They will remove the shell and clean it for you too! This was one of our favorite places to get crab along the coast of Oregon. The flavors were so delish! read more

Fresh, LIVE and cooked crab! Kerpow! He will prepare the freshly cooked and chilled crab for you. It's served with lemon and cocktail sauce. No need for the sauce. Also, right next to it is the grill with the soups and sandwich melts. They will bring the food to your table. Need to go to other nearby establishments for drinks. We had an evening stop in after plenty of sightseeing and we had the crab bags. I will start by saying that the Gumbo is the most amazing gumbo I've ever had and their food was absolutely amazing. Old couple behind the counter noticed us but didn't want to even look up at us. It was just us right after the couple ahead of us left after they got their order. The place had foul bathrooms and quiet. I was close enough I could hear them breath so we left. We were just passing by for lunch and there's more options around. read more

Super friendly and a nice spot. This is in a renovated pier 39 that is right at the mouth of the Columbia. We were there during COVID times, so it was nice to be out in the fresh air and out of the crowds. The owner there was super friendly and helpful, we learned a lot about the local cuisine and picked up some nice sized crabs. I couldn't help it, we also got some souvenirs too because he was so generous. read more

Went out of my way to get here; told me they couldn't serve us because they aren't really a restaurant. And couldn't sell oysters because attendant said they didn't have a shucking knife?? Literally offered no options to eat anything there on sight, and as the girl reinforced "We are a market, not a restaurant" read more

I LOVE that this place is away from the touristy downtown traffic. It's located at Pier 39. You can drive your car over an old wooden pier; very narrow, but wide enough to have 2 respectfully cautious cars pass each other without having to wait. Parking is limited, but we didn't have a problem finding a parking spot on a weekday afternoon. We wondered around a met a friendly man named "Tom" who knew where to find our requested fresh live oysters.... I thought he was awfully generous with his time as he escorted us to the an area that opened up into a small restaurant looking set-up, right over the water. Then he proceeded to get behind the counter and took our seafood order *lol* Yes, Tom is the fisherman, the owner, the cook (pre-covid) and the cashier! I ordered 1, then changed my mind and ordered 2 dozen live fresh oysters ($16/dozen). Tom inquired on my transport details and I told him that we had a 6hr drive straight through. He seemed concerned (due to fresh live seafood). Without asking, Tom hooked me up BIG Time and handed me a big 'ol plastic bag with ice at the bottom, then a thick net contains the live oysters. He advised me to add more ice immediately before heading home AND don't seal the bag, let it breath. I had no idea. I probably would have knotted the top of the plastic bag and continued on my way. Tom basically saved my oysters from suffocating on our trip home *Whew, Thanks Tom* :D They are not preparing hot food at this time, but the deals on super Fresh high quality seafood is are better than expected (changes daily, with advanced notice you can make requests and see what happens). You never really know what you have until you crack the shell... Every single oyster had lots of juice, so I KNOW that they were super Fresh. I will be back for more *** 5-stars *** read more

Really not sure. The staff was extremely nice. The food was good. The batter for the fish and chips needed something added maybe more butter milk and salt. Quick service, for the location it was clean, and the bathroom was really scary. Maybe that's what it was... the bathroom. I guess some people have sharpies the their pockets and have a lot to say when doing their business. read more

Hanthorn is definitely a place I can recommend over and over again! They close early though so we weren't able to catch them for dinner - I wish we did. We stayed in a suite upstairs on Pier 39 and was able to pop by before we checked out the next morning. This place was definitely an experience - I felt like Anthony Boudain eating at a crab stand on the pier. We ordered the crab melt, currently not on the menu cause Tom (owner) got tired of making them and decided to erase it off the white board. But he did say that if you want something, just ask! Most likely he'll be able to accommodate and make it! And boy we were glad we asked cause the crab melt was delicious! Full of mayo and cheddar cheese, fresh crab was folded in and baked on top of some bread! Rich and fantastic!!! While we waited for the crab melt, I ordered 3 fresh Willapa Bay oysters - what makes them special, they are grown as "floating oysters" and not on the sand, which gives them a fresh non-gritty flavor. I liked them so much, I asked for 3 more to make my half dozen. Tom was chatting with us and kept shucking them for me - you can tell he was passionate and very proud of them. Don't ask for Tobasco! You don't need it and it'll just offend Tom! Just some lemon juice and you're good to go! I could eat these all day!!! Tom, the owner, was friendly; cracking jokes (some which we didn't understand) and giving us pointers on where to eat! You can tell he has a passion for food, very proud of the food he offers, and is a local to Astoria. He also serves crab cakes, but make sure to order these in advance cause they are not readily available. He has these large crab tanks so if you want fresh crab, live or cooked, this is the place to get them! They can pack it on ice to-go or cook it on the spot and serve it to you on-site (approx 30 mins cook time). Thanks for such delicious food and hospitality! We will definitely visit again if we're ever back in the area and recommend this place to all our friends! read more

