Ono Hawaiian BBQ's plate style food is pretty damn good. Way better than L&L Hawaiian. - it's pricy but the portions are very large. I think one plate could be shared. - love the fact they have serve yourself Hawaiian sauce. - located in Escondido's homeless and red light district. But they do have a drive thru if you don't want to leave your car. - Recommended to try. read more

Stopped by for lunch on a weekday. Since it's relatively new to the area, it's spacious, clean, and has plenty of seating. I ordered two plates: the Chicken Katsu and the Fire Chicken. Each plate comes with your choice of three sides: rice, macaroni salad, or steamed vegetables. The portions were generous as I had enough left over for another meal. The katsu was nice and crispy, and the fire chicken was generously coated in their signature sauce. The steamed vegetables were mostly cabbage, with only a couple pieces of broccoli. I'm not sure if that's how the side is normally served, but overall everything tasted just as good as I remembered. One thing I noticed was that the food took a while to come out, which was the same experience I had at another location. That said, the employees were incredibly friendly and happy to answer my questions. They even gave me a small plastic bag for my self-serve katsu sauce so it wouldn't leak inside my takeout bag. It was a small gesture, but I really appreciated it since spilled sauce is one of my biggest pet peeves. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal and will definitely keep Ono Hawaiian BBQ in mind whenever I'm craving hawaiian food. read more

We stopped in for lunch, and even during the lunch rush, the staff was friendly and the service was fast. The place was clean as were the tables. The food was fresh, flavorful, and the veggies were surprisingly good. I ordered the chicken and beef combo. The chicken was really good...tender, juicy, and full of flavor. The beef, however, was a bit too chewy for my taste, so I probably wouldn't order that again. I also took a chicken katsu meal to go for my kiddo, and they absolutely loved it! Overall, it was a great experience with quick service and tasty food. I'd definitely come back and just stick with the chicken next time. read more

I tried this place for the first time and very happy I did. The food was delicious, excellent quality and the portions are huge. I ordered the chicken and beef combo. You can customize the sides, I chose no mac salad, one scoop rice and extra veggies. You can also get sauces on the side. The service was great, and very clean inside. We placed out order online and it was ready upon arrival. I highly recommend giving this place a try. read more

I'm so happy that we have a location in Esco now! Previously the closest location was in Lake Elsinore, so we didn't get to eat it very often. I always get orders to go, so ordering on the app makes it easier. It also cuts down your wait time if you're not eating there anyway. My Mom's favorite is the fried fish and shrimp, so I usually get the Seafood Mix Plate. It's fried fish, fried shrimp, and bbq chicken. It's enough food for us to share, and maybe have a little left. We also swap out one of the rice for another macaroni salad. Be aware that their mac salad isn't vegetarian because it contains tuna. It also comes with steamed vegetables, usually broccoli and cabbage. I like that they have self-service katsu and teriyaki sauces that you can fill containers to use with your meal. All in all, a pretty easy pickup food experience. read more

This place is great. The food is fresh, the portions are huge, everything tasted delicious. We ordered the chicken katsu and and chicken and beef combo. It was very flavorful and tender, the chicken katsu was crispy. Their Mac salad was awesome, I requested a second scoop of it. The inside was very clean, the service was quick and friendly. I am looking forward to coming back and trying their other items on the menu. read more

Tried Ono Hawaiian BBQ and had a great experience overall. The drive-thru is super convenient, and there's plenty of parking and seating if you want to dine in. I used the drive-thru, great location right off the freew. I really liked how customizable the meals are, there are tons of sides and options to mix and match, which makes it easy to find something for everyone. All of the food was flavorful and made fresh. We ended up trying a lot of items to share. The Hawaiian BBQ Mix Plate was a great sampler with big portions, and the Chicken Katsu was crispy and best when paired with sauce. The Kalua Pork was smoky, and you can't go wrong with Spam Musubi, it's a must. The Loco Moco was rich and hearty, and the Teriyaki Chicken was cooked just right with great flavor. We also loved the BBQ Short Ribs and Garlic Shrimp, both full of flavor. The Macaroni Salad was creamy and perfect with all of the proteins. Definitely a great spot when you're craving Hawaiian-style comfort food! We are going to return soon and try some different items. read more

