I was a little afraid when I walk in because I noticed it was not a a Restaurant that they cook the on the table and to be honest I wanted to walk away because it just gave me bad vibes but my son said oh is good but when he paid for his sushi and it was only 8 pieces I think and a drink it was $36 I almost pass out of course he was not full and I end up sharing my stake with fried rice it was not good at all I also had a udon soup with shrimp tempura it was just basic no Flavor at all. Back in DeKalb after a few years, came here again. Tried the tofu hibachi this time. I have nothing to complain about. The tofu was characteristically crispy with the right ratios of tofu to veggies to rice, and the two dipping sauces were delicious. Great value. I also tried one of the green tea daifuku (they call them "mochi cakes") out of the fridge - these are prepackaged but still pretty good, same quality as the ones I get on the west coast. Maybe on days she isn't working it would be a four, but we caught this establishment at the wrong time. Today I visited Fushi Yami in DeKalb, Illinois. Upon entry, I'm greeted with a plethora of people, all of which did not seem to know what was going on. Listen, the place is great with phenomenal food. But the service, yeesh!! All was fine, until my buddy starting ordering. He was met with a young women, whom had greyish/purple hair, and was wearing a skeleton jacket. She was rude, distasteful, and downright disgusting. She was sighing at every turn, almost rolling her eyes as well. She spoke in a tone that told a dark story, one of which was not pleasant to hear. Her voice was rash, and her mannerisms childish, as if she had not even been raised by any form of adult. When the order was complete, she did not say thank you, but instead turned to her coworker and rudely said "YEAH I ASKED HIM TWO TIMES" talking about my friend. How mean is that? Then it was my turn, I walk up, scared for what is about to come. She doesn't say anything, but instead shoots darts at me with her devilish eyes. I say "sorry" and then place my order. She does not say anything single thing even after I said thank you. My experience with that young girl changed my perspective on not only that place, but on life. I've been a long time customer. And HOLY COW couldn't be more dissapointed this time. Normally everyone is polite when u order but not this girl! She like scoffed at me when I had to pull up a text message with an order. Just being over all mean demeanor. And hey maybe she was having a bad day but doesn't give excuse to be mean. At the end when I was walking away she told her coworker. "Yea I asked him 2 times" she asked me 2 times in which if the order was right or wrong. It was wrong by the way. The first few times I came here, the food honestly was subpar. It didn't taste fresh. Admittedly, I didn't want to return, but ended up ordering a few more times on account of company. I'm really glad I did. My original concerns were entirely abated. The fish tasted fresh, the rice was really nice. The hibachi items tasted really good, too. I won't be back here. We gave it a chance. But it's not a good experience in any respect. You know how sometimes you have gone into an unassuming little dive that looked like it threatened to give you botulism but it was one of the best meals you ever had? This is not that place. Crowded, garish, and slightly grimy. Random assortment of tables and incomprehensible room divider. The cashier knew nothing, or next to nothing, about the menu. Food took forever to come. It was not fun waiting in line to order (why is there no table service?), or waiting for the sushi to come. I mean, come on, it's raw after all! Why does it take a half hour to come? Even on a busy Friday night. The udon noodle soup was strangely ink colored. The individual rolls-- some with tempura, some with eel, some with guacamole (yes, guacamole, not just avocado, which is plenty strange)--were okay, but nothing tasted uber fresh. It looked good, though. The hibachi fried rice was pedestrian and a little greasy. The beef (eaten by my companion) was nothing to write home about. And then afterwards you feel you want to steady your feet, and maybe be near a receptacle. Thankfully, we made it home, but I was anxious about taking off my hoodie to use as a barf bag, just in case. That was not the worst part of the experience. The worst part of the experience was the clientele. Disgustingly loud and inconsiderate, attention-seeking troglodytes. I felt like we were in the 9th circle of hell where Fran Drescher and Kristen Schaal are having a conversation over a wind tunnel. What the hell are they doing ordering sushi? Since when do those who do not know how to use an "inside" voice decide to pay for expensive, raw fish for a meal? Maybe because it's a college town or more people have more disposable income than economists are giving them credit for. Either way, it was a bust. We enjoyed our lunch here. We three ordered six different items and they were all good. It's almost a self serve place. You order on a monitor and the food is delivered by a cute little robot named Mushroom. And then you bus your own table. We saw how others complained about the gruffness of the staff. I think that's just his usual look. It's located just off campus and we were impressed that they take HuskyBucks. Prices are good, too. The food was so good and I didn't have to wait long. The service was kind of how do I put it...not human?! A robot with a iPad face was the server and it made it a unique experience. I've always wanted to try this place but then Covid happened and I never made the trip. Finally tried it and loved it. We ordered the steak habachi which was delicious. I will def order it again! We also got sushi- California and tuna rolls. They were okay. We also got bubble teas to take home with us, however the wait was very long and not much