For my money, this is one of Astoria's true gems. Being from Louisiana (although currently residing in New Mexico) I grew up eating oysters and I've been doing my best to eat my weight in oysters while staying here in Oregon. Unfortunately for me, most establishments seem to want to serve "oyster shooters" these days. Not how the good Lord intended man to consume oysters by my way of thinking. Tom thinks so too. You order them and he shucks them for you, right then and there. Good and fresh Willapa Bay oysters. They are open when they're open. Try and catch them when you can. It's worth it if you do. And spend some time talking with Tom. He's a good guy and a pleasure to talk to. read more

This place is great! Very hard to find but worth the effort. My wife and I had some freshly shucked oysters, crab cocktail, and their famous crab melt. Was to die for! Owner is great and wonderful to talk to. Knowledgeable about seafood, the area, and just a warm and pleasant guy. If you're looking for great seafood, this is your place in Astoria. The owner even invited us back to try a freshly caught salmon that evening. The picture is of that salmon. Wow! read more

Took a visit to Hanthorn crab this past Friday and was not disappointed. After some entertaining banter with the owner, my group of 4 devoured 2 cooked dungeoness crabs outdoors overlooking the mighty Columbia. Our favorite stop of the entire Oregon Coast trip. We were staying at an Airbnb on the pier and just so happen to walk by Tom's 'corner' - thank goodness we did because it was by far thee best oysters we've ever had. Tom, the owner, shucked them fresh right in front of us, the coolest guy ever (but don't tell him I told you that haha) - we also got the crab cocktail and jeez that also made us swoon it was sooo good. This past Saturday my friend and I dropped over $100 on two cooked crabs and two dozen oysters. It was all packed on ice and we left it that way until we were ready to shuck the oysters. They were filthy which should have been our warning. We proceeded and both ended up very ill. I will never purchase anything from this place again. read more

We happened upon the Hanthorn Crab Company today after searching for a small place with delicious food. We love good, fresh food and we found just what we wanted. Tom, the owner, is a sweet, sarcastic Astoria Native. He knows about Astoria History and I would call him an expert in Crab, Oysters, salmon and clam chowder. Simply amazing. We ate outside on the dock with plastic cups and plastic spoons, but the crab melt came on China with a metal fork. We can't say enough good things about this place. We LOVE IT!!! We will be back. We wouldn't hold Tom to any tight schedule if we were you. Call first if you wonder if he is open. He sometimes closes early if business is slow. Thank you Tom! This place may just be for the experience. The main guy running the place was nice enough....interesting sense of humor. We asked to order crab and he kept questioning us, like he didn't really want our business or was hoping we'd leave so he could close? The crab cocktail was ok. Nothing special. The boiled crab doesn't come with any butter or seasoning, it's rather bland. But it was our son's first time ripping into a crab, sitting on the deck of the pier with a view of the water. The best! Highest praise! And I don't just refer to the owner, Tom, who is an Astoria treasure all by himself. Every effort is made by Tom to bring you the freshest seafood there is on the NW coast (no fried food here) including crab and oysters on the half shell. If there is a line, it is worth waiting. If you are lucky, Tom might share some of his stories with you while you enjoy some of the tastiest clam chowder, oysters or the best crab melt you have ever eaten. It only seems to be hidden, it's right behind Rogue on Pier 39. No frills dining, but you won't notice after digging in. And if you walk through the big doors near the counter when the weather is dry, you will find a small deck with picnic tables overlooking fishing boats, sea life, birds, and the beautiful Columbia River. Family and I are on vacation and decided to stop in for some oysters. We love oysters and take the opportunity to try them out when available. This place is amazing, we ordered a dozen on the half shell and had them out on the pier overlooking the water. Some of the best oysters we have ever had. They were great, fresh and creamy. They were so good we got a second dozen, no sauce needed. We also tried the Korean smoked oysters. They were the best smoked oysters we have ever had! I would recommend anyone looking for great fresh oysters to stop in and get a dozen. read more

