her pain, including two nights of crying and visibly shaking. I repeatedly explained that Tylenol, ibuprofen, heat, and ice provided no relief, while muscle relaxants helped only slightly. Despite this, my request for a pain-management consultation was denied. Her pain significantly disrupted her daily life. She struggled to complete school days and frequently needed to come home. I repeatedly emphasized that we needed help managing her pain, but felt these concerns were dismissed. The hospitalist initially took her symptoms seriously and ordered an MRI. However, once imaging returned normal, her persistent pain and unexplained urinary incontinence seemed to receive less attention. The daytime resident on Thursday and Friday was the only physician who consistently advocated for further evaluation, including specialist and psychological consultations. We were grateful for those efforts. We fully supported the psychological evaluation and welcomed outpatient resources. However, I was concerned to see possible somatic symptom disorder documented in her hospital course. The DSM-5-TR includes persistence of symptoms, typically exceeding six months, as a diagnostic criterion, while our daughter had experienced pain for only three weeks. Although no diagnosis was confirmed, this reinforced our concern that her pain was being attributed to psychological factors without sufficient consideration of other explanations. When discharge was discussed, I explained that our daughter had experienced her first night without physically shaking from pain. The hospitalist responded that she was "on the road to recovery." Despite ongoing symptoms, he felt GI and pain-management consultations were unnecessary and recommended addressing her unexplained incontinence outpatient. I supported outpatient follow-up but remained concerned about her unmanaged pain. His recommendation was to continue Tylenol and ibuprofen for up to a month, despite my repeated explanations that neither medication worked. At discharge, we received only one follow-up appointment and were advised to pursue physical therapy independently because obtaining care through CHOC would take too long. We also did not receive the psychological resources we had been promised. After returning home, I reviewed her hospital course and was upset to find her pain described as "intermittent." This was inaccurate. She had experienced persistent pain for three weeks and was still sleeping upright in a hospital bed for relief. Additionally, she was prescribed Flexeril 10 mg with instructions to split the tablets in half. The unscored tablets shattered when we attempted to split them, and our pharmacist advised contacting the hospitalist for a lower-dose prescription. This created another unnecessary challenge in managing her pain after discharge. Ultimately, our daughter left CHOC with nearly the same level of pain she arrived with, no explanation for her incontinence, and no effective pain-management plan. As a mental health professional, I am particularly concerned that her existing anxiety medication may have influenced how physicians interpreted her symptoms. Psychological factors can contribute to physical pain, but they should not automatically become the presumed explanation when imaging is normal. A child's ability to sit quietly, engage with an iPad, or briefly appear comfortable does not invalidate her reported pain. We never expected every answer before discharge. We expected her symptoms to be taken seriously, an appropriate pain-management plan, and coordinated follow-up care. Instead, we repeatedly felt her pain was minimized or characterized as exaggerated. While we remain deeply grateful to CHOC's extraordinary nurses and the physicians who advocated for our daughter, we cannot recommend CHOC's medical care based on how her hospitalization was handled. No child should feel that their pain must be visibly demonstrated at every moment to be believed.

My previous visit ended with a misdiagnosis that didn't match my 26+ year documented history of Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome, and because the actual cause wasn't treated, things got significantly worse until I had no choice but to return. This time, the experience was night and day. I was seen by an actual team of doctors who took the time to review my history. Dr. P Juang and Primary Nurse Reed, correctly diagnosed me with Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome, my actual, long-documented condition, and started the right treatment protocol. I finally got the medications that actually work for my condition, and the relief was immediate compared to the week I'd just been through. They were compassionate, actually listened to how my body was feeling and made sure that even when I left the hospital, I left feeling comfortable. I especially want to shout out my primary nurse, Reed. He was attentive, compassionate, and on top of everything the entire visit. When you're that sick, having a nurse who genuinely cares makes an enormous difference, and Reed went above and beyond. THIS is the standard of care I've known Hoag for over the years. NOT the experience I had last week. Even though last weeks experience ended up with me in pain for over a week and another trip back here, I was to thank you Dr. Juang, Primary Nurse Reed, and the whole team on Friday for listening, reading my chart, and treating the real problem.

PREGNANT WOMEN: PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE CHOOSING HOAG IRVINE FOR DELIVERY…read more A beautiful hospital does NOT equal safe or quality labor care. I gave birth at the new Hoag Irvine location last weekend, and I am still traumatized by the experience. There were multiple moments during labor when I was genuinely terrified for myself and my baby. The facility is gorgeous, honestly, it looks like a five-star hotel. But when you're in labor, you don't care about the building. You care about whether the people and systems responsible for you and your baby are working. My contraction monitor wasn't working. I was in excruciating labor pain and repeatedly told I wasn't even having contractions. Eventually, they realized the monitor itself wasn't functioning properly. By the time I received my epidural, I was already 9 cm dilated. Then, during delivery, the fetal heart monitor stopped working. I was terrified because I had no way of knowing whether my baby was okay. My nurse had apparently been called in at the last minute and seemed completely overwhelmed. She was texting on her phone during my delivery. Then, as my baby was almost out, the doctor wasn't there. Labor had to be paused while they got a midwife to come assist with the delivery. My epidural catheter was left in after delivery. I repeatedly called for someone to remove it and was told my nurse was "out for the day" and there was no coverage. I should not have had to repeatedly track down staff after giving birth to make sure my epidural was removed. Even more concerning: my newborn's vitals and measurements were not taken after birth. I had to ask THREE separate times. They weren't done until we were transferred to postpartum, hours after my baby was born. The entire experience made me feel like this hospital opened before its staffing, systems, equipment, and workflow were truly ready for labor and delivery. Staff appeared overwhelmed, equipment malfunctioned at critical moments, and there seemed to be confusion about coverage and responsibilities. I genuinely feared for my baby's safety during parts of this labor. This has been the most traumatic experience caused by Hoag. Don't choose a delivery hospital because it looks beautiful. Choose based on the quality, staffing, and reliability of the care you'll receive when you and your baby need it most. I personally would not deliver here again!!!!

