Yesterday I went with my friend and her 11 month old son to Once Upon a Child. I knew this was a kid's consignment shop, I just never knew they had so much more than just clothes. First, the clothes are really well organized. You've got the boys and girls sections, then they're sorted by age/ size, beyond that they're sorted by color and type. All the green size 3T tops would be together, so it's much easier to find what you need, or at least look where you might find something. Unfortunately, I've noticed most items are pretty worn looking, especially in sizes where kids are more mobile. The pants are looking pretty thin around the knees. The shirts look like they've been washed so many times the original color is questionable. Like most consignment shops, you've got to spend some time digging till you can find a gem. In addition to the clothes, you can also find strollers, bouncers, shoes, books, bikes, toys, school uniforms, dance leotards, tutus and dance shoes. Some toys come in their original packaging, others are packaged by the store staff. There's also a whole bunch of toys that are just thrown there, looking like a total mess. This store has a lot of variety for your growing child. I would stop by, there could be something you may find in decent condition at a fraction of the retail cost. read more

No room for exceptions, not even for a second time seller who didn't get the memo on the 16-gallon limit. Who knew that the staff here is more strict than the TSA. My time wasted and lesson learned. I would give this place a negative star for being so rude. I brought in a box full of Jordan's and other Nike sneakers that were clean the woman said we don't accept boxes ,things need to be in a plastic tote ,she then proceeded to say that my items smelled like smoke which I found odd since I don't smoke. They took the items only to text me after leaving that they didn't want the items and that's not a problem but at least have some common curtesy and treat customers good being rude and making accusations is outlandish I wouldn't recommend this place since the buy things cheaply and sell them at almost whole sale prices definitely a rip off read more

We had a really bad experience today bringing in clothing to them. Apparently our container was too big and then we were not allowed to get our clothing checked. The size of the container was not mentioned to us in prior trips. Also we saw other people bringing in clothes with laundry baskets, which was a format that was never mentioned to us ever before. I've never had an issue with staff, and they have been helpful to me. It's apparent they are overwhelmed with the loads of items coming in, sorting through, putting items out. Great place to stock up on (usually) gently used kids' clothing. Sometimes I've found clothing never worn - with original sales tags still attached. They also have used books and toys. You never know what you'll find, but it's always at a good price. read more

The worst one of them all, don't waste your time. The bathroom was atrocious with eyelashes and price tags stuck to the floor and clogged toilet and old French fries on the diaper changing station. I shop at once upon a child all the time but this time one of your staff members were rude when my daughter was playing with a toy on the floor with her father while I shop because my daughter is special needs . The staff member grab the toy and threw it in the bucket and made her cry. But sure didn't do that to the other little boy that was next to my daughter playing with toys as well. Checking in my stuff to sell was great. Nice and easy. Coming back to pick up the money and take back what wasn't accepted was terrible. The young girl that checked me out was unfriendly. No personality. Her attitude was take it or leave it. Which is obvious but her attitude didn't have to suggest it! Anyway, I was handed the money with no further instructions. I had to ask for my tote and then she says "it's in the middle" and proceeded to turn her back and walk away. I go to get my tote and it had an item that wasn't even mine in it and my lid was placed in someone else's bin. It's not a big deal I guess. This was just very off putting after the attitude I sensed. This was my first time in one of these types of places so I couldn't understand why I only got $60 for $150/$200 worth of clothes, sandals and a Fisher Price activity bouncer. Most of my daughters stuff still had tags on them and they took almost everything except the onsies which is understandable. I do not recommend selling your stuff her. I only accepted the offer because I'm decluttering my home and I don't have time for postmark or anything. To conclude, the service is inconsistent, the price you receive for new items is 30% if not lower. You can Sale at your own risk or if you're like me and just need your child's outgrown stuff gone. To set the stage, I'm a new mom who had emergency surgery (is still recovering) and has a lot of back issues at the moment. When you pull up to this location, it says that there's a fire lane and no parking right in front of the store. And because of this, I parked, found a cart that could accommodate my daughters car seat, and the tote bucket of clothes I was looking to sell prior to entering the store. When I walked in to the store, clearly struggling, an older associate huffed and said multiple times that I couldn't bring a cart into the store. Hearing her, I stop my stopped the cart, tried to pull the tote bucket and my daughters car seat out in preparation to wheel the cart out of the store. The associate repeated multiple times that I that I wasn't allowed to do what I was doing and couldn't have the cart in the store. Instead of offering help she acted exacerbated and told me I wasn't following the rules. So I asked her where the rules said this, and that I wasn't trying to be a pain in the ass, but that this was the only way I could balance, the tote and my daughter. The associate continued to be rude and said she would stop doing what she was currently doing to check me in because I wasn't following the rules. Another associate finished checking me in and went over how the process of selling clothes work at the store. The rest of the transaction went fine, but when I left, I made it a point to tell the manager that I felt uncomfortable when I came into the store. The associate I first encountered was there there and I told her that offering help would have gone a long way. I also told the manager that there was a fire lane no parking sign outside the door, and she explained that the local police were OK with customers of the store parking there to do drop offs. Unfortunately, this information was not available prior to my transaction. The associate I first encountered continue to scarf and snicker at me as I walked out of the store. read more

