The only struggle was that their gazebos are first come, first serve so this mama didn't sleep the night before hoping that we'd get one for his party! I went at 6:30 AM and the large one was already taken by a small 5K group, but we did end up getting the smaller one on the south size of the park. However, I did have to sit there from 6:30 AM until his party started at 10 AM (facepalm). That said, if you're a crazy planner like me, maybe don't throw a party here because the space is unknown until the day-of! All in all, we love it and will probably be back this weekend! :)

I saw an older guy wearing Crocs without the back supports going up the path and he nearly toppled backwards several times. I was very worried for his well-being - this path really requires socks and shoes. Of note, depending on when you go and which direction you choose to go in, one side of the mountain has no relief from the sun - it is hot! The other side is shaded and pleasant. Whichever route you take, make sure to bring liquids to hydrate and know your limit. You can always get to a lower elevation and walk around the mountain if it gets too steep.

While I've enjoyed the wealth of desert mountain trails with beautiful Sonoran desert vistas here…read morein Phoenix, I'm also glad that I found a nature trail area where trees and other vegetation are in abundance. Of course, in our arid region this could only mean a riparian area (interface between land and a stream). A lush riparian plant community used to thrive along the Rio Salado (Salt River) until the building of dams and even a dump site changed much of that. But five miles of the Rio Salado just south of downtown Phoenix was set aside by the City of Phoenix for the restoration of the riparian community, and the ongoing success of the project is visible to anyone driving along Central Avenue as it crosses the Rio Salado (see the pics). You can hike, bike, or jog through the Habitat Restoration Area's trails, which are also wheelchair-accessible. It is a great place for viewing wildlife, including more than 200 bird species that have found the area to be a suitable habitat. Bring your binoculars - it'll make your visit even more enjoyable! Walking tours, nature festivals, and other programs and activities are offered by park rangers, staff, and volunteers. The area is a work in progress, and there's more to be done. But do come and enjoy this lush oasis ... or rather, riparian area. It's free, and it's a good opportunity to experience the varied wildlife of the Salt River as it once was and is now becoming again.

It almost seems like they didn't know what to do with the land so they made it into a grassy area and put a play structure there. It's close to a busy street, so would you even feel comfortable taking your kids here and possibly running by cars? I am not trying to make this out to be a terrible area and I am sure it serves its purpose. This is very much a local's kind of park and it gets its occasional use. I made the mistake of seeing extremely difficult and comparing it to a hike I did in New Mexico that was difficult thinking that this was just slightly higher than the one in New Mexico. I only looked at the distance and did not pay attention to the incline. This trail is 1.47 miles but has a gain of over 1300 feet. It is extremely steep and that is the part that will take you out! No pets are allowed on this trail, which is definitely a wise decision given how steep and narrow it is. Another hiker told us that there are a total of 36 markers along the trail, I made it to marker five, my husband made it to marker seven. By the time I hit marker five I was dizzy and nauseous. I was definitely not ready for how extremely difficult this hiking trail was. I feel like I looked at the warning signs, but didn't quite register what they were saying. It is a beautiful hike, but you definitely have to be accustomed to the incline and the altitude. The views were beautiful, but you absolutely must be careful, I would recommend a hiking stick to help keep your balance, especially on the way down. So my rating of five star is that they 100% accurately described the trail, it was absolutely beautiful, I just failed to register the warnings.

As far as the field goes, the quality was fine. It was well lit and there was enough grass to make it not feel like concrete. The big drag on this place is the overall atmosphere. The surrounding neighborhood and general populace you will encounter here gives it a vibe that I was not particularly fond of. It felt like I was in the back alley of town where all the drug deals go down, and in all likelihood, some probably did go down while we were busy playing kickball. I'd recommend coming here in the daytime as I would feel a lot safer.
