Mr. Hale has shown a shocking lack of supervision of the resident doctors under his management. Despite numerous falsehoods written by the podiatrist Drew Bekins - he approved and signed off on the care - the assessment of which should have been obviously false by the time it reached Hale. Despite providers claiming they were "awaiting culture results" neither Hale nor Bekins informed myself, the patient of the positive result. Furthermore providers at Swedish failed to note the positive result for staph in my toe for 6 weeks. This led to Sepsis and an amputation - despite clear signs of infection such as the positive test - the loss of toenails - swelling and redness all the way to near the knee and the development of gangrene. Despite the initial worries that my toe and limbs could be at risk providers including Hale (who was charged with not only educating Bekins but supervising his work) - did not read even the most pressing of the labs - the initial wound culture. Furthermore even the date on the lab revealed that Hale's student had not taken the culture on the date he claimed. Mr. Hale's refusal to explain his actions despite repeated requests from myself speaks volumes. Swedish in general relies on oral passdowns and team-notes - with providers rarely if ever willing to simply log on to a computer to check labs, charts, and notes - this can cause serious problems - especially if a culture has been resulted in between E.R. visits or merely as we learned as children in the "telephone game" where students line up in a row and whisper a story to the student behind them in the line -- by the end of the line the resemblance to the original story has been completely altered. Swedish Podiatry wrote of things that were not remotely true - claiming such absurdities as that I wore a "left foot orthotic device" -- device? what are they talking about? Bekins wrote 3 ficitional consultations - for consults that in the first case - he did not do and was trying to cover up for an absence - the final 2 fictional consult notes were perhaps due to either his embarrasment at having misdiagnosed me (nearly leading to death from Sepsis) or his embarrassment that I refused to be seen by him (a request that was ignored while I was unconsciousess and the amputation took place) -- so much for respecting a patient's wish not to be seen by a provider that the patient finds dishonest and incompetent. Swedish Medical Center - with such incompetent supervisors as Douglas Hale is extremely reckless and dangerous - and in my case they even provided false information - when they told me that "all labs looked good" and that "infection had been ruled out" despite the positive staph result and their Clinical Review claiming they knew about the infection the entire time. Their Clinical Review even identified Hale as the lead provider on the original admission contradicting Hale's statements that he has no idea who I am. Its bizarre and troubling - -but its not really about me - its about you, dear Reader, and the current and future patients that may suffer catastrophic injuries or even death as a result of providers, such as Hale, not reading labs, charts, or notes and not properly supervising residents in their care. Several years ago I suffered an almost complete disarticulation of my right forefoot following a steroid injection using the wrong medication. "Correction" required extensive surgery by a very skilled foot orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Hale was highly recommended by this team to oversee my nails etc. post-op. I don't doubt the skill or expertise of Dr. Hale, but I will not return to him due to his poor bedside manner! My visit went something like this: Dr. Hale rushes in treatment room, does not introduce himself. As he's flipping through my referral note he is asking me questions. He answers his own questions before he gives me a chance. He then barks out orders for me to "stand, turn, turn, turn" but he does manage to squeeze a forced "please" in. It was almost comical, all I could think was that this man seriously needs a day off! At one point I heard him outside the room arguing with his staff. As far as the staff, I will say they were great! The female at the front desk was polite, organized, efficient. The medical assistant was friendly and very helpful. Dr. Hale is meticulous and precise. He is very experienced and also listens to patients concerns. If you have any questions, be sure to tell him and he will give you the floor. I went to him as a second opinion after going to a consultation with a surgeon who refused to answer basic questions. I was so glad I got a second opinion and I couldn't have been happier with Dr. Hale who performed my ankle surgery. I had to take off a couple stars due to office staff issues, but Dr. Hale is so great I'm still a fan. His medical billing clerk Lisa is dishonest. Several times she has lied to me about things, later her lies become apparent. She is stubborn and pushy beyond what is an acceptable professional manner. I end most sentences to her "I don't know what to tell you." It's her way or the highway and she will lie if she thinks it will get her way. Also MA doesn't always return phone calls (or apparently get all her voicemails) and is very hasty and short with people. Two front desk people are inconsistent. One receptionist is not helpful, for instance she will not let you get in to see the Dr. if it is an emergency, the other more experienced one will find a way to squeeze you in. read more

