I visited The District CR in downtown Cedar Rapids during a recent business trip and had an overall…read moreenjoyable experience. First impressions were a bit confusing--the entrance makes you feel like you're walking into an office building. There's a door to the right with signage for what seems to be a sister bar that's only open on limited nights, but the actual restaurant is straight back. Once inside, the space is large and open, with plenty of room between tables and a sizable bar area. I sat at the bar and learned about their Whiskey Wednesday specials, which included several types of Old Fashioneds and whiskey flights. While it sounded intriguing, I opted not to partake. They also offer daily drink special themes. The menu is eclectic, with a mix of Cajun, Italian, and American fare. I went with the Cacio e Pepe with Elephant Ear (Orcchiette) pasta, and added shrimp along with a half wedge salad as a premium side. The pasta itself was delicious--perfectly cooked with a rich, peppery flavor. However, I wish the server had mentioned that the shrimp was Cajun-seasoned. While great on its own, it slightly overpowered the pasta. The wedge salad was a bit of a letdown--the lettuce was watery, which diluted the overall flavor. The dish also came with garlic bread, which was yummy. Service was outstanding--attentive, friendly, and efficient. Unfortunately, it was hard to get a real read on the restaurant's vibe because it was pretty empty on a Wednesday night.

My friends ordered, wine and draft beer, I ordered a fountain root beer (I would've rather had an IBC, Mill Creek or Jones). We had NOLA Hot Honey Taters for an appetizer. Honey drizzled over the top of fried sweet potato squares with a spicy dipping sauce. They were okay but I prefer my cooked/fried veggies to not have a vegetable "snap" to them, these didn't quite have that snap but they were too firm for my preference. The flavor was good though. Two of my friends had Zopa Toscana. Which was Italian vegetable soup, which reminded them of wedding soup a little bit. Rustic cut veggies but the potatoes were cut too large and weren't fully cooked compared to the other vegetables. Both of my friends picked the larger potatoes out and ate the rest. Again the flavor was good, temperature was not, it was just north of warm. Portion sizes were good and the flavor was good. As is a theme with almost all our food was the temperature was not hot. The food tasted fresh but it just wasn't hot enough temp-wise. One of us had Double Down Sausage Bowl which he thoroughly enjoyed. Another had the Muffuletta - New Orleans Classic w/ a twist with double meat, he enjoyed it and it was good. Another had the Shug's Creole Salad which she liked. I had the Cacio e Pepe and I added chicken, given the creole lean to the menu I expected blackened chicken but it was only grilled chicken. The garlic bread was good but my side of cheesy grits was more formed than I expected. The flavor was good but there was no gooey factor that you'd expect with cheesy grits. They came out still formed of the scoop they used to plate them, so not even as moist as regular grits. Overall a positive experience. The flavor of the food was good but the temperature of the food was not. I will return and give them another shot as the flavor was good enough to try them again.

The brisket was perfectly cooked: incredibly tender, juicy, and packed with natural flavor. What really stood out was the seasoning. It enhanced the meat without overpowering it, allowing the rich, smoky beef flavor to shine through with every bite. The customer service was just as impressive. Everyone was genuinely friendly, welcoming, and attentive, making the entire experience even more memorable. Outstanding food paired with exceptional hospitality is a rare combination - a gem hidden in Cedar Rapids. Highly recommend the place if you're ever in town.

Terri was with me this time and got the last burger they had as part of the Pulled Pork Burger so I tried one of the daily specials....a Cuban Salad Sandwich. Not quite sure what I was expecting but the sandwich wasn't what I was expecting. I'll describe it as a Cuban Egg Salad Sandwich...Cubanized by the pork and mustard it was a good sandwich but I was looking for more pork to be honest. I also ordered the Brisket Eggroll again and tried the Smoked Mac and Cheese this time...excellent choices! Terri enjoyed the Pulled Pork Burger as much as I did on my previous stop. She ordered the fried potatoes as a side and thought the addition of onions to it would be a good idea...I tried them and I concur, they were very good but the onion idea would put them over the top. We grabbed a 3 MEAT COMBO to go with Pulled Pork, Pulled Chicken, and Brisket as the main event and the fried potatoes, baked beans, and smoked mac and cheese for the sides. This will make for a great meal later and tomorrow which is also what I did on my first stop here a few weeks ago. We'll be back again as the food is delicious, the service is very friendly and accommodating and the ambiance of the place is very comfortable....when you get out of your vehicle and the business end of those two smokers hit your senses you know your in for a treat!

I should label this place as corporate dinner with my leadership. It's funny that twice I've been…read moreto this restaurant during the wizard to Cedar Rapids. Both of them were because of a corporate event. The lady who was serving us was from England, so was very sweet and kind, and her recommendations were good Food overall is a bar food with wings and lots of greasy appetizers. I love their pretzels. I had their mac & cheese with chicken. I got bored with it because they have like a huge potion but the flavor remains very constant probably I'll try some bowls next time. i'm at the event or paying for it. The best part about this place is their huge patio with being around the most busiest street of Cedar Rapids Their IPA beer is super light and not as heavy as other IPAs in the market very nice flavor

Didn't try their beer which I probably should have since their wine pour was barely 2 fingers. Pro tip: just get the bottle if you're going the wine route. I had the chicken sticky buns and those were soooo good. Hubby had the buffalo wings and loved all of them. Service was nice and always helpful. Here's the reason for the 3 stars though, there was a food runner that, bless her heart, may have been under the weather but literally sneezed into someone's soup as she was carrying it to them. Constantly touching her face (nose, eyes) and going straight to picking up another order. We were right by the kitchen so we saw it all. I'm aware that's a touchy situation and no we weren't able to see how many times she washed her hands which she totally could have, but it was super busy after 6pm so just wondering if she even had the time. This isn't an exaggeration and I don't like throwing anyone under the bus as they are hard workers, but the whole table saw the sneeze into the soup and it still got delivered. Food was great and next time I'll try the beer but will still be sitting by the kitchen :)

After experiencing fine dining through living on the West Coast and traveling internationally, I…read morewas excited to learn that the town I grew up in had a restaurant that offered a tasting menu. I knew I had to try it on a recent visit back home. My experience was mixed. The excellent: our table service was next level with each dish being thoroughly explained. We were educated on the thought process behind each wine pairing as well. Between each course our table was cleaned and we were presented with fresh silverware. The great: the food was presented beautifully and our meal looked incredibly impressive. The interior definitely invoked the Brooklyn vibes that inspired the restaurant in the first place. It feels very upscale hipster. The disappointing: though the overall experience was tasty and texturally perfect, each dish we tried had some overpowering element and flavors were not balanced. After the tuna crudo all I could taste was celery, after the morel mushroom pasta all I could taste were the pungent chive blossoms, and the trout skin/asparagus were over-grilled and I felt like I was eating a well prepared charcoal briquette. Maybe I'll give this place another try next time I'm in town and hope the flavors make as much sense as the rest of the experience.