places to wait after ordering unless we were dining in. Also, when we got home- I opened the bag to see ginger and sauces spilled inside of the bag. Either they didn't carefully put everything in with the lids closed or something. We recently went there for a late lunch/early dinner so there was no wait time at all. Our 9 year old was thrilled with the robot delivery & honestly, so were the adults! I don't actually ever eat sushi but that wasn't a problem for me at all. Their menu is quite extensive with many options other than sushi. One of us was a bit confused by the layout of the menu, so we had to spend a bit of time explaining it to her. We ended up simply ordering for her & she really liked our choice! I'm pretty sure we ordered something from every category of food & it was ALL delicious! We did have to do our own cleanup, but I don't think it's a big deal. I didn't follow the menu suggestions of other Yelpers and maybe that was the issue with my lunch. I ordered an asparagus roll and steak fried rice off the very large menu. Both items came out quickly--almost together. The tiny asparagus roll was okay--a thin piece of vegetable wrapped in bland rice and nori. The pickled ginger condiment was dry from obviously sitting out. As stated, the fried rice seemed to come out too quickly. I suspect it was already prepared and just reheated. The beef was overcooked (chewy, lacking juiciness), the rice had bites that were crunchy. Nicely decorated, this restaurant is essentially a fast food spot. Though food is delivered to your table there's no follow-up to see if you're satisfied. You serve your own drinks. read more

I didn't get the chance to have a dine in experience, but based upon their to go order the food was good. They give plenty for what you pay for. You can taste the flavors from the rice, veggies, and the steak was cooked to perfection. I will give them more than likely a five once I'm able to dine in and get the full experience I'm more than guaranteed that will get the best rating from me. When I search for food I mainly lood for price, amount of food and flavor of course. Best cheap hibachi, I got at least 2-3 pounds of food for around $13. No soy sauce needed on the rice, maybe a little bit for the chicken cuz it can get dry. They probably use breast. They cooked my steak perfectly, literally the first place to cook my steak right and I've been to top dollar hibachi places. If you're looking for cheap sushi, this place is the way to go. Not saying it tastes bad. In fact, it's actually pretty decent. All of their signature ones - like Godzilla or rainbow roll - are a little bit on the expensive side. But, all of their other rolls are at a decent price, ranging from about $4-$7! The appetizers are great, especially the takoyaki, which is something I always look for in a Japanese restaurant. If you're not into sushi, the hibachi fried rice is also pretty good! I'd say it's their staple, with sushi as a close second. They also do ramen on Wednesdays, though, it's just ok. The meat is kind of tough, almost rubbery, and they put a lot of corn in their ramen. Also, the staff here always seem like they're miserable. They give you a number and bring you your food. The drinks are self serve, and you're expected to put your dishes in the compartment above the trash. But not a lot of customers do that. read more

I was interested in trying this place out because I'ved been looking for a cool ramen noodle place, but I was honestly pretty disappointed. First off, they only serve ramen on wednesdays which is kind of annoying if you want ramen literally any other day of the week and its one of the only ramen/hibachi/sushi place near NIU's campus so yeah, disappointing. Next, to the actual food. I was excited to get the beef udon and the gyoza, but I was so appalled that my first bite of the beef udon tasted almost completely like fish broth due to the excess of fish cakes and soggy seaweed that I had not been made aware came with the udon. As someone who hates fish, it was definitely really rough to spend like 20$ on a meal that I ended up forcing myself to eat instead of being able to genuinely enjoy. The broth barely tasted of beef, pretty salty, and the beef pieces were overcooked and flavorless, basically just boiled beef plopped into the broth. Not much flavor besides fish and salt. The gyoza and the sauce it came with was a lot better, my only critique was that the gyoza was just so oily that it hurt my stomach and made me a little sick. The wait was also pretty long for a mostly empty restaurant, and the tables were kind of dirty. Pretty disappointing experience all in all. Fushi Yami has been one of my favorite restaurants for years. I pretty much go there for sushi anytime I drive to Dekalbut I am SUPER disappointed tonight. Like all things lately the prices have gone way up, which is understandable given our economy. What is not understandable is how the prices can go up SO much and yet their quality has gone way down. My favorite roll of all time is their drunken salmon roll. It is supposed to be topped with mayo, fish roe (the big ones that pop in your mouth) sweet onion and micro sprouts. I noticed the last 3 or 4 times I have ordered this roll that they have replaced the big roe with the less expensive, smaller roe. Although it does change the taste slightly, I know that times are hard. Tonight I got my order home (I live 40 minutes from Dekalb) only to discover that they not only substituted the small roe for the big roe, but the swapped out the the micro greens for finely chopped ROMAINE LETTUCE . Seriously? I would rather just not have the sprouts (if they didn't have them available) than to have to pick LETTUCE off my roll and lose half the roe in the process. This is unacceptable. Looks like I'm going to need to find a new favorite roll and a new sushi place because it's just not the same. read more
