He's the first fly fishing guide we've went on a trip with and he couldn't not have been a better guy. If you are new and need a fun relaxing environment with excellent coaching, Darren is your guy. He even packs ingredients for lunch and makes a delicious sandwich on the spot while you catch fish. Photos show the first couple of fish we got. Hard to pull my phone out when we're having lots of action See you next year Darren! Jake and Miga

So if you want to avoid slathering sunscreen on, the best bet is lightweight, light colored clothes that have some kind of built in SPF. Our fishing guide, who deserves his own non-5 star review (unless you count amount of marijuana smoked while supposedly working), recommended this place as I was suffering a bit from heat. From the outside, the shop doesn't look like much, but inside - wow. This small and neat shopped is like a fly fishing paradise. As I'm not a fly fisher and also not really knowledgeable about fishing, it was overwhelming. But cool to look around and see all the crazy things people use. Anyway, they had the sun shirt that I was looking for, and I found a nice hat. So overall, cool spot to visit, and great if you're into fly fishing. Parking is easy and they take credit cards too.

We'd been desperate to get out of the…read morecity for a while, so we packed the car & our little rescue-mutt & headed away into the wilderness for our 18th anniversary. The Miner's Cabin offered a perfect, romantic, rustic retreat for us. You should think of your stay there as, "glamping". The cosy, one-room-loft-bedroom cabin is clean and basic, the structure itself, utterly charming. The bathroom is but a toilet, the entire room the shower cubicle & it's VERY clean, but most bathing happened in the river, shh, I'm not gonna lie. The cabin's heart is the pretty balcony that looks out over the crystal-clear river, where we spent a lot of our time relaxing and cooking. The kitchen is only a small bar fridge (though they do provide a large ice chest with ample space - just don't forget to buy ice), a sink, a microwave, toaster oven & an electric frying pan. Being outdoors folks though & a cook, we came prepared. I brought a portable gas burner which made the balcony a charming spot to fry up the beautiful, Steelhead Trout I was catching (FANTASTIC fishing). We ate meals out there too, to the majestic view of the river, the mountains & the pines, immediately before us. I also brought my cast iron dutch oven & used the wonderful, functional fire pit/ BBQ down on the river rock patio to roast vegetables in the fire. If you are wise about when to open and close windows at appropriate parts of the day, the Miner's Cabin stays wonderfully cool, even in the hottest of summer days as we experienced at around 103F. I think we used the swamp cooler once for an hour out of curiosity for what it may do. At night, the incredibly comfortable loft bed was heaven. We'd open up the pretty gable windows and enjoy the cool, evening breeze and sound of the lively river. The big house next door, also owned by Heidi, had a large family group staying there. We'd only see them sometimes when we'd use the driveway which is shared. Even with their nearby presence, the cabin felt very secluded. Occasionally folks would float by down the river and you'd share a wave or smile. You can hear the highway which is quite incongruous as you seem so far away from civilization. The river water is incredible. Our dog's coat and our hair and skin have never felt so good from lolling about in the water. Heidi has very detailed instructions and information available on the website and in the email package. Be sure to read them so you know exactly what you're in for and any additional costs like a dog fee etc. All the info you need is there. Heidi is very communicative. If you want the kind of no-frills, communing with nature experience we were after, this place is for YOU!

I believe we paid $30 for both kayaks. So inexpensive. We weren't camping far, and we wanted to get on the water before it got too hot. We've been dealing with 100 degree days (in late July), so it was best to be done by 10. We got on the water at 8 am, and paddled towards Lewiston. It was such a beautiful morning. The lake was just stocked with trout, so we saw lots of trout jumping! The lake has a 10 mph speed limit, so it was very quiet. We saw a couple of boats and one other pair of kayakers. It was a weekday, so there weren't too many people. After getting off the water, we bought a couple of ice cream drumsticks from their little store. They also have chips and other snacks, but the ice cream really hit the spot. We managed to sit under one of their heritage Apple trees and saw more fish jumping. Their dog was so excited that the fish was jumping. Lol They do have a restroom but it's a Porta Potty. It's not bad though. We overheard the owner say on the phone that she was closing the Marina soon as she has to go back to teaching. So glad she was still around when we were there!

Also, they give you exactly what is needed to paddle in Trinidad so you remain warm & comfy. I was so impressed with our guides, Nick and Alex, and their local knowledge of seabirds, marine mammals, and intertidal species. Whales are cool, but there are also a lot of other really cool animals & birds in Trinidad Bay. And these guides know just where to take you. They were not afraid to take us into a little rougher waters, when we asked them to, likely because they are so skilled and experienced. I also really appreciated all of the paddling guidance they provided making sure I was using my core/legs more than my arms. I was with a very large group and the guides handled everything with such class and professionalism. It is a step above any outfitter I've ever paddled with. We are really lucky to have them in Trinidad to help us access some of the most fantastic coastline along the California coast. They also do a great job interpreting the California Coastal National Monument! All of those rocks and islands are part of a statewide national monument that runs from the Oregon border south to Mexico! Wow! What a treasure. Thank you Kayak Trinidad for providing A+++ service where it is needed and appreciated!

Our group was age 10 - 64 and everyone survived :-) *** request Chris *** I guess I didn't realize how potentially dangerous it was until a couple of our teenagers fell out of the raft during a rapid.... But they were ok... Only bruises and some scrapes. They would do it all over again.... Falls and all. We went on a Class III tour which included Class I - III rapids. It's sort of "medium adventurous". If you have a lot of younger or older people in your group, you are probably good sticking with a Class I - II tour. But you will be safe during a Class III if you tell your guide that you can't swim, don't want to be thrown from the raft, etc. TIPS: DRINK A LOT OF WATER, show up early, expect to be exhausted the next day, expect to do a little hiking / climbing during lunch, Bring sunscreen, get one of those things that help your sunglasses stay around your neck because you will lose them, wear a visor or a cap under your helmet, bring cash to tip your guide because they do a hell of a job and they only make $100/day. IT'S A LOT OF FUN and the owners are really nice people.
