My husband and I happened to find this bookstore randomly while out shopping. I will say this is not the store for you if you need a Barnes and Noble type experience. Some sections are alphabetized, some not (there is a color-coded guide to which are which). Books also are not priced; the owner uses Abebooks.com to look up the price online (but this led to the surprise of one trade paperback book I brought up being $50! I let that one go...) But if you want to spend hours browsing for new treasures, this is the kind of shop for you. Go in with an adventurous spirit and you will surely find something! Accessibility is rather challenging: aisles are narrow, and a good portion of the store is downstairs, where I had to shuffle sideways with my cane while also trying not to hit my head on the low ceiling. Even on the ground level, shelves stretch very high and books go to the floor. So you may need assistance reaching something. read more

Great used bookstore, cool staff, easy donation. Re the "pricing" complaint, I didn't look before I went, nice guy found it very quickly, said "I'll look up the price..." This book store does not have prices on the books. They "price" the books once you bring them to the register when they look them up online. I've been to hundreds of bookstores and have never been in one that did not individually price their books or indicate a pricing method (like the books by the pound place that was in Evanston). Prices should be figured before a book is placed for sale. It does not matter that this is a non-profit and run by volunteers. Resale and thrift stores price their merchandise, so why does Heirloom books not do this basic business task. Who's to say that they decide to price something more just because they don't like something you say? Or how a customer looks? Again I shop used book stores across the country and have never seen anything like this. read more

I absolutely love this bookstore! It is very convenient in the Edgewater/Rogers Park area to get to and they always seem to have more and different books every time I get in! The staff is really wonderful and I was given a tour the first time I came in! There are two levels to this store with such a variety and everything is sectioned by genre/author/signed copies. A charming and cozy bookstore with a large inventory over two floors. We were greeted upon entering and given a helpful tour of genre locations. The only reason for 4 stars is the overwhelming smell of cigarette smoke. We did not stay long or buy books due to the smoke smell. read more

Huge selection, although it doesn't change often. Not many options of books in other languages. I've visited this bookstore several times and have felt welcomed. However, during my last visit I noticed that the owner was regularly checking up on me, which made me feel uncomfortable. The books have gotten too expensive. For some reading has become a lost art. Others read on their electronic device that is if their new mommy from amazon or ebay lets them. For myself I'm old school. Maybe that's my age talking or personal belief. But reading a physical book allows my imagination to flow better than reading from an electronic device. Coming here to Heirloom last week was a very nice experience. There are 2 levels here with a basement as well but everything is neatly arranged when possible by author and and subject and there are overflow books which can also bring you a book to buy just by browsing the pile. There are also magazines and short stories and of course if you can't find something just ask. The man working last week was very kind and generous. And you can't beat the price. Cash and Cards are accepted; I got 3 books for $11. Although the books on my list were not here I still found 2 sci-fi books and a book in one of the overflow piles that caught my eye.Plus if you can't make it here you can order books on their affiliate bookshop.org/shop/heirloombooks. That way you can shop local and support an independent bookstore that was started by an angel who is now in God's presence and the bookstore is run by volunteers in memory of what she started. Bookstores are a lost art. Chicago is Blessed to have quite a few. Places that hit all the notes get 5 stars. This is one of them. About one block NW of Granville on Clark street. read more

I love coming here - its been a great addition to my dog walks. They're amazing about letting me come in with my two big, extremely excitable dogs. The dogs get love and I get to be warm for a bit and browse as part of my walk! Everyone is super nice and incredibly helpful - I've walked out with something interesting every time. Literally stumbled in here with a couple of friends. We were interested in checking out the new cafe/coffee shop Helix Cafe (which is very cute and comfy). Heirloom books is right next door and has entrances from both Clark street as well as through Helix. This bookstore is the definition of both charming and cozy. It is special. The knowledgeable and welcoming owner told us she opened the place just over 2 years ago but it feels like the type of bookstore that has been around for decades. Large, there is a big basement space, and well organized with several cozy nooks and crannies that are inviting and feel truly relaxing. Let's hope that Heirloom, and Helix, stay around for many years to come and potentially serve as anchor businesses to a retail area that could use a little more life. read more

Chelsea,s Bookstore has been a real treasure and a gift for our entire family and neighborhood. I will continue to use it as a source of gifts for my friends and family. I hope that all of you who are now working in Heirloom will all continue to include Chelsea,s children,s book section and make it more accessible. Our community needs this place. I am an elderly person, and Chelsea for me was a friend, someone who encouraged and lifted up my spirits, and also like a daughter. I am so happy for her success and for her life. My Faith tells me that she is not suffering now, but extremely happy and that someday we will all be together again, sharing in that happiness.
