Fire and Ice Manly is one of those restaurants where you could absolutely sit there all afternoon,…read moreand well into the evening for many reasons. 1) The food is amazing 2) The staff are delightful 3) The view is incredible We went on an early evening one Saturday night are were greeted with quite possibly the nicest staff you'll ever meet. Sharon and David, the owners have been in the restaurant industry since their teens and have owned and run a few steakhouses in their time. They previously owned Ribs and Burgers for 18 years. They have since opened Fire and Ice, an ocean front restaurant in Manly with a concept serving raw meats, smoked meats, grilled meats and plenty of seafood. David knows his stuff, and certainly knows his meats. We took his advice and went for a 400g dry aged steak, served with fries and salad. The steak was incredible and cooked to our request. Having just returned from Argentina, we feel that we do know our steaks. We would certainly recommend a visit here for their meat. Top this off with a glass of red and you're set. We couldn't go past seafood on this visit, given we were at a beachside location. We ordered tuna tataki, so fresh and accompanied by a wasabi aioli and soy. The scallops were perfectly cooked, and the kingfish was so fresh and beautifully presented on a salt slab, marinated with lemon and lime, olive oil, chilli, capsicum, coriander and chives. The seafood here is quality and certainly a must and there's even a seafood platter that would be a great option for sharing. The menu is one of the biggest you'll find, not only in size, but the amount of menu options. Oysters to small bites, both hot and cold including a few dishes reflective of the owners' South African heritage. There are plenty of pastas, burgers, ribs and side salads to select from. There's also vegetarian options for those that prefer this. Steak though, is their specialty, as you enter you can see their aged locker of the beef options, and you can have fillet or sirloin on the bone, rib eye or a T-bone. You can read about the suppliers of this quality steak in the back of their menu. Sharon is possibly one of the best front of house managers we've met. She is so kind and welcoming and we really appreciated her hospitality. You can tell her experienced with the first greeting. There are some large and private areas too, so you could certainly hire this out for a party.

Great food. Great service. Staff is very willing to alter dishes to your liking. Ten thumbs upread more

La Grillade Restaurant - 36hr Marylands lamb shoulder

Before stepping into La Grillade it was already on the back foot. During my reservation I'd…read morespecifically mentioned I wanted the 36hr Maryland lamb shoulder. They called the day of my reservation around 1pm to confirm with me that I'd still be making it but later called at 6pm saying unfortunately the lamb shoulder would not be available. Not happy Jan! On the bright side though at least I was still told before getting there. Rescheduled for the following week and with some luck the lamb shoulder was in stock! FOOD Complimentary bread and a shot glass of soup coupled with pieces of soft blue cheese. I wish that shot glass had been a bowl of soup and blue cheese. First entree was the Grilled scallops served with fresh truffle ($26.50). Extra $10 for the few shaves of truffle but so worth it! The velouté sauce accompanying the scallops was phenomenal. Second entree was the Twice baked spanner crab soufflé ($17.50). Whilst the soufflé was soft and fluffy in terms of flavour it was definitely overshadowed by the scallops. After the entrees the monster dish I'd been waiting for was served. The 36hr Marylands lamb shoulder to share ($69) is a must to try if you come to La Grillade. The lamb is so soft and tender it falls off the bone. This is quite a fatty part of the lamb which means its juicy and oh so flavoursome. There is so much meat my sweet tooth needs to have a rest and pass on dessert. OVERALL I loved everything about this place. The food, the setting, the fireplace which creates a warm intimate atmosphere. It made me forget about all my initial annoyances which is what all great restaurants do!

The word institution is bandied about far too often these days (Starbucks is not an institution, children), but La Grillade is fer damn sure an institution in these here parts. The food was rich and wonderfully done: chilli salt and pepper calamari and duck pate with port wine jelly and salted crispbread to start, leading into amazing mains of pork belly with a veal wine reduction - a superb texture combination of white meat, salty fat, and chewy, caramelised crackling - and pan-seared Atlantic salmon which was simply faultless. Dessert was vanilla bean pannacotta with a berry coulis and pear stewed in wine with vanilla ice cream. There could have been more ice cream but really, with the amount of food we ate, any more would have been gluttonous. So I guess it was just right. This was one of those meals had me wishing I'd worn elastic pants. And had one of those sticks with the two ceramic fingers on the end to purge gloriously, like a Roman emperor might.

They have a diverse menu which caters for all different crowds and occasions. The restaurant can seat up to 140 guests and can host a cocktail event for up to 160 guests. Indoor and outdoor seating options are available. On a sunny day, the outdoor seating is the most ideal for soaking up the sun and appreciating the beautiful view of Manly Beach. To drink, we had the Whitewater Martini - kaffir lime and lemongrass, infused vodka, apple liqueur shaken with apple juice and lime juice. Pleasant flavour and great combination of flavours. The other half needed some caffeine so he had a strong cup of coffee. The coffee art was surprisingly impressive. We visited the restaurant for lunch and started with the Roasted Chinese duck with housemade pancakes, shallots, cucumber and plum hoisin sauce. The serving size was perfect, wasn't too big or too small. For a restaurant that doesn't specialize in Chinese cuisine, the flavours were on par. The only drawback for us was that there were 5 pieces of duck but only 4 pancakes. For the mains we had the Homemade tiger prawn spaghetti, cherry tomatoes, parsley and garlic pesto, spinach, and chilli in a Napolitana sauce. There was a generous amount of prawns and the pasta was nicely cooked. The flavours worked well together. The second main we had was the chargrilled swordfish fillet with tartar sauce and lime. It's normally served with steakhouse chips but we opted for rocket salad to get some greens in. It was well seasoned and the tartar sauce nicely complimented the fish. The meal was well presented, on a chopping board which gave a rustic and homey feel. The rocket salad worked very well with the fish. It had parmesan, pinenuts, and aged balsamic dressing. The fish was a little overcooked for our preference but apart from that, it was delicious. No meal is complete without dessert. With the wide selection of options on the dessert menu at Whitewater, it's an even better excuse. We were excited to try the Lemon Meringue which was a short crust pastry filled with a zesty lemon curd topped with burnt Italian Meringue. The pastry was light and crispy and the meringue was not too sweet. All the flavours worked very well together. We also tried the Affogato which was a sweet and simple way to finish off our meals.
