This is deffinently a hidden and unspoken gem. Environment : I absolutely love the feel in here. It is a more laid-back, chill place. Very clean and has a good coffe house feel. Small tabke mostly seating small groups . There is a bar area in the middle that is a cool touch. What's nice is thay kids are welcomed still. Service: very fast service. I really like how nice they were. Smiley and personable. They seemed to like what they were doing. Product: it's a cool touch to serve both alcohol and coffee in one place. Who doesn't love a place that serves coffee AND beer? We came here for dinner and didn't tap into the beers this time, but will definitely be back to partake soon! I love that this place has a revolving, small menu. The menu changes weekly and it only has about 5 things to choose from. To me, this means fresh food and fine tuned recipes. We had some Mediterranean Chicken and it was absolutely delicious. (I'm sorry I don't remember the actual name, but since the menu changes weekly, I doubt you'd see the item to order anyway.) This place is definitely a hidden, hip treasure! UPDATE: We have returned a couple of times and been disappointed. The service/check out is slow as can be. There are three degrees of coffee in my life: 1. Traveling coffee that you get at a gas station 4 hours into an 8 hour trip that taste like burnt coffee grounds - but heck there are 174 different kinds of creamer to mask the flavor. 2. Decent coffee you grab on your way to work from places like Starbucks and Dunkin that you can drink without a gripe - unless they accidentally added skim milk to your quad shot skinny soy white peppermint mocha with extra whipped cream. 3. OMG coffee that makes your taste buds thankful you woke up today. That coffee is 9th degree of darkness. Sweet lord in heaven it's what all the other dark roast coffee wants to be when they grow up. Not only is it deep and dark but it has 0% acid. I love Old Crown because they are the real deal when it comes to coffee. They roast their own beans and know what they are doing. They sell both brewed and whole coffee beans they can grind for you. The coffee selections are varied and sometimes you can find some very unique beans. All of there coffee beans for purchase have a description that makes sense as well as a small chart showing the roast, acid, and some other thing I can't remember. Those give you a great idea of how the coffee flavor will be. Old Crown is worth a visit to experience how coffee was intended to be. read more

