All seating is blocked off due to COVID, which was absolutely fine, but the staff was not overwhelmingly welcoming. I tried their signature VT Big Easy, but ended up pouring my $5 coffee on the grass after two sips. Tastes a bit like cheese mixed into coffee. Favorite coffee place in Burlington. If you are looking for a super smooth latte in a posh environment this is it. Don't let the fancy coffee hipster atmosphere fool you though, the people and crew here are super friendly and they really know their stuff. They list the different notes of the coffee and espresso's they have (it changes every so often) to better assist you in your cafe choice- sorta like how wineries lost the flavor notes. I got the cappuccino and the iced coffee - super smooth. The cappuccino wasn't too heavy on milk and had a great amount of energy in it. It was really great. The iced coffee was also perfection, it was chocolatey/ nutty and had a bold flavor but in a smooth rich way. If you've ever had la colombe or Blue bottle coffee it was similar in that way- you could taste it was brewed with some craftsmanship. A+ all around. Also the ambiance is super cool and they have art work around the place. It would be a good place to hang, catch up, or get some work done. read more

I am taking off one star because they advertise themselves as coffee tasting bar but they did not have any tastings and we were very disappointed, considering we are coffee snobs and were looking forward to it! But full points for being an actual coffee brewing place! The baristas know the technique and science of brewing coffee. They weigh the beans and the ground coffee before making every single cup. We bought few bags of their fresh coffee beans. We ordered maple latte and a normal latte and it was one of the best cups of coffee I have ever had. I hate sweet coffee and I don't use any sugar in my coffee but the maple latte was so flavorful and maple flavor did not overpower the taste of coffee. We chatted with the barista and he gave us tips on brewing better coffee. Also, they don't roast their own beans but get it from a local place. Must try place for all coffee lovers! If you are a Starbucks lover who likes those sugary fancy so-called-coffees, this is not the place for you. Only for people who know what real coffee is! read more

This neat little shop is almost hard to find; it shares the same address as the larger office building next door, so make sure you look to the right of that building to find it. :-) I came in to meet some local other female small business owners and I decided for the first time in a long time, to order a specialty coffee (decaf is a must). I rarely drink coffee because its caffeinated effects can wreak a bit of havoc on my system. In other words, I love the smell and taste of coffee more than it loves me. I opted for a decaf Maple latte and it was divine. You could taste the fresh roast and it had a delectable hint of maple. It was of course creamy, being a latte. It was simply perfection. So, how did it effect me later in the day? No worries at all. I was just a bit peppier than usual (which is not really necessary, LOL). The pastries offered looked really good, too, for those who like a double jolt of caffeine and sugar. The ambiance of the place is chill and cozy. I've had the best coffee I've ever had here. They know their coffee and how to work with it. Very knowledgeable about the delicate flavors coffee offers and I came across what I call a hidden gem. To the right of their coffee board was a special. The cinnamon note caught my eye and I ordered it without hesitation. I took a sip and got a nice malty, milky note and then this beautiful cinnamon profile came through the back. I was hooked. I have never sipped a coffee so slowly to enjoy every sip. Sometimes, you don't need anymore caffeine because you already drank way too much caffeine it was bad caffeine you know like the kind hotels serve with bad breakfasts but you were trying to wake up and my goodness you did a damn good job of that so good infact that on the drive over to downtown you couldn't shut up you just kept talking and talking to your wife who patiently put up with you. She wants to go to a cafe and you're like okay but I can't have more of the jitter juice or I swear my eyeballs are going to pop out of their eyelid-peeled sockets so you go into this place you found on Yelp and you're looking over the menu and sure there are teas but you're not really into that either too hot you've burned your tongue on tea too often you need something else oh look, something simple, just frothed milk and Vermont maple syrup that sounds lovely. And it is. And you try your wife's oat milk latte and remark about how funny it is that oak milk ended up owning the market on alternative milks and how soy and almond just don't cut it and then all of a sudden there you are talking too much again, but that's okay, your drink isn't caffeinated and you'll come down soon, you're sure. read more

We googled Jason Gonzalez and found that he won multiple coffee awards! Recommended by a friend, we arrived to find great service and a great selection of coffees and teas. The walls are decorated with fun colorful artwork: some pieces looked very Lichtenstein-esque. We ordered a Maple Latte and the Buttery Toasted Walnut David Munoz latte for the first visit. I found the Maple Latte a little too sweet but the Buttery Toasted walnut was amazing! It was buttery, nutty, rich and had a depth of flavors. A lovely space to enjoy fine coffee with an extensive menu of custom flavors that we've never found elsewhere. The space was filled with fun artwork and movie references. The music is quite for conversations. We tried the Maple Latte and a Buttery Toasted Walnut Latte. The Maple latte is sweet, smooth and velvetty. It smelled wonderful like flowers. This isn't the best coffee shop in Burlington. It's not the best coffee shop in Vermont. Onyx Tonics is, by my estimation, the best coffee shop in the USA. They have absolutely killer hand brewed coffee where you can easily pick out the promised tasting notes on the board. The baristas working here are not only super efficient and expert brewers of said coffee, but also crazy friendly and just as excited about their coffee as the fiends who walk through their doors in the morning jonesing for a cup. I have sat and listened as they pulled shot after shot of espresso for each other, making small changes each time, just to hone in on the perfect espresso for customers. They have consistently recommended the perfect coffee for my wife and I and shared our excitement when we took that first glorious sip. If you love coffee like I know you do, DO NOT MISS this place when you come to Burlington. read more