So glad we stopped here after spotting it while driving! This location opened recently, and it's a great fast food meets Hawaiian hospitality vibe. The interior is very clean and spacious. Even for a busy Saturday evening, the lines moved quickly. They have two registers and two self-order kiosks, which is super convenient. Since they cook to order, we were told the fish takes a bit longer, but our food was ready for dine-in within 15 mins not bad at all! They serve everything in to-go containers even if you eat there, which is a smart move since the value is incredible and the portions are massive. One plate can easily feed two people, but I opted for the $8 Fish Aloha Plate Special that's runs until April. I got the grilled fish and it did not disappoint! So delicious and tender over a bed of rice and spring mix. For the price and the amount of food you get, it is totally worth it. I also ordered a mini beef plate to go. While the beef was tasty, I wasn't a huge fan of the macaroni salad or the steamed veggies which was mostly cabbage. As for dessert, I got the guava pie and it tasted like a giant pop tart! I'll definitely stick to the Aloha Plate next time. read more

My husband and I tried this place yesterday for dinner. Place is very spacious. They did a great job converting the old Carl's Jr to this place. My husband ordered a mini meal with Hawaiian BBQ Chicken. He didn't want the rice, macaroni salad and steamed veggies and opted to pay extra for the Spring salad mix. I ordered a mini meal with Chicken Katsu with the rice, macaroni salad and steamed veggies. His chicken was on the chewy side. Salad was fine, just need more dressing. As for mine, I do like that I can get the Katsu sauce for myself. I finished my mini meal. The katsu breading was on the bland side but I do like that it adhered to the chicken way better than the other places I've been that serves chicken katsu. The other reason for the 3 stars was because one of their order kiosks was not working properly. Instead of them closing the kiosks, they left it open so anytime others used it, it was doing the same problem especially if they were aware of the problem since the other day. Will go back and check the rest of the food. Maybe I'll bring my daughter next time. read more

Ono Hawaiian BBQ - Mini Meal Chicken Katsu with a scoop of rice, a scoop of macaroni salad and steamed veggies - Hawaiian Near Me - Escondido, California

Went to have lunch here yesterday. I had the shrimp plate. It was horrible. The grease that the shrimp have been fried in had gone rancid. It was probably the worst meal I have ever had. I will not go back. They need to change the grease more frequently, or have separate grease pans for the pork, the chicken and the seafood. But they don't. It's all cooked in the same rancid grease. read more

I had seen this place during a trip to Arizona a few months ago, but I never got the chance to try it, so I was excited when one opened close to home. I stopped in for a quick bite and ordered something I usually get at other Hawaiian restaurants: the Spam musubi. Overall, it was okay, but not the best I've had. Thankfully, they have a self-serve sauce station with two different options because the Spam musubi itself didn't come with any sauce and was on the drier side. I also noticed that the Spam seemed a bit undercooked, which affected the overall flavor and texture. That said, the location itself is very spacious with plenty of seating, making it a comfortable place to dine in. The decor was really cool, the restaurant was very clean and the staff was friendly and welcoming. I'm glad I finally got to try it. read more

I was carrying my sauces and didnt put it in my to go bag, im not sure why i didnt, but he got out of the counter and offered me a sauce bag. Slivertre or Sly, I cant remember his name, but he was kind and i appreciated it. He was patient with me when I was ordering since It was my first time there and i didnt know what to order. I got the hawaiian beef plate and chicken katsu. You can order your plate with all rice or all mac salad or all veggies. I believe it does come with one each. Cant wait to go back ! read more

The establishment was clean and efficiently serving their customers. I just felt the food was much too salty and the options weren't as authentic or diverse as I would have liked. I think I would have rather gone to L and L to be honest. The pricing though was a good aspect. It's more of a fast food joint than authentic hawaiian food. read more