Dr. Hale is a fantastic podiatrist. My wife had a very mysterious issue in her toe -- after starting with a different doctor who was not able to handle the complexity of her case, I did some research to identify the best podiatrist in Seattle, and it pointed to Dr. Hale. We were not disappointed -- he is extremely good at what he does. A couple other reviews complained about his bedside manner, but I really like it. He is direct and to the point -- I felt like he spoke to us almost as if we were other doctors on the case. I have seen Dr. Hale twice. As some others have said, I have no doubt he knows his craft. What he doesn't have is bedside manner, or even proper manners that one brings to human interactions. I will not go back to him. It was such a frustrating experience. He shows no caring or compassion. I had to ask the same questions multiple times and in different ways to get him to answer them. He didn't seem to remember me or my foot issues in between my two visits (three weeks apart) and told me many of the same things on visit 2 that he had on visit 1. I had a persistent pain in the heel of my right foot - sometimes to the point of not being able to walk and it impacted my sleep. I chose Doctor Hale, because of my husband's high recommendation of him (Hale had helped him with a foot issue that he had many failed attempts at fixing with other doctors). Doctor Hale is ridiculously knowledgeable and was able to quickly diagnose the issue AND provide an alternative to surgery. I chose to go with the alternative and have been pain free and mobile for over a year now. Doctor Hale's bedside manners were just fine; however, I don't need a lot of hand-holding. I thought Hale was incredibly kind, funny and wicked smart. So, when you are in pain and cannot seem to find a solution to your foot/ankle problem, I would rather have an expert full of solutions than someone patting your hand and providing you advice that doesn't work. I am not going to lie this was probably one of the best doctor visits I have ever been to. I had an ingrown toenail that I tried to self treat, but finally broke down and decided to get it taken care of. Dr. Hale was one of the coolest and nicest doctors I have ever had. I am a runner, and was experiencing some pretty significant heel pain. Since I have Group Health insurance, I was able to pick a podiatrist from their list, and receive a referral to see the doctor of my choice. After doing some reseach, I came across the website for Dr. Hale and decided he looked very well qualified, and the site made him sound very knowledgeable and caring. Well, I learned that you can be triple board certified and know your stuff, but that definitley does NOT make you a good doctor. I am still hoping he was just having a bad day, or a rushed morning, but he was fairly cold to me from the very beginning, was very brusk, and it was completely obvious that he wanted to tell me what my problem was, suggest ways to fix it, and then shuffle me out the door. He diagnosed probably plantar fasciitis, which is what I had expected, and I know there' s no miracle cure. He suggested all the things my research on the internet already had, which I also expected, but it would have been nice to have an acutal conversation about how to go about treatment. All my questions were answered in basic one- or- two-word answers. I had taken two different pairs of my running shoes, and regular shoes in which I wear custom orthotics, hoping to have a discussion with him about what would be best for my feet to be running in, and whether or not I should be running with my custom inserts or not. I left feeling like I didn't know any more than when I went in. He suggested a night splint (which has actually been helping I think), but when the gal brought it in, she didn't even bother to take it out of the box, show me how to put it on, nothing. Granted, it is pretty basic, and pretty self-explanatory, but I felt like she just threw it at me, and wanted to shuffle me out. For having been physically in their office for over an hour, I probably saw the doctor for about 5 minutes. As a runner, I was really frustrated about my problem, and was made to feel like it didn't really matter. I'm all for being expedient and getting people in and out, but that shouldn't mean rushing through an appointment for someone who has valid questions, and came well-prepared to discuss the problems they were experiencing. On a side note, I just read 2 shining reviews for the other doctor in this office, Dr. Lawrence Huppin...I'm wishing he would have been on my list to choose from. read more

I went to Dr. Hale for a very painful ingrown nail caused by an injury. He really couldn't care less about it and was more concerned about selling me expensive custom-made insoles. So much so that he forgot to treat my toe. When I reminded him, he butchered the toe nail on the wrong foot. He realized his mistake and went to work on the other foot, without numbing the area. When I complained, he told me it was almost over and to just bear it. The insoles are ok but I wouldn't go back to him. read more

I wanted him to evaluate my right-foot arthritis and large bunion. I went in the 1st time and he said he wanted x-rays. So, on my 2nd visit, after giving him x-ray results, he said he needed a dexa scan. So, on my 3rd visit, I gave him results from a dexa scan...and he said he then needed a CT scan. So, I had that done, gave it to him on my 4th visit and he said he needed an MRI. Sooooo (I'm not making this up) on my 5th visit he told me he needed ANOTHER CT scan and, that's when I decided I'd had enough! In that time, he didn't offer any relief from the extensive pain I'd been experiencing...no orthotics, no steroid shot, no PT...nothing. Saw Dr Hale after breaking a foot bone in October 2012. He's very businesslike- explained my options for treatment clearly. I opted for surgery. It went well AND I had no post-surgery pain. I chose this clinic because of their approach of treating problems non-surgically if at all possible. I had a Morton's neuroma that I had been suffering with for about three years. Although they diligently tried, the non-surgical approaches did not work with me. I had the neuroma surgery, and was up and hiking again in a couple of months. I should have done it years before. At pre-op, I knew I was in good hands when the attending doctor told me Dr. Hale had scheduled three hours for the operation because he is a perfectionist. As I got to know Dr. Hale throughout my recovery, I appareciated his knowledge, compassion, and the time he took to answer questions.
