I had been dealing with knee pain most of my life from a motorcycle accident in the early 1980s. In 2018 my knee pain significantly increased. I decided to seek help. I went to several Orthopedic Doctors 8 in Total Not one Doctor could not seem to find what was causing my knee pain. I even had two surgeries one was knee clean up the other was a screw removal From My ACL surgery in 1987 thinking that would solve my problem. I got very depressed. My job is physical and I also could not enjoy the things I like to do when not woking. I felt like nobody would listen to me I was very frustrated. I decided to go to OPA Ortho I saw Dr Laura Matsen. I told her my story and she listen to me. She ordered an MRI and she review the findings with me. I had no cartilage on the backside of my patella. She told me she doesn't do those types of surgeries But Dr. Toomey does. I went and saw Dr. Toomey and with all the confidence in the world he told me we can fix this with patella femoral joint replacement. He performed the surgery on Sept 8th of 2025. He gave me my life back. He is a ROCKSTAR!!! I am back doing things I like to do. I go to work and not come home in pain anymore. I ride my bike 22 miles and not hurting. I have walked as far as 15,689 steps in one day 6 months after surgery. The doctors at OPA Ortho Listen to me. As far as I am concerned they are truly the best. Dr. Toomys Physician assistant Peter Pang he Is a ROCKSTAR too! They are the best at what they do. Gave me confidence and reassurance thru out the whole Process.Thank you so much for giving me my quality of life back. read more

Dr. Laura Matson Ko Dr. Michael McAdam I am now 10 weeks out from a double surgery: total (anterior) hip replacement and meniscus 'clean-up' (both on my right side). The surgeries were done at the same time, with the winning team of Dr. Laura Matson Ko (hip) and Dr. Michael McAdam (knee). I cannot say enough good things about these two doctors. I feel so much better since the surgeries, and I have my life back thanks to these two doctors. This is my third surgery by Dr. McAdam, and he is not only an excellent surgeon, but he truly cares about me. While this is 'only' my first procedure by Dr. Matson Ko, she, too, is very impressive and caring. While one hopes surgeries are not necessary (I'll likely need at least two more with time), I have no concerns about putting my body and health in these two outstanding professionals. From the first office visits to MyChart communications to the last follow-up appointments, both surgeons and their friendly, efficient and caring staff make what is a difficult and painful experience so much better by these wonderful people. Choosing either of these surgeons for your procedure is one of the best ways to ensure you get the best medical care available in the Seattle area. read more

Dr. Sean Toomey did a total knee replacement for me on December 8th, 2020. Dr. Toomey, his Physician Assistant, John MacDonald, and Administrative Assistant, Rachel Brown are excellent. They work together as a team to provide the best service a patient could ever hope to receive. I choose Dr. Toomey for the following reasons: 1. He is a doctor at the Swedish Orthopedic Institute, 2. He uses the Stryker Mako robotics machine, 3. He only does knees and hips, And 4. He's performed a ton of them! This is what you want in top notch orthopedic surgeon, and Dr. Toomey delivers in spades on all these! He and his team answered all my questions during each of my appointments! Due to Covid-19, we were only able to do day-surgery, which I was a little apprehensive about. But, it turned out to be a non-issue. Using a spinal tap, I had no noxiousness waking up from surgery! Stopped using narcotic pain meds after the first week, and was back to riding my snow bike, outside, at two weeks out! Dr. Toomey is one of the best knee Doctors in the Northwest US! And, it was well worth flying down from Anchorage, Alaska, during the Covid-19 pandemic, to have him perform my total knee replacement! read more

