Enjoying our meal!!

What do s not to love! Dressed like poor tourists we entered in. Lovely waiter with precious smile greeted us and seated us right away and we were seated at a very cozy booth. We chose Biryani rice, Butter Nan and Garlic Lamb. It was fantastic!! Everything was so tasty and wonderfully prepared. Unique in flavor and so complimentary. The large Kingfisher beer was an excellent choice as well to tame down the mouth!! Do try Omar Khayyam!!

We first visited here 17 years ago. It remained in our memory as the best Indian food we have had internationally. Yes, I visited India and have enjoyed their food in multiple countries. Most of my Indian palate has been satisfied in California. Each region has its own seasonings and this version tops them all, in our opinion. Thus we return here again today. As we approached the entry someone opened the door and we were immediately seated. Within moments the waiter came to take our order for drinks and brought us four chutneys. OMG! There are good chutneys at most every restaurant we go to and some are rather unremarkable. Here these have a variety of non-spicy to mildly spicy. And the other seasonings, I am sorry to say, are beyond my description and delicious! It took perhaps 10 minutes to receive our food. (By the way, they do not ask you if you want spiciness at the mild, medium or hot levels. One gets what one gets. I rate it as "Mild+". Ahhh . . . !

Omar Khayyam is a great Indian restaurant and although the prices are pretty steep, the food and service is excellent. I came here with my parents last year and we all thought it was amazing with authentic Indian dishes ranging from marinated sea bass to chicken Tikka Masala. I went for the Shami Kebab starter followed by the lamb Tikka. They didn't take long at all to arrive and tasted great when they did. All the meat which they use is of the highest quality and the lamb was tender with no chunks of fat or sinew whatsoever. Most mains cost at least £10 and side orders of rice or vegetables are about £3-4 each. It's not a cheap meal, but the food, service and general ambiance all make the cost well worth it.

I have this incredibly rude habit of walking past restaurants with large windows and glaring at the people eating. This is exactly what I did with Omar Khayyam and promptly told my boyfriend we had to try it. The restaurant is quite bright and spacious due to the large windows. Most Indians seem to feel dark and dingy, but not this one. The staff were very friendly and service prompt. The menu lists the usual Indian dishes you would expect, and there is a good selection. The price ranges up to around a tenner for a main, so it could get costly if you order a lot. I had a Biryani which came as a huge portion, it was so delicious I felt bad leaving half of it. The other half had a lamb Rogan Josh which he wolfed down as men do. I enjoyed the Poppadums, rice and naan bread that we had alongside it. I literally felt like if I was wearing a belt I would have to loosen to it. This restaurant is only two minutes walk from Haymarket Station so ideal if you are going to and from the station. They offer a set lunch meal also which would bring the price done significantly and definitely fill you up until tea time.

Peshwari naan, chicken tikka masala, saag paneer and basmati rice, Kingfisher beer. Nicely spiced.

Excellent food and service in an attractive setting. Prices are very reasonable. Spicing on chicken tikka masala was different than many Indian restaurants we've been to, but very tasty. Pashwari naan nicely done. Our server was super attentive to our needs. Acoustics are conducive to conversation. On a Thursday night, there were two big groups seated nearby but still no problem hearing my dinner companion. Definitely recommend.

We went here for dinner while visiting Edinburgh. We were greeted when we walked in and it was pretty busy. We were able to get a table and found the service the entire time to be excellent. The food was great and we both enjoyed the meal. I would say the naan was large and we ordered 2 we would have been fine with 1. However both were excellent. I would defiantly return to enjoy other dishes.

They kind of trick visitors into ordering more food. Unpleasant experience. I won't come back!

Wow, another Nepalese restaurant in city, never seen so many Nepalese restaurants in a city…read moreSince we were staying nearby, we decided to try a local restaurant instead of heading to the usual prime locations like Princes Street or the Royal Mile. Coming from the same region myself, I naturally connect with Nepalese food and am always eager to try authentic dishes whenever I get the chance... Seems, it is very popular, and The Khukuri has been an Edinburgh favorite for almost twenty years Nepalese food is often considered a combination of ingredients, flavors and cooking styles of a variety of cultures, including India. We ordered- Momo Jhol: never leave a chance to have momo at an authentic Nepalese joint. And it did not disappoint after all - 4/5 * Chicken Sekuwa: but it did. I know what sekuwa is, and it was far from that. Ofcourse I asked the serverbut the response was the usual, that We've adapted it to suit local tastes.- 2/5 * Lamb Biryani: not the biryani you guys would expect, it's more of lamb curry with rice Ofcourse, I was expecting more in terms of food taste, but overall owner's warmth, quick service, and even every server is there to help you, doesn't matter that table belongs to him/her or not Feel like home Food - 3/5 Overall - 4/5

Very nice dinner and relaxing atmosphere. Food is spicy and tasty. Recommend trying the dumplings.read more

We had finally narrowed it down to Indian food but we still couldn't choose a restaurant. I'll be honest my vote was for a different restaurant so I wasn't too excited about going to the place I didn't choose. I know I was being a brat but this review gets better. Because I came in wanted to prove that my choice would have been better (again so bratty). When we walked in everyone working was so nice and friendly they immediately melted my anger away. I ordered the mango lassi to drink and for my entree I got the paneer marsala. Both items were delicious. I do wish I could have controlled the spice a bit more but that could have been on me and I may have misunderstood. This restaurant wasn't the cleanest, it wasn't gross by any means it just seemed like they were short on staff and didn't have time to clean the bathrooms that day. All in all I really came around and had to eat my own words Zest was delicious and I am very glad I lost!!!

We of course started checking out the menu which had a number of options. We started with appetizers which we get a number of. We went with the Lovely Garlic Mushrooms, Sabzi Samosa, Chicken Pakora, and the Himalayan Crushed Chilli Chicken which is an entrée but it sounded good so we got it for the table. All the appetizers were good but what really stuck out to me what the Chicken Pakora, and the Himalayan Crushed Chilli Chicken. I had never had Chicken Pakora but it was great. They were perfectly fried so crispy and the batter had so much flavor. Will for sure be getting me Chicken Pakora in the future. The Himalayan Crushed Chilli Chicken was also very good. I will say this is not like the fried Chilli Chicken I have had at other Indian restaurants but this was full of amazing flavor. It's also marked as a Hot dish but it wasn't over powering at all. For my entrée I will say I ended up going pretty basic and went with Chicken Tikka Massalam but it was just calling my name that night. I comes mild but asked if I could get it hot. Our server did look at me like I was crazy but he said they would give it a try. I will say the rest of our party was a little more adventurous. Once my Chicken Tikka Massalam came out I got into it and it was very good. My sister got the Korma with Chicken (at least that's what she ordered) but she was given Korma with Lamb. I tried hers and I liked it even more then my Tikka and she loved my Tikka she we traded. I'm glad I did too. The Lamb so so tender for sure will be doing this more too.I will say we were a little nervous at Zest when first ordering but after our meal everyone talked about how much we enjoyed everything. For sure a good spot for Indian!
