After moving away from Iowa and moving to Minnesota I have been craving scratch Cupcakery a lot. I have been here on multiple occasions however on this visit I finally learned the holy grail that I have been missing my whole life. Their cupcakes are always fantastic and they rotate flavors periodically so that there is always something different each day. I have never had a bad cupcake. And the staff behind the glass is always patient and helpful and seem to really enjoy their jobs. But what scratch has been hiding from me is that they make a Cupcake shake. You choose your cupcake and they put it into a blender with magic and make this delicious creamy milkshake that is almost like a hybrid malt. It costs about $6 to have this done and it is worth every single penny. As my boyfriend described it, he said that he felt like he could taste every aspect of that cupcake in his milkshake. This man is a milkshake fanatic. It has been two days since I last had that cupcake milkshake and I am seriously contemplating about seeing if there's a way to franchise this in Minnesota. This one lives conveniently at the Iowa River Landing, awesome location. I can't tell you a cupcake I haven't devoured in a second flat from here. They're all moist, decadent and beautifully decorated. I'd say any of them that involves chocolate and then has even more chocolate topping it-- is my favorite. Come try my go-to cupcakery because... 1. Their website features a calendar with the flavors of cupcakes and cookies they'll be making each day. (We are talking nearly two dozen items here folks. I don't know about you, but at a place like this if I don't come prepared I'd be standing at the counter drooling while changing my mind fifty times to eventually buy the entire menu of the day.) 2. $2 a cupcake seems very reasonable -- get one free of you buy a dozen. (12 for $22) 3. Parking is a non-issue. Free and plentiful. 4. Not a cupcake person? I don't buy it, you'll find at least ONE here that'll make you swoon. I'm not a baker, but I've noticed that there is somewhat of a "spectrum" of cupcake textures. Some can be really dense while some are fluffier. The cupcakes at Scratch are somewhat in between. They're more on the dense side compared to another very well known cupcake establishment downtown. For the most part I have liked all the cupcakes I've gotten from Scratch over the years. The cake is dense and moist and usually not too sweet. I think the frosting/fillings are too much sometimes though. My favorites have been the lemon love, pumpkin cheesecake, and strawberry rhubarb. I find that the cupcakes with a balance of sweet and tart seem to be what I like best from Scratch. Least favorite was the vegan smores, it was almost sickenly sweet. Parking is usually easy. I went one day to pick up some cupcakes after work for a birthday party. The place reeked of sewage and their bathroom was closed off to the public. I'm no expert but that can't be safe? There were also multiple broken appliances including a freezer that was leaking on the floor and a dusty coffee machine. The people working were less than enthusiastic to take my order. I felt like an inconvenience when asking questions. Once at the party, there were multiple cupcakes that were messed up and sloppily frosted. I don't know how long those cupcakes were sitting out before I bought them. They were dense and the frosting was gritty. In one cupcake, there was a solid chunk of butter. Man, Iowa City has a rockin' cupcake scene! So although I can't tell you which is my favorite, I can tell you which ones are amazingly delicious... ... all of them. Scratch has a great location for one. It's side by side with one of the area's best coffee shops, which makes for a wicked awesome combination if you're getting your goods to go. Scratch offers drip coffee in airpots and it's definitely not great, so I wish the two shops would work together so you could get a cup of Kickapoo coffee from the neighboring cafe without leaving the cupcake shop (and visa versa, since I feel like I'm breaking some kind of rule by eating a Scratch cupcake while working from the neighboring coffee bar). They also have a unique setup; the flavors are all fancily lined up on a display counter, which reminds me of an old school ice cream shop, but also makes it a little trickier to look over all the flavors and cupcakes during busy times. There's always a nice assortment of flavors, the buttercream frosting is delicious, and the cake base always hits the spot. read more

