My dogs have been happy clients of Old Mill Boarding Kennel & Grooming since 2007. In fact, we have had the same groomer, the fabulous Raini, for all 18 years now! She previously cared for my two Yorkies who made it to age 16, and now styles my current pup, Ares, a very handsome 4-year-old Miniature Schnauzer who is quite the character. Raini is incredibly talented with her grooming skill, and also has a patient, warm, friendly and caring disposition that sets all the pups at ease. As soon as we get in the car on grooming day, Ares is just so excited to see her, and he happily runs in the door to say hello to all his friends there. The entire Old Mill team is beyond exceptional, and they feel like family. I've used this facility many times and my dogs are always eager to walk in and come home smelling fresh! The staff have been accommodating and always helpful when I call with questions. Even though it's a larger kennel they are organized and efficient. The dogs get to be in actual grass to play too. I have a picky dog who tends to go on hunger strike when I'm gone and they went above and beyond to sit with her and bring her food to coax her to eat. Best thing is that their prices are so much lower than closer to the city, so their prices and care they take of my pups make it totally worth it. This review is for my recent experience with grooming here. Samantha is AAAAAAMAZING! I have a 6month old Persian kitten who refuses to groom himself, and runs anytime I grab a comb at home. That being said I knew grooming him wasn't going to be easy, but desperately needed to be done. Samantha transformed him with a bath and blow out into the fluffiest, softest, tangle free kitten I have ever seen. I never got called at work or side eyed because he definitely had some mats, the entire thing was handled so professionally and Kindly. All of the staff seemed really nice and helpful too. I also expected my kitten to be traumatized and hide under the bed for the next three days, but he came home relaxed and happy to be looking so good! I have used Old Mill several times and am generally satisfied with the service. However, I have a complaint about their charging policy. A new day of charges ($37 for my dog) starts at 12pm each day. This can result in an extra day of charges, even if you pick up your pet at an earlier time than you dropped him off. For example, I dropped off my dog on Thursday at 5pm and picked him up on Monday 1pm. I was charged for five days, even though my dog spent less than four full days at the facility. This has now happened to me three times. I have paid for three days of service that I never used. Management is up front and honest about this policy, but, in my view, it is unfair to charge for services that are not rendered. read more

We had never left our super-spoiled pom in a kennel and of course I was very apprehensive (like a new parent) that any kennel could keep our dog happy for the several days that we needed to be out of town. A neighbor recommended Old Mill as they had left their dog there several times and were very happy... in fact, they promised me that their dog actually didn't want to come HOME when they went to pick her up! I was immediately at ease when I stopped by unexpected to visit; the staff are obviously animal lovers (sounds obvious, maybe, but a dog can sniff out a fake!) and enjoy their work. Knowing that our pup is high-strung, (not aggressive, just a bit of a brat) we asked if they would be willing to try him in a group play setting, knowing that he might flunk out. They were very reassuring and let us know that if it didn't work out they would adjust his daily routine to something better suited for him. Surprise of surprises, he did great with the other dogs... Our hard-to-please dog was all wags and we received a sweet daily report complete with pictures detailing his daily activities when we picked him up. IMHO, it's not that "hard" to feed, water, and walk a dog, but the ability to cater to them personally, especially the spoiled ones like ours, is a gift that this kennel staff showed us. I appreciated their patience with my "newbie dog mom" anxiety, and their encouragement of our prima donna pup. For us, the proof is in the wag. We board our dog here about once a year, sometimes twice, when we're gone for a weekend or a vacation for 7-10 days. Our dog loves going to the kennel! Except for her very first visit (when she was scared to death), she's always running in, and running to a favorite staff member. One time they had a concern about something, and they called me to see if that was "normal" for our dog (it was). I knew they really paid attention and that made me feel good. Admittedly, she has occaisionally gotten kennel cough - that's normal and temporary and requires no treatment. It's super convenient that they are attached to the vet. We usually have her annual checkup done while she's there, and if we have anything that is a concern, it's all taken care of while she's there. I'll be honest, I have never even seen the vet, but they call me and leave notes after they've looked her over and I am always pleased with the practical advice we're given ~ they are not making things up so we'll spend unnecessary money. Timmy, the manager, LIVES at the kennel. Once there was a hurricane that came through and there were threats of tornados and flooding in the area, knowing he lived there, I knew he'd do anything and everything he could to protect our pets, so it gave me a sense of relief. I could not be any more pleased with the service and care that Old Mill Kennels has provided my family. Both of our girls are older and must be kenneled together. Our German Shepard has a history of anxiety. During her last stay there, due to the staffs amazing attention to detail and constant attention to the animals they noticed her hyperventilating which can cause a Shepard stomach to twist. The staff didn't hesitate to take her to a vet, get her comfortable, call me and put me in contact with the medical staff. All of those things took place at once! I called to get more information NOT put down a deposit! The guy that answered went through a whole spiel of stuff and then asked me for my credit card info. I nicely told him I wasn't planning on putting a deposit down, I just wanted to know if there was availability to begin with as I was calling around. If so I wanted to come take a tour. I'm not going to just easily let strangers watch my two sweet dogs that easy. So when I said I wasn't planning on putting down a deposit right now, he "So I just went over all that for nothing?" You can sense he was very annoyed with me. At the end of the conversation he said have a nice day and quickly hung up. We couldn't have been more pleased with the care given to our 5 month old puppy Hershey last weekend! Everyone was so friendly and helpful when I toured the kennel beforehand and during drop off and his stay. David C was so sweet to send text updates throughout the weekend as he knew I was nervous boarding Hershey for the first time. Hershey ate and slept fine and remained on his schedule when he got home. When I took him back two days later for a grooming appointment he was wagging his tail and running into the building. He happily walked back to the back area for his appt. The groomer spent time talking to me about what she recommended for his first grooming appt and took time to learn about his likes/dislikes. I have boarded my dog here a few times and I thought every thing was OK. The manager has always been pretty nice and attentive. However the last time I boarded my pet there he was attacked. When trying to speak to the owner about it the situation, he came up with excuses as to why he is not responsible for what happened. I consider this a serious situation. It's written and stated that they have an on site person there 24/7. That's false. They don't have anyone there on site all night. My issue is with the owner not trying to rectify the situation. He took no responsibility whatsoever for the situation. I was under a false impression that they were responsible for my pet's well being. Instead I ended up with an injured dog and a huge vet bill. Our dog died of low glucose induced seizures on 2/19/2011. On 1/14/2011 we had bloodwork done at Old Mill. The results of the bloodwork indicate that he had low glucose. The vet instead of telling me about that writes on the chart "suspect glucose inaccurate." I didn't see the chart until I had to transfer him to an emergency hospital. By then it was too late. Do yourself a favor and go anywhere else. They had the info in hand and chose to ignore it. For that my dog died. read more

