I like that they have a good selection of Celestron brand telescopes. I was first introduced to astronomy in my sophomore year of college, when every week, as a class, we'd bring our own telescopes, to Skull Valley Cemetery, with the professor. I dreaded physics and chemistry labs, but always looked forward to Thursday night astronomy lab, when we'd pack into the school vans at 7 PM, return at about 1 AM, then have an early morning meal with some of my classmates at Denny's, often with our professor, who was a retired NASA scientist. I had the same Celestron telescope for both my beginner and advanced college astronomy classes and never had a problem with it. My classmates had different brands and types of telescopes, but Celestron seemed to be the most reliable. Since then, I've tried various brands of refractor and reflector telescopes. I always end up selling or returning the other brands and stick to Celestron. Nowadays, I have one Celestron refractor and one Celestron reflector telescope. I sometimes come to OC Telescope to scope out the newest products, as well as get my reflector telescope cleaned and collimated, ready for my next astronomy adventure. If you're considering the hobby, there is nothing like it, and OC Telescope is a good place to start. Observing the night sky, *in an area with very little light pollution* (which is key), will change your outlook on how truly insignificant we are relative to the galaxy, outer space, and universe. It's also a very underrated activity with beautiful (and mysterious) sights to see. If you go to an area with minimal light pollution, on a clear night (given that the moon is absent or not too bright), you will see not only planets, stars, satellites, and space debris, but also the occasional shooting star, meteoroid, as well as the unexplainable. Sometimes, you'll see something whisk across the entire sky, feel chills in your body, and realize science has not explained everything. Astronomy is truly a magical hobby. It's hard to believe that there isn't a Creator to all of this, especially after a night of stargazing. read more

This place is fantastic. My Meade LX 90 had a broken part in the side arm. I called and spoke with Kai. He was very friendly and told me to bring the telescope in and they can look at it for free for 10 minutes. I brought in my telescope and Kai helped me. He took off the arm and saw the problem and fixed it while I waited for a very reasonable fee. He also gave me good pointers on how best to transport my telescope and good viewing places to try. His business associate was also very nice and knowledgeable as well. I highly recommend this place for repair services. read more

Full disclosure: I have never been to the OC Telescope store. However, my wife and I attended one of OC Telescope's 'Star Parties' in Irvine and were very favorably impressed. This is a gathering of amateur astronomers who set up their telescopes in a park and offer celestial views to those who happen to show up. I was very impressed by the friendliness and enthusiasm of the telescope's owners. Each was very gracious and even anxious to demonstrate the views that they chose. It was a beautiful, warm clear night, perfect for observing. Most views were beyond fascinating, and while waiting for darkness to set in (the event started at 7 PM) the enterprising amateurs were all aimed at the moon. Those observations were outstanding, and I noticed that many of the moon's craters have craters within. Later, several telescopes were turned to Saturn, gloriously showing off those gorgeous rings. Too bad GM's division of the same name failed, their logo was terrific. But I digress. I was especially impressed by a Meade reflector and very sturdy tripod set up by an amateur astronomer/father whose pre-teen kids were also enjoying the obeservations. The group's organizer (and I believe store-owner) focused his massive Celestron reflector telescope on an impossibly distant nebula, which was pinkish in color. Wow. He also very patiently answered my rank amateur questions about scopes and observing. So Mike, thank you for organizing this event and putting up with everybody's questions. So, the guy told me to show up before 6. I did what I was told and I drove there but, no one was at the business. That was when I learned that the 30-minute drive there was more than double that for my return trip home due to horrendous northbound traffic. Great! The next day I again went out to look at telescopes. I walked in... with my only intention being to get some guidance for a potential purchase... you know, ask questions and head home to read up on thebsuggestions, based on what I wanted from a telescope. Well, after an hour of what I will call a true "class" (I even took notes). I told the employee that I was good. He about said goodbye to me when I realized he was confused. You see I had not intended to buy anything that day but this guy's knowledge wowed me. So, I made a revision to my words and I said, "No... I am good I want that telescope now." I also asked him to set me up with a bunch of eyepieces and soemthing that would allow me to attach my phone to it, but not the cheap kind (set me up with a Celestron, which I love), so I could take pictures through the scope. I also inquired about books and a side scope to mount to the secondary saddle (I may go get that tomorrow). Anyway, I left the shop with over $1600 worth of stuff on a day when I didn't want to spend any coin. THAT is how good the guy was to boot I am already planning my upgrade down the road a bit. Oh I need to clarify... my purchase didn't happen at this shop in Orange County... they weren't home, remember? I now show at shop in Woodland Hills. Amazing staff and another difference between these two shops is that they didn't rush to get me off the phone either. That was the OC shop's first mistake. I built rockets that went up 25000 feet as a boy. Now I am a retired eye surgeon (meaning optics). Mike and Lorenz are first class in all respects. I have a 8" Schmidt-Cassegrain with star tracker on layaway for 10 months but I will probably buy it in full before then. My excuse for buying this $3K scope plus a $5K personal observatory dome is my latest grandson, Elias, due for birthing in 6 weeks. When he is older, I want him to LOOK UP and see where he came from and where he is going back to. Yes, I believe we came from star stuff and that is what we are going back to. Long over due but, my dad and I had the pleasure of meeting the owner Mike and experienced his excitement and knowledge for astronomy. He spent a good amount of time on us and helped us decide which telescope to buy. I highly recommend his shop and it was worth the drive. You can't get that kind of knowledge and experience clicking on a telescope to buy online. In the short time we've had the telescope we've seen things that have truly left us astonished. Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and the moon are worth the price of admission alone. Like Mike said after a few times cursing while aligning the telescope you get the hang of it. If you can read the manual and watch a few YouTube videos you can align your telescope. The SkyPortal app on the iPad is handy as well as it really enhances the user experience. It's like having Mike with you explaining what you are looking at and how to find the best objects to view. Again worth the trip and worth every penny spent. The memories we've created so far are priceless. Advice: be patient with your scope and spend the time learning about it. It's a humbling and fascinating experience owning a telescope! Called to ask about my used scope and accessories. Was instructed by the staff to send pictures and they would provide me with a virtual quote. I did they said 1200.00 wholesale for the entire kit. I brought it down to their facility only to be told they would give me only 600.00 for the scope all of the diagonals and eyepieces and software was trash pennies on the dollar.. Had I know that before I would not have brought them my equipment and wasted my time shame on them.... read more

