After living in Batavia for a few years, it is always nice to go back and visit some of my favorite spots. Oliver's is at the top of that list. Do you like candy? Do you like ice cream? This is the spot to go. We came in for a quick stop to grab some ice cream on the way home. We also had to pick up some candy too because I mean, we were here, might as well! This place always feels like walking into Wonka's factory. There are so many different kinds of chocolate and candy that there is something for everyone on that front. Then the ice cream parlor is pure nostalgia and there are so many flavors offered. I got a milkshake and it was made perfectly, topped with whipped cream and a chocolate wafer. The staff here is always friendly and helpful. The vibes are so happy in here. I suggest this spot to everyone looking for some sweets. read more

This was a recommendation from our hotel because they offer the famous New York sponge candy so we had to stop in. Super happy that we did. We found the candy counter in the back and were greeted kindly. We were offered a taste of the sponge candy before we picked out our favorite and that was helpful. We choose the peanut butter, raspberry chocolate and dark chocolate. The candy was light and honey comb in your mouth. Very reasonable prices for the amount of candy in the bag. A lot of chocolate that's for sure. I have childhood memories of sponge candy in orange which you have to venture outside of Rochester for. I was pleased to see that now you can get maple and peanut butter flavors. I was saddened that there was many more milk chocolate options than dark chocolate. And no dark chocolate orange. An absolute must stop location when in the area. Small, local, cozy feel. Fresh chocolates and a wide variety of candies. Staff is very friendly and can help point you in the direction of special treats that sound good to you. They have ice cream as well, which I haven't tried but always looks good. This most recent trip I picked up some English toffee coffee k-cups, which were lighter roast than I enjoy, but good. Why I really came was for the fresh dark chocolate sponge candy! While picking up sponge candy I saw they now have a peanut butter milk chocolate sponge candy variety, and it is so spectacular - a must try!! The aroma of chocolate fills the air as you walk into Oliver's. Over the years they have expanded to include an ice cream parlor & I was surprised to see they sell coffee too. They had a maple bacon flavor available to sample. There was only one cashier & it took some time to checkout, but she was nice. So many great choices. I caught some "grief" for bringing home an imitator sponge candy. to quote the offended one as I tried to explain that I had to leave earlier than Oliver's hours was "If you don't care enough to get the good stuff don't embarrass me with something less." This institution is a must stop if you are traveling through Batavia! Even though I love ice cream I have to admit that I have never tried their ice cream because it is all about the candy or more specifically THE CHOCOLATE!!! The rating loses a star because Olivers has always seemed to be overpriced! When it hits the wallet it hurts ... if you are l Ike me you'll be tempted to spend a monthly car payment on the chocolate at Oliver's. The first time we went we got some truffles, gummy worms, and chocolate covered Oreos! BOMBBBB. Great little chocolate shop in Batavia NY! The building is super cute and will catch your eye when you drive by, especially at night when it is all lit up. They have a variety of homemade chocolates, from fudge, to sponge candy to all sorts of different things. The prices seem very typical of most chocolate shops. I have purchased the sponge candy as a gift in the past, and the recipient really enjoyed it. I have also visited and enjoyed their ice cream shop. They have a great variety of homemade ice cream flavors, in addition to the normal ice cream parlor options of shakes, sundaes, etc. I got a peanut butter sundae which was really good. My husband got a banana milk shake, which was rather thin for his liking but still had a good flavor. I'm sure we'll be back in the future for more ice cream or for chocolate, for ourselves or gifts. I haven't purchased from Oliver's Candies for about 5-6 years because I had one of the worst customer service experiences with them. 'Had been a regular customer of Oliver's mail order operation for several years. For a holiday, I ordered quite a few chocolates to be shipped to my nephew. The chocolates didn't arrive on time, and appeared to have been lost by the courier. -- The courier which Oliver's had chosen, and for which I'd paid Oliver's a shipping fee. When I called Oliver's to politely tell them about the problem, they couldn't have cared less. I asked if I could speak with a manager, and he couldn't have cared less either. His attitude was something like 'tough luck for you.' However, when I persisted, he said that his boss would call me back. Of course, he never did. The chocolates were finally delivered to my nephew about a week late, and I've never bought from Oliver's again. My problem was not so much the delivery delay, but the way that Oliver's handled -- or rather, DIDN'T handle -- it. The reason that I'm writing this review so many years later is because I just saw Oliver's candies on Amazon. I still won't buy from them because Oliver's doesn't stand behind their products, and they treat their customers poorly. read more

