On our way back from Old Rag, we stopped by Old Trade Brewery & Cidery since we wanted a drink before going back to NoVa for dinner. The views here are very nice. The nice fall breeze was perfect with the gradual sunset that was happening at the same time this past Saturday evening. We took a lot of nice pictures here. BLACK BRIAR CIDER (PINT) - 9 This was pretty fruity and pleasant with blackberry notes. One of my friends had a sip and found it to be artificial, but I drank my cider pretty quickly and enjoyed it. You can taste the alcohol subtly, but not enough to make me gag. I'm not from the area so I wasn't aware, but the tax (sales + Culpeper County food & beverage) rate is 11.3% which is intense. Views views views! Wow we were blown away by the beautiful scenery surrounding this brewery. Can't beat a kid friendly brewery, lots of fun play structures for kids to keep them occupied for a few hours - a sand pit, a big wooden boat with slides, a bouncing castle etc. my kids had a blast! Unfortunately for us, the adults, we didn't enjoy the beers and food as much. Food was not it, we had the pulled pork nachos- the chip/pulled pork ratio was not good, barely any meat, flavor was ok-ish. And also ordered a hamburger because you can't go wrong with a hamburger- well we were wrong! The bread tasted stale and the patty was flavorless, the french fries were over salted, we took two bites and couldn't finish it. I had the peach cider which was pretty decent and my husband had a sour beer which he didn't like and another beer before we decided to call it a day. At least the kids had fun :)! read more

Love this spot - for drinks, food, the play area for kids (indoor and outdoor) and even a dog park. There is often live music or misc events being held and never too much of a crowd. What a gorgeous farm it's located within with tons of areas for the kids and dogs to play in. Fun, down to earth, family friendly brewery et al. They've got axe throwing! A dog park! A play ground! Roaming roosters! It did get a little loud when several families with kids arrived, but the front of the brewery offers seating that's further away from the playground. Parking lot was small and I've got to imagine it gets absolutely packed on weekends. My sister and I hung out, enjoying the atmosphere and our drinks. They've got a decent looking food menu, but we didn't order anything. I had no idea what I wanted and they were so nice about giving me tastes and recommendations until I landed on the white sangria. My sister had the sour which was also pretty good. Looks like they've got a set up for fire pits in the evenings and once the weather gets cooler. I would definitely come back again. read more

One of my must visit places when i'm 'home'. I make sure to work my trip around a Thursday - Sunday just so I can take the family to OTB for an afternoon / evening. Such a relaxing vibe, grab your cider, sit at one of the many tables and take in the unmatched views! If you're looking for more fun, there's plenty of that too. Axe throwing is a must and easy to register for through the website. Plenty of room to roam for dogs & kiddos, with play structures too. I'm not a beer drinker but I haven't met one of their ciders that I don't like. The food is always delicious they have a rotating menu. Came here with my wife and her family. We really enjoyed this place, the ciders and brews were unique, and the views were rurally scenic. Parking was easy, there's a grass/stone lot that we had no trouble finding a space in on a Sunday afternoon. The entrance was well marked. Though this place does seem to be pretty entrenched in the middle of nowhere, the drive was scenic. I really enjoyed the Kalb Pilsner, while my wife loved the Nocturnal. We had two flights: one of ciders and the other of local beers. Both were pretty great, I don't care for IPAs, but my father in law said the Foggy Morning IPA was good. The food was good but nothing special. I had a cheeseburger which mostly resembled something I'd make at home. I have neither complaints nor raves. The focus is much more on the ciders and uniqueness of their brews. read more

4/5, June 2022. We finally managed to get out here after hearing about it this place a few years ago. They have a good setup for handling groups and quite a few people without it feeling packed. They have an on site playground and a dog park. They serve beer, cider and wine. We tried all of the available beers and several of the ciders. I would say they had a number good options for most palates but nothing that stood out as exceptional. The setup did allow for you to enjoy your visit whether you wanted to listen to the band out back or have a more sedate experience out front. Not something you can find at every brewery. Had a nice time here, stopped in with my parents for some dinner and a drink. We were there in the winter when it was actively snowing. Bartenders were kind, food was good but priced a bit higher than I thought it was worth, nice play area for kids. Very relaxing atmosphere. Ciders were decent and enjoyable but nothing to rave about. I was super annoyed with one element - fix your door so that it closes on its own and latches. Every single person that came through there gave the door a small push to close it as they walked in and walked away, and it inevitable didn't latch, and blew open. When its snowing outside, it made it miserable to be sitting anywhere nearby and made inside freezing. So, we spent our entire meal getting up to close it, or pointing to everyone that entered and told them to please latch the door. Excellent visit! It's a little farther than I like to go on my brewery trips, but the samples made it worth while. OTB had its soft opening in mid 2017 and to an extent is still finding its way. They didn't yet have a reliable list of 'house' beers that will always be on tap, but as they learn about their audience their beer list will stabilize (with a rotating lineup to add to it). But my service was spot on, and the location was family friendly (even with a kiddie playground section). I tried almost their entire assortment and came away very impressed by several. Their Trappist beer was a little sweet but very yummy, and I liked their Holiday and Porter beers. While I normally like sour beers, theirs was more sweet than sour (which the brewer admitted was not his intention, but will try again later). The biggest surprise was the apple beer. No, this isn't a cider - its a beer made with some apples added in. I asked the brewer and he plans on making this place a cidery as well sometime in the future, which I find to be very exciting. read more

