I had breakfast with two High School friends Saturday. I couldn't get over how old & infirm they looked. Thankfully, I haven't aged one bit! This was my first visit to the Old Dixie Cafe in Hobe Sound, FL as it is situated roughly halfway between the three of us. The Cafe was quite a surprise. It was very clean, the staff was very efficient and friendly and the menu had a wide variety of items at very reasonable prices. Our Waitress took our orders and immediately returned with our drinks. When she returned appropriately 6-minutes later we all remarked at the size of the portions and how good everything looked. And it was. During the meal the waitress returned to check on us and refill our drinks. It was a pleasure eating at the Old Dixie Cafe and we agreed to return there often. I only hope my friends remember where it's located & that we've eaten there before. read more

Stop in for breakfast and wasn't thrilled. It was not busy! I order the Taylor ham and cheese sandwich $9.95 without the egg and a side of home fries $1.75. Husband got French toast and bacon . Never been to this establishment so decided to head south and give it a try considering I just got into town and wanted a bloody mary (wish they added to menu) but started off with a mimosa instead. Nothing fancy, pretty basic with a sizable menu, friendly staff, many locals. Prices are modest, and so was my breakfast choice. Two poached eggs, sausage links, rye bread, and grits. Grits were spot on, rye bread was super fresh and warm as if it just came from bakery, and probably the best poached eggs I have ever had by any breakfast joint to date. Visited Old Dixie Cafe in Hobe Sound, FL, for brunch with my grandfather, and it was a lovely experience. This small café has a cozy atmosphere where everyone knows everybody. The service was good, and I enjoyed the everything omelet with corned beef hash and home potatoes. It wasn't busy, which made for a relaxed and enjoyable meal. I found this place one day while I was working in the area. I had a great breakfast and decided to try the place. Staff was so pleasant seated me right away. Large menu and selection of foods. Breakfast Lunch and Dinners. I ordered the 2-2-2 . Two pancakes two eggs hashbrowns everything was cooked to perfection. Coffee was nice and hot. They came around multiple times to top off my coffee. 2nd visit for breakfast! This time I ordered one of my favorites and was disappointed. 1/2 order of sausage gravy and biscuit and 2 eggs over medium. I only wanted to order 1 egg but they only offer two eggs, no price for just one egg. The biscuit was overdone, looks like it was put on the grill way to long, not fluffy biscuit. Not much gravy but it tasted good. I'll try it again for breakfast but order something else. When we have company there is always at least one or two meals that we go there for. I just had a gourmet meal at.....yes, wait for it....Old Dixie Cafe North! After the new management took over, this iconic local hangout changed. The decor is more subtle, TV screens of different channels have replaced the eclectic collections of posters. The honky tonk music is there. The wait staff that looks like real southern cafe wait staff is there. No sexy outfits or excess makeup and nonsense. Just hard working wait staff concerned about your food service. No kids that know nothing but adults that do this for a living. The booths and tables may be a bit freshened up but mostly the same basic furnishings. They serve beer and wine now. No wine list just types and the beer is a good selection, not a dozen or more. I've only eaten lunch here until tonight. I have to say that it has become a staple choice when I need a generously packed tuna wrap of fresh ingredients and some crispy French fries. No dinner menu try out until tonight. I'm an accomplished chef. If I order something special, it better be right. I boldly ordered the Veal Piccata. Go big or go home. I choose the salad and bread instead of the soup. Fried calamari was the choice of appetizer. A garlic 'sauce' was brought with what appeared to be a fresh, soft non commercial bread roll. Wow. It was more of a garlic oil pesto that screamed garlic and if the garlic had been roasted, would have avoided the 'bite' of raw garlic. That would have made it palatable to a larger audience but I love raw garlic so it was perfect. The salad was fresh and simple in an angled bowl perfect for salads. The silverware and plating is basic. Cafe style. Trust me the food doesn't need upgraded dinnerware. The homemade balsamic dressing was just what it needed to be. Not tart, not sweet, just right. I indelicately tipped the bowl up to my mouth to finish the dregs it was so perfect. The sauce for the delicately cooked calamari was also perfect. Little slices of garlic in a meaty red sauce without too much or too little. When my main dish arrived, there was no fuss or pretense, just a generous serving. I have sent back veal at expensive restaurants because it just wasn't prepared correctly. Three slender filets perfectly pounded lay on top of my choice of Angel Hair pasta. A generous but not excessive amount of sauce and capers covered everything. I took my knife (not needed) and fork and sliced into what proved to be a very tender, perfectly cooked veal filet. My first mouthful presented a light, lemony bite of tender veal. I was very surprised. Not because it's a cafe. I was surprised because even high end restaurants can ruin this simple recipe. I was surprised because the veal wasn't the finest cut, there was a small piece of grizzle in one, but because of the preparation, it rivaled a finer cut. The pasta was cooked a drained perfectly before pairing on the plate. I had one suggestion for our manger/waitress. I asked her to please arrange, for people like me, to offer a corkage fee for the diner to bring their own wine. If you were going to appreciate that pasta, you may want your own vintage. Best of all I can relax in a casual atmosphere, free of pretense and unnecessary high costs. My meal was $20.99. I have found my new go to dinner location. Please don't try it, I hate crowds! read more

