Heavy sigh... My first pizza from Old School was delightful. Amount of toppings? Check. Distribution of sauce and cheese? Just right. Not overcooked, not undercooked? Check. Just moved to Oly and was searching for my new go-to places so I thought, great, excellent pizza place - all set. Or so it seemed. The 3-4 times since then have been no where near that first experience, sadly. There are two main issues. One, attention to the making of the pizza. Either the cooks are careless or, more likely, poorly trained. Sauce needs to have good even coverage - within an inch or inch and a half of the crust edge. Cheese distribution is even more important. If it is not touching the crust as a way to anchor the cheese as it melts, everything just pools to the center as it cooks. That leaves the enjoyer of the pizza (me) having a couple of first bites that are okay and then over half of the pizza concentrically with dry crust that has no toppings. Where did the toppings go? All gooped up in the center. I had to throw up half of my large two topping pizza due to it being tasteless crust only. I've worked in the pizza world for longer than perhaps I should have so, while I waited for my pizza, I watched the cook on the makeline and knew I was doomed. Making a pizza is not an art - the artistic elements have to do with your dough ingredients, sauce seasonings, selection of quality ingredients, and such. Constructing a pizza is a skill that anyone can learn, they just need instruction and consistent attention to that construction. Secondly, again, either an issue with the cook(s) or a management decision to noticeably decrease the quantity of the toppings. For a two item pizza, I should be able to taste the sausage let alone SEE it. Aargh. So, so disappointed. My brain, unbidded, went to the thought of asking for a job application so I could get in and make my own pizza as well as support the staff to do the same. Alas, almost no one can make a mortgage payment as a pizza chef and by the time I retire I won't be old school cool enough to work there. Back to making pizza at home I guess. Love you folks and support your presence but what happened to my first time experience?? OR, just tell me who the best cooks are and I'll make a personal request next time I call. read more

Stopped here for a quick bite on our way to Tacoma. Ordered a slice of olive and mushrooms New York style and a Sicily. Both were quite tasty. The Sicily was flavorful and the crust was crunchy and soaked with olive oil. Plenty of street parking spaces. read more

We were visiting Olympia and a local friend suggested that this might be among the very best pizza on the entire planet. i took that with a grain of salt, but we decided to try it anyway. I'm not sure how to convey just how tasty this pizza was. The dough was perfectly tasty - salty and crispy! The sauce was tangy and rich. The toppings fresh and tasty. The salad we had was amazing - full of fresh lively vegetables, and the two dressings we tried were both excellent! The air smelled of jasmine and honeysuckle... Seriously though... This was some of the best pizza i have ever had. I felt like a child again - eating something that would forever change my life. My only regret was that i couldn't force more of this into my body... Also, while I am effusing - I have to give a shout out to the staff there too! They were all perfectly fun and engaging - true pizza aficionados - and just generally awesome people! Excellent pizza!! Great crust! Good flavor. Cool vibes and interior. I was beginning to think I wasn't gonna find good pizza in OLY after moving here. This place has restored my faith. As a native New Yorker now living in Olympia, this is by far, the best pizza in town. And, I will go so far as to say it's tied for the best pizza west of the Mississippi (the other being Bronx pizza in San Diego). I always try a standard plain slice to test out the goods. Old School is a really cool pizza place with big comfy booths and tons of nostalgia. You can get pizza whole or by the slice here depending on your hunger level. I got a "one ton" pizza, and my partner got the pomodoro, which is one of their vegetarian pies. We both really enjoyed our pizza -- it's really good standard thinner crust pizza. Not Neapolitan, or NY style, or any of the other specific regional styles. They do technically have a vegan pizza, but it doesn't have a cheese substitute -- there's just no cheese. The menu lists cashews, but don't get confused -- it's not cashew cheese, it is actual whole cashews on top of the pizza. If you're in a rush, definitely get a slice rather than a whole pie, which can take a while, since they have to actually bake the pie. I'd say it's nice to go in a group, but keep in mind that they play the music pretty loud in there, so you're not going to hear someone sitting at the other end of the table. I tried the pepperoni and the Don Ho slices. Both were good. The slices are large. Maybe took 5 minutes to get my order. The walls are covered in old posters which adds to the decor. The staff was friendly and explained the menu upon entering and questioning about their options. Drinks are not Pepsi or Coke products and they have lots of beer choice in fridges. Got a slice of pepperoni pizza and a diet cola. A bit cramped, and it took a little while for them to make it, but at least they had some arcade cabinets and pinball while you wait. Best pepperoni slice I've ever had. I gotta admit when I got here I got surprised and a little bit shocked, the place has a lot of character: very loud but cool music (mostly rock from 80's, 90's) graffiti everywhere with posters on the walls. Yikes!!! The servers are the NICEST persons I have ever met. You order at the counter and then they'll call your name. You can stay and enjoy your meal there or take out. We ordered: cheese pizza, Hawaiian pizza and mushrooms pizza. They're thin and fresh, SO SO yummy!!! Large pizza (18') is huge but enough for 4 ppl. I called in my order and got an 18" Old School Pizza. Took 45 minutes, so I drove down and enjoyed a beer in house. After living in New York, it's hard to find good pizza on the west coast. This place makes solid pizza and I consider it the closest thing you will find in the area to your typical NYC slice. There's only a few flavor options if you're ordering by the slice, but they rotate all the time and the price isn't too bad. This is my favorite pizza in Olympia! You order from the counter, and take your seat and are handed a number. They have great beers on draft, but also a nice selection of cans to choose from, which are unique and awesome. The pizza is pretty fast in preparation and you can order by the slice. I love to try their daily specials even though I am a classic Pepperoni girl. Getting a few by the slice means you get to try all the flavors :) The ambiance is like a funky nod to an arcade with the walls filled of musical icons to enjoy. They do have their own restrooms, and parking has never been an issue at all. The sun does shine directly on the storefront so the inside can get warm in the summer, but the cold drinks definitely help. I moved to Oly less than a year ago and just about every friend I've made eats here at least semi-regularly. All the cool people eat here too, there's always punks in there and it's great. Right in the heart of downtown, so there's always people hanging out just down the street. The food is reasonably priced and good. I usually get a calzone and it's only about $10 despite being enough for two people. Free water and bathroom use of course, as it should be. Speaking of the bathroom, it's covered in graffiti which is super fun to read and look at. There's a couple arcade games in the back but I've never played them, the building is easy to find and recognise due to the superhero wall, and the employees are all super nice people. read more