When I come all the way down from Seattle to see all of my hometown has to offer I always stop in and have to at least experience the host Tom Hilton.... he will explain the process, tell you stories of years gone by, and make you a fantastic seafood meal. The most generous friendly people working here. They spent a long time with us chatting about the options, then gave us a freebie to take with us - some of the most delicious smoked salmon I've ever tried. Definitely buy some and I imagine everything else they sell is the same fantastic quality. My friend bought whole crab that they cleaned and packed on ice for her. Stopped in Astoria on the way to Seattle and had to stop here after reading reviews, it did not disappoint. The place is tucked far back in what's seems to be a parking garage all the way in the back, the owner runs the place and is really friendly. Highly disappointed in the new seafood market! Bought a cooked crab and when I opened the bag it smelled super fishy and after being cracked the meat smelled like rotten eggs! In the garbage it went. I really hope the crab cake dough is not this bad as I am very hesitant to try it! read more

She did not return to check if we needed anything after the food was served. There was an older gentleman (may be the owner) who showed us to our seats and was particularly concerned about our experience at the store. It was a nice touch. Ambiance: nice soft lighting, noise level was moderate. I consider this place good enough to eat my meal comfortably and able to enjoy the foods without too much noise.

I came in and placed an order for a big party I was having, and when I arrived they had it all ready to go in a box with lots of ice. The smoked scallops and oysters were a huge hit; I made a crab-mac with their fresh picked shelled dungeoness, and shrimp cocktail with Oregon shrimp. 10 lbs of mixed manila/butter clams all fresh, all popped, yummy. Great friendly service. Prices are, well, not inexpensive, but you get what you pay for!

I loved the peanut sesame dressing and noodles in this salad but wished there was more chicken. Mayak Egg Noodle Bowl, $8.99- My husband picked this salad for himself but I didn't have any. He thought it was good and appreciated something fresh, as his bowl had shredded cabbage, like my salad, and cucumbers and shredded carrots. Pumpkin Pie, $6.99- My husband saw this small pumpkin pie and decided to get it because he is such a big fan of it. I actually don't like pumpkin as much as when I was much younger. But I did like this pie and thought the flavors were well balanced, not too overly sweet. ---------------------------------------- (Total= $24.97) I really appreciated that the little dining area (there is also an outdoor dining area as well but because it had rained previously, we opted to sit inside) had plastic bowls and plates available for you to put your food in. Then after I mixed it, I just put it back in the plastic container and only left about 1/3 of the salad in my bowl to eat. Don't let that discourage you from eating there. When we walked in, there was one table left. Always a good sign when a place is busy, especially during the off season. There's generally a reason why the other places are empty. In addition, there was no smell from the fish counter. A sign that everything is fresh. Honest, you really don't even notice there is a counter there once you sit down. We went with a half-dozen oysters on the half shell, Dominic's Fish and Chips, which is the fresh local catch of the day. Today it happened to be Rockfish, always one of my favorites, the Shrimp and Chips, and The Cioppino, which is a seafood stew. This has clams, mussels, fish, prawns, and crab in a tomato sauce. There's a decent selection of beer as well. First, I want to say these were some of the best oysters I've had, fresh out of Willapa Bay. We should have ordered a dozen or two. These came with some lemon and fresh horseradish. Try the horseradish! The oysters tasted great with nothing on them or with a little fresh horseradish. The fish was fried perfectly, golden brown, not oily, and not overcooked. You can easily tell this was fresh Rockfish. The shrimp were fried perfectly as well. The Cioppino was amazing! Again, all the seafood was prepared perfectly. But it was the flavor of the stew that really stood out. This is a dish not to be overlooked and tastes great on a cold day. The food here is outstanding! Though this is a combination market / restaurant, the atmosphere felt comfortable and inviting. The service was great as well. Everyone here was friendly. If you're looking for some great fresh seafood, the Fish Peddler is a must eat and there are plenty of items on the menu that can bring you back multiple times. Honestly, I hope we come back here before we leave town.
