I had been experiencing drastic changes on my right eye in the past few DAYS. I work at a primary…read morecare clinic & have always seen patient being referred out to Dr. Cantu. So I thought my best choice was to go to her practice. I was able to get an app the same day. The front staff were very welcoming and the staff in the back were very professional. Once I had finished with all the exams I was waiting to be seen by Dr. Cantu...I had my door somewhat open and I heard a woman arguing on the phone with someone about a patient and when she hung up she proceeded to vent to the medical assistant. The medical assistant kept trying to let her know about her patient in one of the rooms but she kept on bringing up the person on the phone to the MA. Once she walked in the room the first thing she said was "what are we gonna do with you, hello I'm Dr. Cantu without even acknowledging me (she was the woman on the phone). Basically she did a routine vision test for new glasses, disregarding any of my right eye concerns and when I asked a question I felt as if I was being annoying... she proceeded to say that the glasses I was wearing were nearsighted and that I am now farsighted... she wanted me to check my A1c and glucose and that maybe that could be the cause of my blurry vision... she told me to come back after bloodwork and then she would determine if to give me a new eye script! I was left confused and with more questions... I had a second opinion with a new ophthalmologist and the experience was waaaaaaayyyy different. One thing that stood out to me is that Dr. Cantu said it could be my glucose but the other Dr said if it was due to your sugar levels it would effect both eyes not just one. I understand if your getting government help shes a easy go to but if your paying out of pocket I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you go somewhere else.

I went to their office for the annual eye exam. Memorial Herman recommended the office, and this…read morewas a mistake on their part. I was seen by a man who did not introduce his name or position ( ophthalmologist or technician?). The exam was abbreviated. Then he told me that Dr. Cantu (?) would come and do the assessment. Another man came in with no introduction of what he intended to do. He did the air blowing to measure the ocular pressure) and did the dilation test. He told me my vision did not change and let me drive home without precaution about my blurred vision. Later I received a bill for 290 dollars. After the "adjustments" and insurance payment, I had to pay 67.33 out of pocket. I expected to pay nothing for a routine eye checkup. I felt cheated because I received the care I didn't need; routine eye exam costs only $50 So the office was trying to make money out of my intent, and the service was of poor quality. I would not come back for this kind of business.

I regret choosing to visit Dr. Watkin and sincerely hope the terrible experience I had is one other…read morepatients will never find themselves in. The communication, bedside manner, and level of patient care was absolutely awful - I hope in writing this review, I can warn others who are looking for an ophthalmologist that Dr. Watkins is NOT recommended. The doctor did not even say hello to my greeting or acknowledge me when he entered the patient room. The first thing he did upon entering the room was look at my chart, speak to the tech who was also in the room about the reason I was there and then proceeded to check my eyes on his machine - all without saying one word to me. He never asked me directly what problems I was having or what brought me into his office, instead he communicated with the technician. 9/10 times I asked a question, the technician answered - not the doctor, which was quite worrying in itself. If I had wanted a tech appointment, I would have scheduled an appointment with a tech, not a certified ophthalmologist. My reason to go to this doctor was to get a second opinion on a diagnosis provided by my optometrist. When I asked about a procedure that my optometrist recommended, Dr. Watkins and the tech agreed. However, when I asked Dr. Watkins if he agreed with the reason the optometrist said I needed the procedure, I sensed frustration from Dr. Watkins and he dismissed the reason without giving any feedback. When I further asked about the steroid eye drops my optometrist recommended in addition to the procedure, Dr. Watkins got up, angrily said "an optometrist is not a doctor" and walked out of the room as I was still asking my question!! All the while, the tech remained silent and did not condemn the manner in which Dr. Watkins spoke to me not did he try to reassure me. I asked the technician his opinion on what just happened as I was shocked a medical professional would make a patient feel so small and unimportant to which he replied shortly "The Dr. doesn't agree with your optometrist." It is NEVER acceptable for a medical professional or staff to treat a patient with such little respect simply for disagreeing with another medial opinion. The whole point of getting a second opinion is confirmation for a patient to have confidence in what they are being told. This is the WORST medical experience I have ever encountered. I strongly urge anyone to read past the positive reviews on here and take them with a grain of salt. Do not go here if you want to be treated with respect or feel comfortable. This doctor has no business providing care for patients.

Many mistakes were made by the office staff. First they insisted that they could not take me…read morewithout a referral. After a very long, very tedious phone conversation, my insurance company told me that was not the case. I had to have my insurance company call them and explain otherwise so that I didn't have another fruitless 30 minute debate with the office staff. Then they never mentioned I needed to bring my prescription with me to my first appointment. I had never seen an opthamologist before and didn't know I'd need it for the test I was getting. I was told that I wasn't informed about this as they didn't know I was a new patient and I explained that's something that should have been asked by the (at least) 4 different office staff with whom I spoke on the phone. Amy was very rude to me, raised her voice, and was argumentative even though it was their error. She should have apologized for my inconvenience. Lastly, if you are immune compromised/allergic as I am (or even if you're not), you may want to avoid anyway as there is toxic mold on ALL of the ceiling vents. It's visually quite obvious and the smell is horrendous. One of the staff said it is dirt. Let's say this is the case. Then shouldn't someone wipe it off? It is absolutely filthy. I had a very bad experience at this location. The doctor tried two different prescriptions for me,…read moreand neither one was very good. So I did not want to purchase, I wanted to try another prescription. The manager said that if I wanted to try another prescription, I had to pay for another exam. The doctor gave me the impression that I could not get better correction; she was very pushy and tried to discourage me from trying more prescriptions. So I felt trapped and accepted the contacts (this, I should not have done. I felt very helpless. I should have walked away.) But then, when my spouse went to pick them up, they gave me the wrong prescription! At this point, I lost trust and wanted to go somewhere else. So, I asked for a refund on the lenses. The lenses were unopened and unused. They said they would give me the other set of lenses, but would not give me a refund. In the end I had to go to another doctor, (Look Eye Care) pay out of pocket for another exam, and pay out of pocket for contact lenses (which give me complete correction, which the doctor at MEC said was not possible.) This was very expensive. I went to the Rice Village location for years, and always had good experiences. I only switched to the Oak Forest because my doctor in Rice Village moved away. I sincerely regret ever visiting this location. I am out hundreds of dollars for contact lenses I cannot use.