Reading the other reviews on Google, I just found out that this place doubles as a bar at night! Interesting! Dunno about their beer and wine, but here goes about their coffee! Two years ago, my sister and I were on a cross country trip through the Midwest. Our travels took us through many states and wherever we stopped, I'd google, "coffee shops near me" as I have a strong aversion to chain coffee shops. We've never wanted to live in Indiana before that first sip of our Old Crown espresso drinks! What amazing taste! The miles between our homes and this coffee shop almost seemed worth the prize at the end of the road to come back! Throughout the intervening two years, the name and location of this coffee shop were lost in the fog of memory. Having been to several coffee shops during the 10-day jaunt, we couldn't remember details but we'd reminisce every once in a while about the amazing coffee shop somewhere out east. We could picture the surrounding, confusing parking lots where none connected to the other, the wrought-iron around the front of the place and the small barrels of coffee beans immediately inside...could see the cool, artsy interior in our mind's eye. Fast forward two years and I'm once again on a cross country trip - with my children this time. We've been staying in Central Indiana for the last week and are heading to Michigan. Briefly the mental fog cleared and it seemed to me that the fabled coffee shop might reside in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Leaving Anderson, I put "coffee shop Ft Wayne IN" in my GPS and got about 9 hits. The minute I saw the name Old Crown, I knew I'd found it. I hoped I'd found it! I remember making an association with "old crown" and "old dominion," the nickname of Virginia! Now, why in the world I could remember those word associations vs. the name and location itself? Who knows. I'm old. My brain short circuits frequently! And so I found myself once again getting lost in the parking lots, turning into the wrong one (the same wrong one as two years ago), snaking my way back out and into the right lot (two years ago, we pulled into a second wrong parking lot). I spied the wrought iron enclosure and knew that I'd come home. As I walked into the interior and saw the small barrels still on display, I took a picture and texted it to my sister with a message that was a thinly veiled, "Nanner, nanner boo boo!" Time and memory have not overstated the amazing espresso drinks they serve. If my experience with Old Crown were a fishing story, my fish wouldn't have grown by leaps and bounds...in reality, I caught a whale! All I can tell you is...you'll never forget it. Old Crown was adorable. I was visiting Fort Wayne for work and we hit up many coffee shops while there (the fuel of the working class, no?). I really liked the eclectic interior and I would probably work here often if I lived in Fort Wayne. I did have a couple of hiccups while I was there, though--nothing horrible, but the service flow at the counter can get pretty slow (there's no streamlined process of where you put in your order and then follow through to pay) and they made my espresso con panna wrong and kind-of sort-of argued with me about what it was. They served me espresso with steamed whipping cream foam, which is *not* what it is, but the woman behind the counter was not receptive to me telling her that it was made incorrectly. She seemed like she might be new so I let it slide to lack of training; she wasn't rude, she just didn't seem to understand what I was trying to tell her. I decided not to drop the "I was a barista for three years so I know what that is, miss" line on her and just drink my espresso macchiato. She seemed a little stressed out and I didn't want to add to it. To be totally fair to their service, they did brew a whole new pot of iced tea for my friend and even let him pick the flavor. So they're not super rude or anything. Just a bit under-trained, maybe. Still, it's the kind of independent coffee shop where the hiccups don't really affect the overall experience, if that makes sense at all. It feels homey in a cool kind of way. I don't even mind that they're a coffee shop/bar/restaurant, and usually that isn't my thing at all. This may not sound like a ringing endorsement for Old Crown, but if you think about it, if I have a fondness for this coffee shop despite being served the wrong drink and having to wait for a long time, there must be something special here, no? I've had coffee all over the country, but Old Crown is my favorite place for a number of reasons. Number 1: The staff. Everyone is extremely knowledgeable about their products and are never too cool to stop and talk with you for a bit or discuss the product you're ordering, which includes everything from a cup of tea to a Brandy Alexander. To highlight the staff more, the head bartender is top-of-the-line. Order one of the special drinks at the bar and watch him. I guarantee you'll be impressed. Number 2: The products. The coffee at Old Crown comes form all over the world and roasted right there in the store. If you're there when they're roasting and love the smell of coffee, you'll be hooked. At least, that's what happened to my Dad. Their selection of alcohol rivals that of J.K. O'Donnell's, but allows their customers to buy and carry out the beer they offer. I won't forget about their food, either. Their soups are made daily which are always quite tasty and flavorful while their wraps are handmade at the time of ordering. Number 3: Location. If you're a college student at IPFW (like I was), this is your place to study or take a break from class. With free wi-fi, you're golden. Number 4: Quality. If you're looking for a local coffee shop to call your 3rd home that isn't commercial like Starbucks but with the same reliability, this is the place to go. I've never had a bad drink, engaged with poor customer service, or had a negative experience. I've been a regular for years and whenever I make a trip to Fort Wayne I always stop by to say hi and have a drink with one of my hometown friends. read more

It's been awhile since I've had a reuben sandwich that was truly bitey enough (most places tend to sell bland kraut, which is truly a sad thing) and had the texture of corned beef that got that "just right" feeling. My first reuben at Old Crown today (simple- no sides, just a delightfully toasted sandwich for $6.45) was AMAZING. I was totally happy with the consistency, balance of flavors and subtly crunchy rye bread. By the time I finished, I realized that there had been a subtle spiciness to the sauerkraut and meat that made the overall experience very warming. Big thumbs up! I've been going to Old Crown for the past couple years on and off, since it's located adjacent to the IPFW campus and provides a lovely environment for studying, writing papers or reading. The coffee has always been good- and since they roast their own beans for sale regularly, there is often a delightful smell hanging in the air. From the outside, the place is small and fairly nondescript- unless you know what you're looking for, as an unaware traveler passing by you would never know it was there. some reviews have cited this as a negative aspect, but I've always found it charming. The inside is laid out well and features warm burnt tones- earthy themed orange/yellow. There are plenty of small tables available for people to get work done, and although there are constantly conversations and music playing, it is one of the few coffee shops where it isn't overwhelming or distracting- I rarely put headphones in. This is a pretty big deal, since I can rarely do homework at Starbucks without getting annoyed by the music. My favorite recently has been the Bourbon infused chai- I strongly recommend trying it! the bartenders/baristas are always very helpful in suggesting things to try without being 1) annoyed by your uncertainty or 2) condescending. They offer straight up ideas that have invariably turned out to be high on my list of favorites. I'm not from around Ft. Wayne so my expectations might have been influencing my perception of this place, but from the reviews plus what a friend told me (that the coffee was comparable to Intelligentsia) I was super stoked to go here. It was really crowded which I take to mean the food is good. Seemed to have a decent bar with good beers. I purchased a pound of their Colombian whole bean coffee. The service was ok, not great. It was also about a hundred degrees out though, so I don't hold it against them. The coffee really didn't impress me, and at $16 something a pound, was a bit of a disappointment. I didn't care for the location either, but based on the crowd I'm assuming no one else minded. I guess I was envisioning something a little more downtown, and was taken aback by the strip mall across the street. Well, we are in Indiana. I would probably try it again but not until checking out a few other places first. read more