Dr. Sean Toomey is an outstanding orthopedic surgeon, who practices with Orthopedic Physicians Associates (OPA) at the Broadway Joint Facility. Dr. Toomey combines technical excellence with a strong sense of caring for his patients, reflected in his thoughtful & detailed diagnosis, his adoption of the latest & best equipment & technique, & in his care in choosing & supervising his immediate assistant & nurse. Dr. Toomey performed a partial knee replacement on my left knee using the MAKO robotic aid. My recovery took about 1/2 as long & involved significantly less stress on my aged body (87 yrs. & counting) than a total knee replacement. My knee now feels much like the other knee. I've seen 3 other orthopedic surgeons (2 involving my left knee) & they do not come close to Dr. Toomey. While Dr. Toomey may not have extended my life, he certainly made the latter years more active & pain free. OPA was also most professional, & its' well planned patient education, recovery & rehabilitation programs made a potentially stressful, painful event, if not exactly "a walk in the park" much less stressful & painful than I feared. BRAVO Dr. Toomey & Seattle OPA! Hargrave G. - Sequim, WA read more

This review is for Dr. Sean Toomey. One year ago I had an anterior hip replacement. Following the surgery, I had no pain and was able to resume normal activities within the month. My quality of life improved tremendously as I had no pain and no longer limped. I am now 8 weeks post-op total knee replacement due to an old injury. Although knee replacements are more complicated and painful, I am fully resuming all activities, and hope to do more as I continue to heal. I have been off all pain medications for 3 weeks. Dr Toomey is a highly skilled surgeon and I am thrilled that I chose him to do these surgeries. I didn't want or need a surgeon with a good "bedside manner" because I was looking for surgical skill, not personality. It turned out that Dr. Toomey was very pleasant and caring as well as being an excellent surgeon. I wish this site would separate categories-this business receives low scores due to people answering telephones rudely? This was not helpful in my search for a good surgeon. I found the office staff competent but comments here were distracting in looking for skilled medical professionals. read more

Dr. Sean Toomey did a complete hip replacement in Nov. 2015 and 4 months later I am still surprised at how well everything went. From the initial visit where I was briefed on the options I had, the preparation that would be necessary and the process that would be followed, to the few weeks of recovery after, I was very well prepared. All staff were very helpful but Dr. Toomey took as much time as I felt was needed to help me understand the entire process. His attention to what I had to say and what questions I might have were greatly appreciated and it was obvious that he cared for each and every patient that he met. The first 2 weeks were the hardest but with "home care" consultants and physical therapy at my home, they went by quickly and with minimal discomfort. I was back at the fitness club within 4 weeks, walking several miles a day! I sincerely wished I had this procedure done many years before. I would definitely recommend Dr. Sean Toomey to anyone requiring a hip replacement procedure and would go to him again if necessary! Thankyou. Kathie read more

Dr. Matsen Ko was referred to me by a very dear friend who also had his hip replaced. When I first met Dr Laura I appreciated her honesty, bluntness and took the time and had the patience to answer all my questions - ridiculous and sincere ones! I needed to have a full replacement due to arthritis. I felt VERY comfortable the day of surgery and confident that I was in good hands. I'm an active 46 year old and this was my first surgery - ever. Her entire team made me feel comfortable and at ease. Every person I have met on her team from lovely Rhianna to the guy who gave me my anesthetic - were very kind and genuine. She takes her job very seriously and is damn good at what she does. I love my scar and SOOOO impressed with her work and efficiency. May be crazy to love a scar, but hey, I'm bionic now and her work is flawless. I'm 3 months post surgery with no pain! Prior to surgery - the pain was daily. If you're searching for an ortho surgeon, don't look any further than Dr. Matsen Ko and her team! If I could give more stars, I would!! read more

My husband underwent a left knee total replacement by Dr. Sean Toomey last May. I am a nurse practitioner in practice for many years and have had extensive experience with physicians both in primary care and specialty services. My husband received outstanding cares from Dr. Toomey and his excellent staff. My husband has had an excellent clinical outcome from his total knee replacement. In addition to being technically an outstanding surgeon, he is kind and attentive to all details including really focusing on personal communication with my husband and me. He anticipates potential problems and addresses them; his teaching and explanations are excellent and geared right toward us. The Registered Nurse, Bonnie, working with Dr. Toomey, is absolutely outstanding in her personal communication, clinical expertise and knowledge, and the fact we always knew she was there and would promptly respond to any problem we might have. Dr. Sean Toomey and the Registered Nurse working with him, Bonnie, have our highest recommendation. read more

