I went in around noon for a dozen oysters and seafood basket. The seafood was frozen but not too bad. I was ignored by bar tender even though I set a $100 on the counter. I wanted till she asked if I was ready. I repied Ive been reADY. She began to get REAL poite and finally give service... Next time I took a gorgeous lady there. Waitress was nice and I got oysters and shrimp. I could not find waitress. Eventually we went up to pay. One server tossed the bill upon the bar NOT loking at us. Great little "hole in the wall" place! The food was great. The service was great. The atmosphere was great! And you can't beat the prices.

If you want good drinks and seafood I would come here. This was some of the best seafood we had on our trip. We shared the raw oysters and mussels for an appetizer. Both were delicious. They do not have a kid's menu so I decided to share the seafood platter with my son. It was so good. The fried food was crispy and not greasy. The only thing I disliked was the coleslaw because it was bland. I had a whiskey cocktail that was excellent. We would eat here again. read more

Stopped in for dinner here tonight and I am so glad we did! Not really even sure how we found it, kind of hidden from the road and the outside wouldn't lead you to believe it was anything special. Inside the setting was kind of an upscale sports bar. Unfortunately they were out of raw oysters (common theme in this area), but they had great happy hour food specials so we had a feast of 3 sushi rolls, Buffalo shrimp, and fish tacos. The shrimp and tacos were very good. The sushi? INCREDIBLE. Some of the best I've ever had. I wish we would've just got a table full of sushi, and most of the rolls were only $4 during happy hour! This is a local hangout spot, so don't expect a warm welcome or stellar service. It was very loud and the music was bad. A DJ set up right next to us halfway through the meal and started bumping some techno. I asked for a drink menu and the waitress said "just normal bar stuff". I had the Italian sub, which was generously portioned and pretty tasty. The fries were extra greasy but still decent. My girlfriend ordered oysters (mediocre), coconut shrimp (good), bacon wrapped scallops (best thing we had), and tater tots (sub par, no seasoning and bland). The prices are very fair and for that reason, some of the lesser desirable things about this place could be overlooked. We just happened to be at the end of our day when we stopped in (they're open very late), so perhaps the atmosphere bothered me more than it would have earlier in the day. But there's plenty of higher quality options nearby if you're not worried about price. read more

We found On the Half Shell on the Yelp app when we searched for a good place to eat in Murrells Inlet that was good for kids. We visited during lunch on a Friday and had a great experience. They easily catered to our family of 11 (3 adults and 8 kids). We all really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. The fried oyster basket was my personal favorite! The kids got flatbreads and ate all of their food! I even wanted to purchase a t-shirt, but the waitress didn't have access to the office key at the time. So, we will definitely visit again and get a few shirts to advertise a bit. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Definitely recommend! read more

Don't let the low amount of reviews fool you. This place was recommended to us by a local and I'm so glad we gave it a try. The seafood was well seasoned, the clams and mussels had a garlic sauce that was to die for and during happy hour they serve it next to nothing. This place is amazing! It gets pretty busy with the locals after a certain hour and especially during the happy hour Monday-Friday from 4-7pm. But it is a wonderful choice, don't miss out! This is definitely a locals place. Screaming dissolved men outside when we arrived. It continued inside as well. Pool table patron screaming at everyone and blaring heavy metal music made it impossible to hear to talk. You were on edge wondering if the screaming men were going to fight or just keep talking about it. Well scream about it. No talking was happening or we could have heard ourselves. Was told no peel and eat shrimp. ordered something else. But dang if they didn't bring us peel and eat shrimp. but they were peeled already.... I won't be back. Food wasn't that great. Service slow. We have been here a few times and I always forget to add a review. Oysters on the half shell are large and tasty. A dozen will run you $12, you will not find that anywhere else in the area. The cocktail sauce and horseradish is $0.50 each. The fried oysters are what you would expect from decent large fried oysters. Shout out for the fries, they are crispy with a soft center, very good. The staff is always fun and the gals work hard, hustling for their customers. The staff has been known to instigate and participate in shots, work hard - play harder. Love it! read more

A-OK seems right. Visiting from Atlanta and wanted some seafood. Went here with locals who said the food is good and the prices are right. The place is a dive, absolutely no atmosphere whatsoever, at least inside where we sat. And LOUD, thanks to the multiple TV's blasting college football games. The food was alright. We had boiled shrimp, fried calamari, and mussels in garlic sauce for appetizers. All decent but nothing spectacular. Each of the four of us had entrees. Mine was grilled fish with scallops (2!) and fries. The fries were fries, the scallops overcooked, but the fish was really good. Probably whitefish, the menu didn't specify, just said...fish. Anyway the price with tip was $125. That seems like a lot for lunch for four. But who knows, maybe it's normal. I don't know since I don't live here. Good to watch a game and get some Ok seafood but if you're looking for atmosphere, look elsewhere. read more