Wow just walking in here is overwelming. It's like one gigantic overstuffed closet. Yes, the clothing is separated into size categories but that's about it. All it seemed to be was set up in color categories. You have to pretty much hunt & peck through all this stuff and geez if you pull out an item of clothing your going to have real fun trying to shove it back in.....everything was so tightly hung next to each other. You can tell most of it is used once and a while you will find something that has never been worn. You can buy brand new on sale for almost the same price for some things. You'll wait for ever at the check out..... You really need to give yourself a good hour to find stuff here....so If you have the time it may be worth it. Guess I'm just not into Hunting & Pecking. Love this store! We buy most of my son's clothing here, since he grows like a weed! Great deals on gently used or nwt clothing. A huge selection of shoes, though I've never found any that worked for us. We have sold clothes and toys to this location and they have always been fair to us. The toy selection is not as large as some other locations, but they've got plenty to keep a kid busy while you shop. This is a great place to find strollers, jumpers, walkers, swings and bouncers. First they do not accept big bins...the problem is that they do not have a sign that mention this, so after you make the big trip and get everything inside...they said they do dot accept "big bins" or "bags" , so you need to buy bins to be able to "sale" . really is not worthy, they have the same OLD and EXPENSIVE STUFF like GOODWILL, better to sale online and go and buy in clearance sale of Kohl's or any other store than this .... read more

I love this store. I have not purchased a single item of clothing new for my four-year-old son since we moved to this area. I feel guilty when I buy ultra-cheap clothing (some of the reviewers here are taking about Old Navy and Carter's), since I don't like to think about sweatshops producing two-dollar t-shirts. Since I discovered OUAC, I've found extremely high-quality items in great shape. Of course you have to sift through some cheap and worn-out items to find exactly what you want, but I'm okay with that. I also stock up on onesies to embroider and monogram for baby gifts. Some of the reviewers mentioned the staff. They do seem a little bored sometimes, and aren't over-the-top friendly, but they certainly aren't rude or anything. They're just high-school kids for whom selling used toys probably isn't a life's passion. read more

Ah, where to begin? Let's just establish that the store was open until 8p, and when I arrived at 6:11 I was told "the buy counter closes at 6." This info was posted nowhere, so I'd just wasted a long trip dropping off my items. I said that if it was getting too late in the day for them to feel like dealing with processing my items, then I totally understood and would just drop them off for them to process tomorrow. Now that I have visited just about every OUAC location, this particular one can only be given a 2. And, it's for obvious reasons but more on that in a sec. The positive: Fairly clean store, rather large and they have a decent selection. But, that is where it stops. The negatives: The staff here (with the exception of maybe 2 women) are there is no better way to say it, effing rude. It's a revolving door when it comes to the staff here. They are beyond frustrating when it comes to selling. I see tattered and torn clothes on the racks yet they tell me the clothes I have taken to sell back (which came from them) are stained or considered "separates." On one particular occasion, I drove to another OUAC that day they turned away half my stuff and another one took all of the items. Ridiculous. Selling back is solely discretionary here and it is a joke! I have had to wait 5 or 6 hours for them to sort through stuff because they have an overabundance of things to look at. Waiting in line is painful. There is always one. My advice: Head to the Enfield location. Beautiful, brand new and lovely staff there. I would drive an extra 20 minutes to go there instead. The staff is rude and immature. I dropped off a few boxes of my daughter's baby clothes and while I was filling out the form, the employees gossiped and talked about their coworkers. When my two year old was in their way, they just glared at her and gave her a dirty look instead of saying "excuse me." I'm sure they have to deal with a lot of unhappy kids in that store which is why they are so grumpy- but give me a break! Smile at kids and lighten up, it makes life easier. I have sold to Once Upon a Child on several previous occasions, so I'm aware of their very high standards for merchandise. Prior to bringing clothing in, I went through and inspected it, and freshly laundered it. My husband dropped off; making very clear that I would be the one picking it up later. He was brushed off, and given a pick up time of 4 hours. I checked back at 3.5 hours, and was told "another hour." Fine, things happen. At this time, I selected a few dresses that I wanted to purchase at pick up time. Came back in an hour, and was told, "another 45 minutes." Starting to get annoyed.... Checked back at the 45 minute point, and my clothing was in the process of being looked through. Except they only looked through one box, telling me the other box "looked like it had been stored for a while... mumble mumble... not sure what it's called... mumble mumble... get in line." Somewhat annoyed, I get in line. I am asked for my id, which I present, explaining that my husband dropped off clothing, which he had put under my name, but the last name on the id was different. I was then informed that I couldn't actually pick up, because the name was different. I argued this a bit, indicating that the name on the slip, was, in fact mine. They relented and allowed me to pick up. I then ask for the items that I had asked to be placed aside. No one can find them. I'm done at this point and say, "nevermind." I'm given my check for accepted items, completely confused as to why one box wasn't looked through. I get home, and there is nothing to indicate it was "stored for a while," as it was freshly laundered. No dirt, no stains, no moths... a few wrinkles from being in a box. The only reason I'm giving two stars instead of one is because I've purchased things from here before, and not had a problem. But I will never sell to them again, just too much hassle! read more

