TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE
Have dined in Oran Mor many times over many years. Nothing was as bad as this last experience, that has inspired me to put pen to paper.
INCORRECT MENUS
They can't give you two matching menus. One menu features venison the other did not. Tried to order the Venison only to be told its not on the menu., when we pointed out that it was on the menu, we were handed another menu without the Venison, (they still advertise this on the website). Fault blamed on "head office".
WINE SELECTION
Tried to order a bottle of wine. Server clueless, could not offer a wine list, could not advise any details of the wines they offered. Type, flavour, grape or alcohol percentage.
Took a stab in the dark for a Sauvignon Blanc at £26. What turned up was a warm bottle hugely overpriced for what you get a warm bottle of Short Mile Bay Wines Sauvignon Blanc, retailed at £8-£9 a bottle. You get charged £26 a bottle. You have no way of knowing what you're getting as you get told "Sauvignon Blanc" or "Pino Grigio" without knowing what brand, grape you are getting - Who knows if its bargain basement stock or a quality Bin, sadly its crap wine at an inflated price.
WINE SERVING
To add further discontent, the wine is taken from an un-chilled room temperature location and sat on ice at your table. You get your wine warm in here. It does not take a Thermochemistry degree to understand that the bottom of the bottle sitting on ice over an hour or so will not chill the wine you will be drinking from the top of the bottle. Lacks basic understanding of wine serving.
SERVING TIMES
The warm wine turns up before the starters that take 45 minutes, had to go chasing the food down to be told with the won't be long" pre-rehearsed phrase. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise as it prevented us ordering a dessert without yet experiencing the full delights of the stomach-churning main course that was yet to come. The restaurant looked about 70% full, God knows how they would have coped with full capacity.
MAIN COURSE
Both "Steak" Burgers as advertised on the menu appeared. Oran Mor will sell you a "Steak" burger and bill you for a steak burger. You will not get a "Steak Burger, you will get something like a processed, pre-formed Farm foods frozen burger, held together with a generous amount of fat and grease. It tastes just as good as an Farmfoods burger and is complimented by dripping grease running out of it as you lift it. Totally disgusting. I have had many Steak Burgers in my life that are made from "Steak" pates the way they should be ; this is false advertising. I've had better quality food and less greasy meat from a kebab shop.
The next wave of the grease assault arrived in the form of the onion ring sides. Again, literally dripping in grease. Can the chef not actually take an extra 10 seconds to allow the cooking fat to be drained before serving or just dab it off?
BILLING
Billing was wrong. Items on the bill were charged at more that the advertised menu prices. Something else that was blamed on "Head Office".
We were also expected to pay an extra 10% charge for the wonderful serving experience of the servers and the chefs, that gets added to the bill. This was obviously objected too.
OVERALL EXPERIENCE
Something has changed at Oran Mor in terms of food quality, pricing, food preparation and server knowledge.
Poor & Slow Service, Poor Wine, Poor Quality Food, Wrong Billing.
Although Credit where credit is due. The 3 tiny bonbon starters tasted ok.
The venue is lovely and always has been., but they now serve less than Weatherspoon quality food at prices that are more aligned to a proper restaurant.
Thankfully we didn't have time to order a third course due to the long delays in between course, as we had a show top catch downstairs. Maybe just as well given the whole experience was going badly, and we had belly's swimming in grease by this point.
All in all, a disappointing experience that left us regretting our booking, feeling sick and feeling somewhat ripped off. read more
