I found a new book from my to-read list, coveted a cute display of Studio Ghibli merch, smiled at the witty cards, and soon my companions and I amassed a stockpile of items to purchase and so they gave us a nice tote. Maybe next time we'll skip dessert and head straight here (must check hours to see when the bar is open).

The original store on the east side of the mall was downright palatial and included a Starbucks café. The second location facing Old Orchard Rd. was downsized and plainer, but still open and airy. The newest iteration is even smaller. I imagine most customers will focus on the well-curated selection of books and other merchandise, and also the bright lighting. What I observed was a claustrophobic warren of small rooms with low ceilings, minimal seating (I counted 6 chairs and 0 tables), and sadly, no café.

What listings and notices fail to mention is that Amaranth's selection of rare/used books is…read moreinexpensive, in some cases surprisingly so. Thumbing through some mid-19th century curiosity it comes as a shock to discover such a seeming rarity priced at under $5!

Just a quick update on one of my favorite shops in Evanston. While the pandemic and my own…read moreprecaution level has prevented me from taking my weekly trips here to spend a good hour or so digging through all the different bins (you never know what treasures you may find), I will say their social media game is killing it. They're great about posting "Friday flips" on Instagram to show what's new, and posting throughout the week with new books, vinyl, and other items that come in. They're really quite creative with it as well, so it's always entertaining to watch and still get some weekly Squeezebox content virtually. And, they make it super easy and tempting to DM them when you see something you like to have them hold it for you -- I've done that a few times on an impulse when I see something that captures my attention. All the staff here are awesome as well. Highly recommend!

Road the Blue line all the way to where we were supposed to get off. Walked to the store but it was closed. We were there at 11 but the store doesn't open until 11:30. We went walking down the street until it opened up. Found another book store which was really cozy, fun, and cute. Made it back to the store at 11:45. Store was still closed. Went into the record store for a few more minutes to wait. Still no one there. Went all the way back to our hotel and visited a different bookstore and bought stuff there. This newstand limits the number of copies of a newspaper you can buy. He would only sell me three papers. In addition, rather than taking the opportunity to offer his condolences, he choose to utter a smart assed remark about not selling me the copies I needed by saying, "it's tough to be a newstand if we have no newspapers." The fact wouldn't sell me the copies I needed was inconvenient. His callous and smart ass attitude is what will keep me from supporting, what otherwise, would be a business I would normally love to support.