Visited Old Trade Brewery on Sunday of their Grand Opening Weekend. The place was semi-busy when I arrived mid-afternoon. It was a very warm day outside - and it was on the verge of being to warm inside the building. Apparently they have AC, but for whatever reason, they were not using it. I would have preferred they had it on. There was not much selection to taste during my visit - as they had gone through a lot of beer during the previous day. I ordered a tasting flight of the remaining four beers: Banana Boat Hefeweizen (5.6% ABV) Sara Berliner Weisse (4.7% ABV) Sunrise Pale Ale (6.0% ABV) Junior Porter (5.7% ABV) All four beers were well executed from a flavor profile perspective. I don't typically order Hefeweizen's or Berliner Weisse outside of tasting flights - but both were good beers. My fave Ale of the day was the Sunrise Pale Ale - enough so that I ordered a pint of it after finishing my tasting flight. I got to meet Garrett, one of the owners and brewer - super nice guy. We got to chat quite a bit during my visit. I enjoyed hearing his tales of the brewery. He took me back for a quick tour of the brewing area as well. During my visit, there was a musician performing in the corner - he was pretty good. There is a small dedicated play area inside for children - as well as an old-school popcorn machine. Got the $10 flight and loved everything I got. Not a huge beer drinker but everything has good depth and flavours, not too hoppy. My favorite is the English Strong Bitter. Views are good here even if the trees and grapes haven't come in yet and staff is really nice. But, then again, I really needed to sit outside since the loud hard rock music that was playing was giving me a headache. Most of these breweries are loud, I get that - large open spaces with lots of people and plenty of hard surfaces - it's going to be noisy. Why make that worse by playing loud music that becomes a background irritant instead of an enjoyable sound? OTB is my idea of heaven! The vistas from the farm are stunning. Inside, it's cozy and warm, dogs are welcome, and the selection of in-house ciders and beers are exceptional. I got a flight of ciders, and all of them were outstanding. The French fries are homemade and absolutely delicious. Aside from a growler, you can get a 24-oz can -- made on the spot from their taps -- of your favorite libation to take with you. This is my new favorite place! read more

Great place for families. There's a nice play yard and sandbox far enough away so you can enjoy your drink and the music, but close enough so you can see your kid. It's also fenced in that area and far from the parking lot. They have some menu items (hot dog, fried shrimp) and lots of variety of drinks--wine, beer, cider. There is a patio with seating and some shade, and picnic tables with umbrellas. Lots of farm land to look at, so you can escape the city. Lovely, helpful ladies at the bar. There is a bathroom, although I think there's only one and I don't think there's a changing table. There's also a few chickens running around, but they weren't bothersome. read more

Garrett, one of the co-owners, was knowledgeable and passionate about the beer he was brewing. The space is gorgeous with beautiful views. The tasting room is the biggest of all the culpeper breweries and has great space for entertaining larger groups. The beers were great and they had a small children's area with toys and games that my son loved. I would highly recommend people come out for a great beer and an awesome atmosphere/environment. Came upon this brewery in Brandy Station, VA...a bit off the beaten path but sure worth it...great beers...AND how can anyone go wrong giving business to a brewery (Old Trade) owned by a New Englander, who has a N.E. Patriots sign proudly displayed inside the brewery. Garrett Thayer owns the farm and brewery...Originally from Taunton, MA (ancestors founded the town), other ancestors owned 4,000 acres of land in Vermont! Beer is great, views wonderful, food served, too. Garrett was kind enough to give me his own farm produced honey, knowing I collect honey from all over the world. Old Trade is in a great location, as others have said, and their beer is decent. None of the offerings we tasted (six) were really to my personal liking. They weren't horrible or even bad, just not my favorites. They have a nice facility, and we chose to sit outside to enjoy the view. They were playing a SiriusXM station with a pretty narrow audience that I think may have been a mix of 90s grunge rock and heavy metal. The sort of stuff you either like or hate. It would be much nicer to have music a broader range of people would enjoy. I love the farm brewery concept, but hate that places like Old Trade allow their customers' kids to run free all over the place. If you're bringing your kids to a brewery, at least have the courtesy to entertain them and keep them from getting underfoot of everyone else. If you're allowing kids at your brewery, set and enforce ground rules. In short, decent beer and beautiful location, but kids run amok and the music is loud and potentially really obnoxious depending on your taste. It wasn't at all relaxing for us and we won't be back. read more

A friend and I drove an hour to check out this brewery on the recommendation of a friend. Absolutely worth the drive! We didn't get to enjoy everything as it was cold and rainy that day, but it's a cute building. I tried a 6 beer flight and liked all of them. We ate buffalo chicken fries which were crazy good. Love this place! I don't drink beer at all. I'm a cider person, and they have some GOOD cider! (Try the apricot!) I usually go here with beer drinkers though, and they have always had nothing but compliments too. One friend said their sangria is amazing but I have yet to try it. The atmosphere inside is usually nice, with plenty of tables for groups large and small. (The one time it wasn't, it looked like a bunch of families were having a party there. Not the fault of the brewery, but when I go to a place like that, I don't want kids running around and hanging off the back of my chair.) They have an xbox and a few board games for people to play, which is nice. They do have a decent food menu that they mix up a bit. I am sad though, that the perogies are no longer on the menu. Those were killer. If management reads this, I have only two suggestions: more board games, and bring back the perogies! read more