The hospital is terribly understaffed, my father was treated poorly by the staff constantly during his stay. He sat in his our urine for over an hour. I know this because I was talking to him on the phone while we traveled to come visit him, trying to calm him down. The worst part was his discharge, I was notified by Andrew the 3rd floor nurse that he was being discharged, I explained to Andrew I'd be there in approximately 1 hour due to traffic. During that hour drive to get my father security was unable to find/bring him his clothes to get dressed as he requested. When I got there Andrew and I tried for another 30 minutes to get his clothes. My father's pants were lost but eventually located. What a nightmare!! They never found his socks. Then as we got downstairs in the elevator into the lobby by the security check in area, the doors were locked preventing us from leaving. My father being able to see my car 9 feet from the doors and not being able to leave was completely traumatic. He was panicking and yelling, it hurt to see him that way. I felt helpless. Andrew the 3rd floor nurse and myself had to pry the doors open to leave. The other option was a long detour through the second floor near the emergency room entrance. To which my father cried out, Robert please get me out of here or he was going to call 911 for help. My father who is a very strong man, cried once he was inside my car and literally sobbed continuously from Garden Grove Hospital to his home In Huntington Beach. That drive at 6:45pm took us about 45 minutes. Heartbreaking to say the least. If you care about your family and friends please go anywhere else but here. My father is considering legal action. The poor reviews for this hospital are 1000% legit. So many 1 star reviews, saying this place should be shut down and how terrible it is. I tried to count the 1 star reviews but it was too many.

There were so many people who cared for us that I unfortunately wasn't able to get everyone's name. I want those people to know they have not been forgotten. The doctors, nurses, midwives, NICU team, lactation consultants, Health Scholars, volunteers, and staff all contributed to making one of the most important and vulnerable experiences of our lives feel safe and supported. I especially want to recognize the doctor who started my induction. Although I unfortunately did not get their name, I am incredibly grateful for the care and guidance we received as we began a process that was completely new to us. Diana and Sandra were our nurses in the beginning and were wonderful as we settled in and began the journey of welcoming our baby. During delivery, Amy, our midwife, and Aida, our nurse, helped us welcome James into the world. We are incredibly grateful for their care, encouragement, and support during such an emotional and unforgettable moment. When James was born, he needed immediate medical attention, and an entire team stepped in to care for him. I wish I had gotten every person's name because they deserve to be recognized. Watching the doctors and nurses respond so quickly, calmly, and attentively was incredibly reassuring. They made sure our baby received everything he needed while keeping us supported as brand-new parents. I especially want to recognize the NICU doctor who cared for James, along with the entire NICU team. Having your newborn need additional care immediately after birth is incredibly emotional, and knowing he was surrounded by such capable and compassionate people gave us tremendous comfort. We are especially grateful to Thuy and Doris, James's NICU nurses. They were incredibly attentive and gave us so much reassurance when we needed it most. We will always remember the care they gave our little boy and the kindness they showed us as his parents. Our postpartum experience continued that same level of care. Tiffany, Tiawen, Jaimini, and Lacey, our final postpartum nurse, were all wonderful and helped us through those important first days as a new family. Rose, our lactation consultant, was also an important source of help and support. There were other nurses and lactation consultants whose names I didn't get, but whose kindness and guidance made a lasting impact. I also want to thank the doctor who performed James's circumcision. I unfortunately didn't get the doctor's name, but I want their care to be recognized as part of our wonderful experience. The Health Scholars and volunteers, along with staff working behind the scenes, also deserve recognition. There were so many acts of kindness--people checking on us, answering questions, offering reassurance, helping us learn how to care for our new baby, and making us feel surrounded by people who genuinely cared. What made Kaiser Anaheim so special wasn't just one person or one moment. It was the entire team and the consistency of the care we received. From the doctor who began my induction to our labor and delivery team, the people who immediately cared for James, his NICU doctor and nurses, our postpartum nurses and lactation consultants, the doctor who performed his circumcision, and everyone else we encountered, we continually felt our family was in caring and capable hands. We never felt like just another patient, another baby, or another room. We felt cared for as a family. To Diana, Sandra, Aida, Amy, Thuy, Doris, Tiffany, Tiawen, Jaimini, Lacey, Rose, the doctors whose names I wish I had gotten, and every other incredible person who cared for our family: thank you. Thank you for caring for me, for caring for our son, and for supporting our family during such a vulnerable, emotional, and life-changing experience.
