We've been coming to Kennedy Meadows for our annual family trip for years, and it's always one of…read morethe highlights of our summer. This year we stayed in cabins 17 and 20, which worked out perfectly for our two families. During our stay we went hiking, horseback riding, and enjoyed several meals at the restaurant. The horseback ride up to Kennedy Meadows Lake is a must-do, and the restaurant serves some really great food. The weather was absolutely perfect, and there's just something special about unplugging and enjoying the beautiful scenery. The only downside is the reservation process. You have to book about a year in advance, and it can take a lot of phone calls before you get through. It would be nice if there were a waitlist or a more streamlined reservation system for returning guests. That said, we appreciate the old-school charm and usually just take whatever dates or cabins we can get when the opportunity comes up. Despite the reservation challenge, we keep coming back year after year because it's such a wonderful place to make family memories. Highly recommend the horseback rides, the hike to Kennedy Meadows Lake, and dining at the restaurant!

Despite that, the fans inside the chapel did an ok job keeping people cool. Since I'm only about two, two and a half hours away from Sonora, I chose to go home after the wedding and reception, so I can't speak to the accommodations here. Keep in mind that if you're coming here for a wedding, the closest food options in Downtown Sonora are 15-20 minutes away by car, and these roads are winding and hilly, so keep that in mind.

She proceeded to slowly explain to me how to see the prices, despite me telling her several times the website was not displaying the prices on my end. After her cold tone and reluctance to talk (despite the website encouraging to call) I hung up. She then proceeded to call me back from a different number, with an even more cruel tone. The beds were comfy and the kitchens were well appointed with everything you need. The event site is just beautiful with a fantastic built-in bar, tons of gorgeous trees, a great dance floor, and more. It provided the perfect place for us to have the ceremony and reception. I know the pictures are going to be fantastic. The icing on the cake is the staff. They were incredibly helpful and accommodating. They went above and beyond, and it made a huge difference in the entire wedding weekend. Robert was wonderful. He was so accommodating and helpful. That goes a long way as the mother of the bride trying to pull this whole event together. He supported me every step of the way. Thank you Robert! Juan was really great. He seemed to be just where we needed him whenever we needed him. He helped us with so many things that we were not expecting to be helped with and he did it all happily and willingly. One has a ball pit, spinning chair, and swing. Another room had a bunch of cool lights. There are lots of safe spots to climb, a slide, a neat little area that looks like you're inside of a tree house, and a room in the back that has tons of pretend play toys. It's not a huge spot and a little challenging to find (it's in the parking lot near the post office on mono behind the new Pinocchio's location) but Jamie really made the most of the space. Mt. Brow is a small family owned winery near Sonora and Columbia State Park. My first experience…read morewith their wine was recently with a 2005 Merlot that a friend gave me. It was beautiful and I was sad when we finished the bottle. I went to the source and got another bbottle of the Merlot and a White Sangiovese. The Merlot is waiting, but the San Giovese was enjoyed during a trip to the coast. I will buy more. The winery is open for tastings on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. If you have company from out of town, call them and you might be able to arrange a private tasting. The owner, Jim Costello is great to talk to and you can tell he really loves what he is doing. What a great find so close to home.

There was also coffee in the room and a full coffee/tea bar in the dining area. The facility had a library den full of interesting titles, puzzles, and games. We LOVED the breakfasts. The menu included many choices: french toast, waffle, omelet, potatoes, veggies, eggs to order, bacon, toast, english muffin and fruit. The portions were extremely generous! The staff were all great including owner Michael who was very attentive to questions we had. We've also stayed at another of his properties (The Victoria Inn) which was also lovely. We definitely plan to be back and I can hardly wait! While we were in the area we ate at Jesus' Restaurant (Mexican across the street), Firewood (delicious pizza), and coffee at Aria. We also enjoyed hard cider at Indigeny Reserve! I definitely recommend staying at the Dunbar!

Before that it was known as the Five Mile Job Corp, and now we know it as Sierra Outdoor School. (Please read the SOS history here: https://sos.cusd.com/History.aspx ) I am happy to report that every time I have been here, (once in as a student back in 1992,) and twice as a chaperone (2016 and 2022), that they continue to uphold excellence science and ecological education. I don't speak for all children, who I have found will roll their eyes to the idea of conserving our world, to students who find traversing hills to learn more about nature as an arduously unnecessary task, that this school is truly a great experience. The Naturalists who teach here are patient, kind, knowledgeable, and inclusive of the every one of the children's differences. They are a forward thinking lot who continuously reflect on our past successes to better contribute to our future. From the life lessons we can learn from Teddy Roosevelt to the deeply rooted connections to nature by the Iroquois and Apache. Our students covered the 2 night camping trip both times and had a slightly different itinerary. (But I've come to learn that some schools are offered 5-day camping experiences to get the entirety of what SOS has to offer.) Classes experienced were as follows: High Ropes: Climb 32 ft while triple suspended and belayed to one of two courses, the Burma Bridge (crossing a wire bridge w/wire hand holds), and the Catwalk (a telephone pole laid horizontally), and cross towards the main zip line podium. The kids were able to experience this at their own preferred levels. A fee kids remained in their comfort zone by zip lining with no hesitation while others would get a strapped in, climb a peg or two, and head back to solid ground. Badger was the main Naturalist for the High Ropes adventure and he was here doing great things with the kids over 6 years ago! Silent Mile: during the first mile and half, we experienced various stopping and learning points in regards to ecology, biotic and abiotic, biome, classifying animals by what they eat, etc. Later on we were able to experience the Silent Mile where each child was separated, 20 seconds at a time, walking and taking in their experiences and the cards placed by the Naturalist, Sequoia, to reflect upon. Chaperones and teachers were inserted every 3-4 students to ensure safety. We followed that up with an experience called Heart Attack Hill. You can traverse it however you would like, but the one we went on was a longer but easier version of the steeper/shorter one that I remembered running 6 years ago. Lastly, the kids were given magnifying glasses and instructions to examine the world around them. Wilderness Survival: We had Foster (Slime Mold) guide us through understanding how better to be prepared in our environment. From a fun compass usage exercise, to building our own shelter in the elements. Night Hike: Shirley (Tiger Lily) was our naturalist for this learning experience. We were able to enjoy a beautifully lit sky once camp had turned off the light pollution. She also taught us about our eyes, red light use, and how important they are to each and every living creature. Roaring Relays: Wide varying challenges across a gym room floor. Campardy: Large groups of kids take turns competing against each other to answer questions about what they've learned so far. Previously we had done Owl Pellet Dissection, arrowhead carving, and Dull Axe Excavation of tree bark and within soil. Some things had changed, but the interactive fun doesn't stop.

We wake up, eat, and off we go on a hike. Next is lunch, next hike. After that dinner, then night class till 9:00 at night. Up at 6:30am. Why I gave it 4 stars, the food for the most part was good, but you could tell a lot of the food came from a can or was frozen. Which I guess is fine when your feeding hundreds of kids. The salad bar for the adults was awesome!! Thank you! Also, the beds were not very comfortable, but it could have been way worse. The showers are super small and there is only 3 showers per side of the cabin. Plus the walls in the cabin are super thin so you can hear everyone get up to use the bathroom. Other than that this is something your child should experience. Totally worth it!!