About one year ago, I was referred to Sean Toomey, M.D. by my Physical Therapist. Both hips were worn and needed to be done sooner rather than later. I had been persevering for quite some time. My walks were no longer enjoyable, bending and doing every day activities painful. My first was done in Jan 2017, the second in July. Amazing experience. Walking same day, with both. I am a very active person, so getting my hips back has been the best gift I could have received. Dr. Toomey was direct, explaining what the surgery would entail and that homework was needed on my part. I worked out at P.T before the surgery and followed all the exercises given. The team was warm, kind and available for any questions I had before and after. I can not say anything but thank you for everything and my new great hips. My four month checks have gone very well. For me you are the best. Anyone I know that has been a patient at OPA have been very pleased. Thanks to your assistant John Mac Donald 111 PAC. Great nursing staff. Carol Edgar read more

I knew I had the right clinic, Orthopedic Physician Associates has a stellar reputation on the West coast, what I didn't know was, who my surgeon would be, I was completely blessed to have Dr. Brian Mayeda dedicate his skill and professionalism to my need of a new hip. Two months prior to my surgery I prayed I would be able to walk my daughter down the aisle in her wedding without limping. Two weeks prior I just wanted to get down the aisle without a cane. After a difficult and rarely performed method of replacing my hip, and after 90 minutes of waking from anesthesia I was in a car being driven home. I had a phenomenal recovery and within a month I walked my daughter down the aisle (on the sand in Mexico) without a misstep or any pain. Dr. Mayeda gave me a huge gift to enjoy one of the greatest highlights of life because of his excellence, training and skill, I will always be grateful to him for this gift. From a guy that doesn't review, I give the strongest recommendation I can to Dr. Mayeda and his team read more

If anyone is in need of a whole or partial knee replacement there is one surgeon you should go to and that is Dr. Sean Toomey. In May of 2016 he did a partial knee replacement on my right knee. Two previous surgeons said I needed a full knee replacement but Dr. Sean Toomey recommended a less invasive procedure (partial knee replacement) that allowed me to keep my original ligaments. Dr. Toomey's professionalism and knowledge is outstanding. He made sure I understood everything that was going to happen and constantly wanted to know if I had any other questions. I also would be remiss if I didn't mention his Nurse Elise and PA John MacDonald (JC). Every time I called before and after my surgery Elise was there to answer any questions or take care of anything that came up. JC was as professional as Dr. Toomey was and so helpful in my follow up appointments. This is a Five Star trio! I highly recommend Dr. Toomey and his staff! Kevin S. read more

My wife needed her left knee replaced and we found Dr. Sean Toomey after doing our research. From her first appointment all the way through her surgery he made her feel like she was the most important patient he has ever had. He totally explained to us what she could expect from the day of her surgery through her recovery and physical therapy. He and his staff were amazing to work with and my wife has gone from having pre-surgery severe discomfort just riding in the car to now doing anything she wants, 100% pain free, The office staff was very friendly and a big "Thank You" to his RN O.N.C. Bonnie Bicket. She was very helpful whenever we called and ALWAYS called us right back to answer any question we had and was willing to do whatever it took to make my wife comfortable. As I read in another review I can't say enough good things about our experience with Dr. Toomey and his entire team. We would recommend him without any reservation 100% read more