We have been using Old Mill Kennels for over 15 years now and never have we had a problem. The staff may at times be busy and rushed...but they are still always polite and have taken good care of our dogs. We have always had two dogs, and we've boarded them together. One time we got a call that they got into a fight, so they were put into separate runs, and then the kennel called to see if we agreed with that or wanted our dogs back together. I appreciated the kennel's prompt action, rather than just waiting it out to see if it would happen again. In general, our dogs are happier being at home with a petsitter....so we do try to use that option whenever possible. But in the end, if we have to board, our dogs always go to Old Mill. Yes, they may come home a bit tired or crazy....but I realize any kennel isn't their typical or preferred environment and I don't hold that against the kennel. What I do see is that every time we walk in the front door, our dogs try to walk right into the back...which tells me they're OK being here and that's what matters. read more

We continue to use Old Mill as our "go to" boarding kennel due to the quality of care and attentiveness of the staff. Our sometimes aggressive dog has become comfortable enough with the staff that we no longer need to walk him back to the kennel and, more than that, he seems happy and comfortable to go here without any anxiety or reluctance. They were not able to accommodate us for a last minute emergency last Thanksgiving (our child was being delivered two weeks before his due date), which I completely understand, though as long time clients it would have been nice if they had helped us find another kennel or even offer recommendations. But it was last minute and over a hugely busy holiday, so I understand the staff might have been overwhelmed. Regardless, we continue to use Old Mill and are very happy here. The in house Vet is clutch actually saved my cat's life a while back when they noticed a tumor under his coat while on vacation. Took him to the vet and he was good as new by the time we got back. We adopted a crazy little Shih Tzu from the local pound. The puppy had obviously been through traumatic times. Lives day to day thinking the sky is falling. The staff at Oldmill has been just wonderful and accommodating to me and my crazy little pup. Dr. Hussion is so patient, the only man in town who can vaccinate clip nails and pluck ears without sedation. Hard to believe we have been customers @ Old Mill for 7 years already. Timmy and the kennel side are fantastic as well. Samantha is a great groomer. She couldn't handle our crazy pup but she sure did try. Just picked up our Tuck after a nine day stay @ the kennel side. I do not recommend Old Mill Kennels for anyone who loves their animals. I have taken my dog to Old Mill Kennels at least five times for stays ranging from one to five days. Every time we picked him up from there, even after one or two days, he was a nervous wreck! During one stay, we received a call that he was so upset that his feet were bleeding because he was trying so hard to get out of his crate, which is absolutely not consistent with his personality. The kennel asked if their vet could give him a sedative! Being out of state and unable to return for several more days, I felt I had no choice so I said yes to the sedative. That was the last time he stayed there! Also, every time he came home from Old Mill Kennels he had a horrible cough that lingered for days, even the time he was there for one day! read more