Dining/drinking rule #1: give them time to get it together. A month is safe. Rules were meant to be broken. Correction: transcended. Jason Gonzalez, for me, is one of the best best best of the region's baristas. That's quite an achievement, because, as a group, these people take their work seriously. It's not something they're doing while they're trying to do something else: it's their calling, their passion (yes, Kim @ Scout I'm talking about you). I've been a fan of Jason since his Bluebird kiosk days. Sad that it's not going to be his place? Not at all. Instead, we get what one might think Burlington needs the least: yet another thoughtfully styled cafe, surfing that line between cool and arch. Nope. Jason's on to something else. Single origin (meaning, one bean, not a blend) roasted gently. A few carefully chosen options covering a range of flavor profiles. Constantly changing, which means, visit early and often. Meanwhile, back to my argument that you want to go there NOW. Jason is a hugely accomplished barista. That means, yes, he pulls a perfect shot (aka the God shot). He can do latte art worthy of the Sistine Chapel (imagine God handing Adam a Cortado). It's that good. He can do it while engaging in truly witty banter. He's not an ascetic monk. Ultimately, it's about the bean and about the pleasure it brings. You can get coffee alllll over downtown Burlington. National and regional chains, other one-offs. They're all trying (well, some, not so much), and there are some really cool people involved. I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings, but I take my pleasure (coffee, in particular) quite seriously. Jason and Onyx have no rivals in the center of downtown and I'm sorry to say that as there are plenty of nice, hard-working folk. Okay, honorable mention for the unlikely success to be had at Juniper in Hotel Vermont: really good. Incredibly good for hotel coffee. They may not know it, but Jason and his wife Tiffany have a kindred: Soon at NYC's Pennylane. It's the same warm, serene design sense. The concentrated focus on the bean. Meanwhile, with Scout (go Tom and Andy!), Maglianero, Brio (of course), and some other spots, the coffee scene in the BTV is buzzing, burgeoning. It's a great time to be alive. read more

I'm on the search for the best cold brew coffee in Vermont, and while the coffee didn't blow me away, the atmosphere was great. The tray of fresh donuts and pastries was tempting (and incredible looking!) but I passed on those. I did, however, snag a sunflower cookie (only $1!) that was just sweet enough without overwhelming me. I took my coffee and cookie to go, but only due to a lack of time; I would have loved to sit and stay. The reason I'm at 4 stars instead of 5 is because of how hard it was to find! Their Google maps location must not be accurate because the GPS brought my somewhere other than their front door. Speaking of their entrance, the signage is lacking. The rating is driven off the products and availability. - largest coffee cup was a 12oz, feels like a small to me - tons of fancy coffee types if you want gourmet, we were just looking for coffee - another significant limitation was milk type, there were 3 options: whole milk, oat milk, and half-n-half. It's been 15years since I was last in Burlington. Stopped in as we were walking down the street. (I'm a 7.8 on the coffee/espresso geek scale) the menu on the wall through me for a loop and as we spoke to the masked dude, I made a very novice baffooneristic comment. Without pretense he laughed, we laughed, everyone laughed it off and he explained the nuance of the menu. I ordered a funky light roast and my wife an espresso soda floral concoction; both mind blowing! Grabbed my Sunday cuppa Joe here based on all the rave reviews. The are limiting entry to 5 people in the store at a time to maintain social distancing. Tried a couple of their specials - the hot maple latte which was delicious and another special (can't remember the name) with maple and chicory which I had iced. That one unfortunately was too overbearing on the chicory and made me wish I had got the maple latte instead. One of my favorite oh-so-touristy things to do when visiting Vermont is to get the maple flavored things on the menu anywhere we go. Most of my experiences with maple lattes have been pretty bad but they nailed it here! The espresso drinks we got were awesome, the staff clearly knows what they are doing. Clean and chic coffee place right in the middle of Burlington. Went for the maple latte as its my metric to judge a place. Pretty decent, certainly not the greatest out there but at least they used maple syrup (fist bump). My major complaint with the latte was the espresso was really hard to place...all I tasted was the milk and syrup. That being said I feel I would have to give it another shot given the rave reviews.