My left knee has been compromised for years and got to the point where each and every step was beyond painful. I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Laura Matson Ko to evaluate a total knee replacement. My surgery was April 8th and 15 days post surgery I am beyond grateful. Dr. Matson Ko, is the consummate professional in her bedside manner, taking the to explain to me what I would be experiencing and what options were best for me. This is important but her skill as a surgeon is incredible and in my opinion off the charts. I do come from a medical background so I have some perspective. I have also had 3 previous knee surgeries. That added to the complexity of the procedure, yet I have had less pain than before surgery and the freedom with which I can walk now is beyond anything I would have imagined. I highly recommend Dr. Matson Ko and her team. read more

Dr. Laura Matsen Ko! I knew about 20 years ago that I would need a hip replacement someday. As a physical therapist with experience in the rehabilitation of joint replacement patients, I have been able to work with orthopedic physicians and see how they treat these patients, what they recommend for them, and how these patients feel about them. I could have selected many for my own hip replacement, but I chose her because I really appreciate how she chooses to treat her patients' issues conservatively first (physical therapy!) and each patient of hers that I have treated loves her. Also, I knew I only wanted the anterior approach for hip replacement, and that is her specialty. It has been four weeks since my surgery and I couldn't be more pleased with my hip, and the whole process. Thank you, Dr. Matsen Ko! read more

I had a great experience with a total hip replacement done by Dr. Sean Toomey in June 2014. I am at the end of the recovery period, and the surgery has made a huge difference in my life. I am able to be a lot more active than I was before the surgery, and am pain-free. I have taken advantage of the ability to get more exercise to lose about 50 pounds, and feel great. Dr. Toomey was patient in his explanation of the procedure and suggested recovery plan, and pleasant to deal with. His staff was kind and considerate in all things, and flexible in making arrangements for the surgery and follow-up visits for this Alaskan patient. Don't do this kind of major surgery for fun, but this was the best experience i have had with an orthopedist. I would recommend him without reservation to a friend. read more

One month ago I had my left knee replaced by Dr. Sean Toomey. I had my right knee replaced at another facility by another Doctor last year. The two experiences were like night and day, it was hard to believe that it was the same surgical procedure. My in-hospital stay: 1 night vs 5 nights, my use of a walker post-op: 1 week vs 6 weeks, no post-op swelling and excellent pain control. I am now driving my car, walking my dog (short walks), taking care of my yard and house (I live by myself) and cooking all my meals. Life is almost back to normal. I cannot thank Dr. Toomey enough for his expertise, prompt and caring attention to my needs, and the amazing progress that I continue to make. I am told that each Doctor has their own approach - this one certainly worked for me! read more

I saw Dr. Jeff Garr and Dr. Elizabeth Garr last year for a lower back pain. I was dragging my left foot because my whole left leg was numb and it hurts to walk and it hurts to stand for longer than 10 minutes...basically I just get comfortable to sit down. Went to ER at Swedish and recommended Dr. Garr to me. He has excellent bedside manner and suggested for me to get a epidural injection while I'm trying to make up my mind to have spine surgery done. So I saw Dr. Elizabeth Garr, she is excellent as well and easy to talk to. Over all, I was satisfied with the care I've gotten. I'm recommending them to my friends and or relatives that may need surgery in the future. read more

I've seen several doctors for different parts of my body and each one has been excellent. The level of care is beyond anything that you will find within a large hospital system. I had chronic shoulder pain for about 15 years until I received an injection from Dr. Wilcox directly into the joint. The needle was scary long, but I didn't feel a thing. I had a European backpacking trip scheduled within 2 months of the injection and I was able to haul my heavy backpack around country to country enjoying the sites without being in pain. I used to think I had to live with pain, but thanks to the doctors at OPA, I can just live! read more

When something goes wrong with your shoulder and neck (me), your wrist (my son), or your patella (my daughter), this practice is the place to go! We are all three patients of Dr. Holland's and we are in good hands. OPA is a busy, well-established group that provides the best service from the start! Everyone is friendly, the place is efficient and the physician care is top notch. I've had a few MRI's here and the scheduling process was easy. You don't have to see all the work they have to do behind the scenes like insurance authorizations. They help you focus on getting better quickly! read more