I haven't been in this place in a while and most likely won't be back. First off, the staff is very rude and you feel like you are bothering them. There were 5 young people working and not one said hello. They were all just standing around talking, at one point they were all in the back of the store. They definitely made me feel uncomfortable. Very loud laughing and carrying on inappropriately. My daughter needed new books for summer reading and had probably about 25 books to buy. Sign said buy 1 get 1 but when asked about it I was told no that's not going on anymore. I asked well the sign is there so could you honor it since I am buying so many?? I get a look like I'm crazy and am told no. Unfortunately, i told my daughter some had to go back. 1/2 went back onto the shelf with hundreds of other books that will probably just sit there. Oh well! She wanted to look at the dresses and seriously - some should have just gone to goodwill - stained, one had a hole in it and you want $8.50??? I could go to Marshalls right across the street or TJMaxx right in the same plaza and get her brand new stuff for that price - which we did! When checking out the books, all 5 employees (if you could call them that) were all still just talking while me and my daughter stood there. After 5 minutes, one of them says, oh who wants to ring? Oh don't get up all at once now!?!? Unfortunately, OUAC has gone downhill fast. I used to get such good deals there and felt welcome but not anymore! Maybe others are better but this Wethersfield location is not what it used to be. I may check out the other location near me but this one, no thanks. I went in here to sell clothes. I wasn't interested in looking around, and I wasn't tempted. The store is slightly messy, lit with fluorescent lights and filled with irritating, entitled customers. The deals did look good - for example, the huge rack behind me was filled with onesies, all $10/10. But as I didn't want to buy, I stayed in one place. The woman who helped me was pleasant enough, I guess. She wasn't particularly nice, but it was clear that she was a fairly nice person who has just been beaten down by awful customers and an awful job. (I used to work retail, so I'm extremely forgiving of a lot of things, and quite unforgiving about others.) I read so many bad things about this store from the perspective of other sellers. Still, I assumed the complaints came from those who have no idea what "designer" or "brand name" means, people who brought in boxes of dirty, unfolded things from thrift stores, or people who were just generally unrealistic about what they had to sell. I thought I'd do ok because I really did bring good things. I had a bag filled with seasonally-appropriate Janie and Jack clothes, all of which had been washed, ironed, inspected and folded by me earlier in the day. I didn't bring the best stuff I have, but it was all, as far as I could tell, as good as new, most of it washed but never worn. I didn't bring a ton, but it would have been a nice amount if I'd sold on any of the many used clothing apps that are around now. Or even on eBay. I can't fault the store for the items that were rejected. I missed a few tiny (and I mean TINY, almost invisible) stains on 5 or 6 shirts. They have powerful lighting to make sure they don't let anything by, and that was good, because I wouldn't want stained clothing if I was a customer. The employee told me even she, with her familiarity with store policy, misses stains on the "buys" she brings from home until she comes in and takes a look at the items under the store lights. That's really reassuring as a customer, as it's so common to miss stains on clothes at thrift stores. The lights make this store miserable to be in, but at least they work to reveal flawed clothing. Ultimately, they kept a pile of clothes that, new, cost about $600. I was offered $11.50. I am aware that consignment and resale stores don't offer much, and one should never base expectations off original price. But still, I'd looked up a few items online, and I knew I could get more than that for just one pair of the lakes of pants I brought in. It was disappointing, but after preparing myself online, I wasn't surprised. I rejected their offer, and came home to list my clothes online. I was annoyed that I couldn't take the easy way out. But hey, a couple of those pieces already sold, just 3 hours after I was in the store this evening, and I've already made more than they offered me. So in sum, I definitely won't be back as a seller. As a buyer, I'm sure it's possible to get great deals. But the atmosphere was unpleasant enough that I'd suggest you just go to Savers, spend time in a similar environment, and spend even less money on kids clothes. One other annoyance - I brought everything in folded like it was ready to be put on a shelf. (My retail experience taught me well.) Even with me standing there, the person who inspected my clothes made no effort to fold them or put them back neatly. It bothered me a little. They are so strict about the condition of clothes they buy, and clearly expect items to arrive washed, ironed and folded. Think of this like a really great Goodwill store that only has kids stuff. You can find some clothes that are still new with tag for less than half the price of retail. They run some great sales on top of that. Clothes are packed in pretty tight and aisles are small, but the clothes are usually very well sorted by size and gender. It's true that they don't pay much when buying, but it's reflected in their sales prices. I only wish they gave a bonus if you got store credit instead of cash. read more

