Cornbread & Honey Cupcake, Peach Black Raspberry Daiquiri Cupcake
    Kayla Y.

Pros: *Cornbread and honey cupcake had great flavor, the accurate grit of cornbread yet still felt moist and fluffy like a cupcake. *Attentive staff ready to provide service *Free water and cups readily available on the counter *Gluten free options *Early 2000's rock streaming through the speakers *Reasonable prices *Cookies and pound cake available too *A rotating selection of cupcakes based on the day Cons: *Parking can often be full in front of the store *Peach Black Raspberry Daiquiri cupcake was a bust. It was wonderfully moist but tasted nothing of peach, except for the 1/4 a tiny slice of peach that sat at the bottom of my cupcake. The little green dollop of lime frosting overtook the entire cupcake. The frosting was overwhelmingly sweet and too abundant in contrast to the cupcake. Yuck! I won't get that flavor again.

After moving away from Iowa and moving to Minnesota I have been craving scratch Cupcakery a lot. I have been here on multiple occasions however on this visit I finally learned the holy grail that I have been missing my whole life. Their cupcakes are always fantastic and they rotate flavors periodically so that there is always something different each day. I have never had a bad cupcake. And the staff behind the glass is always patient and helpful and seem to really enjoy their jobs. But what scratch has been hiding from me is that they make a Cupcake shake. You choose your cupcake and they put it into a blender with magic and make this delicious creamy milkshake that is almost like a hybrid malt. It costs about $6 to have this done and it is worth every single penny. As my boyfriend described it, he said that he felt like he could taste every aspect of that cupcake in his milkshake. This man is a milkshake fanatic. It has been two days since I last had that cupcake milkshake and I am seriously contemplating about seeing if there's a way to franchise this in Minnesota. Next time you go to scratch Cupcakery you have to get a Cupcakery Shakery... I made that name up, it doesn't exist but it should!

Loved this cupcake shop. I got the Sully which was a big mix of things like peanut butter frosting, oats, m&ms and chocolate chip base, I think. Our friend got the chocolate strawberry. Let me just say, the Sully was so so good. The base was moist and the frosting was just YUM.

Cupcakery. What a fun word. It just rolls off your tongue... cup-caaaake-er-eeee. Scratch CUPCAKERY is a locally grown business that lives in a handful of cities in Iowa. This one lives conveniently at the Iowa River Landing, awesome location. I can't tell you a cupcake I haven't devoured in a second flat from here. They're all moist, decadent and beautifully decorated. I'd say any of them that involves chocolate and then has even more chocolate topping it-- is my favorite. Come try my go-to cupcakery because... 1. Their website features a calendar with the flavors of cupcakes and cookies they'll be making each day. (We are talking nearly two dozen items here folks. I don't know about you, but at a place like this if I don't come prepared I'd be standing at the counter drooling while changing my mind fifty times to eventually buy the entire menu of the day.) 2. $2 a cupcake seems very reasonable -- get one free of you buy a dozen. (12 for $22) 3. Parking is a non-issue. Free and plentiful. 4. Not a cupcake person? I don't buy it, you'll find at least ONE here that'll make you swoon. Literally-- they have over 300 cupcakes in their repertoire. And if your favorite isn't on rotation, you can special order it. Just be sure your order is for at least a dozen. 5. They are super quick. For orders you just have to call them by 2pm the day before you need them!

I'm not a baker, but I've noticed that there is somewhat of a "spectrum" of cupcake textures. Some can be really dense while some are fluffier. The cupcakes at Scratch are somewhat in between. They're more on the dense side compared to another very well known cupcake establishment downtown. I prefer when it's a little more on the dense side, especially when paired with a nice thick, creamy frosting. Also, my cupcake was only $2! What a deal!

I have been in love with Scratch ever since discovering it while living in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area years ago. $2/apiece or $22/dozen may seem expensive, but trust me, WELL worth it!!! They have a very large assortment of flavors....I just tried the lemon and it was delightful! (Mad at myself for only getting one!). PB&J, red velvet, hot chocolate, chocolate mint, Reese's pieces, pumpkin cheesecake, just to name a few. The cake itself is very moist, never had a dry one.....my favorite part is the frosting.... Best. Frosting. Ever. Anywhere. It is smooth, just the right amount of sweetness... doesn't have that fakey, artificial food coloring taste you get at some places. It seems like a ton of frosting when you look at it, but then you take bite and realize it is just right! Well see how long this dozen lasts!

I was disappointed, when I think of a cupcake I expect a moist cake, these cupcakes were dense and most of the frostings were overly sweet. After tasting many of them the red velvet cheesecake was by far the best tasting. The peanut butter frosting was decent, and the presentation was top notch....however the taste is where it's at and these cupcakes unfortunately didn't do it for me.

It was very overwhelming for me because I had never visited before. I entered the store, and a customer was waiting, presumably for an order, while a nice young woman worked behind the counter. She greeted me, but didn't ask if I had ever been there before, if I was looking for something in particular, or if I had any questions, for example, what's the difference between a Bundlet and a Bundtini? Educating your customers; this is a missed opportunity. I don't think you should assume your customers have been there before and know what they want. I did have a question about the Bundtlet towers (I think they're called) and whether the flavors of the tower could be mixed and matched. I ended up purchasing a few Bundlets a la carte style. All that aside, while the cakes and frosting were good (in terms of taste, freshness, size, and quality), they didn't knock my socks off. I'll probably reserve them for a special occasion. I spent about $18 on three Bundlets: red velvet, lemon, and chocolate chocolate chip. Convenient parking spaces outside the shop are marked for Nothing Bundt Cakes customers.

This location is convenient, just off the Coralville strip. Parking is a non issue and online ordering is offered. It's open Monday through Saturday. I ordered a few dozen bundtinis for a party. I was thrilled to see they had pumpkin, as a seasonal flavor. (Delish.) But was so saddened to see their monthly special (a caramel apple at that time) was not offered in the bundtini size. Pricing seemed a bit steep to me, but seems on par with other cupcake/cake/bakery spots-- so what do I know :) I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon. Was waited on instantly, but I did get to peruse their super small storefront which offers a few chairs but generally is just for party supplies available for purchase. (The candle selection is lit! Ha, get it?) Overall, it was available on time, made fresh, complete and the staff was pleasant! I'd recommend Nothing Bundt Cakes as its product is solid and turnaround time (I ordered less than 24 hours in advance) is super quick for the area.
