Easily the best restaurant in Dekalb/Sycamore. It's certainly not just the sushi. Noodle dishes (for example, Ramen) and many other items are top notch. My only beef is that too many sushi options have imitation crabmeat in them. While it does matter as much to me for a rating, for those that care more, the service is always superb. read more

We got the 8 piece boneless K chicken in soy garlic and magic sprinkle (cheese and onion seasoning). The chicken is HUGE, well worth it for the price. The soy garlic was my favorite - a good mix of sweet, savory, and salty. The magic sprinkle was good as well, just a bit too sweet for my taste. I had a very pleasant experience dining at Omi Sushi one Tuesday evening. This small Japanese place was located on a small strip mall with a lot of parking spaces. We were greeted by a super happy and friendly hostess and were immediately seated at a table. Everyone was wearing a mask in the restaurant and they do require customers to wear masks as well. Sanitizers were provided on each table. Once seated, our server took our drink orders and gave us hot miso soups and salads. There were other dine in customers in the place as well as picking up to- go orders that evening but service still was absolutely phenomenal. They offer Sake, domestic beers and a few wines as well. As usual, my kids and I ordered dishes that were more than enough for the three of us: SPICY CHICKEN- delicious! Ample amount of chicken and the sauce had great flavors. TONKATSU- simple yet satisfying. DRAGON, LAS VEGAS, SPIDER, SPICY TUNA AND SHRIMP TEMPURA ROLLS- they were all fantastic. We finished every.single.roll. I am honestly happy that we discovered this place because this was highly approved by my kids and by myself. The food was of good quality, delicious, portions were plentiful, and the service was excellent. Recently visited this place for dinner. I understand they need more help in their restaurant, but we waited a ridiculously long time just to get water. I tried their crab Rangoon appetizer and it was literally the worst I've ever had. You only get 4 and they are small, over-fried, and unappetizing. We also tried a sushi roll ... which was OK, but the overwhelming taste of imitation crab meat made it taste wrong. Next, fried rice with vegetables & beef was actually decent, but knowing quality of ingredients in other dishes, made me wonder... The service was also an issue. Omi Sushi is on our regular rotation of local eateries and I definitely recommend a visit. The sushi is fresh and made to order. The rolls are very robust unlike the tiny California rolls you can get at the grocery store. Probably the most famous roll is the 911, which implies it may be spicy or hot, but it is not. Rather, it has a creamy taste, is humongous, and is easily a portion for 2, even 3 people. What makes this roll unique is that it's brought to the table and set on fire, much like Greek Saginaki. Apart from the rolls, the sushi is also as fresh as it comes, and the Udon is served in a large bowl with a plethora of noodles and broth. The restaurant sits back in a strip mall next to a dry cleaned and can be easily missed among the other big box stores nearby. The place is kept clean, had prompt and courteous service, and average cost for a variety of Japanese and Korean dishes. A great place to enjoy a quiet meal. read more

This is THE sushi place to go to in DeKalb. I feel like a lot of people don't know about it because it is on the other side of town (not near campus). It is worth the drive! What I ordered: I have been here several times and I always get something different. This time I got one of the special rolls, the omi. I took a chance with this one because normally I don't like friend sushi, but I loved it. The sauce really made it stand out. The inside is nothing special, but I like how there are shades hanging from the ceiling that separate the room. It makes it feel a little more intimate. The sushi is fairly priced. The special rolls are a little more expensive than the normal rolls. Even though we're not really blocking the doorway while waiting for them to get our table ready, she demanded "CAN YOU MOVE" because a customer was waiting outside for a pickup. As if we aren't one of her customers. After we were seated, My infant touched the curtain on the window and fell on us with some hanging lights. Our waitress told us it's fine to leave it on the ground, but the female owner literally told me to MOVE and forced me and my child out of chair to take the curtain while stepping on my son's coat. Came in with my boyfriend last Friday for dinner (around 6pm), and while there were only two other tables occupied at the time we were seated, the place filled up quickly as the hour went on. We ordered 2 rolls, the diablo and dragon, and both were delicious and pretty large too! My roll had cooked ingredients and it was still warm when served. The presentation on the dishes are lovely. (Definitely should have snapped a picture!) Their service was friendly, our waitress was very sweet. We didn't wait all that long, but we definitely came in at the right time. I made an order for carryout