I guess the scheduler didn't pay attention why she was being referred and why the original appointment was set to the SW office. The rooms are not spacious enough for wheelchair movement and honestly not friendly for anyone with disabilities as they have to come off and on their wheel chairs. My mother could not complete one of the exams due to not being able to sit in a chair that had wheels, although the assistant tried to do the exam with my mom in the wheelchair. The appointment was at 7:50 am with the assistant doing all the exams, after waiting in a small dark waiting area for over an hour, finally seeing the doctor at exactly 9:06 am in a room that was referred to as the "wheelchair " which was great. Dr Friedrickson was great with my mother. They are a busy office. Referral was receive.

The optical center is inside the doctor office. Martin is awesome! He will be honest with you when your picking out your glasses. He will also adjust your glasses to fit your face. Just overall great customer service and will tell you what you need and really don't need. He is the type that will be honest and not try to sell you something that you don't need. The communication, bedside manner, and level of patient care was absolutely awful - I hope in writing this review, I can warn others who are looking for an ophthalmologist that Dr. Watkins is NOT recommended. The doctor did not even say hello to my greeting or acknowledge me when he entered the patient room. The first thing he did upon entering the room was look at my chart, speak to the tech who was also in the room about the reason I was there and then proceeded to check my eyes on his machine - all without saying one word to me. He never asked me directly what problems I was having or what brought me into his office, instead he communicated with the technician. 9/10 times I asked a question, the technician answered - not the doctor, which was quite worrying in itself. If I had wanted a tech appointment, I would have scheduled an appointment with a tech, not a certified ophthalmologist. My reason to go to this doctor was to get a second opinion on a diagnosis provided by my optometrist. When I asked about a procedure that my optometrist recommended, Dr. Watkins and the tech agreed. However, when I asked Dr. Watkins if he agreed with the reason the optometrist said I needed the procedure, I sensed frustration from Dr. Watkins and he dismissed the reason without giving any feedback. When I further asked about the steroid eye drops my optometrist recommended in addition to the procedure, Dr. Watkins got up, angrily said "an optometrist is not a doctor" and walked out of the room as I was still asking my question!! All the while, the tech remained silent and did not condemn the manner in which Dr. Watkins spoke to me not did he try to reassure me. I asked the technician his opinion on what just happened as I was shocked a medical professional would make a patient feel so small and unimportant to which he replied shortly "The Dr. doesn't agree with your optometrist." It is NEVER acceptable for a medical professional or staff to treat a patient with such little respect simply for disagreeing with another medial opinion. The whole point of getting a second opinion is confirmation for a patient to have confidence in what they are being told. This is the WORST medical experience I have ever encountered. I strongly urge anyone to read past the positive reviews on here and take them with a grain of salt. Do not go here if you want to be treated with respect or feel comfortable. This doctor has no business providing care for patients.

After a very long, very tedious phone conversation, my insurance company told me that was not the case. I had to have my insurance company call them and explain otherwise so that I didn't have another fruitless 30 minute debate with the office staff. Then they never mentioned I needed to bring my prescription with me to my first appointment. I had never seen an opthamologist before and didn't know I'd need it for the test I was getting. I was told that I wasn't informed about this as they didn't know I was a new patient and I explained that's something that should have been asked by the (at least) 4 different office staff with whom I spoke on the phone. Amy was very rude to me, raised her voice, and was argumentative even though it was their error. She should have apologized for my inconvenience. Lastly, if you are immune compromised/allergic as I am (or even if you're not), you may want to avoid anyway as there is toxic mold on ALL of the ceiling vents. It's visually quite obvious and the smell is horrendous. One of the staff said it is dirt. Let's say this is the case. Then shouldn't someone wipe it off? It is absolutely filthy. The doctor gave me the impression that I could not get better correction; she was very pushy and tried to discourage me from trying more prescriptions. So I felt trapped and accepted the contacts (this, I should not have done. I felt very helpless. I should have walked away.) But then, when my spouse went to pick them up, they gave me the wrong prescription! At this point, I lost trust and wanted to go somewhere else. So, I asked for a refund on the lenses. The lenses were unopened and unused. They said they would give me the other set of lenses, but would not give me a refund. In the end I had to go to another doctor, (Look Eye Care) pay out of pocket for another exam, and pay out of pocket for contact lenses (which give me complete correction, which the doctor at MEC said was not possible.) This was very expensive. I went to the Rice Village location for years, and always had good experiences. I only switched to the Oak Forest because my doctor in Rice Village moved away. I sincerely regret ever visiting this location. I am out hundreds of dollars for contact lenses I cannot use.

I have even paid to have my daughter on concierge service plan in past because I trusted Dr Vu so much. After I finally did some research I realized that I could pay optical insurance out of pocket for a minimal fee (my current work provides no medical benefits) so I happily called Look to schedule my appointment. I was told I would pay the $15 co-pay and a $39 back of eye scan (not a required thing at most drs it's optional). I specifically asked if there was a contact fitting fee as I assumed there would be and the person on the phone said no. I drove to the office which is now further from home in the middle of my work day and was told the total was over $100..close to $150 I believe. I questioned the cost and they explained to me there is an $89 contact lens fitting fee. I said well that's odd because I was informed of the total and booked and drove there based on what I was told on the phone $15 and $39. I am not one to make excuses but I had just legitimately double paid my marketplace health insurance (not cheap) the day before and my account was not in great shape because it was before my next payday so I explained this and also that I was not told the right thing. Instead of showing any level of sympathy or concern for me and my circumstances as a long standing patient (and someone who has paid them thousands of dollars over the years), the option given to me? "You need to reschedule"..I walked out frustrated and saddened by my experience but I sat in my car for a moment and decided no, this was not my fault and they should be more accommodating so I went back in after already feeling embarrassed by how I was dealt with. So I opted to use my contact lense allowance to cover the add'l fee meaning I gave up an extra $30-50 for contacts. Fine..I could be seen. This experience didn't feel completely normal probably because of a combination of my embarrassment (bc I am a responsible adult) and the shortness of Dr Vu which was maybe frustration. But I got seen and was put in a higher level prescription bc my eyes are sadly getting worse. So now I start wearing the trial pair and after a couple of weeks, it's just awful despite buying readers that I was instructed to buy. I call back and ask about my options because this one clearly is not working. Well I can be seen again but the fitting fee for multi focals is more so now I need to pay an additional $46 for a new fitting (and I guess pray it works bc every time I go in there seems to be some new fee) and also order the more expensive lenses out of pocket because reminder I used my allowance for the fitting fee the first time. I don't know what has happened..maybe the break in or whatever but if you want to pay high fees because you are wealthier than I, have at it! I'm certain that someone else will treat me with more respect and care because I feel very disheartened by this experience and now I have been treated/made to feel after so many years and faith in the practice.

He has very nice bed-manners too. He is in a new office now, Eye to Eye on 432 W 19th St. and works only on Wednesday. Three days ago, I realized that I had a stye and it was painful. He was fully booked for the coming Wednesday. However, when his assistant told him that I had a painful stye, he made time to see me at noon! He is an awesome person. So he gave me a good treatment and taught me how to prevent it from happening again. I love that he shares his knowledge and explains things well. I highly recommend Dr. Ullman.
