In Orange, Texas, to visit family today. stopped by the Old Orange Café for lunch. Two members of the group had salads with grilled shrimp on top. The salads were super fresh, the shrimp was seasoned and grilled to perfection, and the salad dressings were out of sight. I highly recommend the white balsamic vinegar dressing! Another member has the Fiesta Burger, spicy heat for the "not faint of heart"... looked great and was reported as delicious! The real star of the lunch was my meal, the fish special of the day. The dish consisted of a very generous portion of redfish, which was blackened in a skillet, and served on a bed of perfectly cooked, wild rice, and topped with a spinach, crab and mushroom garlic cream sauce. OMG! Gastric Heaven! The fresh green beans on the side were sautéed with chunks of bacon and onions, and were a perfect pairing for the fish. Nice little dinner. Stopped in for lunch on a rainy day that caused flooding all over town. The place was clean and friendly. Had old pictures of the town which I think most dinners should do. Lol Ordered what I consider a dinner go to a BLT and chips. They put a good amount of bacon on it and the tomatoes and lettuce was fresh with nicely toasted Texas toast. Wow, I had no idea what to expect and I can say I was very pleasantly surprised. I thought we were pulling up to an old warehouse and turns out it was OOCC! There was quite the lunch time crowd but we were seated rather quickly. I ordered the catch of the day with asparagus as my side. The red fish came on a bed of rice (which I would typically not touch) but after trying it, I found out it wasn't just any ordinary uncle bens! Best place for upscale food in Orange. Everything is fresh and delicious and the pies are to die for. They usually have a daily special and a daily quiche. The quiche is always yummy! Service is great and the restaurant is housed in an old dairy with historic pictures everywhere. If you're a history buff you'll love it. Highly recommended! read more

Certainly not what it used to be. While the new owner (2005) is a trained chef (?) the food is just meh! The grilled patty melt cheese (scant amount) had very little flavor and the grilled bread made the bread smell like dirty socks. I suppose the result of poor quality ingredients because even a fry/grill cook can't mess up a patty melt, or can they. So very disappointed. Memories of this "old cafe" from many years ago were much better than this experience. Or maybe that's just how I'd like to remember the "old cafe." read more

We wanted to find a place with PoBoys before heading back to Cibolo, Texas and came across this Cafe on the way home. It sits in a quaint little town with beautiful structured old buildings. Very good food and service, only wish they served adult beverages. We went there for brunch and everyone in our party enjoy their meals.

Just picked up lunch here. Been eager to try for a long time and was finally in Orange at a time they're open. I had their crab cake entree that's served on a bed of rice pilaf. For my side, I got the green beans. The crab cake was pricier ($18) than most of their other menu selections, but I love crab and I love a good crab cake. And theirs was good. The sauce was a thick and lemon flavored and tasted great. (Usually I order sauces on the side so I can actually taste the crab cake, but I forgot today.) The green beans we're also good and very flavorful. The waiting area was of particular interest to me as the pink tile is the same as my grandmother and grandfather had in their house. So, that was an unexpected - and pleasant - stroll down memory lane. I'm glad I came in and will try to make it to Orange again during their operating hours so I can sample other items. Old Orange Cafe is targeting culinary goals that are far above the capability of the kitchen. Unhappily, denizens of Orange, TX are the least likely to notice these atrocious failures. This experience was Ditto my last visit: Ho hum. Grilled shrimp? Really, if the chef cannot put Jumbo shrimp in a dish called "grilled shrimp," then why bother? Stick to a Burger 'n Fries menu, and fry up medium over-battered shrimp indistinguishable from those found in the frozen food isle of any supermarket! While you're at it, also hold the greasy green bean side, and whatever other gross stuff came with the shrimp: Rice with large slimy strings of sautéed onion and maybe mushrooms? Disgusting. Until native David Claybar set his sights on raising the bar, Orange was a town that suffered from an over-abundance of fast food joints and mediocre fare. No more! You will find some standard fare on the menu, but Chef David's attention to detail insures that even those are fresh and include quality ingredients. There's no mystery why OOC has such a loyal following. When push comes to shove though, the specials are where it's at! I'm excited to see Chef David getting bolder with them, which tells me that his clientele is welcoming his creativity with open arms. He's putting his proximity to fresh seafood to good use with ever-present seafood specials, which makes me endlessly jealous of those that live there. I'm a sucker for history, so I love that their buiding is historic to the town -- it was an old dairy originally, thus the extensive tiling in the dining room. The decor amps up this fact -- the walls are lined with huge photos capturing Orange, Texas' history. The service is friendly and on-the-ball. Oh, and don't forget dessert -- Buttermilk, Chocolate Chess, Pecan, Coconut Chess ... you have your pick of some incredible pies, as well as Bread Pudding. If you find yourself in the southeast Texas area, or driving on I-10 on your way to Louisiana around lunchtime, do yourself a favor ... AVOID the "gimme" places on the highway ... find your way to downtown Orange and treat yourself to Old Orange Cafe. read more

My first impression of this restaurant is it looks old. The floors are in need of replacement. They look dirty and outdated. I guess it goes with the theme of the restaurant (old dairy mill) but they should at least restore them or something. I ordered the lump crab cakes for $16.95 & it came with a salad. The salad tasted fresh and the raspberry vinaigrette gave it just the right flavor. My crab cake was delicious. It had a great flavor and it was cooked perfectly. There was nothing special about the rice or veggies on my plate. They tasted average. Even though I liked my crab cake, I feel my plate was overpriced. read more
