Don't be put off by the "popcorn" in the title. We went for the ice cream. There's a great variety and everything we tried was delicious. Our crew tried the buttered pecan, the raspberry-lemon Italian ice, and Hailey's comet. Be aware that one scoop is a huge serving here. Service was really friendly and helpful. Walking into Almost Famous Popcorn is like stepping into Willy Wonka's factory if it was run by popcorn-obsessed geniuses with a sprinkle of Midwest charm and a serious caramel addiction. I thought I was strong. I thought I could walk out with just a small bag. Reader, I left with seven. SEVEN. One for each day of the week. Doctor's orders (probably). The Dill Pickle flavor slapped me harder than my grandma during Uno. The Birthday Cake made me reconsider every other dessert I've ever celebrated with. And don't even get me started on the Cheddar. Far too often you go into an ice cream shop only to find that they have either tried way too hard to make really strange flavors or they haven't tried all and simply have the most generic ice cream there is. Not here. This shop has some of the most incredible flavors I have tasted. The proportions of ingredients are perfect. No one flavor in an ice cream overwhelms the other so that when you take a bite you can taste everything that you are supposed to taste. As far as giving you suggestions as to what to try. Personally, it's ice cream. It is all amazing. However, if you really want to nail me down with a recommendation I would suggest the "This @&$# Just Got Serious." I can't speak to the popcorn but a) this shop is adorable, b) they have a wide variety of sodas including HUCKLEBERRY SODA WHAT?!?!?!, and c) they have great ice cream with HUGE servings at a classic cheap Iowa price point. The only downside is that their waffle cones aren't freshly made (we watched them pull out multiple large sleeves of them while we were paying), but I got a waffle cone and thought it still tasted delicious, so I didn't mind. It's also in a wonderful little area of Cedar Rapids that is practically begging for you to walk around and take in the cute little shops while you enjoy your dessert. When did Great American Popcorn Company become Almost Famous? It doesn't really matter to me, other than the fact Almost Famous is nearly identical (imo) to the Great American Popcorn Company you'll find in Galena, Illinois. Their edible merchandise offerings, branding and packaging are very similar as well. Did the name change happen so that people wound't confuse the two popcorn shops? Is there a loose connection between the two? My inquiring mind would love to know. We received several different popcorn and fudge flavors for Christmas. Who doesn't love consumable gifts? A favorite of mine was the "Land O' Lakes Cheddar Cheese" and "Crunchberry Day" was tasty as well, albeit headache inducing sweet. I recommend both. Crunchberry Day is a quintessential representation of Cedar Rapids, Iowa bundled up in bite size form. They have all of their flavors listed on their website. The Raspberry Chocolate fudge was yummy, as was Pistachio, Pralines and Cream and Mint Chocolate. Recommend. read more

I've been a fan since they were known as "Great American Popcorn Company". I'm not much of a fan of sweet options, so their savory options appeal to me. The Parmesan Garlic, Jalapeno Cheddar and Fire Breathing Dragon are my favourites. I believe if shopping in store, you'll still get the 3rd bag for free when purchasing 2, but I could be mistaken. They also have a great ice cream menu, and LOTS of craft sodas for sale --- I can't vouch for either of those as I haven't tried them. If you're looking from a change from Dairy Queen or Parlor City on 42nd street - hop down to Almost Famous. Their ice cream flavors are always changing and always good. Pro tip: you can get a pint with half one flavor and half of another flavor. Some of my favorites are Kitty Kitty Bang Bang (cheesecake ice cream, raspberry swirl, chocolate chunks) and their Carrot Mango sorbet. That's right. Carrot. Try it. As far as popcorn, the selections can be variable. My favorite, hands down, is the cheddar over caramel (caramel corn coated in delicious yellow cheese powder). They have had limited edition Firey cheese over caramel. That is literally the most delicious thing I've ever eaten... I just wish they had it available more often. The service is fair. I've gone in several times and the teens behind the counter don't say anything or wait for you to ask them for help. Not rude, just not friendly. My wife and I go out of our way to stop here for the cheese caramel corn. Of course, once we're there we usually walk out with homemade fudge and/or ice cream. They have about a million flavors of everything, and free samples for days. All the popcorn and ice cream can be tried and they won't give you even an ounce of guff about it. The service was exceptional as well as quick, and the woman who helped us pick out our popcorn was friendly as well! I used to love this place...until I took a lick of my ice cream and a HUGE WET HAIR latched onto my tongue. It was clearly not mine because the second end of the hair was buried into the scoop.