After a long awaited opening I was finally able to stop in for lunch. The facility has open seating and a decent space, however it can be confusing to figure out who is and isn't in line with how the self check out is set up. Lunch time was busy, but service was pretty quick. Staff is very nice, feels like they're still getting into the swing of things, but no issues on my end. The portions are big. My husband and I each ordered the Aloha plates. 2 scoops of rice, a scoop of mac salad, and 2 proteins was a lot of food for any plate lunch. The food was really good, but definitely be careful of the sauces. Appreciate the staff individually bagging each plate lunch to catch the juices from the meats in each meal. Each meal was at least 2-3 meals for us, and for the price it was worth it! We also ordered spam musubi and the guava pie. The guava pie was more like a large guava pop tart, still good, but a bit sweet for my tastes. read more

Had to try it out and see what it brings to this area. The staff here is very welcoming and friendly. The make sure you're not lost and answer any questions you may have. The drive thru isn't open currently, there was a sign saying it would open soon. Parking lot is pretty big and has enough spots during a busy time. Inside is nice and they have restrooms for customers, and tablets you can order on if it's very busy. The seating inside is fairly nice and well lit, with a Hawaiian vibe of course. We got one beef and chicken plate and one Hawaiian BBQ mix both with no macaroni salad. The food was delicious and was cooked perfectly, the sauce they used was flavorful. The rice was simple sticky jasmine rice. Underneath the meat there were also steamed vegetables. We will definitely go again and enjoy the Hawaiian food. We both had a great experience there with all the friendly people. read more

We came here a few days after the grand opening. It was worth it. Offhand it strikes you as little different than every other Hawaiian chain, though there aren't many. The fare is the same but that's not an insult, it only means they are as 10/10 as the other places I've been to. The portions are generous. My only negative, and it's not much, is the Hulu Guava Pie. I guess I should have known something that comes wrapped in cellophane would be mediocre. A shame since the idea is great but the follow-through isn't. I don't think I'll get those again. I suppose their purpose is to be something colorful in a basket at the register, not to actually eat one. read more

Too so long just to wait outside when person said it should only be 5 min but iris over half hour! Should have plan better!

I went to buy dinner last night for my husband to celebrate Father's day at his work. I ordered 2 separate items of a Pick2. The portions of Katsu was okay , but the Beef was over cooked- dark color almost burnt, meat has lots of fats too. We were So disappointed, this is our last time buying from here. The experience at Ono is unique, the service is very friendly, yet can be slow when busy. But the food and variety of it makes up the difference. The decor is light and airy with a tropical feel. Went through drive through. Might as well have been "park through" with the amount of time it took to get my food. I was only second in line! To top that, my order was not correct when I got it home. (Check your order before you leave!). I ordered a plate lunch with BBQ chicken and fried shrimp, Mac salad and all veggies (no rice). Trying to minimize carbs by making hard choices due to health issues. When I opened the container, I found the chicken, shrimp, Mac salad, 2 scoops of rice, and rice underneath the chicken and shrimp. NO VEGGIES! So disappointing... I like Ono Hawaiian, but I'm a "buyer beware" and I won't be going back for awhile. Ugh... read more

We were super excited to try this new spot by our house. My fiance just got an MRI and wanted something to lighten to day. When we got home, we found strands of black hair in our chicken and rice. Seems like the hair was marinated and cooked with the chicken. We called in to let them know and the person on the phone asked for the color of hair. Right after she said "ok thank you for telling me" and said goodbye. My question is, am I expected to just eat it? No exchange or new plate was offered. So gross and sad because we were so excited to eat it after a stressful day and to top it off, he instantly had to use the bathroom. read more

Absolute catastrophe for L&L Hawaiian Lovers. I, myself, too loved L&L Hawaiian but man, oh man. Ono Hawaiian brings a new standard to fresh Hawaiian food. When you open the door it's always welcoming and the workers actually look like they're happy to be working. I always love coming into spots where the owner ensures the store is nice, it's quite spacious and I like the modern and warm vibe. Love coming here, (my family is probably the reason that the employees get bonuses every week ) I would gladly come back to this spot. read more