tonight, and as always, food was great and service was friendly. Unfortunately I did not realize the unagi don is literally $9 extra after lunch hours. I ordered the same dish through Doordash for lunch some time last month, and confirmed with my digital receipt that the unagi don lunch special was $13.95. My reciept for tonight says the exact same dish was $22.95. Again, this place has great food, I just recommend checking out if your dish is cheaper at lunch, and consider going then instead. However, today when I ordered I noticed something that didn't particularly thrill me. As a vegetarian, I order the AAC rolls which do not contain any fish. In the rice, there was a shockingly large amount of caviar, which is really disappointing and disgusting if you are vegetarian. The cavair was definately there on accident, but regardless if that cross contimation occurred, what else is occuring? I wanted to make a special shout out for the servers at Omi Sushi. I regret not getting his name, but the main server is a gem. He was so friendly, super quick, highly attentive. He would notice whenever we needed anything right away. He even gave us a whole French press pot to refill our green tea ourselves! Ordered: - Hot green tea. Get it! It's only $1 per person and they use real green tea leaves (hojicha I'm guessing) brewed in a French press pot. There's a very pure matcha flavor from it. - Fuji Mountain: Deep-fried scallops topped with spicy crab. 5+/5 I highly recommend this app! I was surprised it came with so many pieces (6) of scallop. The spicy crab could have been a bit spicier but the sauce was very addicting. Protip: it comes on a bed of crispy white cracker that you should break off in pieces and use as a chip with some of the crab! - Chef's sashimi sampler (6 pcs): Chef's choice of assorted sashimi. 4/5 Again, I was very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the sashimi. I was hesitant to try raw fish out here in Dekalb (middle of cornfields) but I'm more reassured now. - Green River specialty sushi roll: Panko deep fried salmon, cucumber, and lobster guacamole topped with white tuna & white sauce & wasabi tobiko. 4/5 This roll is a bit too big to fit as one bite (for someone with a smaller mouth), and was a bit sweeter than I expected. I was there was more avocado/guac but otherwise the texture of the cucumber and panko really helped balance out the roll. - Spicy Sashimi Salad: Spicy assorted raw fish salad 5+/5 This salad was massive! We weren't expecting how big it was going to be. Plentiful chunks of salmon, tuna, and fatty white tuna covered in tobiko fish roe, nori strips, avocado, and delicious red sweet & spicy sauce that I'm guessing was Korean gochuchang sauce. Get this if you love sashimi (raw fish)! Bang for your buck & very flavorful. - Nabeyaki Udon: Thick udon noodles with vegetables, nori, egg, fish based soup style and shrimp tempura. 5/5 The depth of this broth was really impressive, and the egg was done in an egg-drop soup style. The 5 stars should be a good indicator that I not only love this place but that I am a frequent patron. In fact I've visited already twice this week. But it occurred to me yesterday that I had never written a review for Omi and for that I apologize profusely. In DeKalb to find good sushi is one thing but to find good sushi and good service is a diamond in the rough. To start with my meal I began with a fresh cup of green tea. It was not terribly bitter and was a pleasant start to my lunch. For a quick appetizer I started with a salad with their delicious ginger dressing. I love ginger so this was a great way to begin the meal. For my main order I went with the firecracker roll, spicy California roll, and the spicy tuna roll. All 3 were absolutely delicious and made with a very cool design. It came with a slice of beet and made a nice ending to the sushi. For desert I went with the mango mochi and as always it was perfectly sweet with great texture. At the end of the day, Omi sushi is a must if you want sushi and are in DeKalb. I went to Haru for a late lunch, and there was only one other occupied table. I found the service to be more than adequate and the prices for the rolls and nigiri to be in line with what I have paid in other locations. The taste and quality of the rolls was excellent! Let me stay of by saying I'm not a fan of sushi but... We went to Haro for my son's birthday and I was totally blown away. I ordered the chicken teriyaki which was good, but sitting at the bar watching the chef prepare the sushi was the real treat. The presentation was outstanding! When the chef heard I didn't like raw fish he prepared a veggie roll for me that was incredible! He also made another roll (which we didn't order) in honor of the birthday we were celebrating. This place is the best sushi restaurant in town! Though it's a bit of a drive from my apartment on campus, it's hands down the best! They have some incredible sushi rolls both regular and fried. The best part of this restaurant is that the staff is incredible friendly! Out of the dozens of times I have been, I have never had a bad experience. As far as covid, Omi is clean!