It was an off day at On the Half Shell! We waited about an hour after ordering before our food came. Both of our orders were incorrect. My husband's came as a completely different version of pizza. They didn't charge us for it though. My fish came as deep fat fried, but I had ordered blackened. Then the ice tea with lemon was really water with lemon. Couldn't taste any tea. There were no masks or social distancing to be seen, inside or out. On the positive side, the French fries were the best we've had in Myrtle Beach! My deep fat fried fish was firm and delicious, though I don't normally choose food made that way. The people at the bars were really enjoying themselves. The jovial, popular shabby beach bar atmosphere would have been perfect if that was what we were seeking, even though they are far from the beach! Perhaps on a better day and at an earlier time in our lives, we would have loved this place! We probably will not return for eating, however. read more

Friends from this area took us to this "Blue Collar Bar" and it was excellent! I had philly steak tender and delicious my wife had fish nacho that were the best. We sat at the bar and were served by Jason a very friendly and personable guy that made our evening all the better. I will be sure to go back again. read more

Writing this bad review makes me sad, because this has been my favorite dive bar for years. When I lived alone in Murrells Inlet, I frequently walked to the half shell and always had a good experience- great food, good drinks, and cheap. I was very impressed when Savannah started helping to make improvements around the place, and this was my favorite bar ever. I moved away last year and recently visited with friends and family, and couldn't wait to take them to the place I had raved about. We went twice in a week- first time sat outside and ordered at the bar- it was great, just slow food which is understandable during COVID. Second time, we sat inside and our server was horrendous. So rude, got mad at us for having a large group, and acted annoyed to even have customers. Waiting for our food wouldn't have been a problem, but this woman's attitude was so horrible. She seemed stressed that the kitchen was so slow, but that is no excuse to be rude. If you have open seats in a restaurant- be prepared for customers!! Having a large group (sitting at multiple different tables) is no different than lots of small groups. I should note the first night we had a "reservation" but showed up and there was no table saved for us. So the second visit we did not make a reservation and just showed up (keep in mind there were plenty of tables available), and the waitress about lost her mind. I understand staffing is difficult with COVID, but being kind and serving drinks and letting us know the kitchen is slow would be way better than what we received. So I would still go alone and sit at the bar, maybe with 1 friend, but definitely would only sit at the bar and not inside at a table. That waitress needs a reality check especially when we are the ones tipping you- please provide more service training to your people! read more

My family and I stumbled upon this place tucked away in Murrells Inlet after winning a gift certificate at a raffle. Glad we did or otherwise probably wouldn't have known about it. We stopped for lunch and got a wing platter with 50 hot wings and an order of cheese fries! Very good meal! Wings were fried out nicely and coated in a good medium to medium-hot sauce with lots of flavor! Also the cheese fries were covered in lots of bacon and cheese which made them delicious! We were very excited to try this restaurant as we were going with my sister and my brother in law who are locals. We waited a long time for the server to welcome us. After the server came to us, we ordered our drinks and food. Our food came out before our drinks. When our drinks came out, several were so nasty that we couldn't even drink them. Our food came out wrong SEVERAL times! We had extra food, wrong food and missing food. We asked for the manager. It took three times and then he came out cursing at us. Although it was done in a joking manner, it was still inappropriate. Our server walked away from us when we told her something was wrong. Although we were comped, i would still not go back. Six of us went to "On the half shell" for happy hour. They had a decent review so we thought we would try it. The place is just a bar, not to clean, a little run down, nothing fancy; vinyl chairs pealing, place smells like old fish. We asked if we could sit outside for happy hour and the greeter said that happy hour was only in the bar area. Okay, no problem, not unusual. There were tables to the left of the bar and asked if we could grab one of them, again we were told no, and we can sit only at the 8 or 10 tables immediately around the bar. All the larger tables that seat 6 were taken so we sat a table that had 4 seats and pulled up 2 more seats. We were told that the 2 seats could be in the way if someone wanted to play pool. There was no one playing pool and we said if someone wanted to play pool we would move if they needed to take a shot on our side of the table. We were told we had to move and wait until a larger table was available and also the kitchen was behind so it would be a while. "On the half shell" made NO effort to accommodate our group of six. We left and spent our money down the road. We were very disappointed we didn't get to try the place; we are locals and most likely never return. This place has nothing special to offer and you can get the same food and drinks almost anywhere in the area with better service. I give them a ZERO. read more

It took a few minutes to be acknowledged and when we finally got our beers and menus, it took another ten or so minutes to be asked for an order. We passed on the order and found a new place.