We have been going to Old Mill since 1998 and have always seen our dogs treated with the upmost care. When one of our dogs was so stressed without us that she wouldn't eat, individual staff members sat with her for hours hand feeding her whatever she was interested in. I recently had my cat in Old Mill's cat boarding for 3 weeks. It was our first visit and we found the overall experience to be top shelf for both our cat and for us. The staff was friendly and professional and gave us a complete tour of the facility on an earlier "scouting" visit. On the day of drop off the input staffer questioned us closely about our cat's physical needs and behavior characteristics. On our return the cat was in excellent condition both physically and mentally. The staff took note of our cat's extreme shyness and put her in an area where she had maximum privacy. At check out an incident of special note occured. We had signed our cat up for an hour of "play time" each day at extra cost but the note on our bill said that our cat only hid under a table and would not come out. After several days "play time" was terminated. The extra charge for the service was deleted from our bill. The point here is that there is absolutely no way I could have known if the cat had play time or not. Old Mill is apparently an honest operation and did the right thing. Old Mill Grooming is a great place to take your dog or cat. I also have a dog with a trachea problem and when she goes to get groomed, she coughs and has a difficult time with breathing. I've been taking all my dogs here for years. My girlfriend had to kennel her dogs for the first time this week and she was so scared. We went to other places closer to home that were just disgusting. I then told her about Old Mill. We came by so she could see the place and tour the kennel. Let me tell you the kennel was so clean and actually quiet. None of the dogs were barking and they all seemed rather happy! Now it is still a kennel so they have concrete floors, but it was all so clean. They clean inside and outside multiple times a day as well as clean the food bowls after every meal. You can bring all your own toys and beds. When on vacation my girlfriend called multiple times a day and they would go check on the puppies and give us an update on how they were doing. If they were scared or didn't look well they would spend personal time with the dogs to make sure they were okay. The staff was so wonderful and took the time to get to know the dogs! I could go on for hours. In the end, this is probably the best place for your dog for a cheap price. I wouldn't take my dogs anywhere else. Good job Old Mill, thank you! read more

I've been using these guys for the past few years and never had a problem... until today. When we made our reservation I was told that I could pick up my dog on the 31st of December or the 2nd of January but not on the 1st. That was fine, I asked what time I could pick on the 31st and I was told until 7:00. So I picked a flight back that would get me back in time to get my dog. When they called to confirm the reservation I verified that I could pick up until 7:00 and was told yes, I asked what would happen if my flight was delayed I was told that they would extend my reservation until the 2nd but I could still pick up on the 31st until 7:00. When I dropped my dog off I was told 7:00 again. I went today (the 31st) and arrived at 5:20 PM. Walked in and told the guy behind the counter that I was there to pick up my dog. He said ohh we closed at noon you'll have to come and get her on the 2nd. I told him that wasn't what I was told, he didn't care said he wouldn't do it. I offered to pay an after hours fee, he wouldn't do it. Would not let me have my dog. So now my dog is being held hostage an additional day and a half until I can get her on the morning on the second. So I'm home, my dog is at the kennel (which really stinks) and to add insult to injury I'm going to get charged another 2 days. I will never ever use this kennel again. Once i have my dog, I'll be having words with the manager. Update: The manager called me about 5 minutes after I posted this review (maybe he got alerted I don't know). I spoke my grievances and he agreed to let me come get my dog, so for that I'm bumping up my rating from 1 star to 2 stars. I'd just remove this review and call the whole thing good, but after he told me I could get my dog he then said, "I don't want to get into it because it's the holiday but nobody here would of told you 7:00", which to me sounded like he was calling me a liar, which was not cool. All I wanted from the get go was to have somebody say, "sorry we screwed up, the person you talked to when you made the reservation / confirmation / drop off should of said, oh by the way it's not normal business hours that day." Nobody has yet said sorry, in fact all they've done so far is call me a liar, so the review is staying. I don't know if I'll use them again or not. The owner is supposed to call me next week. Maybe he'll be smart enough to just say "Sorry something happened on our end, we'd like to keep your business" as opposed to "you are a liar" which is what I got from the manager. If that's what happens when I talk to the owner not only will I take my business else where I'll convince the few friends I have that use them to take their business else where. read more

They have often helped me out on short notice numerous times and have fit me in when I called at the last minute.
