Admittedly they aren't a unique business with little competition. You would generally expect more from healthcare suppliers. My conclusion you would like to be gouged. Since government payment might be involved gouging isn't unusual but not tolerable by the average self-pay person. Granted the government has goods and service shortages to develop whether it's HVAC plumbing or any other skilled trade expect to be gouged. In England they have a standards bureau which is functionally consumer protection for those who overcharge. As Americans we get to pay more for everything
