Penstock Lounge - GLAZED THATCHER FARMS PORK BELLY braised cabbage, roasted squash purée, wild mushrooms

That priceless view. Floor to Ceiling windows that give you a view of the Grand River and Elora Gorge while you sipping some cocktails? They also have a bar menu or even some items from the main restaurant you can order from. Penstock Lounge is just a classy place to time out while you are visiting Elora. It is just hard to believe that such impressive and amazing setting is right here in Ontario!

Stone-chiselled steps lead you down to this wonderful room with warm tones and stone walls adding to the ambiance and character of the building. There are dining tables and a piano near the bar, and a private dining room close by, but the nicest feature (to me) is the dining room that's built out from the main structure, sitting right over the Grand River and Elora Gorge. Gorgeous! Get it? JK and I dropped in for lunch on one of our crawls. We chose a table closest to the Tooth of Time (see photo) and waterfall just on the other side of the floor to ceiling windows. We actually switched tables shortly after because the sunlight was so bright. The view of the gorge was just as impressive. We were wandering around the St. Jacobs Farmers Market earlier, munching on stuff, so we weren't too hungry. The lunch menu had quite a few things that sounded good but we decided to share an order of the Glazed Thatcher Farms Pork Belly (braised cabbage, roasted squash purée, wild mushrooms). The presentation was beautiful and it tasted really good! It was cooked perfectly - tender, moist, flavourful. Excellent dish. Their cocktail menu had a lot of interesting concoctions but we chose water and coffee. I know, it sounds boring but we still had a few stops planned on our long way home - all breweries. Yes, I was thinking responsibly! I'll have to come back to sample more of their menu. Our server was recommending their desserts. Next time. I may just have to plan a stay at the hotel so I can go through their cocktail menu. Highly recommended.

One, bars don't run out of glasses. Two, as soon as my friend ordered an ice tea they 'happened to find a glass'. It is terrible service to save glasses for only people who are paying to drink, especially when we bought food anyways so we just wanted something to wash it down with. To top it off, the food here isn't that great, it's pretty hit or miss to say the least. My friends have gotten undercooked pizza before. So I will say unless I'm there to play trivia, I won't I go out of my way to go to brass taps I went back the other day and I honestly was unimpressed yet again. They weren't busy but the service is so slow and we ordered a bunch of appetizers but I was only happy with two of them. I only liked the coconut shrimp and the waffle fries. Otherwise, we had nachos that were scarce on cheese, spinach and artichoke dip that was mediocre at best, and the soft pretzels were bland with not a great sauce. I would recommend avoiding brass taps and going elsewhere on the Guelph campus for food and drink.

I do not recommend the yam soup, and when you get a pitcher of beer.... make sure the glasses are clean! (Ewww lipstick stains!)

I'd been excited to try this new location in Guelph for awhile now. I'm a cocktail lover + gin…read morelover. Based on their Instagram they'd worked out early opening kinks and were displaying some really cool cocktails. We arrived on a Friday night in August around 8pm. Seating upstairs in the restaurant was pretty full but there were one or two tables. We were a group of 5 and the hostess at the door seems VERY flustered. We later agreed that she must have been very new. She sat us in front of their front window (garage door style) that was open. It was a chilly night - like maybe 16 by this point. We asked if she could close the door. She said she would check. 5 minutes later, nothing. She cane back with waters and 1/2 the glasses were dirty. Then a waitress came over and we asked if we wanted drinks but we had not been given menus by hostess...ha so we asked for those. We then again if she could close the garage door and she said no. So we asked if we could be moved somewhere else. We were moved to a table meant for 4 but at least we were warm! We ordered drinks and they arrived very quickly- I was surprised at how quick. We ordered meals too...however, these took over and hour to come out. So that wasn't great- and what we ordered were not complicated (burger, charcuterie, fries...). I tried the Brussels which were just okay - the batter on them was weird. The charcuterie board at $22 was kind of boring g and lacked variety. Then our waiter once it was bill time disappeared. So we flagged down the hostess and she said she would get the machine and out bills....well that never happened. So another waitress walked by and we snagged her and settled up. We decided to head down to the speakeasy to check that out. It was much better. Everything was cheaper (cash only) and it was like chilling in a big basement with lots of old overstuffed couches. It was full when we first went down at 10:30 but within 15 it was nearly empty. Very chill and a good winter hangout. Two tips : cash only and the password changes weekly and is on their Instagram (however we were not asked for it)

My daughter loves their burgers which are made from beef they grind themselves, so you can have it cooked to whichever doneness you want, even rare. I want to give them particular kudos for my visit last night when I showed up at about 9:15 and told them that about 9 of my friends would be joining me. They quickly put some tables together and got me a drink. When my friends started arriving it turned out that there were more like 20 of us. They added more tables and quickly got drinks going. The food took as long as you would expect for a table of 20, not a moment longer. Everyone's food came out at the same time, hot and delicious. I had the grilled halibut which was super fresh and beautifully prepared. Everyone in our party commented positively on the dishes they ordered. That must be an incredibly well-run kitchen. Thanks Gin Mill for a lovely after-event evening. One suggestion: an espresso machine or at least coffee and tea.