I would highly recommend this business. I live in Cleveland Ohio and ordered candy from them on April 13 and I didn't pay for express delivery. Three days later on the 16th I had the candy. Not only do they provide super service but the candy was delicious as well, it's one of my wife's favorites. I was in Batavia looking for something else when "...what to my wondering eyes should appear..." but Oliver's Candies! I was sucked into Oliver's like Dorothy's House into a cyclone, and my inner 5 year old became the proverbial little kid in a candy store. Oh, boy! Champion! Dad, can I have a quarter? Oh, wait, back to reality. Sigh. At least during the Covid madness, Champion was wearing a mask. It happened to be October when I visited, so the store was decked out in Halloween décor, along with a myriad of Halloween treats for the costumed beggars in y'all's neighborhood. (Obscure reference to Vincent Price.) Down the aisles...so many choices - mints, non-pareils, French cremes, peanut brittle, chocolate-covered-almost-anything, mints, sponge candy, clusters, chocolate lollipops, jells, oh gosh, too many to list! AH-HA! Licorice! All kinds of black licorice including licorice jelly beans (so I don't have to pick them all out of the jelly bean mix) and licorice laces. You don't like licorice? Don't worry, there are only several dozen other choices for you. Malted Milk balls jumped into my basket, right next to the licorice jelly beans. I had to remember my best girl, too. (Don't tell her, okay? It's a surprise! Also don't tell her just in case they don't make it home.) I appreciate the small details that make life easier, too. Oliver's uses tape to close the bags, the kind of packaging tape that drives you nuts trying to get the *&$#! tape off the bag. Oliver's puts a little V-shaped piece of paper at the end so you can easily peel the tape open and off the bag! Yay! Oliver's is not a huge operation (like several you can think of) but a local operation that employs a lot of local folks. It's been a Batavia institution since 1932 and you can even tour the place. Was in a few months ago for the Christmas season and LOVED IT HERE! The atmosphere, the candy, the great service, and the childhood nostalgia! I had the pleasure of being helped by an amazing young man named Garett who had a great enthusiasm and went out of his way to help my wife and I. I truly couldn't have asked for a better experience. The sponge candy is a MUST! Garett gave us a sample I was skeptical at first since I had never had it but now I will be a life long customer and order frequently. I cannot get enough! Even though it was crazy busy Garett still made the time to help us and made great conversation. He made us feel welcomed and important. I'd give a zero if i could. This is the worst candy i have ever tried, there's no flavor and the sugar isn't even dissolved, it feels like eating cubes of sugar. I contacted the company and was told basically sorry, but too bad. Offered no credit or refund. I would never recommend their chocolate not only is it horrible, the pieces are tiny, maybe the size of a penny. Just a huge waste of money. My mom grew up in Batavia and Oliver's Candies was a huge part of her youth. She grew up, joined the Army, adopted my brother, then married my dad. Then I came along. And then my brother. And we all settled about a half hour to forty minutes from Batavia. Not really that far, but it seemed like moons away from where we lived. That's why when we did travel into Batavia to visit my grandma, and Oliver's Candies was a stop on the way home, this was a very, very special treat. Oliver's Sponge Candy. That was liquid gold to me. Part of the reason I loved it so much, I'm guessing, is because it was such a rarity that I ever had any of it. I grew up, moved away, went to college, and Al Gore invented the Internet. And then after dial-up and chat rooms and AOL came along, someone said, "Let's make it faster." (George Bush?) Anyway, a lightbulb went off and I thought, "Hey, I wonder if OLIVER'S HAS A WEBSITE!?!" (This was a very exciting thought to me!) Guess what? They did! And I learned I could order Oliver's Chocolates on the Internet! Oh, happy day! I graduated from college, got a job like a big girl, moved around a bit, met a guy, had a family, moved all over the world, and ended up back in Buffalo. I learned that, Holy Crap! OTHER places make sponge candy?! It's not JUST Oliver's? (The thought never occurred to me it wasn't their special secret.) The sponge candy near me is good. Really good. And some of it is possibly better. But Oliver's tastes like childhood to me. It tastes like home. So when I moved back home and realized a half hour isn't so long when you have your very own grown-up driver's license, I started going more regularly. This review is strictly for the business' online ordering and delivery service. My wife's favorite candy is sponge candy. The candy store business I had previously ordered this from stopped all shipping services due to covid, so it had been a while since I bought any from the Buffalo, NY, area. The sponge candy on the west coast does not compare (at least what we've found) to the candy from this traditional hub within our country. I ordered sponge candies, as a gift to my wife, for both this past Christmas and for a recent birthday from Oliver's, which I researched and found online. During the Christmas rush, two weeks before the holiday, I received the candies in time. I appreciated them getting the package to me on time, although a shout out should go to the USPS as well. My wife was excited, as it had been a couple years. The package was well boxed and included a reusable ice pack (still cold upon arrival). She found the sponge candies had held up very well, were fresh and quite delicious. Earlier this month I made my second order, requesting an ice pack due to abnormally hotter than average weather in Inland Southern California. The package arrived within days, from across the country. This time however the ice pack was not cool by the time it arrived, which caused some (not all) of the chocolate covered candies to adhere to one another. That's not to blame the business though, but the dang heat out this way. I'm going to speculate they don't ship during the summer months, at least across the country, because of this potentially happening on a regular basis (the original business I had purchased from in the past did not ship in summer). Oliver's Candies is the real deal. The region has some great candy shops and tis is definitely one of them. Their house made candies are the best you can get ranging from their chocolates to the delicate and delicious ribbon candy. Personally, I am partial to the caramel corn. A nice stop while in Batavia. I had never been there and always wanted to go. They have all the usual candy and a number of different things as well as gift shop items and a nice assortment of ice cream. After everything I heard, I was excited about stopping here. The candy was all prepackaged or boxed. I was expecting a long case filled with candy that you could mix and match. The chocolates were all top quality but, to me, the sight of a chocolate case is enticing and I'm more apt to spend more buying a few pieces of many candles than a prepackaged box of one type. read more

What sort of ice cream should you get here? Vanilla, or chocolate? There can only be one answer, and it is obvious. Get Oliver's Twist! Oliver's is the kind of place that only comes along once in a lifetime. Okay, I can't back that up, but it is a super cute chocolate shop which really adds a lot to the scenery in the otherwise average town of Bat Aviation. I'm not a fan of their chocolate (too sweet, not milky enough, too chalky, not American enough), but I think their ice cream is good, and they have sponge candy ice cream too, home made, which is good. I wouldn't say it's excellent, because the chocolate in the sponge candy isn't my fave, but it's homemade and you must try it if you like this sort of thing.
