Browsing for books is one of my favorite past times and I could have spent a loooot of time in here. Being a mom to a two year-old I especially love looking for new books for him. I was able to find one of my favorites here-- where the wild things are. We have since read it every single night before bed for the past two weeks. It continues to be a smash hit. I also grabbed him one of the books from the little critter series that I loved as a kid. He really likes that one too. I only had about 15 minutes to look around, so I definitely need to make another trip to dedicated to finding some books for myself, but I was happy to support this local shop by purchasing some classics for my kiddo.

There are large sections devoted to Penguin Classics, Modern Library, NYRB, and so forth, and a good selection of mystery, horror and science fiction novels. But the non-fiction side of the shop is pathetic. The guiding principle seems to be, "we only stock books that will make our readers comfortable. Books that will tell them what they already think they know. Books that won't challenge them. Books that will teach them nothing new." The entire purpose is to offer customers only those world views that they're already in agreement with -- uniformly Leftist, naively "socialist," anti-capitalist, and anti-Western civilization. And, needless to say, there's a heavy emphasis on sentimental Palestinianism. It's a suffocatingly narrow-minded approach. A bookshop should be a place to discover new ideas and new perspectives. Not a place to have one's dated orthodoxies and narrow-minded perspectives confirmed. If you're in search of books that will confirm your biases and comfort you in your prejudices, it's the bookstore for you. If you want to be intellectually challenged, you'd be better off going to Barnes and Noble, which carries a wide range of authors with differing viewpoints. (Yes, a "big chain" bookstore is more indie than the indie competition!) It has wider aisles too, and friendlier and less condescending clerks.

When asked about a book in the vein of another book I've been told she doesn't know, I respect that. When asked if they had a book recently featured on Instagram the response was "I don't run the Instagram just dm them"....as she was actively on her phone and I'm in the store with money to spend. I'm sorry to bother you. When asked "do you have this book, it's scifi I think?" "I don't know" - note I found it on a top shelf about 10 mins later. When asked "I saw a rare ($500) book here last week but I don't see it now, did it sell?" "I don't know, it might be at a book fest so if it doesn't sell it will be here next week" I'm about to buy a pretty expensive book and you can't text the person at the fest to find out? I can pay for it now. Instead I guess I'll buy it online somewhere else. I don't bother shopkeepers when it's busy - these were not busy times. Partners in Crime Bookshop is quickly becoming one of my favorite local stops! I follow Partners in Crime on Instagram, and one of my favorite things about them is how they are always hosting events, there are always author signings, always something going on. They connected with Cozy Girls Inc. for a book bedazzling night that I saw on their social media and was so excited to sign up. It was only $25 and ran from 7pm-9pm, after the store was closed for the day. I thought this was an incredible value for what we got for the night, and they offered 15% off for anyone shopping during the event! I picked up a copy of a book I had been wanting to read to bedazzle for the event. While I went for an event, there are some things I want to highlight that are just about the bookstore/regular shopping experiences! The staff here are always so nice, and I have felt very comfortable asking questions or needing help. I love that this bookstore is romance themed (in part at least) because I never feel any stigma or judgment browsing and shopping here. It's so cozy, and there are SO. MANY. BOOKS! They've done an amazing job carving out little nooks in the store but also having so much space to carry so much! I love that there are also stickers, pins, bookmarks, candles, etc. as well to making shopping even more fun. I love the resurgence of reading and literature appreciation and Partners in Crime has cultivated the best little spot with really reasonably priced books and gifts and I'm so grateful to have them in the community! It's a lovely and bright space and feels very welcoming. If they don't have something you're looking for, they can order it and have it for you quickly, usually within a few days. They encourage discussion and learning, and host wonderful author events, book groups, story times, and much more. Very thoughtful and curated selections at reasonable prices. Excellent customer service and positive vibes all around.

If you're looking for tarot cards, they have all kinds starting at $26. They have the standard ones to Native American cards. They have all kinds of stones that start at $7. I like how they write what each stone is and what it can do for you. I would say all of the stones present were conducive to positive consequences. The person I talked to that worked there was very knowledgeable. She knew a lot about each stone and tarot. She answered all my questions thoroughly. They also do spells! You can do consultations with them for this.