A very picky consignment store (bad if you are selling back, good if you are buying, and you will). What makes this place unique is that it really is a high-quality consignment kids clothing and toy store. Brand names like Gymboree, Gap, etc at low prices. PLUS if you get the discount card you can quickly collect stamps for every $10 you sell back OR buy, and that adds up quickly to you getting 15% off a purchase. Ever since my son was born at the nearby Manchester Memorial hospital (recommended!), we have been buying him stuff from there. I feel good knowing that I am doing my bit to recycle (think of the tons of plastic that goes into make new toys every year when there are ton of perfectly good gear sitting in people's homes), and that I am letting someone else take the hit for paying for brand names. Con: The employees always seem to be young, trashy-looking women who (?) don't have kids. Con: They close at 8 and stop buying back stuff at 6:30 but they don't post this essential bit of info on their site. I have seen people get turned away (in a very unapologetic manner). read more

Great selection but sometimes prices are high for a consignment store... My biggest issue is the fact that employees sometimes are too lazy to actually look through all your stuff.. And their excuse is stains, out of season, ect. When I look some boxes haven't even been touched and in the same exact place.. Its especially noticeable when it contaons a fair amount of NWT items. I inspect the clothing before I even pack it none ever have stains and some are even new with tags.. meanwhile 2t old navy jeans are in the store with brown dirt stains and discoloration are on sale for $9.. Then they say that seperates are missing their pair WHEN I BOUGHT THEM INDIVIDUALLY! & I see clothing from carters that come as a pair being sold as a separate.. So frustrating! I ended up giving up and just bringing my stuff to savers I get 20% that day if I shop and with $20 I can get a ton of outfits for my little one and even something for myself. Last time I found her some cute old navy boyfriend jeans no stains practically new for 2.99! Awesome deal! Recommend everyone goes there instead! read more

I have been bringing my sons clothes here since he was an infant and getting him new clothes there also, he is now 6 years old. We have never had any issues with selling our gently used clothes, I like the fact that they do not just take anything the clothes need to be in good condition and I appreciate that being on the buyer side also :). Worst place. Let's start with how not pleasant the workers are. I don't care if you're in high school, i don't care if this isn't your passion, it's a job and you need to respect it. You walk in expecting to we welcomed, but you get sour faces and not one hello (even when my young four year old says "hello"). They NEVER buy anything (at least that i bring in), even when it has tags still on it because my kids never got to wear it. Perfect example; i just dropped of a bag full of nothing but new shoes and clothes and they didn't even open it! Wasted my time and try to tell me it either had "foot odor" or " foul odor" (couldn't understand the guy). Which are both lies. Also, i walked in, stood in line, only as soon as the person in front of me was done the guy walked away for a good 3 mins that it appeared the manager had to call someone else over to help and she grabs the person behind me! I am completely upset with how this store is ran, the one in Manchester takes more from my bags, but i shouldn't have to go an extra 15 miles just to resell to the same company. read more

Once Upon a Child is a great place to buy kids clothes. They grow so fast and are usually pretty rough on their clothes and shoes, why pay full price, when this store has all name brands for at least 70% off retail stores. And they have sales on top of already low prices. The last time I shopped there I spent $100 and walked out with 2 huge bags for my 4 yr old. I love Once Upon a Child!!!! read more