From the moment we walked in, we felt welcomed. This is a family-owned restaurant, and even the son, who is currently in college, still works here. He was actually our waiter, and I was incredibly impressed that he memorized all five of our orders, including drinks and special requests. Everything came out perfectly, which is no small feat for a larger group. The owner is absolutely wonderful. Dining here doesn't feel like you're sitting in a restaurant--it feels like you're a guest in someone's home. We ordered a bottle of wine, and she personally came to our table to share the history of the wine and where it originated before opening the bottle for us. It was such a warm and personal touch that made the experience feel special. Three of us ordered the lamb Bolognese, and it was easily a 10/10. The portions were so generous that all three of us took leftovers home. The flavors were rich, delicious, and comforting. I ordered the eggplant appetizer and shared it with one of the girls in exchange for some of her Bolognese. The eggplant was absolutely fantastic, and I would order it again without hesitation. The menu offered so many tempting options that it took us forever to decide what we wanted. Ironically, most of us ended up wanting the same thing, which gave us all a good laugh. On Thursdays, they offer a prime rib special for $20. One of my girlfriends, who follows a high-protein diet, ordered it and absolutely loved it. She said it practically melted in her mouth and happily took the remainder home. When you first walk in, there's a small, quaint bar that seats about six or seven people. The owner was behind the bar crafting cocktails, and she mentioned that Old Fashioneds and spritzes are her specialties. I originally planned to order a rosé, but after watching her make an Old Fashioned, I changed my mind. I'm glad I did--the drink was smooth, balanced, and thoroughly enjoyable. Overall, if you're looking for a place where you'll feel genuinely welcomed and treated like family, this is it. I would absolutely recommend making the drive, even if it's out of your way. I drove 40 minutes to get here, and it was completely worth it.

Clearly it was not the dish to try. However, that was not the experience I had with my most recent visit. The Ambiance The ambiance is a cross between your typical Italian restaurant with wallpaper scenes of Italy and a sports bar with photos of baseball players (predominantly my team, the Yankees) and a Tom Brady wall when he was with the Buccaneers. There's high-top tables and bar seating in the bar area and a large dining area in the dining area. The Service Efficiency with a smile would be the best way to describe the service. It seemed like everyone had a job and each person filled that job to perfection. Tables were cleaned as soon as they were messed, dishes were cleared as soon as they were done, drinks were refilled immediately all with a smile and the utmost of courtesy. As a restauranteur, I must say I have never seen such efficiency and professional courtesy all in one package. The Food If you like big dishes, one's that provide enough leftovers for a week, you'll love this place. If you like fantastic Italian food, this is the place for you, if you enjoy a great dessert, you'll find one right here. For our appetizer, we shared the Calamari. It had a crispy crust and a uniquely chewy, yet tender interior. My lovely bride chose the Chicken Piccata over a bed of Angel Hair Spaghetti. The chicken was oh so tender with just the right lemon in the sauce to add a bit of zest. I chose the eggplant parm with rigatoni and sweet Italian sausage. The eggplant, although a bit thicker than I like, was covered in a crispy layer of melted mozzarella cheese. The eggplant was tender and tastefully finished with a nicely seasoned breading. The entire dish was amply topped with a robust marinara sauce. The accompanying rigatoni was a bit too thin for me but was cooked Al Dente to perfection. For dessert, we chose the tiramisu and peanut butter pie. Both were excellent with the tiramisu featuring just the right blend of coffee and cream. The peanut butter pie was oh so creamy and finished with a sprinkling of chocolate. Both were a fitting way to end a great dining experience. The bottom line The bottom line as always with my reviews is my "customer so what" ... would I come back? I'm sure you know the answer based on my above review. Although pretty expensive for an Italian restaurant... $150.00 for a party of two, the size of the dishes is big enough to provide leftovers for another two dinners, I definitely would return and if you haven't been there, it's definitely worth the trip.

Dining here doesn't feel like you're sitting in a restaurant--it feels like you're a guest in someone's home. We ordered a bottle of wine, and she personally came to our table to share the history of the wine and where it originated before opening the bottle for us. It was such a warm and personal touch that made the experience feel special. Three of us ordered the lamb Bolognese, and it was easily a 10/10. The portions were so generous that all three of us took leftovers home. The flavors were rich, delicious, and comforting. I ordered the eggplant appetizer and shared it with one of the girls in exchange for some of her Bolognese. The eggplant was absolutely fantastic, and I would order it again without hesitation. The menu offered so many tempting options that it took us forever to decide what we wanted. Ironically, most of us ended up wanting the same thing, which gave us all a good laugh. On Thursdays, they offer a prime rib special for $20. One of my girlfriends, who follows a high-protein diet, ordered it and absolutely loved it. She said it practically melted in her mouth and happily took the remainder home. When you first walk in, there's a small, quaint bar that seats about six or seven people. The owner was behind the bar crafting cocktails, and she mentioned that Old Fashioneds and spritzes are her specialties. I originally planned to order a rosé, but after watching her make an Old Fashioned, I changed my mind. I'm glad I did--the drink was smooth, balanced, and thoroughly enjoyable. Overall, if you're looking for a place where you'll feel genuinely welcomed and treated like family, this is it. I would absolutely recommend making the drive, even if it's out of your way. I drove 40 minutes to get here, and it was completely worth it.