This place was my go-to in college since it's down the road from IPFW and I have spent countless hours studying or writing here. Twice a month, my writer's group meets here for drinks and discussion. Great coffee-- you can get a mug and have free refills. It's just polite to make some kind of purchase for each hour you plan to use wifi, but nothing like that is enforced. They have a small case of baked goods, a nice selection of wraps and delicious meals on Friday. The addition of a full bar is amazing. I've had cocktails here that I've only read or heard about-- and they're all fantastic. I recommend trying the Blueberry Truffle. Their microbrew and wine selection is also great. They even have a take-away license if you decide to buy a bottle of wine to go. The decor is unique, kind of industrial and decorated with local art. It's dark and intimate inside at night. The staff is friendly and they have a good mix of regulars and newcomers. read more

They have a nice variety of beans to choose from. Old Crown also has the Clover machine. If you don't know what that is, it's a very high-tech single-cup coffee brewer that makes the best cup of coffee ever. I enjoyed my 9th Degree of Darkness coffee that was made on the Clover. It would have gone perfectly with some sort of chocolatey dessert... mmmm.... next time I go back I will definitely get a cookie or some sort of baked goods to enjoy with my coffee :) read more

Just went to Old Crown for an amazing up of coffee I ordered a black and white mocha drink and I also had my Stepmom with me whatever she ordered she enjoyed too. I ordered a Ruben sandwich from the all day menu which was jam packed with meat it was one of the better sandwiches I've had in a while. I came in right before closing time on a Sunday afternoon with low expectations because so many coffee shops serve a "hours old medium roast" in the afternoon. With the first taste I was like, wow!, this is good coffee. I'm savoring the last few drops in my nearby hotel and sad they don't open at 5 am so I could get a cup in the morning before my meeting starts. When I moved to Fort Wayne about four years ago, one of the first places I visited was Old Crown. I have traveled quite a bit and was so pleasantly surprised that my new home town had the best/quality of coffee I had ever tasted. The atmosphere and employees were all top notch. Sine my first visit there, so much positive growth has happened there. The dinner service which usually run Thurs-Sat is truly one of the best kept secrets in Fort Wayne. Chef Jeremy has a revolving menu from week to week and we have never had a dish from Chefs kitchen that wasn't quality. The Cabbage rolls which appear on the menu from time to time are one of our favorites. Another favorite the Sweet Potato Etouffee is to die for. The cocktails: Old Crown makes the best cocktails in Fort Wayne hands down. Led by the best bartender in The Fort Chris, its a joy to see a staff of bartenders who put such pride in the preparation of their drinks. Chris has several cocktails he created himself. The Bourbon Sprawl and our other favorite Coffee and Cigarettes can only be found at Old Crown. Jackson and Tyler are also top notch behind the bar. Their enthusiasm and attention to detail is evident in every drink these gentleman poor. Old Crown is will continue to be a favorite for all in the know! read more

Even though I no longer live in Fort Wayne, every time I'm back, I stop here to pick up some coffee beans. I can still remember the first cup of coffee I ever had from here. It was the Ethiopian Yergacheffe, and that was the moment I fell in love. Since then, I have had many, many bags of coffee from here. There are definitely a few they don't have any more that I wish they did. I like a medium roast, and some of my favorites have been the Ode to Joe, the Bali "The Majestic" (oh, Bali, how I miss you so!!), any of their Ethiopian Sidamo ("Extra Tasty" was my #1 favorite), and the Indiana Monsooned Malabar. There have only been two that I thought were just "meh." Most of their coffee prices range from $12-16 a pound, which might seem rather steep at first, but they are definitely high quality and very, very fresh. The food here has been wonderful as well. The people who work here have always been friendly and helpful, even when it's been really busy. I love this place, and I can't wait to go back on my next trip back to The Fort. read more