I have to say Mike is the man! I live locally and was so excited to find out that one of the few telescope retail stores in the United States was down the street from our office. I've been looking into getting a new telescope and decided to stop on by and take a look! Mike makes you feel right at home the minute you walk in. He has the ability to not make you feel stupid, and that it's okay to be a beginner.( in any hobby there's always those snobby people who ruin it for the amateurs and mike is not one of them). I walked in with cash and walked out confident with a 4se, a tiny bada** telescope (and not with any cheap upselling that leads to buyers remorse) Seriously these guys know what they are doing. Their love of astronomy and good customer service is unforgettable. I would pay 25% above sticker to know that these guys would take care of me. I was skeptical and walked out a believer. Because of the amazing customer service they only have the best customers, and everyone in the store during my purchase was incredibly helpful. 11/10 I wish amazon would stop killing businesses like this because people need to experience the specialized customer service this place offers read more

Simply excellent. We drove down from the valley and Mike spent two hours with us talking through the things to consider about our purchase. Incredibly knowledgeable, not pushy to upsell, if anything he tried to keep us from getting too much 'scope. But ultimately he was happy to sell us what we wanted and even threw in a few useful goodies on the house. Later when we had some trouble with one of the tubes due to our own fault, Mike was on it immediately even while on vacation. I have a 5 year old and 7 year old. Wanted to introduce astronomy to them but I have no idea where to start and how. The staff was very knowledgeable and helpful and they helped us select the perfect telescope for kids. We got home lined up the moon and we were in business. Can't tell you how much it was worthwhile going vs. shopping on amazon and doing with no guidance. I own small business and I support small businesses like this one 100%. If you plan on buying a telescope and returning it after use, do it with amazon don't hurt small businesses. I will be back when kids are ready to move up to next telescope. read more

Amazing service! My Revolution Imager -2 was well out of warranty when the DC input connection broke while it was packed for travel. I contacted Mike Fowler and he said there were no repair places in my area (Milwaukee, WI) and suggested I send it it. I did so and Kenny found the issue (a known one) and repaired it the day after he received it. Next thing I knew I received an email from Mike telling me it shipped. I received it two days later with no charge. I definitely would purchase other things from OC in the future. read more

An absolutely amazing establishment. I bought a Celestron Advanced Vx mount and 8" reflector. I had an issue with the mount and instead of brushing me off to the manufacturer, OC Telescopes came through and replaced the part I needed. They have a wide range of mounts and Telescopes, as well as accessories. They are always helpful and friendly. I can't recommend them enough. If your like me and hate waiting for stuff in the mail, check them out, they may have what you need. They also have some killer deals on used equipment. This is hands down one of the best customer service experiences I've had in a while. Kenny G took his time to explain every intricacy for a novice/hobby layperson like myself and my 4 year old daughter. He was very patient and very knowledgeable and took the time to address all of my concerns and questions and especially the needs I should be aware of for myself and a child new to the hobby. Parking is located in the back of the business and the entrance to it is right next to the store, so try not to miss it. The store is really small and they have their telescope display on the floor and it is really tight and hard to get around. But they have a little of everything on display, so pretty cool. He recommended the most reasonably priced lens for viewing solar eclipses for a specific telescope. Then walked us through the more high end and expensive options explaining the benefits of each one. Big shout out to the guys at Orange County Telescope. I discovered the store last December when thinking about getting into astrophotography, and made a few visits before taking the dive into a potentially expensive hobby. The guys - Mike, Lorenz, and Kai - were all very generous with their time and knowledgeable, no hard sell. When I was finally ready to make a purchase, they advised me away from more expensive options and set me up with an appropriate "starter kit" which would allow me to get the basics down before graduating to more advanced and expensive equipment. I've since been back a couple of times to make minor purchases as I've become more knowledgeable and with each visit they have been very generous with their time and expertise. If you are looking for a store where you will get great guidance from folks who want to help - not to mention a really neat selection of telescopes - this is the place for you. read more