My first time trying. Terrible. Would not recommend. It was 2 pm. Some flavors sold out. I tried 2 pnut butter flavored cupcakes, one was chocolate the other was lighter colored cake. $2.50 each. The frostings were just globbed on top, not spread out over the cupcake. The pnut butter frosting on the chocolate cake was good. The chocolate cupcake was cold and dense, but had a slight "going bad" taste to it. These are regular sized cupcakes. The light flavored cupcake had mini m & m's on top the frosting, but I could not make out the flavor of that frosting or the cupcake itself. Very disappointing. Bakery sweets are my thing, so I know a good item when I taste it and see it. Maybe it was just an off day? However I didn't know they had cookie dough you can eat, but that's for the next visit. We stopped and got a six pack. I bought a dozen of their best assortment for a client meeting a few days ago and each one was fantastic. There's a wide array of options and they are all wonderful. The frosting is light and not too sweet. Not a typical whipped buttercream. The cake isn't necessarily moist or dry, however it is VERY dense. I'm also confused because I'm seeing a lot of the same cupcakes, cupcake styles, cupcake flavors, and cupcake liners at many different cupcake places. I'm curious to know whether these are actually homemade, made from a box, or frozen all together. Check out "That One Cupcake Place" in CR. The cupcakes are exactly the same. "Take the Cake" is also very similar... The only type of theme for these cupcake is the topping. You notice it's either vanilla or chocolate cake (some odd ball batter flavors thrown in every once in a while) with a flavored frosting and topping. I just find this place dull for some reason. There's not a ton or creativity involved for these. No snazzy frosting styles. Anyone could frost the cupcakes the way scratch does. ANYONE. I'm not sure...I'm just not that impressed. Meh. If you just tried Scratch for the first time and decide that is the place for you, try around Iowa City/CR before settling. It only gets better from here. read more

It's conveniently located at IRL, so there's an abundance of parking. There are also an abundance of flavors, and most of them are quirky and fun options! Although I did wish they had a few more daily "normal" options (red velvet cheesecake was a special that day, but no plain ole red velvet on the regular rotation?), their fun and creative flavors will certainly brighten your day! I had the grasshopper, with a mint frosting, chocolate cake, and chocolate ganache, and it was scrumptious. I've also tried the monster flavor equivalent (I think they have a cutesy name for it), which was great, and my friend swears by their "prince" vanilla-on-vanilla option. I don't adore their buttercream frosting because it's a little too light and whipped for my taste (I love a denser frosting), but it's light years better than the sickeningly sweet options at Molly's. Sorry to the 90% of the IC population that I just offended, but I stand by my words. It's $2 a cupcake, which seems about right for the area and for the items. I am delighted by the sheer number of flavors available at Scratch Cupcakery. When I visited on Monday, I had a really hard time choosing just a few. Then, after eating my delicious cupcake, I hopped online and learned that's not even the half of it. They rotate dozens of flavors throughout the week, making each day different, exciting, and worth another visit. I ordered four cupcakes: the Sully, the Blackbottom, the Blackout, and the Chocolate Covered Strawberry. I ate the Blackbottom for breakfast and it was delicious, a chocolate base with layers of chocolate chip cheesecake and chocolate ganache. Later that night, I tried the Blackout which was chocolate cake, chocolate ganache, chocolate buttercream frosting, and chocolate shavings. Also amazing. I picked Sully for my mom, as it sounded like something she'd like: lots of peanut butter, cookie dough, oatmeal, and a few chocolate chips. I was right on the money and she loved it. My dad is a strawberry nut, so for him, the chocolate covered strawberry: chocolate cake, strawberry frosting, strawberries, and chocolate sauce. He liked his too. No complaints from anyone, only unadulterated affection. Man, do I have a game changer for you. I'll start at the beginning though - I'm originally from Cedar Falls, which (I believe) is where Scratch started. When it opened up there, it was immediately a hit. They catered for just about everything in high school, and I even had a couple friends work there. When I came to school in Iowa City, it was really nice to be able to celebrate good grades or drown my sorrows of bad grades with a taste of home. I absolutely love the Raspberry love, but number 1 is the Sully - a monster cookie-esque cupcake with easily the best frosting I have ever tasted. My game changer? Cut half the bottom off, stick it on top like a sandwich, and stick that sucker in the fridge for a bit. I love eating them this way, and have convinced all of my close friends to do the same.
